- johnnyspade, on 01/22/2008, -4/+109I like it, but when did my life become so lame that I would spend time looking at photos of someone unpacking something?
- amasiancrasian, on 01/22/2008, -11/+60I've learned to weigh the success of an Apple product by how many people bitch about it. By this measure - this product will be a resounding succes
- Zippo, on 01/22/2008, -12/+40Bitch and moan all you want, it's still a nice laptop.
- nharpe, on 01/22/2008, -10/+31I can't believe you people get your rocks off by looking at pictures of somebody unboxing something. Is this as exciting as when you unboxed your first inflatable girlfriend?
- EustaceTilley, on 01/22/2008, -17/+37That last shot is so slick, i would give up all of my USB ports for it!
- calon9, on 01/22/2008, -1/+19I am getting ready to unbox my lunch, but unfortunately left my cam at home otherwise you guys coulda seen the exciting (and often challenging) steps I take in trying to get the clingy wrap off my sandwich, and how my doritos compare to that guy's lays.
- epilonious, on 01/22/2008, -1/+16Don't think of it as your life being lame... think of it as the internet becoming so pervasive and ubiquitous that you don't have to try hard at all to find pictures of someone unpacking something.
- inactive, on 01/22/2008, -8/+22Um why not compare it to the Sony X505 that was .11 inches thicker... but then that was 4 years ago !! And I think it had a ethernet cable in the back and usb ports.
- MacParrot, on 01/22/2008, -1/+13You are a sad strange little man and you have my sympathy
- wageslaven, on 01/22/2008, -3/+12Or the Toshiba R500 which is lighter, has a removable battery, an optial drive and it weighs less (1kg compared to the mac's 1.35kg)
- f4nt0m4s, on 01/22/2008, -4/+13BUT IT FITS IN AN ENVELOPE!!!!!
- Alphapsi12, on 01/22/2008, -6/+15Can't wait until my pre-ordered MBA comes. I can't wait to see what the Mac haters/evny start their biased bashing simply because it has an Apple logo. To be honest I can't remember the last time I had to insert a disk into my MBP while I was away on business, I now can rent all my DVDs/ obtain them through Handbreak, boot Ubuntu, XP SP2, and Leopard with this fine looking laptop. Being on your feet 10-12 hours a day going from conference to conference, a couple of pounds makes a huge difference. Nobody is asking you buy the MBA, it's not for the everyday consumer/student and those who need a very portable sleek laptop will pay for the premium (the compararable Sony and Toshiba are more expensive). I can't speak for all the Mac users out there but having a Mac doesn't mean that you are supreme to an non-Mac user and I can't stand those over zealous types who bash each others products in utter ignorance. It is a computer people and I bet most of you don't use either PC or Mac other than surfing websites, e-mailing, playing games, purchasing items, downloading music/movies, Etc. and both PC and Mac performs those task equally efficient so quit the mindless insults when you don't really have anything but garbage insults.
- tupperbacharach, on 01/22/2008, -11/+19***This computer is frikkin paper thin.***
It is not as thin as the Intel Mobile Metro, which is actually "the world's thinnest laptop" at 0.70".
Also, as far back as four years ago, Sony sold the Vaio X505, which some say was only 0.02" thicker than the Macbook Air, while others say the X505 was 0.03" thinner. We will probably need calipers to find out.
However, one thing for sure: Apple certainly lags behind in the Ultra-Slim laptop category. - inactive, on 01/22/2008, -2/+10Post was updated with a video and some very interesting comments. Apparently, the blogger who took the photos of the unboxing is a PC user: "Akiko has shared with us her opinions about the Air, from a perspective of a PC user obsessed with thin laptops, 'like everyone in Japan'."
- jonshipman, on 01/22/2008, -2/+9You don't buy a new laptop every 2-4 years? o.O
- haydesigner, on 01/22/2008, -1/+7Then... I am going to suggest... that this laptop is not the option for you. Just choose another.
- crackedplastic, on 01/22/2008, -4/+10Since when was the MBP ever controversial?
- banmaster, on 01/22/2008, -8/+14Apple lags behind in most things except marketing to stupid dolts who will just accept ANYTHING apple says as thetruth without looking at what others have done first!
- sjorsvb, on 01/22/2008, -1/+6Stop with the friggin' envelopes already!
- MasterPain, on 01/22/2008, -4/+9Would you give up a optical drive also I guess you have to. Who needs to install new programs anyways.
- pxa270, on 01/22/2008, -9/+14I guess I'll get one when I want my laptop to double as an aluminum dinner tray.
- JimSwarthow, on 01/22/2008, -1/+6I'd think I'd feel like a (friendly) giant in Lilliputia behind the wheel of one of these. seriously, this thing just might be too small.
- pgillan, on 01/22/2008, -2/+7Which is why this laptop is not for you. I'm just as sick of the people who seem personally offended that Apple put out a product that they don't want to buy as as I am of the people going on about how great this laptop is.
- directive0, on 01/22/2008, -5/+9Waaaaaah, waaaaaah. I don't like apple products. Waaaaaah, I could just buy something else and forget about it, but the premise of someone buying something I won't even if its not a good product makes me scared and confused! I bet they've never even realized that it's overpriced and lacks many features the cheaper alternative offer, even though it's been said about 50 billion times by 50 trillion different people! People need to know how I feel about Apple Macintosh Computers, its for their own good!
- EmperorChow, on 01/22/2008, -3/+7it would seem non of my usb flash drives are going to be able to fit into Air's usb port. Plus does the air just become lopsided when the port is open? or just elevated. Will check out at Apple Store when it comes out.
- manitoba98xp, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4It's either that or the power brick. Pick your poison.
- skidooer, on 01/22/2008, -1/+5Doesn't an external mouse defeat the purpose of an ultra-portable laptop? If you are always finding yourself in situations where you are able to use an external mouse, you probably aren't the kind of person who needs an Air in the first place.
- inactive, on 01/22/2008, -3/+7Wow that means that Apple TV should have taken over the world by now !
- sentinel105, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4dugg for use of "zealots"
- orangetiki, on 01/22/2008, -3/+6Obviously you have never met anyone in the design field.
- tupperbacharach, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3If you are referring to the Intel Mobile Metro, it counts in that it is actually "the thinnest laptop in the world" -- not the Macbook Air.
In addition, how do you know that you will never be able to buy one?
Furthermore, the four-year-old Sony X505 could be thinner than the Macbook Air, and it was a production model. If the old X505 isn't thinner, then it is only 0.02" thicker than the Macbook Air, and it has more features.
Also, there are other ultra-slims that have been claimed to be thinner, but someone would have to dig up the specs. - deenoop, on 01/22/2008, -5/+8it looks nice but its almost useless imo. I'll stick to my macbook. has everything i need. don't need to buy a usb to ethernet dongle for it.
- MacParrot, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3Actually it's pretty solid and sturdier than the pictures show. But at the end of the day it's still just a MacBook at a MacBook Pro price
- Alphapsi12, on 01/22/2008, -1/+4Being on my feet 10-12 hours a day doesn't imply that I'm using the computer 10-12 hours. Most conferences I'm normally given a packet of paper along with other sample products, when I'm on my computer usually it's for e-mails, spreadsheet data entry, programming, taking notes when jotting notes is not the most effective, and iChat with my family. I don't remember the last time I had to change my battery on a business trips granted I do own a spare on my MBP but haven't had to use it yet. Thanks for the concern in regards to the EMF created by coiled wires, Mr. Faraday would be proud.
- wageslaven, on 01/22/2008, -1/+4"I'm glad I'm not some poor slob with a crappy job who can only criticize what I can't afford."
No, you're a self righteous ***** who thinks everyone else around him is as shallow as he is. Here's a clue for you; some of us actually have brains enough to not be manipulated by Apple's faux-elite marketing.
Congratulations, you're easily manipulated. A fool and his money and all that... - AddictedToMosh, on 01/22/2008, -13/+16thats the ***** unboxing ive ever seen
- javaroast, on 01/22/2008, -1/+4As far as the MBA goes, it seems like to little for too much and regardless of the press it is not going to be a big hit for Apple. I'm not sure that it really needs to be. I think it has done a good job of extending the Apple mystique.
The big news to me is the multi-touch trackpad. I think Apple will have a huge hit with that, and I can envision plenty of ways that the trackpad could be useful. - nolesfan247, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3Check out this shot, even the babies are getting in on the new MacBook Air craze!
http://gizmodo.com/photogallery/macbookairunboxing ... - inactive, on 01/22/2008, -0/+2No, no: Pirated copies of Adobe Creative Suite and Frontrow are awesome games.
- wageslaven, on 01/22/2008, -1/+3And the under featured, over priced Cube which many people are comparing it too. Too little for too much. not compelling at all.
- inactive, on 01/22/2008, -0/+2Call up the Will it Blend guys, I think you have a winning spin off there.
- The_Dude, on 01/22/2008, -0/+2well bring that cam tommorrow god damn it!
- russelbutt, on 01/22/2008, -1/+3compared to its' vaio competitor? not really. that vaio is a 13" model, hardly the ultra-portable comparison. try putting it up against the 11" TZ series. it's still slightly thicker, but it's got all the good stuff (like an optical drive and extra ports) and the TZ series has a smaller footprint, smaller than an 8x10 piece of paper.
- crackedplastic, on 01/22/2008, -1/+3Yes, but you implied that it was with "i.e." (sic), which I think you meant to say "e.g."
Yes, you make a good point with your second comment. People can feel justified about a higher priced product if the market already exists (e.g., Chevy vs. Cadillac, K-Mart vs. Nordstrom, or Tasters Choice vs. that gourmet *****). With the MBA, there is no current flat-but-crippled laptop niche, so it's much more scrutinized. Time will tell.
Personally, I think it's bad for the consumer if it sells well. We need more value. - bowe, on 01/22/2008, -0/+2right because that's so much simpler. [rolls eyes]
- MacParrot, on 01/22/2008, -1/+3The battery thing while annoying is not a deal breaker for most people (like Alphapsi12) who are spending a good deal of their time either in Airports (you can almost always find a power outlet) or on planes (most international carriers have power adapters at all seats and the airplanes adapter is I think $50 for the MBA). For me, the deal breaker is that you are spending a lot of money on what is essentially a MacBook with all the limitations (smaller screen, no seperate video card) of that model, plus no FW, ethernet port, or more than one USB port. If you can with those limitations and size/weight is VERY important to you, then a MBA would be a good fit. I still wouldn't buy one myself though.
- rnlmedia, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2Would still prefer a small footprint to a thin profile
- angelces, on 01/22/2008, -3/+5I don't use the button under my MacBook's track pad at all. I double click and i 2 finger click (aka right click) as far as i'm concerned Steve could kill that button too.
- TheBigSquid, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2Why do so many people love to hate the MacBook Air? If you don't want to buy it fine but why such anger towards it? I won't buy a Ford but it doesn't mean I get really vocal and angry and call Ford owners morons. Wipe the froth off your mouths and move on.
- bowe, on 01/22/2008, -0/+2You mean you don't tear down and frame all of your apple boxes to hang in your study? What a weirdo...
