- Harbinger1080, on 08/05/2008, -1/+82Sure it will... for like, what? A few extra weeks?
It's the same old song and dance-- apple updates and breaks previous hacks, then the iphone dev team hacks it again, and apple updates... - Sloi, on 08/05/2008, -3/+60Unhackable? FAMOUS LAST WORDS.
- hsinray, on 08/05/2008, -0/+43The same thing was said for PSP firmwares.
- vitriolage, on 08/06/2008, -1/+36So did the rest of us...
- inactive, on 08/06/2008, -0/+31Not me, but I watched it on youtube.
- srodolff, on 08/05/2008, -3/+33Wasn't every iPhone ever released un-unlockable?
I rest my case. - inactive, on 08/05/2008, -0/+26So when is the Un-un-unlockable hack gona be released?
- jorichter, on 08/05/2008, -4/+19Un-unlockable?... Until someone cracks it?
- WaveRunningNakd, on 08/06/2008, -2/+15So the new firmware renders the phone... lockable?
Alert the media! - peticsu, on 08/05/2008, -1/+13sounds like a challenge
- SkippyDoorknob, on 08/06/2008, -2/+13A few weeks? I was thinking a few hours.
- xero9, on 08/06/2008, -1/+10The difference here being that the 360 is in communication with Live every time you turn the thing on, allowing it to do all sorts of checks. The iPhone never actually hits up apple.com and reports a checksum of all it's systems. And lets be honest here.. The updates for the 360 don't stop your games from working. It just bans you from using the Live service.
You're comparing apples to oranges - CVL4317, on 08/05/2008, -1/+101 month before un-Un-unlockable firmware, which is 1 month before Un-un-Un-unlockable firmware
- JAWS, on 08/06/2008, -2/+10People said that of the 360 too... While the 360 is slightly cracked, it's by no means fully cracked 2 (3?) years after release. Face it, there are some things that may be very hard, if not impossible to crack. Has Apple done it with this one? I don't know, but it's difficult, if not bad judgment, to state things with certainty.
- speakafreaka, on 08/06/2008, -0/+7This is BS.. in australia, they have to unlock the phones if requested because its anti competitive.
At the moment you can pay $80 to have your iPhone unlocked from Optus, so there must me some other hole that remains uncovered. - Apocalyptic0n3, on 08/05/2008, -2/+9Is anyone all that surprised that an update to the firmware will block something AT&T doesn't want? Didn't it happen repeatedly with the iPhone 1.0 software?
- CannedCorn, on 08/06/2008, -6/+13They said the same thing about my girlfriend. Took her down preeeeeety quick.
- aimhelix, on 08/06/2008, -0/+6That's a very arrogant assumption...
- bigsteve, on 08/06/2008, -0/+4Yea, the same way 1.1.1 "could have" because 1.1.1 included a new firmware too. But the dev team found holes in that, and the next after it too. So...
- hagfish70, on 08/06/2008, -0/+4So can my BetaMax VCR. So what, big shot?
- mrsteveman1, on 08/06/2008, -0/+4archlich, the iphone qualifies as a similar platform to trusted computing in a lot of ways as well, though not as bad. Software by default won't run unless its signed, users don't have real control over the software running on the system, you can't easily run whatever you want on it, etc.
It's not difficult to hack, but its still there and similar. - hagfish70, on 08/06/2008, -0/+3Tittle should be: Firmware 2.01 could render 3G iPhone un-unlockable...For a few extra days.
- afrothunderman, on 08/06/2008, -1/+4Maybe they will make a special battery for the iPhone, lol
For those who don't know, that's a reference to the PSP's pandora battery that unlocks service mode and can't be stopped by firmware updates. - omarqaz7, on 08/06/2008, -0/+3it's impossible for it to be un-unlockable, because carriers like Vodafone already have software that can unlock the phone officially. It's just a matter of figuring out how to do it.
- archlich, on 08/06/2008, -1/+4xbox360 was also developed by ibm as a trusted computing platform.
- supermanred, on 08/06/2008, -2/+4The pwnage tool's logo is a Pwnapple (pronounced pown-apple).... noob.
- tnoy, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2Breaking the carrier lock is not quite the same thing as jailbreaking the phone.
- flarn2006, on 08/06/2008, -1/+3iPhone: the new PSP
- galore, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2Given how lousy the 3G reception is, I give Apple the benefit of the doubt that the purpose of updated modem SW is to foil unlocking attempts. That phone desperately needs a better 3G implementation. Maybe that's what this update addresses.
- hagfish70, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2Oh, that extra T is for you to shove up your nitpicking ass. Enjoy.
- colonelpanic, on 08/06/2008, -2/+4Me fail english-thats unpossible!
-Ralph Wiggum - ThankTheCheese, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2From the iPhone dev team:
"We don’t see any major problems with the release that Apple made, but we have not released an update for PwnageTool for it as yet and therefore PwnageTool 2.0.1 will currently not work!"
it doesnt sound like they are throwing in the towel claiming it is un-unlockable. I'm not sure where Engadget got their headline from. - Wootstapler, on 08/06/2008, -1/+3It will happen. Just give the dev team a bit more time.
- JakeyG14, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2It does change something, they've already shot the lock smith clown opening the first vault so they're pretty much *****. Not to mention there's an electric charge passing through the vault too.
- Elranzer, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Overpriced and no good games?
- speakafreaka, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1I thought that's what its talking about?
- millimite, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Dear iPhone lovers,
There's no need to live in despair any more. I think these guys have answered all of our questions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUWtQHykeTI. They have been able to unlock their iPhone 3g with the mooglex sim adapter and better yet, it supports Apples new firmware update, 2.0.1. So for all you none believers out there, here's the proof.
Have a wonderful day =) - arrow85, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Ok people lets remember back to the first iphone before we start to go crazy. Apple did the very same thing to the first iphone. They performed a baseband update. People said unhackable. 4 months latter we had any sim and it was as simple as a download direct to the phone. So lets not go crazy. The baseband update updates the cellular portion of the phone and i would venture from actualy using it that the phone realy does need a re-write to the baseband code. My has wacky bars and coverage changes that are all over the place. This is controled in the baseband area of the phone. The os sits on top of that. So for apple to release and update to fix that a basband re-write was in order. What do you expect for them to make it easier to hack there "Enterprise" ready device. The chalange is just going to get harder, however with over a million of these jewels in circulation and over 400k made each and every week there is even more incentive to hack them. What do you expect they are going to have to re-write things a few more times with the new push api. It will get like stages ok we have cracked up to this far and no further. The fact they can even removed the baseband code change is proof of how far we have come from the orginal iphone. I want to think that a sim unlock for the new baseband code should be tested and ready with a good solid jailbreak of 2.1.1 the revision of the revision by jan. So this un-unlockable buisness is kinda once again wonky
I would however like to hear how to make ATT unlock my phone here in the US i have never heard of any one actualy getting them to do it even if you pay them the termination fee and claim your leaving the country for good.
A script for how to get this done would be amazing - inactive, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1She folded like a ten cent TV dinner tray.
- kenok, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1As if you 'could' take the battery out from the phone.
- supermanred, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1When you said that it reminded me of the Daleks chanting "We cannot fail!!! We cannot fail"... usually just before The Doctor blows them the ***** up.
- stone2020, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1http://www.pwnagetool2.com
- HolyChimp, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1He wishes...
- cufford, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Rather than illegally, or at least immorally "hacking" a product to get around excessively greedy corporation's restrictions on use of "their" product. Why not just stop buying their ***** overpriced product in the first place. This is really ass-backwards.
People complain to no end about such restrictions on this and other products, but rather than stop buying them and forcing the companies to change their ways, they support the very rip-offs they condemn, and then try to steal what they're not legally allowed to do.
This world is really getting ***** up. - hiddencatch, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1you should be able to re-download the album for free.
- mikesown, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Eventually this is all going to end in a hack that requires you to reprogram the onboard baseband firmware by taking out the chip, reprogramming it, and soldering it back(not that it's an easy task). All this hacking is based on holes Apple (accidentally) left open in the firmware. Apple is patching up all these holes as they are found, and I highly doubt there are that many more to go. The existing iPhones that have already been sold may not have this issue(as they can most likely be downgraded), but future iPhones will certainly be more resistant to hacking. And, quite honestly, who CARES about unlocking their iPhone? Aside from international users who don't have access to the iPhone legitimately yet(this will soon be resolved as Apple is signing deals at a brisk pace) and people who want to roam without paying out the nose(just get a cheap GSM phone for travel), there's not much of a "market" for this sort of thing.
- supermanred, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1You have to unlock most celphones that you buy at a discount.
- arrow85, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Now that is what i am talking about a sim adapter to trick the iphone into thinking it is on the right network.
there is no way around that sort of a hack it is kinda drastic - supermanred, on 08/13/2008, -0/+13G reception is fine. Must be the cel coverage in your area. Complain to your local celphone company.
Oh, and please learn how to write before visiting us on the internet again. If I knew you personally, I would've done you the favor I've done for some friends and pulled off your capslock button. - inactive, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2Just more proof that Apple and AT&T are scum companies pushing a scum product...
