- zelig, on 07/09/2008, -10/+66You still can't see flash-based websites on the 3G Phone??
- skoles, on 07/09/2008, -9/+54I still can't understand why Apple left out what are basic and pretty much standard features of a smart phone. As stated in the old & new reviews there's no reasoning behind it considering it's all software related.
For what the iPhone brings to the table technology wise it should be the pinnacle of cellphones and PDA's merging. - inactive, on 07/09/2008, -5/+36 Why is battery life considered so unimportant by mobile technology manufacturers? So many devices are so small that doubling the battery size would not even make the device much bigger but provide a huge benefit in usability. It appears I'm the only who thinks so as I every time I mention this I'm pretty much instantly dugg down.
- skoles, on 07/09/2008, -4/+32Oh, sorry. I mean to say "Yay iPhone. All hail!"
- InorganicMatter, on 07/09/2008, -3/+22I believe there is an interview with Jobs explaining that. Basically:
1) Flash is not a web standard
2) Adobe is an ass
3) Flash Mobile is a pile of crap
4) Flash regular is way too bloated. - nub4life, on 07/09/2008, -4/+22This isn't Apple's fault, but it's kind of sad that the phone is always one generation behind. When gen 1 came out, first thing I asked was "Where's 3G?", now 2nd gen, it's "Where's 3.5G or 4G?". North America is really behind on mobile technology. And the telcos have too much power. But I digress.
- christhechris, on 07/09/2008, -2/+18yeah but thats canada...
- BenBenMan, on 07/09/2008, -1/+15Quite a typo o.O
- cazual, on 07/09/2008, -1/+14If you want to be a photographer, get a DSLR not a PHONE.
- welshie, on 07/09/2008, -8/+21That's partly because flash isn't a standard. It's still a proprietary vendor-specific system. I have not seen a single phone that can properly support the entire specification that will let you use the latest Flash stuff. Heck, Adobe can't even get around to releasing 64 bit releases for desktops, let alone keep up with hundreds of different ports for different phone architectures.
- serif69, on 07/09/2008, -0/+10If your biggest concern with a phone is the number of pixels it crams onto the smallest possible CMOS sensor attached to a ***** lens, then you must love the look of noise. The iPhone camera is noisy enough at 2MP; imagine what the photos would look like at twice the pixel density.
- christhechris, on 07/09/2008, -1/+10Its similarly priced to any smart phone, so how is it over priced...
- shauncorleone, on 07/09/2008, -1/+10Didn't Mossberg already slurp the iPhone when he reviewed the Instinct?
- ripple123, on 07/09/2008, -6/+14Do you just type things out to watch your fingers move or something?
- Halligan, on 07/09/2008, -0/+8I have a 1st gen iPhone - bought it after the price drop last fall. Overall, I really like it as a phone/tool, but from what I have seen, I have NO interest in upgrading to the 3G version. All the new hardware gives you is more accurate GPS (you already have google maps on it) and 3G speed, which is only available in certain areas of the AT&T network anyway.
No, I think I'll reap the benefits of the 2.0 firmware update, continue paying $20/month for all the data I want and a handful of SMS, and use WiFi if I want blazing fast downloads. - ThatDustyGuy, on 07/09/2008, -1/+9"I am going to wait for the next iPhone."
I think you'll find yourself saying that after each new generation of iPhone. - gcnaddict, on 07/09/2008, -2/+10The iPhone is trying to merge media devices together, so you fail if you think it's not a camera.
Also, the 6220 Classic unsubsidized costs $471 v. the iPhone's unsubsidized *but still locked to ATT* $499 (or is it $599? I can't remember). - MacParrot, on 07/09/2008, -1/+9True, but at least it would finely detailed noise
- inactive, on 07/09/2008, -1/+9I love Apple products... but I'm not a damn tool. Sure the iPhone looks sexy but 4 hours of talk time? Was I reading that wrong? I respect the design of Apple products but how can that be functional? What's the point of accessing work emails on an Exchange server if you can't make it through the day to even make your phone calls? I thought that was the whole point of the iPhone... a phone. Otherwise, it's just a iPod with a big screen, web browser, and bad phone service...
- amenic, on 07/09/2008, -1/+8I sense a plot to destroy the Jedi.
- dragon76, on 07/09/2008, -0/+7Could you direct us to a phone that CAN see flash-based websites?
- terrablebyte, on 07/09/2008, -1/+8The iPhone has HSDPA, which is 3.5G.
- Alex.w, on 07/09/2008, -0/+7If you think a phone has to have ***** lens just because it's a phone you should look at some of the pictures the newer Sony Ericssons take.
I used a SE K770i for a short time, old now, but it has/had an ammazing camera (for a phone). Check out the uploads on Flickr, use the drop down to look at some macro and night shots too!
http://www.flickr.com/cameras/sonyericsson/k770i/ - imnojezus, on 07/09/2008, -0/+7I think it's been well established that Rodgers is generally screwing iPhone customers in Canada. Down in the states, it's comparable in cost to most other smart phones.
- vitriolage, on 07/09/2008, -1/+7I've been looking into getting into the iPhone and as a result I have also been looking at Verizon's offerings. What is overpriced about it? They subsidized pricing isn't and plans look even cheaper than Verizon's smart phone plans. The only argument I've agreed with so far is the lack of ATT 3G coverage, but for me its a moot point because I'm located and do all my business in what it appears to be the biggest 3G blob ATT has. But I'm looking for more valid criticism if you'd care to explain.
- noahhoward, on 07/09/2008, -2/+8Flash does't work properly on phones why the hell would they include a 'feature' that isn't going to work?
- iziizi, on 07/09/2008, -5/+11I am going to wait for the next iPhone. I think it ill only be a year or so before it has the features I want (better camera!)
Aside from that, Samsung Omnia is coming out, along with HTC touch diamond and SE X1. All of these phones have same features as iPhone + 3-8MP cameras. I can use this to fill the gap until the next Iphone is released. - TimmyGUNZ, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6Apple isn't stupid, they're stubborn. They want you to use Email to send pictures rather than MMS. They know people want cut and paste, they just have refused to add it. Why they don't include these features is beyond me, but it's certainly not for lack of awareness.
- frepnog, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5lay off the crack, son.
- gcnaddict, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5reported for an attempting to exploit a security vulnerability in Java... and for spam.
- covertbadger, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5Worse, most of the energy-sapping features are utterly useless to me. I have an HTC smartphone at the moment but I don't need any of the features and the battery life sucks. I'm seriously considering going back to a refurbished Nokia 5210, which lasts a week between charges and does everything I need.
- Ductapemaster, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5Most consumers who buy the phone (Digg users generally not included) are the ones who take ***** photos to start with, so now they can just blame it on the camera! I have tons of friends who think they take awesome photos with their crappy cameras...
- noahhoward, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5Why are we whining about battery life and useless hardware? We KNEW 3G would be useless, we KNEW it would drain battery life, we KNEW that was why Apple didn't include it in the first place. But these same self-important douchebags were so eager to find fault that they bitched about it anyway. Now they get the useless features they wanted and they're still not happy? I understand that at least these guys are paid to be critical but jesus, use some ***** judgement.
- sremick, on 07/09/2008, -1/+6Here's my review:
Looks hot at first glance, and has a lot of potential... but lacking basic and fundamental features present in PDAs for 10+ years and in most phones for several years. Combined with carrier lock-in and overpriced jacked-up plans that screw you over at every turn ($70/mo and you don't even get unlimited texting?). - covertbadger, on 07/09/2008, -1/+6I wouldn't bother. When the first version was released, most of the supposed 'rush' was manufactured. I guy I worked with wandered into a Carphone Warehouse in Hammersmith at about 6:30pm on release day and had no trouble getting one. Just keep clear of the playing-up-to-the-media glitzy Apple Stores and you'll be fine.
- MacParrot, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5Wanting to buy an iPhone doesn't make you a douche. Complaining that owning one does makes you a douche
- Taiyoryu, on 07/09/2008, -1/+5yay no ads
- jun2san, on 07/09/2008, -1/+5The whole digging you up for posting "digg me down" thing hasn't worked since digg added the ability to delete comments.
FAIL - Aitese, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4Noahhoward...you know that thats still several million candles worth of light right?
- Alex.w, on 07/09/2008, -2/+6Perfectly detailed photos in the dark with no flash.. that's impressive. Oh wait, you're lieing aren't you. I see.
- Stwo, on 07/09/2008, -1/+5Sill no MMS?!
- thephosphorbox, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4*boggle* the megapixel-mythos continues. 2mp is already higher resolution than the phone's screen can display... and besides, as serif69 said, cramming more pixels in isn't going to help image quality at all, in fact, it'll hinder it.
- pyrates, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4The same rationale for not wanting a 2 button mouse. Pure arrogance and stubbornness.
- Aitese, on 07/09/2008, -2/+6If you buy something with the features you want...why do you need the iPhone? What is this strange NEED to have the iPhone even if there are alternatives?
- gllopc, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4The software may be 2.0, but the iPhone hardware isn't; it's more of an iPhone 1.5.
- amenic, on 07/09/2008, -2/+6Between the pricing / data plans and the lack of complete features, I think most people would be wise to pass and wait for rev 3 to come out and see if Jobs and AT&T have decided to remove their heads from their asses yet.
- inactive, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4HaHa no joke. Not supporting flash is a feature imo.
- waydee, on 07/09/2008, -1/+5Apple really should have looked at what Sony Ericsson and Nokia are managing with their cameras these days.
- Alex.w, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3You're not alone. My HTC TyTN II is a huge brick, but if they doubled the batter it wouldn't be THAT much bigger, and I wouldn't have to charge it every single opportunity I get.
