- aspec, on 12/19/2007, -3/+23Ok, well if you're not going to fix the problem, can I have your macbook pro?
- deadbaby, on 12/19/2007, -2/+18I'm not sure what you're talking about. Apple released 10.5.1 only a few weeks ago and put out a bunch of security fixes today. If 10.5.2 does include specific code for new MacWorld hardware (multi-touch?) they obviously have no reason to release it sooner. There was some speculation 10.5.2 was compiled with the latest Intel compiler /w SSE4 support so we're probably talking a good 300-500MB patch here. They're obviously gonna take their time and get it right.
- Gryffydd, on 12/19/2007, -10/+25I hope wireless works on my Macbook Pro again.
- gimmeslack12, on 12/19/2007, -1/+15I would love to point your attention to System 7.5. It was bad.
Leopard is not that bad. - drobati, on 12/19/2007, -6/+20Really? My macbook and imac don't have this problem at all? Is it only defective on certain kinds of networks?
- Zippo, on 12/19/2007, -2/+15No wireless problems at all on my Macbook Pro.
- TomFrost, on 12/19/2007, -0/+13Dude, I'm seriously doubting you have any idea what a third degree burn is. Allow me to direct you to a google image search: http://images.google.com/images?q=third+degree+bur ...
If you've ever owned a laptop that caused that, the resulting lawsuit would make you a very rich man. - nedbigbyssg, on 12/19/2007, -7/+17I think there's something wrong with your Macbook Pro then. Wireless works seemlessly on my Macbook Pro CD 2.0 after the Leopard upgrade.
- zubin75, on 12/19/2007, -5/+15Bill Gates....is that you?
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -1/+11No, you're just retarded. Go play in traffic.
- beerbarron, on 12/19/2007, -2/+11I wonder if there will be new toys to play with..hmmmmm, actually iTunes could do with a little update soon
- kenplaysviola, on 12/19/2007, -0/+9I hope they fix my file sharing problem with my Windows Server and SAMBA. Currently my Apple case is escalated to the highest technician engineers at Apple and they have no idea why I can't do file sharing.
- DinosWillDie13, on 12/19/2007, -0/+9I did a clean install. That's the most aggravating thing.
- ilgaz, on 12/19/2007, -1/+10Did you guys try to reset whole network and start from strach? A G4 Laptop got new Airport signal life after installing Leopard,no kidding.
- SSUK, on 12/19/2007, -2/+10Good idea, however OSX shouldn't REQUIRE a clean install, one of it's main features according to every apple fan and apple employee is it's ability to be updated seamlessly. Also, a clean install would be difficult for a person with a HDD full of valuable data which they don't have an external drive to stick all their data on.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -1/+9Take that, Apple ad campaign.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -1/+8I look forward to the update, i am close to downgrading to tiger on my powerbook g4. Leopard doesn't seem faster to me, and battery power drains quickly at about 20% the laptop just goes off (didn't do this before with tiger), i even tried a fresh install with leopard, same issue.
- SSUK, on 12/19/2007, -1/+8You're a bit late... They fixed that problem today.
- vwgtiturbo, on 12/19/2007, -2/+9Wow, I have had ZERO problems with Leopard. Are you guys doing archive and install, or upgrades? I did a clean install, and I have had nothing funky going on. Not to rub it in, but I would rather cut off an arm than go back to Tiger.
- tubeblender, on 12/19/2007, -1/+8It would appear that you think "Vista still sucks" as well. You must use Linux.
- greentin, on 12/19/2007, -0/+6It's funny because since I'm on Leopard... my wireless internet connection work better actually!
I'm able to join a wireless network that I wasn't before (the wep password didn't work on tiger)... - sosurim, on 12/20/2007, -3/+8I have jumped on every OS to come out of Cupertino on the day they came out, starting with System 7.0. I've never had any problems using the OS even with the x.0 versions. Until Leopard.
It's not THAT big of a problem, but on my Macbook Pro (C2D 2.2Ghz Santa Rosa + 2GB of RAM) I had problems with screen not updating correctly, strange pauses when jumping from one app to another, unusually high CPU load when it should actually be low which results in much higher heat generation than I've ever experienced, etc.
In short, I see a lot more of the beach ball and there is much more heat. And even though most of the apps I use seem to work fine, I didn't want to take any chances, since I use this for production, so I moved back to 10.4.11. Tiger, by comparison, worked perfectly from 10.4.0, and every upgrade worked without a hitch.
Although by Microsoft's standards, Leopard would be a success, it is far below Apple's standards, IMHO.
Leopard's Pros: Wireless works better actually, and the airport menu shows you whether the wireless AP is locked or not (very convenient); Spotlight works almost as promised (Tiger's version is useless, IMO); more unified, consistent UI; better file sharing (esp. with Windows-centric networks); iLife stuff seems to work faster and better than previous ones (Mail seems to work better with Courier IMAP, for example);
Leopard's Cons: Many apps seem to run slower; the OS in general seems to run slower in many parts (opening folders with many files, for instance); Cover flow is absolutely useless; stacks are useless; transparent window chrome tends to make things confusing; the indicator that shows what programs are currently running on the dock is difficult to see; bootcamp is broken;
I should elaborate on the last part. The bootcamp 2.0 that comes with leopard is badly thought out. It pre-formats a partition in FAT32. If you try to reformat in NTFS, it will fail to install. If you proceed to use the FAT32 partition it has allocated, it will fail. You have to jump through hoops to work around this. What I ended up doing was getting a copy of Bootcamp 1.4, turning the clock back by a few years and using that to install XP on my MBP.
I think people should wait until version 10.5.4 or 5 before you can use this productively. My 2 cents. - superkendall, on 12/19/2007, -1/+6Given that it has forever, don't see why not. What aspect of WEP is not working for you?
- magicaltrevor, on 12/19/2007, -1/+6Since my upgrade to 10.5.1, whenever I'm on battery power, my wireless connects and disconnects quite a bit, about once every 30 seconds. That may be what he's talking about.
- antitab, on 12/20/2007, -0/+5"Trying to control everything"
That explains their extensive use of and commitment to open standards throughout their operating system and products (MPEG, PDF, POSIX, OpenGL, OpenStep) and the fact that the entire core of OS X is open source (Darwin).
Let's compare using the above examples only:
Apple: MPEG, PDF, POSIX, OpenGL, OpenStep, Darwin
Microsoft: WMV, XPS, WinAPI, DirectX, .NET, NT
Yeah man, the similarities are uncanny. - MacParrot, on 12/20/2007, -0/+4Not as much as a typical schoate09 comment
- superkendall, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4Boot from Leopard DVD, and run Disk Util from the installer menu... that will be able to fix the volume, and reset permissions.
If it can't - time for Disk Warrior. - TastyLamp, on 12/20/2007, -0/+4Same here. Leopard's been a great upgrade for me.
- DinosWillDie13, on 12/19/2007, -3/+7I still can't repair disk permissions. My computer has been running funky as hell lately.
- nicc, on 12/20/2007, -0/+4same here.
my Powerbook actually gets better reception w/ Leopard compared to previous... - eatsushi, on 12/19/2007, -4/+7Not to sound like a help forum, but has anybody else been experiencing problems with firefox and leopard?
- jonahan52, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3You do know that a slash "/" in the unix world means a folder right? For example /Volumes/Macintosh'' HD/Applications/ Would be the applications folder on Macintosh HD.
Digg took out my forward slash after Macintosh :( - bcorder, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3I've had a few issues w/ 10.5. Most were fixed by wiping and installing versus an updgrade. That being said one of my machines loved the upgrade and runs fine. Running CS3, CS2, Final Cute Suite, and more w/o problems.
- superkendall, on 12/19/2007, -3/+6I've not seen wireless problems on a Macbook Pro, or a mac mini...
- durru7, on 12/19/2007, -3/+6I recommend smcFanControl if you have a MB or MBP, it lets you control the speed of the fans.
- bbqsalad, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2"Is that cheese I smell?" - Steve Ballmer.
- bbqsalad, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2Wrote a song about it. Like to hear it? Here it goes.
- SoundScape, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2I did an upgrade and have had zero problems. I guess we're just lucky.
- bbqsalad, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2I think every OS has bug's.. Just some more than others. Once someone makes an OS without any I may actually pay for it.
- pruppert, on 12/19/2007, -5/+7Ditto for my Macbook.
- RajAtWork, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2My only issue with Leopard was the keyboard freezing which was allegedly fixed yesterday. Rock on.
- Jlaugh, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2I had a fan problem with my macbook it was doing 4700 rpm and then failed completely. The Apple store replaced it and the heatsink and I've had no problems since. I was lucky they fixed it the day I brought it in, I thought I'd have to send it off for days.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2"i went back to 10.4 because i was having problems with 10.5"
Look up the page. Buried. - bassman730, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2I have the same problem. I've had to enter in the IP address of every machine i want to get files from. It's kind of annoying considering it should put those machines in the finder sidebar.
- Jlaugh, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2The only problem I with Leopard was broken alias files in the dock the first week after the upgrade. Other than that it's been rock solid. While my experience with Vista is that I had to turn off all the aero stuff to get a decent frame rate on my video games. I think I'll go back to XP.
- vagarach, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2And also get iStat menus and keep a load monitor on the top bar, so you can see what your cpu is doing, and adjust the fans as required. If you don't *let* your MBP get hot, it won't ever get hot enough to be uncomfortable. Right now mine is idling at a nice 37 degrees, and there is no need to have to let your cpu get so hot the OS has to step in and turn on the fans.
- captainchris, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2I did a clean install and i had minor problems (graphical glitches). The .1 upgrade a few weeks later solved them and the system is very stable and runs fairly well.
- drouk1556, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2Waterboarding is torture too, robogobo.
- joshpar, on 12/20/2007, -1/+3Kernel panics are usually the result of bad RAM, not the system software. If the RAM is from Apple, report it and get it exchanged. If it is a third party, see what their policy on RAM purchases is.
- bbqsalad, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2Ok, So Apple is going to begin testing and working on an UPDATE!?
Definitely front page worthy. -
