- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+150I fail to see where "FUNNY" comes into the story though
- Zakir, on 10/12/2007, -15/+56I'd vote for the Cisco iPhone (if it was an actual cell phone)! Honestly, I don't need all those other features in a phone a cell-phone. I need something small and simple. that looks like a... phone! Plus I'm $400 richer. (now to be dugg down.)
- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -9/+44Damn, that sure was funny! I've got to tell that one to allll my friends!
-.- - Iffrat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32apple owns the letter i any applefanboy knows this
- kyoung989, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Yeah, I'm not sure why this is marked "Funny"
Each has it's merits and each has its detractions. They aren't even competing devices (except over the name, that is). - lazydrumhead, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28yeah. i'm pretty sure i'm sticking with the iphone.
wait... - Snowy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20 0o0Moylan0o0
Me and everyone else who works in a secure federal building would like to tell you that you are an idiot.
You should have heard the groan in the office when the Apple iPhone was announced with a camera. - GamingNews, on 10/12/2007, -10/+21All I need to know about the Apple phone is:
1. It does not have a single function that I do not already have
2. After more than 2.5 years, it's still not finished and won't be for 6 more months
At $500, I would expect it to have at least one new feature. Yeah, it's got a touch screen, which means nothing to me. That's about it. Anything you can do on your $500 Apple phone 6 months from now could have been done for 2 years already on phones costing under $200. Mine was under $100.
And I agree with the first reply above - Cisco gets it, not only because they own the name, but because they have internet calling. Digg me down all you want, but if Apple isn't revolutionary enough to think to include VOIP, then their creative thinking is slipping. - Shenaniganz08, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10hahah oh wow that was a laugh riot. /end sarcasm
i could see how it would have been funny had they made other comparisons ( does it blend.... )but this is pretty lame
digg down for false advertisement - daroot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10apple fanboys dont have humor.
not funny - cmiz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10i'm not sure WHY they'd have the same naming convention... but the iPhone name copyright has been around since 1996 which is long before apple used iAnything. Cisco obtained it in 2000 from a company that they bought. this can't possibly be copyright squatting if they've had it for that long.
- surasshu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10What made you think that? No fanboy ever has brains.
I do like the design of the iPhone, I must admit. But for $500, I could buy two phones, two iPods (both with larger harddrives) and have money over to feed a third world country for a month.
Dugg down the article for excessive unfunniness and scary Apple zealotry. - arnar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"I'm like the Cisco iPhone..............................................FOR ME TO POOP ON!!"
hmm.. you're saying you want to poop on yourself?
Anyways.. comparing a wifi ip phone to a cellphone is a bit stupid imo - unless Apple has rights on i the name belongs to Cisco. Hey, maybe Apple could release something they call iNternet. - wastern, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11>>Cisco iPhone doesnt even have a camera, cmon even if you dont use it much, all phones these days SHOULD atleast have 640x480 a camera
ummm....why? You do not that not everyone needs a camera or wants a camera. Some business as well as 'adult establishments' won't allow cameras inside making things rather difficult for those with camera phones. I've had a few places check my phone and had me either turn it off, or in most case go and take it out to my car. - umdmatto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They should compare the PS3 and the IPhone
- tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"MacNewsOnline has a humorous take on a faceoff between the two phones, with the intention of determining which product deserves to wear the title of the TRUE iPhone."
There was nothing humorous here. Also, I dont need a chart that compares a phone from 2000 to a phone from 2007. Im fully aware which phone will be better. And the product that deserves to 'wear the title of the TRUE iPhone' is the one who owned the trademark first. - tdowling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7People need to understand the point behind most Apple products: usability and accessibility. A successful company typically doesn't make its money on introducing brand new things; the success usually comes from improvement on good ideas and technologies that had previously been implemented imperfectly, and then marketing the improved product to the right people.
Just remember the initial response to the iPod by a lot of the techies out there. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14The point is that the article was written by some Apple fan to try to mock and bash the Cisco phone for no other reason than the fact that it has the name THEY think should just be given to Apple. Screw the law.
Yet another typical Apple fascist. - Hortnon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@node3
It applies to me and everyone I work with.
Whether you want to believe it or not, there is a large number of people that kind of feature effects. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"It's really aggravating how legit your argument is, but every time I see any comments which puts the iPhone in the dimmest of light, regardless of how rational and honest, they are dugg down."
Apple fans DO NOT allow critical arguments against anything from Apple to go unburied. If you dont say that this is the greatest device ever made or preface your comments with "I think the iphone is awesome...", then you are going to get attacked.
With this device, they have seen something they did not expect. Fellow Apple users passing doubts on it's chances. This was supposed to be an all out celebration of the Master Phone. The rabid zealots are attacking them as "haters" and "whiners", and just modding down every single even slightly negative comment into the basement. Come back in 3 hours after they have awaken, and see how negative your comments score is. - Mannon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10iPhone has:
Software update via iTunes..
it's not just another cell-phone, it can have "OS" updates, and tons of new features.. It's rare or even unknown to some to make an software update on their cell-phone..
Great UI:
Most phones don't even come close to great, half baked? maybe, *****.. most probably
Wide-screen:
Yeah, it actually has a big screen you can look at, and a great screen too.
Processing-power:
Something has to do all the nifty eye candy, and when games comes on iTunes, they'll probably look gorgeous.
Memory:
4-8GB Memory is not that bad, it could be bigger, but not bad at all..
Camera:
Well some likes 'em and some don't.. but 2Mp ain't bad, wonder what optic they use?
- HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Gee... Mac fanboys writing an article to trash Cisco because they own the trademark on iPhone. Releasing this after Cisco sues Apple over use of the trademark is just asking for more trouble. I thought Mac-boys had brains?
- cmiz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@bking: what about 1996 and the iMac?
"Announced in May 1998 and shipped in August, the iMac was Apple's computer for the new millennium."
http://www.apple-history.com/?page=gallery&model=imac - sneakywombat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4cisco owns the trademark name - end of story.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Can you hear me now?
- Xophmeister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4In what was was this "humorous"?
- tdskate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree, Apple's iPhone should have Internet Calling.
Maybe it's a future feature. - javaroast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@bking As has been pointed out it was 1998. Not only that but it was blue. Go back to bed
- sickanimations, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Cisco owns the rights to the name and have branded a legitimate product with it. Get the ***** over it everybody.
- amenic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Can't apple find a better name?
iCall - iCell - iMobile - iPodPhone - iPod2 - iTalk - iVoice - PICK ONE! :)
If 'I' stands for Internet, than the Linksys phone makes better use of the name - if the Apple version did VOIP it would be the absolute bomb but I guess that wouldn't have landed a nice fat juicy deal with Cingular. - Itkovian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If the iPhone does one thing, it is generating comments from people. I like Apple gear, but I can still be quite objective, I hope. The Apple phone packs more punch than Cisco's phone. If you don't like or need that, fine, go for a less expensive and less gadget-laden model. But for the heaps of people buying phones with camera's and a lot of other stuff on it, this phone probably rocks. And the no-VoIP argument makes no sense whatsoever. The Apple phone has WiFi, and it comes with an OS that supports everything VoIP requires. So it can _easily_ be added.
A phone that bundles a lot of stuff is not what everybody needs or wants. My mom, for example, would just use the phone capability, and nothing else. Friends of mine would use everything that it offers. This is why there are different phone models available on the market. - jackcall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@omatsei: A couple of weeks before Christmas I bought a Qtek 2020i(aka htc alpine) for less than $50, and no it wasn't used or stolen, I bought it brand new from a large telecom. It can do everything the iPhone can except for playing fairplay drm and store 4GB AND I'm not tied to a two year contract, it was only six months. As soon as I get an upgrade to WM 5.0, I will be able to store 12GB on an external(meaning I can have as many as I like and switch between them) memory card and use skype.
I was kinda hoping for more from the iPhone, I'm just gonna buy that iPod I've been putting off while waiting for the iPhone. - afwjam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You guys don't get it do you. What new features did the iPod bring? Why was it $400 dollars!?! Why is it now the most popular MP3 player? Was it the features? The price? hmmmmmmm. Maybe there is something more to it...?
- cello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You screwed up the Triumph joke ... hence digg downs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Who cares? Honestly, if the cisco had better reception capabilities i'd go with that. It's nice to have tons of features on your phone, providing the phone has a decent signal and wont have you going "HELLO!? ARE YOU THERE?!" every 5 minutes.
- daveboudreau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hilarious?
- sulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What's the point of this comparison? It makes no more sense than comparison of Random product of Random company A vs Random product of Random company B.
They forgot one more criterion: Legitimate use of trademark? yes/no - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not THAT funny.... because the cisco is only 165$.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's a comparison, what more do you need to compare the two other than spec sheets?
- Qwirk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Tossing some actual facts on the fire. (They are interesting too!)
Apple Imac patent: http://www.google.com/patents?vid=USPATD493454&id=HMYSAAAAEBAJ&dq=imac
Apple Imac Trademark: http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=fggqqa.2.9
iphone patent: http://www.google.com/patents?vid=USPATD411534&id=boYZAAAAEBAJ&dq=iphone
iphone trademark: http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=fggqqa.3.6
I believe this information clearly shows that the iphone has been around longer and if either company has a right to the name it's Cisco. Note that some of the patent parts used on both items were patented for use long before the actual product came out. (I thought this was interesting as a re-use of product, iphones parts came out before the imacs as well.) - michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Its funny that sometimes people use the word funny in place of interesting.
In this case neither one applies. - netferret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not to mention the price tag difference.
- tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@afwjam
the ipod was the first mp3 player that came with 100% better usability than any other mp3 player. the wheel was so much better than anything else that was on the market. and it was a new market when it did come out. cellphones have been around for technically 20 years now. this isnt a fresh market they are breaking into. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Exactly. But I think a lot of people were rubbed the wrong way when Apple users start running around saying that all other phones are now junk because of this.
Their arrogance is what keeps comments like yours from representing what hope is the sane, majority of Apple users. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6"what the hell is a fanboy anyway? A boy that rides fans?"
A fanboy, in the case of Apple, is a person that acts almost like a unpaid spokesman/salesman/attack dog/apologist for that company.
They are the Borg/Daleks of the computing world. - crugg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cisco is twice the captial that Apple has. They have the power and will be able to finish this fight. Which by the way is a legal one not a fight over which product is better. It will probably end in settlement and Apple will pay up.
- kjart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@omatsei
"The iPhone has a built-in email program and support for WiFi internet. My cell phone that's 2 years old and cost $200 doesn't. Perhaps you could point me to a cell phone available 1 year ago (or even now) that costs under $200 and includes e-mail over wifi?"
With a 2 year contract with the cell provider (you apparently need a 2 year contract with Cingular to get an iPhone)? I'm sure you could be a Windows mobile or Blackberry based device that could do that for around that price. $200 might be a bit low, though $300 should be pretty easy. - mediaprone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am going out on a limb here, but I think "i" has changed meaning over the years. It seems "i" is more of a stigma more than anything, but I would say that now "i" would mean interactive. Case in point, the iJoy chair is not connected to the internet, but it is interactive.
As much as I enjoy the iPod, and as much as I support the Apple brand, the damn name belongs to Cisco...there can not be an arguement there.
Ok...so the stupid phone costs a lot...all new devices do. CD players back in the day could run well over $1,000. Until consumers start consuming, the price won't come down.
Last but not least, all products are up for grabs. Something new comes out today, tomorrow another company improves upon it. If not for that, we'd still be using those stupid ass bag phones.
I'm done... - hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2its not done yet guys. even steve jobs himself said that there were placeholder images on the phone. make your speculations in june when it comes out
- Greyarea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Come on flag, we all know you're the biggest Apple fanboy here. Why else do you feel compelled to post in almost _every single Apple article_ ?
