First Smash! I broke my new iPhone, and good...
people.uleth.ca — One accidental drop to the pavement, and my new 3g iPhone is TOAST! Looking at the new design changes made by Apple for easy service, the fix is cheap - but not for AppleCare - $329 to replace the phone, no minor service available, Robbery!

- kylefox, on 07/17/2008, -2/+1You have a cracked iPhone. Haha!
- hotpepper, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1My boss cracked his laptop. Cost him $1500 to replace.
- devbox, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Yeah, who would have thought that my first attempt at a legit iPhone would be cracked... sigh...
- Qmass, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3What a SCAM.
- Chrissie, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1jerks - and i love the way my ipod got scratched within the first 2 minutes of owning it. i just know it didn't have to be designed that way. so lame. looks pretty, but don't use it or it will be ruined!
- devbox, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Hey Chrissie - I bought a cool sticker for my ipod from gelaskins.com - had it on for a year and then removed it when I gave the ipod to my wife - the shiny back was pristine! Highly recommend them.
- Chrissie, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1ya - my BF had one too. and they're great. but we shouldn't have to get these things. they should have made it scratch proof. i'm sorry to hear about your story. i hope it gets solved.
- coxon, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Those aging Crackberrys are invincible. Another reason the iPhone will never dominate the business market.
- devbox, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1True, but they'll make a nice alternative to the boring crap people put up with (like PC's). As the RIM guy said "The only thing the iPhone has going for it is a good user experience". LOL
- Huxmeister, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1What is the point of having a phone that doesn't stand up to a couple of knocks ???
Surely if all it takes is to swap out the glass, then it shouldn't cost anything like $300+ to get it replaced!!!
You would think that they would make them a little tougher or reduce the cost of swapping the unit as this will happen to lots iphone users!!! - WiseWeasel, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1My friend dropped his first-generation iPhone about a month ago, and it cracked the screen, but still worked, as the iPhone pictured in this story. I told him that he might swing by an Apple store and see if they'll fix it, as I've had good luck with Apple fixing my gear after I've done something stupid with it. I told him to tell them that the screen cracked from "normal wear and tear", and to restore his iPhone so it won't be jailbroken anymore (yeah, that was my bad).
He was near an Apple store two weeks ago, and he decided to drop in and see if they would replace it for him on a lark. He dutifully told them that the screen was cracked due to "normal wear and tear", and as the rep looked at the phone, he saw there were pages of apps, and kinda freaked out, asking if the phone was jailbroken. My buddy covered for it well, saying something to the effect of "oh, yeah, my friend did something with it to add some games" (/blush), and the rep accepted the explanation and took the phone into the back room. He reemerged with a brand new first-generation iPhone, and my friend was back in business, minus a few contacts added to the address book since the last synch with iTunes.
So long story short, Apple will occasionally be cool and replace your broken gear, even when it's obviously not "normal wear and tear" that broke it. It probably doesn't hurt to lie through your teeth and tell them that it *was*, in fact, normal wear and tear that caused the failure. Maybe the author would have had better luck taking his phone into a local Apple store, if there's one handy.- devbox, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Good tip!
I dream of an Apple store close by, we had the first one open in our province just two weeks ago. Unfortunately it's SIX HOURS away ;-) Apple phone support is really the only viable option.
- devbox, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Good tip!
- pbone, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1the real question is why do you have a picture of mao on your phone?
