- FredFredrickson, on 12/17/2008, -7/+24This conference was one of the biggest, and most widely covered of its kind, it had people frothing at the mouth for weeks in advance, and a company as small as Apple couldn't have hoped to have a better platform for firing up journalists and bloggers alike.
Why are all these people suddenly coming out of the woodwork and saying things like, "oh yes, this was completely expected" or "Apple has always wanted to do this"?
Can we stop with these lame conjectures and just wait and see what Apple has to say about? - Mexrocker, on 12/18/2008, -1/+11Seriously, this is like the 10th article I've seen in the past few days... I like Apple just as much as the next [non hipster elite douchebag] guy, but geez give it a rest.
- wrenchone, on 12/18/2008, -2/+11I had no idea at all Apple was pulling out of MacWorld. None at all...
- inactive, on 12/18/2008, -4/+12You did, enough to click into this article and comment.
- mdude85, on 12/18/2008, -0/+7"And so, Apple has raced forwards with great abandon. Remember the striped Apple logo? Perhaps Apple's most valuable, most iconic visual brand, with twenty-two years of history. Gone. How about Apple Garamond, the typeface introduced with the original Macintosh advertising campaign, that defined the public face of Apple in the post-Apple-II era? Also gone."
Wow, making a rainbow striped half-bitten apple into a solid-colored half-bitten apple, and changing a marketing typeface from a serif font to a sans-serif font? Is this really considered "fearless" corporate management? - adrianc1982, on 12/18/2008, -0/+7How about:
3.- Apple stock beaten down to death everytime a macworld was going on because the hype was too much only the oh mighty iphone could fight that and you are talking about the iphone on a non-iphone world
4.- Lauching products AFTER xmas season was very stupid and bad for business
5.- Having a deadline even if products were not ready and had to build something really good to fight that hype YEAR after YEAR - td001, on 12/18/2008, -2/+9Apple now has its own retail stores in every major market, in which they COMPLETELY control every aspect of image and marketing, they don't really NEED to have Macworld Expo any longer as a platform to launch their products and generate interest. Not suprised to see Steve Jobs duck out. Ive also watched Apples presence leave every major educational technology conference in the last 2 years..
Their business model has moved away from the 'conference' way of thinking.
Is it sad to see it go? sure, it's the end of an era, but not the end of the (Mac) world... - definedbywords, on 12/18/2008, -1/+7Does anyone really care about this anymore?
- Nothlit, on 12/18/2008, -0/+6Apple did not cancel Macworld. Apple does not own, organize, or host Macworld. Apple is merely an attendee at Macworld, just like every other company who shows up there. IDG World Expo organizes and hosts Macworld.
- MacParrot, on 12/18/2008, -0/+4Drunk and stupid is no way to go through life koft2. Seek help
- inactive, on 12/18/2008, -0/+4Because we've been listening since Jobs first announced that Apple wanted out...in 2002.
Moron. - MacParrot, on 12/18/2008, -0/+4Only if de plane is in Egypt
- mrBitch, on 12/18/2008, -2/+5Nice bit of opinion (mainly backed up by Apple's history of producing it's own "killers" rather than waiting for another company to produce an "iPod Killer" etc) FTA :
" Though painful and jarring in the short term, these kinds of moves are a big part of what makes Apple great. While other companies are paralyzed with indecision, or cling relentlessly to what has worked in the past, or are seduced by sentimentality, Apple is busy murdering its darlings. " - mdude85, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3Just because you change the colors of a logo does not mean the logo is no longer identifiable. It's still a half-bitten apple for pete's sake. Microsoft changed the look of the Windows logo several times over in the last 15 years and ain't nobody writing an article about Microsoft's "fearless" corporate techniques.
- inactive, on 12/18/2008, -1/+3Uhh...it didnt strike anyone by surprise who've been paying attention all this time, and listening to apple say every single goddamn year "we don't want to do macworld anymore" since 2002.
You guys are ***** idiots. - nullcodes, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2There are multiple perfectly logical reasons for Apple to withdraw from Macworld.
1. They want third party Mac software product vendors a chance to shine
2. Macworld organizers wanted unreasonable terms
3. ..
Umm ok there's at least two. - diggidigi, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2This article is one big BS. Apple is fearful. It's obvious Jobs can't deliver anymore and he's soon to be gone, so Apple is retracting. Investors should do the same. Apple as we know may soon to be gone.
- asskicker32, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1yes.
- HATU8, on 12/17/2008, -2/+3Then what would we talk about?
- inactive, on 12/18/2008, -2/+3System 7? Might aswell use Windows 3.1
Buried for ArsInaccura. - Fustigations, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1No I'm not!
- BrendanSheehan, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1After this year (2009) yeah.
- nullcodes, on 12/18/2008, -6/+7Steve Jobs has a superiority complex, having to show off his wares like a used car salesman is demeaning to him.
It doesn't fit the elitist mold to have to peddle one's wares. And he's at least partially right too, if you have a product that can stand on its own .. let it.
I wouldn't be surprised if he shows up anyway .. maybe as an attendee .. that would be hilarious. - TheNeptune, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1People, Windows and Microsoft are completely different brands. The Windows logo has changed a lot, that's to be expected. Microsoft as a company hasn't changed it's logo since 1994.
I'm not arguing that Apple is indeed "fearless"... just clarifying the context so you can better draw your own opinion. - trogdor282, on 12/18/2008, -1/+2See, Jobs has modified the main deflector dish to extend the Reality Distortion Field to a radius of 25000 kilometers. There is no longer any need to physically appear in person. Your brain now belongs to Steve.
- Ksg89, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1There will be somthing to replace it, macworld, sounds more MAC orientated.
- asskicker32, on 12/18/2008, -1/+2Its sad, and Im going to miss going to Macworld SF every year, but it is an unnecessary expense, given all of their infrastructure for a launching point of their new products.
- TaintBrush, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1Dugg for your use of the word "wares" multiple times.
- djsputnik, on 12/19/2008, -0/+1imagine what this could be setting up. product introductions on every single display of in your local apple store. and as soon as the presentation is over, the product rolls out of the back room. you want media hype & a buying frenzy, move the intro out of the convention and into the retail show room.
- javaroast, on 12/18/2008, -1/+2Fearless? Really I could do this with almost any company and make the same argument. Even MS... Killing of DOS based OS's, changing to the Ribbon bar in Office, changing the Windows Logo. If you look closely giant trade shows aren't exactly in vogue right now, so the move by Apple looks to be more the final nail for the giant trade shows. Don't get me wrong it's a big change, but using the term fearless is just hyperbole and nothing more.
- Nothlit, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1So you will stop going to Macworld just because Apple won't attend anymore? That seems silly.
- wonderchemist, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1Compared to companies like GM, it sure is!
- awhiteflame, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1Bingo. Bingo. Bingo.
- e2superman, on 12/18/2008, -1/+2because apple does everything right? snarf.
- MacParrot, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1mdude relax. I'm not saying that it wasn't a little over done, just that brands have great value and when you change them you take a risk.
- leamanc, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1Cut through all the BS people...adrianc1982 got it right.
- seobro, on 12/19/2008, -0/+1Steve Jobs is dying, he could not even do a farewell goodbye at mac world. So sad actually......
- moxley, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1I agree with you - but at the same time I can tell you why they probably changed it: I imagine they wanted something that had the same recognizable iconography, but didn't look so dated and early 80s. It's a pretty typical thing.
- wonderchemist, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1My guess? Apple didn't want to do this until Tuesday, when IDG preannounced Steve Jobs as the keynote speaker.
Now the first rule of Apple Club? You don’t talk about deals with Apple Club before Apple! By breaking this rule IDG incurred the Wrath of Steve. - adaire, on 12/19/2008, -0/+1It's a dumb move. The company has a rock star status. Even us non-mac people feel envious of the Mac culture. I almost wanted to convert to be a part of it. Like the discontinuation of the 150Gb ipod and the lack of features on the iPhone, Apple has made a series of bad moves lately.
- Virgule, on 12/19/2008, -0/+16.- If Steve were to write another keynote he'd go like AAARRRRGHHH
- mishaneah, on 12/18/2008, -1/+1If a fanboy and anti-fanboy reply to a post at exactly the same time, do they annihilate each other?
Seriously. This article is well written and much larger than the whole macworld thing. It's a thoughtful look at their fundamental business model and how come they are still around and growing whilst business professors for decades have been pointing to their imminent collapse. - inactive, on 12/18/2008, -9/+9I agree with the consensus of "who cares"
- freezerburn666, on 12/18/2008, -1/+1well i'd say the windows logo has changed very much since 3.1 to vista
- Fustigations, on 12/18/2008, -0/+0I enjoy reading internet arguments about computers. I get a good laugh. So I guess I do for that reason...
- rimantas, on 12/19/2008, -1/+1Killing is not exactly the same as euthanasia. Discontinuing iPod mini (most successful at that time?) was a killing.
I wouldn't say DOS was killed, I think Windows are still haunted by the ghost of that system… - mdude85, on 12/19/2008, -0/+0Yes, it is a pretty typical thing - very typical in fact, and yet for some reason Ars feels the need to write a story about it. Must be a slow news day in the tech world.
- inactive, on 12/19/2008, -0/+0People is not news or surprising. Stop thinking MacWorld is a big deal to Apple or the people who attend. It's not and has not been for YEARS! MacWorld, like most tech conferences are a thing of the past.
- frontaxle, on 12/18/2008, -2/+2Should make for more floorspace at the show. Who would go now?
