First Third-party Native iPhone App Now Available (Pic & video)
gizmodo.com — Google Code has now the first third-party native application ever for the iPhone. A real, full-fledged iPhone application with a graphic user interface and its own icon in the iPhone home screen. Yes, this is not a Web 2.0 app but the Real Thing ™, as you can see in the picture and in the video demonstration.

- Bretris, on 10/10/2007, -18/+1why doesn't this have more diggs?
- dirtyhipster, on 10/10/2007, -22/+13Because, the iPhone sucks.
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Because it was submitted 10 minutes ago...
- Kakcoo, on 10/10/2007, -15/+9When I'm able to play Red Alert multiplayer on the iPhone using WiFi, I'll be here. Until then, I'll stick with my oldschool T610. :-)
- zephc, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4You can totally play MAngband though: http://mangband.org/
- zephc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It's too bad people think I'm being sarcastic, because despite its lo-tech graphics (ASCII) its a really cool RPG (based on LotR)
- Billions, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1T610! That's a good phone!
- blackjack75, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You obviously never tried J2ME development on that POS (especially with v1 firmware which was the most common one at the time).
- MatthewBlack, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1I loved it, I had it for over a year, but the joystick stopped working. It also eventually happened to everyone else I knew who had this phone or the one up from it.
- kolywater, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3man, everyone is so impatient. i keep hearing people say "so what does this mean for the average user?" just shutup. these guys are reverse-engineering everything - this ***** takes a lot of time and many hours of tinkering. the fact that this is a native app is a huge step, and even more incredible is that it's hosted on google code. sure, it's just a "terminal" app now, but the developers are making incredible progress. even if you absolutely abhor the iphone, apple, or consumer culture in general, you've got to give these guys credit. what's more, this kind of ingenuity is good for the community as a whole because each day they're stripping off another layer of lock-in.
- CCB0x45, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1its not incredible that its on google code.. anyone can host stuff up there... people need to stop reading into that, we just chose it because its a nice host for open source.

- gafasiesornivek, on 10/10/2007, -31/+10This is ***** stupid. Just like the 'iPhone'. Just like it's users.
- Billions, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9From a stupid iPhone user: That apostrophe you used in the word "it's" forms an unecessary contraction of "it is," which is incorrect usage in this case. Plus you're ***** bitter-sounding.
- DoubleClickAlex, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19"Real Thing" is trademarked?

- xero69, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30The GUI appears to be a command line... I's cornfused Cleetus!
- sishgupta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminal_Emulator
I'm surprised that a whole 27 people are THAT confused. - slundal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It is a Terminal application! Of course the GUI is command line.
- sishgupta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminal_Emulator
- elvenseven, on 10/10/2007, -16/+15lol at the keyboard. In the end, you get a small screen, 60% covered by a big ass keyboard.
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13It's not about the practicality of the app, it's about people having made one with nothing other than assumptions and reverse-engineering. Though even this could have some amount of utility.
- timmerk15, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Plus, soon you can have zoom just like Safari, or just bigger font size.
- colincornaby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Eh? The keyboard doesn't take up that much space, and you still have more space for the terminal than you did on the Nokia...
- stalefries, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And it seems to have the same amount of space as a boring terminal has, so it's not really that different. The iPhone has a really high pixel density.
- Billions, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Fortunately, you can save critical screen space with acronyms like "lol"!
- CCB0x45, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If you single tap the top view it hides the keyboard on the latest version so you can see the full screen...
- timewarp424, on 10/10/2007, -8/+4Finally.
- AdonalFoyle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+30What's with the guys' tongue in the video?
- CCB0x45, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16lol its me in the video.... I really didnt expect the video to go that far, I made it in 1 try on a macbook webcam... thanks to everyone who helped from #iphone-uikit (pin, kroo, lednerk, darkton, NerveGas, natetrue, and more) I guess I do weird ***** with my tongue when trying to concentrate, the macbook reverses your view kinda lol.
- Silthrim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I figured he was trying not to drool over this new app.

- CraigJ, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2Like Coke, It's the Real Thing
- krnldmp, on 10/10/2007, -14/+9By far, the coolest app for iPhone is by Blendtec. Probably always will be.
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -23/+10Ok, the iPhone was released well over a month ago, it was a flop (relative to hype) and apple is running the same old commercials (boring as all heck) with the same old music trying to push the thing on the unsuspecting masses, now the _first_ app ever is a terminal advertised as a gui, the guy is apparently sooooo happy that he did this too. Wow, it's almost as good as Dos v1.0, except the screen isn't as big. Come on people, "Why doesn't this have more diggs?" should become "How did this get more than one digg from the original submitter!"
- stalefries, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7What? you're calling the launch a flop? I understand the rest that you said, but they shipped a lot of phones.
- timewarp424, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4For those that care about the iphone, this is a big step forward in usability. Whether it flopped, apple is running the same commercials, or whatever else bugs you about the iphone, just stop reading these submissions(it's obvious you don't like it), and let those that enjoy this news .. do that.
- ScrumFritter, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1[whine]"But timewarp, I can't let people like something I don't! It's not... it's not right!"[/whine]
- bruenig, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3It's ok rob, none of us think less of you because you don't know how to use the command line. You don't have to get so defensive.
- fauxXenophanes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yeah, if I wanted the command line I'd stick with good ol' Microsoft, once upon a time Apple was out to change all that.
- bruenig, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1To each his own, command line is a very useful and time saving interface at least for me.
- fauxXenophanes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yeah, if I wanted the command line I'd stick with good ol' Microsoft, once upon a time Apple was out to change all that.
- MatthewBlack, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Just because it doesn't have big, friendly buttons to click on and Clippy the Paperclip giving you advice, doesn't mean it isn't important from a technical perspective.
- Billions, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Oh robwilkens... You're So Wrong™.
- JimmyIkon, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11Uh oh... where is nokia boy now. he won't be happy to hear that the iphone has a terminal too.
- TheRealToma, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5Yeh......... It sure sucks playing ScummVM on my nokia. And Doom. And samba support... and WiFi.... oh, and yeh, a terminal.
- LaSepultura, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4Read the article, it states that it CANNOT do SSH.
- stalefries, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3it can't do ssh, but that as easy as dropping a few binaries (which already exist) in along with the application.
- CCB0x45, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4It can do ssh, the binaries needed are located on the googlecode page! Have fun with it!
- Bootes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Seems to be gone? Anyone that can post it somewhere else?
- Bootes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Nevermind, even if noone will ever see this. ;)
- Bootes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Seems to be gone? Anyone that can post it somewhere else?
- ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Nokia people, owners of real smart phones are using VNC, SSH clients all available from Sourceforge.net for years now. They also enjoy Lotus and Outlook capability.
Don't make ass of yourself and Mac fans. And the idiots digging down sensible comments: Fsck you, you don't deserve to be a Mac user.
- TheRealToma, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5Yeh......... It sure sucks playing ScummVM on my nokia. And Doom. And samba support... and WiFi.... oh, and yeh, a terminal.
- Zbrah, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12"JesusPhone".
Hah,nice. - colincornaby, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Thank god. Now we're going to see some real cool stuff for the iPhone. Apple needs to wake up and start supporting this stuff.
- TheCount, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Well good luck with that. Supporting open source (and free) software on the phone is the last things they want, and the last thing AT&T wants, not when they can try and charge you $3.99 for a ringtone version of a song you probably already own and $9.99 for Tetris, which you can get free just about everywhere except on locked down cell phones.
- invader, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3It's a sad, sad truth.
This is one of the primary weaknesses of capitalism. Companies thwart innovation for an easy buck. - colincornaby, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Um. Aren't web pages open source and free?
- invader, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3It's a sad, sad truth.
- ninetimes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If you ask me, the first thing someone needs to do is make a nice GUI for getting these apps onto the phone. Something stable and relatively safe, so that morons like me can use it without fearing they'll brick their fancy phone.
- Icebird, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What someone needs to do now is make an unofficial SKU and GUI template.
- ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Just wait for a "security update", you will see how much Apple supports it :)))

- spoulson, on 10/10/2007, -10/+1Jesus Christ. Will someone please create an iPhone site to put this shiat on? A $600+ cell phone isn't for everyone, just like trying to develop software by reverse engineering a closed source platform. The engineering efforts are commendable, but it just isn't news to me anymore!
- jkoke, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Jesus Christ responds: "No."
- CATSCEO, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Sweet.
- JimmyIkon, on 10/10/2007, -8/+6To the iphone haters. Say something constructive like "the iphone sucks." and add "because..."
It's like the people who say fords or chevys suck. They both make good cars, true some are better, but if you showed a cave man a chevy or a ford i'm sure he'd be impressed.
If you take away the hype, it's a nice pice of hardware with lots of potential.- Yarnage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ford and Chevy cars _do_ suck
- ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't hate iPhone necessarily, it is a good PDA with some good multimedia support.
I hate those fascists who never, ever paid for OS X in their lives and happily digging down any comment criticizing a device which they would NEVER be able to purchase (yea, I know them) for valid reasons.
As a pure Mac user didn't touch anything "PC" for years, I am ashamed of using same computer/setup as these people.
- CATSCEO, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5WTF happened to the icons of the other apps?
- PathDaemon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5He is t3h 1337 h4xx0ar, of course. Or just went crazy with theming.
- CCB0x45, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I skinned the other icons with a Louis-Vuitton theme, cause I gotta be gangsta' haha... I like customizing stuff I use.
- kethraal, on 10/10/2007, -11/+6"Thank you Apple for not delivering anything new but repackaging your old garbage!"
Yeah. ***** Apple. They just repacked their existing phone and PDA into this....
Oh...
Well ***** me if I don't look stupid. - wilhoitm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Does vi work?
- CCB0x45, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3not yet, we are working on vt100 support, its open source so anyone can contribute!
- ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Oh an actual developer. Dear Developer, no misunderstandings, we actually loved the news, we are just protesting a device not having a public SDK in 2007 and people spending their precious development time for "hacking" instead of coding freely with an open and free SDK.
Especially this sites "Apple" (!) community really made half of the people "hate" iPhone while they were happily ignoring it since it doesn't fit their needs.
Signed
"iPhone haters" :)- CCB0x45, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1With the toolchain its a pretty decent SDK now, you should look into before saying all this stuff... Apple really didnt work too hard to keep it locked down, which probably means that like the Apple TV, they don't support it but it doesn't stop it. We have dumped most of the class files for UIKit and even without an SDK, you can tell what most stuff does in it by the function names, and the rest of the frameworks are from OS X and already documented.

- PathDaemon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I have this installed on a friend's iPhone, and it's actually pretty awesome. Works exactly like it should. Smooth, stable, and well-integrated into the phone (with the sliding keyboard, bump scrolling, etc.) Props.
- Stevanoski, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I'm waiting until the first native american phone comes online.
- cyberprashant, on 10/10/2007, -16/+1Keep up-to-date with the latest i-Phone news the same way I found this story. With TechTray version 2.0 - a FREE RSS Feed reader on your windows tray. I entered "iphone" as my search and it keeps scanning all my feeds for iPhone stories and bookmarks them for review later. Not just Digg but all 16 tech sites that come preloaded with techtray (customizable) http://www.kliktray.com/techtray
- jkoke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wow. Did you really find this story with Tech Tray™ Version 2.0? Because for a second there, it looked like you were spamming dig comments advertising some lame ass Windows plug-in.

- Icebird, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Finally real progress in the iPhone hacking community. Hopefully this will stop useless efforts at unlocking the iPhone, and more at creating applications for it.
- ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes, people should spend time reverse engineering a closed device without any SDK instead of coding for Symbian or WinCE freely.
Not like Apple will allow such things, they will probably cite a "security issue" and close that backdoor.
Sony PSP all over again, I wonder when will first trojan ship.

- pinheadj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'll throw another vote on a port of ScummVM. I'd love to play some Day of the Tentacle on this thing.
- blackjack75, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Now when do we get a port from some Open Source VOIP client? AT&T's gonna be so pissed.
- ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1to do VOIP you really need to optimise code even using CPU acceleration functions using ASM code. Not like Telnet or SSH. It needs to do realtime compression, actual port registration and all of this using a sub 1 ghz RISC processor.
If you don't see a free SDK having such features that is half of the reason. Other half is preventing other companies to ship a iTunes store competitor for iPhone.- CCB0x45, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1the arm in the iPhone could easily do voice over IP... dont kid yourself please... im sure it stays hackable there will be VOIP, probably not skype since its closed, but something like Gizmo would work fine.
- ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1you need actual SDK to do any kind of VOIP or you will be plain binary hacking device for a thing which will be disabled in next update along with trojan claims.

- ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Well, people having J2ME (Java) support got IRC client for like 5-6 years now. Perhaps in 2012, Apple will allow you for IRC client sold $9.99 each over iTunes store :)
