- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -5/+43carguy, OS X can already run on a PC, it's been able to for a long time (it's called OSx86).. the reason we want xp to run on a mac is for obvious reasons: apps and games that cant run on the mac. although mac os is a better operating system, even a mac user would love to be able to run xp on their wonderful apple computer instead of needing a separate windows PC in order to do so.

"OK Basic progress sofar. Windows is installed fine on my iMac 17" now. Only general windows glitch that I have sofar is that when I try to reboot the PC it freezes on "Windows is Shutting Down..." and I have to manually cycle the power to restart the machine (shutdown works fine though).
Driver Wise I installed the Intel 945 chipset drivers without a hitch and Wireless and WIFI networking now work.
From what I've read the 20" iMac needs some work still, the mac mini is also now working, and the macbook pro is also working. Appears the iMac and Macbook Pro are almost identicle in hardware config. The WIFI doesn't appear to be the same in the mac mini though so the drivers I posted don't work for that."
Thats from one of the testers.
I hope that helps you out, stokestack. - Kyderdog, on 10/12/2007, -7/+41I try to reboot the PC it freezes on "Windows is Shutting Down..."
So windows IS really working on the Intel Macs :)
Because thats what happens to my XP box at work... - MrSpontaneous, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35Congrats and thanks, Narf and Blanka!
- AkiraXXX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29As a tech support guy, I think it is great. More choice is almost always better for the user.
For me, it is helpful because:
1) It gives more people a reason to check out an Apple product
2) It may actually switch more people over to Apple since they can now try a Mac without worrying about losing Windows XP if they absolutely need it.
3) For someone like me, I need Windows XP as my primary OS for work. This gives me the best of both worlds (maybe more soon if you can tri-boot Linux).
4) This will piss off Bill Gates. Look for the soon-to-be-released "Windows Security Patch" code-named "Applesauce".
5) This will piss of Steve Jobs. "They're soiling my pure treasure with their filthy, filthy OS!"
6) Final Cut for my movies, Half-Life for my games.
7) Now I won't have to feel awkward at cocktail parties when someone asks "Which operating system do you use?" If they are in a suit: Windows; If they are in all black with a beret: MacOS; If they are in overalls or flannel: Linux
8) Proof of concept is cool, period.

- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22the point of this post is to confirm that windows xp was booted off of an intel mac so the doubting little douche bags who insisted that the video and pictures were a hoax can finally shut the ***** up.
- Stegg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I bought my Intel iMac with the idea that someone would find a way to get XP to boot on it and it looks like my gamble paid off. Ever since I made the switch to Apple I've had to use my windows box for various things, namely games and some other apps. I can finally get rid of that hunk of garbage and sail along smoothly with my beautiful 20" iMac. I work at a CompUSA where all I basically do all day long is convince people to switch to Apple, and all I can say is that this will finally trump the few legitimate arguments I typically run across for buying Windows over Mac OS X machines. What a glorious day.
(However, I think that if running Windows XP on a Mac is what's convincing you to buy one you're missing the point entirely. OS X is what makes Macs so great. In a way, running XP any more than one needs to is sullying the Mac IMHO.) - judgeFire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Heh, multiple mouse buttons has been in developer APIs since OS 6 and became more supported during OS 8.5, when contextual menus were introduced.
And do note, they're contextual menus - not a hiding place for 'yet more commands we couldn't fit elsewhere in the UI' - style of crap design.
J - Takumi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12All conducted in brilliant spirit, and lets not forget Clay also who came ever so close, and did so under amazing circumstances, not actually having an intel mac of his own! http://daemons.net/~clay/index.php/2006/03/15/dual-booting-windows-xp-and-mac-os-x-on-intel-macs/
And FFS carguy84 how many times does it need to be explained - canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8For all those saying, "why run Windows XP on a Mac" let me answer...
I just bought my first Mac in 13 years (20 inch intel iMac) just because I was hoping for a dual boot soultion like this. I have been drooling over Apple hardware for the last 6 years and watching Steve Job's keynotes like a religion but didn't move because I have a few specific apps I use daily that only run on Windows. In my case they are Microsoft Flight Simulator and two company specific applications for my work. For EVERYTHING else I do, email, web browsing, photo editing and management, video editing, DVD creation, word processing etc. I wanted to use a Mac. I didn't want the trouble of owning two desktops and two laptops. NOW WITH THIS SOULTION I can own ONE desktop and ONE laptop, both the pinacles of hardware pieces (let's face it, no one but Apple makes drool worthy hardware like this) and with a simple dual boot I have my cake and eat it too.
This will double Apple's market share to 10% and will cause them to sell many, many, many more computers when this process is refined and likely boxed to make it as simple as buy this for $29.99 and purchase a copy of Windows XP/Vista and you have a dual boot machine.
Great freaking news this morning... Go Apple! - rickvug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Here is the latest in the osx86 forum, there are lots of little details in this thread: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=11731&st=240
I like the current last post:

~ I don't think they'll have a problem with that once this thread hits the front :) - seanalltogether, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm now curious to see what kind of job offers narf gets as a result of this, that $13k might end up as pocketchange ultimately.
- rickvug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7From what I have been reading on the form, the code might come out as a sourceforge project as early as tomorrow. It looks as if more than one team was on the same track, so they will be sharing code to make a solution that incorporates the best of both.
Right now they are in the process of debugging a few things to get the mini to work correctly, but they seem to have fixed that already. There also seems to be an issue about getting the computer to reboot, although I'm guessing small things like this will be an easy fix.
This is very exciting news indeed! I wonder how long it will be until this is commonplace in Mac-land? All of the sudden I think it will be a lot easier to justify the extra cost... especially to my boss who MUST have simply accounting.
Virtualization and running both OS's side by side is where this should get REALLY interesting. The pundits will have a field day with this in the morning! - Subcide, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12the mac can right click just fine.
- drakino, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13I prefer to run my OS of choice on a properly supported platform. So since I moved mostly to OS X, I want Apple hardware. I still game enough to want Windows XP as well, so I'll accept this direction of hack to get XP on my MacBook.
OS X on a PC is possible, but very hackish, more so then getting XP on the new Macs. Since Apple is actively trying to prevent this, each new update tends to break things and need another workaround. Since I like the features Apple adds in the updates, I'd prefer a stable box. Microsoft isn't trying to prevent XP from running on a Mac, so most updates shouldn't break this. - aznbond, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Who else is genuinely excited about the success of this project and is seriously considering going for a Macbook??
Now there's actually no excuse for people to get a Macbook (except for the whole price thing). There are all those notebooks by acer/asus with metal construction, but in terms of build quality and aesthetics, you can't really beat the macbook.
And it's spectacular to know that they have all the wifi drivers working properly. Especially compared to how inconvenient it is for a lotta notebook users to get their wireless drivers working in ubuntu! - RhinoSS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9FRAGaLOT..
How could it not be considered Apple hardware even though the Mobo and Hard drive are manufactured by a third party? Apple set forth requirements then outsourced to other companies. Using similar reasoning, a Dell shouldn't be considered to be running on "Dell hardware" because it doesn't manufacture the Mobo and Hard drives. - Shaft0rz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I think maybe it's less hackish, because as far as I can tell, this is all done in BIOS - the OS doesn't need any patches. For OSX on intel, every OSX release could potentially break the old OSX86 code, whereas with this solution, new Windows releases should run seamlessly. I think, anyway...
- davdav, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Ahhh, a good day indeed. Nice too see some more possibilities.
While I am an OS X junkie myself, I can see times when XP would be necessary - ShaunO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sounds like they're already working on getting Xen virtualization working on the mac:intels. For a relatively low overhead, you should (eventually) beable to run both concurrently, and switch resources between them. But the guy/people working with booting OSX thru Xen mention it's more difficult than most OS because OSX already had virtualization hooksin the OS? Apple could be working on something similar themselves.
Random speculation (founded on real interviews with pertinant people) .. http://www.pintmaster.com/wordpress/index.php/20060131/mac-os-x-and-xen-optimizer-is-this-relationship-the-future-of-windows-on-the-mac/ - luxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Next step is getting drivers running on those Graphics cards...
- gonzales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5let's see if anyone can come up with Fast OS Switching on the fly....
- mikentosh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Are you joking? Not a Mac user, eh?
- capran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why would Bill Gates get pissed off? As long as you bought the copy of XP to run on your x86 Mac and are only using the product key for 1 installation, then you're completely within the Microsoft EULA.
And, while Steve Jobs can be an anal-retentive prick, it was publicly stated that Apple would do nothing to actively stop people from using Windows on a Mac. My guess with the EFI missing the BIOS emulation thing is that the did that for aesthetics, why include ancient crufty code on a 100% modern computer, especially when you don't intend to sell the computer with anything but OS X?
So this is a win-win for everybody. Apple gets to sell more Macs to the people who were on the fence, and Microsoft gets to sell more copies of XP (assuming people don't pirate...)
Now, I'm coming from the opposite direction, though. I have a G4 Mac Mini, but I'd really rather be using OS X on my nice and fast gaming box, which is many times more powerful than the Mini. But Apple has no inclination to sell a legit copy of OS X for this box, so it'll always be a hack (and my 3 biggest problems right now with OS X86 are no Nvidia drivers, no support for my DVD-DL burner, and no support for the built-in NIC) - vermin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Awesome, this makes me want to buy a MAC.
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"OS X on a PC is possible, but very hackish"
Have you tried? It's really pretty striaghtforward, even easier than XP, IMHO. Even on non-intel X86 hardware.
http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page - Threephaserebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was thinking Blanka from Street Fighter myself...
I'm glad to see my gamble payed off. I bought my MacBook Pro hoping that eventually someone would get Win XP to boot on it. I still need XP for all the reasons listed previously. I was getting a little nervous back there. Words cannot express my excitement and graditiude towards those 1337 h4xx0r5 out there! I'm very happy to have OS X now but sadly I'm still tied to Windows. - Oobitsa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yes indeed, it occasionally, must be done. Just like downloading porn from the internet. It makes you feel dirty, but you gotta do it.
- cgesolo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9You do realize that a mac has a right-click? Mac has been able to right-click for a while now, plug in any 2 button mouse and you got a right-click.
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I couldn't agree more.
- jewdass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4amen.
- bluehouse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Sounds like some weird geek porn... Come on in and see some hot Windows on Mac action
- zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5HAH I saw this on hack-a-day. LOL
"The only reason not to run XP on a Mac is that XP sucks… which is a pretty good reason." - Takumi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes there is there is no reason that this is a bad turn of events
- eadnams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wonder whats gonna happen now...Apple building a hardware block? MS Freaking out? Legal repercussions? So cool!
Will this even matter? I hope so, if this catches on, and is easy enough to get running, maybe Apple can get an even larger market share, good for them. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5microsoft has said they would love to see xp running on the mac.. so it doesnt look like they'll be freaking out..
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think this is a great accomplishment. All I need to do is buy a Mac w/ an Intel processor and get my copy of XP Pro free from my college.
- sireza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4all new imacs & powermacs comes with 2 button mouse
- capran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Heh, and don't forget Paypal's cut. I used to think Paypal was free, until I sold my PB G4 for $1700, and Paypal required I sign up for a "Premium" account to receive the money, and they took 2.5%. Not sure what it is for almost $14K. I'd wonder if there'd be taxes involved too? Or would there, since its a private transaction between citizens?
- tagliare, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Nice. Once they get all the driver issues worked out, we'll be set!
- eadnams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4think its mutually beneficial?
- Takumi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Um no... i think it was blanka that did most of the coding
- iBookG4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Once they release an iBook Intel version (or substantially lower the price of the Pro), I'm very excited for this. As much as I hate Windows, running it is a necessary evil, as I sometimes run into situations where simply booting into Windows for 1/2 an hour would be very helpful. Did I mention that I'm very excited?
- cakesale, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Now he can buy a pc with the prize money!
- noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There is a video already.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=nzH6OFpXgzI - johnnybluejeans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually the "Brilliant!" thing comes from Guinness commercials..
- machx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Although im much more a fan of helping getting Darwine (WINE on Mac) working im glad this is finally working. For those little apps I have to run in windows for classes I can finally run natively and just get my work done faster. Now to get my macbook pro and sell my powerbook.
- hexix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think it's more about the options. People like to know that when they buy a computer they can do this or that with it. So now before someone hands Apple $2k for a macbook they know that they can install multiple operating systems and it can be their solution for everything. Makes the $2k price tag not seem as high.
- ggko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4There's an "internal" mouse?
