- sdbryan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2At the risk of stating the obvious the market for resolution for video is analogous to what we have already seen about the market for high quality audio. (Or more precisely the iTMS and Apple are making the assumption that attitudes will be similar). For many years we have had a higher quality audio standard with CD audio with some attempts at a higher resolution standard (SACD and DVD-A). But consumers have embraced lower quality (MP3, AAC) when it provides greater convenience.
It appears we are witnessing the same phenomenon with video. We have had DVD video for many years and broadcast TV has been upgrading to HDTV over the last 8 years. But internet distribution seems to be aimed at a significantly lower resolution.
The new element this time is that the gray market (Bit Torrent, et al) is making the higher resolution video available without DRM. So it is both more convenient, because of no DRM, and higher quality. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. - manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@PhilliesBlunt
I don't have a video iPod either, but I've still bought every episode of the Office and a few random episodes of other shows, because I believe in the idea of a la carte TV and really want it to go somewhere. - vannoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ Rosco
Usenet (a.b.howard-stern) and Videora... It's kind of like iTMS, but free.. On-Demand episodes are posted there usually within hours after they start showing. - ryan_merket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We want John Stewart.
dig for South Park... - seanalltogether, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now in glorious 320x240 resolution!
- sawxblog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Once they get the Daily Show on there, I will be a happy man...
- jasonwea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is great getting more content but I'm not buying any episodes online until:
* It's available in Australia (afaik, the TV shows are on iTMS are US only at the moment)
* The ability to play back via my MythTV frontend. I'm not plugging my display into my Mac just to watch a few shows.
* Resolution is at least 640x360. On a 2 metre wide screen you can imagine how big those pixels are from a 320x240 feed.
* Widescreen. Since everything on iTMS is 320x240 this means they are cropping shows like Lost into 4:3. Ugh, no thanks.
For shows which are many months or years behind the US in syndication here I'll continue to use BitTorrent. For everything else, my DVB tuners work great. I even occasionally watch the adverts. - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I could care less until this is available in iTunes Canada.
- rndmculture, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And the TV networks make $1.44 on each purchase...
http://digg.com/technology/Networks_get_$1.44_on_each_iTunes_Video_Purchase - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you like the higher quality BItTorrent files offer, but want to own video legally - buy from ITMS then download the higher quality torrent. That way you can at least feel you are doing the right thing morally, even if you may still get in trouble for distribution of content via BitTorrent while you are downloading...
Personally I am fine with paying $1.99 a show for the convienience of getting it when I want, and then buying a series DVD later when a season has ended. If content providers were smart they'd arrange some kind of discount for people who purchased most of a season to also buy the DVD set. - alphaterminus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As long as they don't have "Greatest American Hero"... no digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The pricing needs to change.
They have skits from SNL that almost 2 minutes long for $1.99. Who the ***** would buy that? - aburd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The resolution works great most of the time. Some shows that have lots of dark colors and the color black seem to have problems. Specifically Surface with its many underwater shots have a weird color-bleed effect when I watch them on my iPod. I don't know if this is a problem with the codec or the screen, but it can make the image confusing for as long as the color is in that range.
For the most part it looks great though. Shows like The Office with its bright colors look great too. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SPONGEBOB HELL YEAH!!!!
- scottauth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Snagged Beavis & Butthead this morning, excellent!
The Disney shorts are great! I cannot wait for more Goofy vids. - aburd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The problems with color and such are becoming an issue for me. At this point I can wait 2-3 hours after a show airs and get a 350 mg avi that looks HD quality on my HDTV and it downloads in 30 minutes to an hour via BT. This is all free. Or I can buy a show for $1.99 per show in a format that looks reasonably good on a 2 inch by 2 inch screen and just above horrible on the above mentioned big screen.
I want to be legit with this stuff and in the pursuit of this legitimacy they are asking me to sacrifice too much in terms of quality, imo. - jason7655, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0add some Aqua teen and other Adult Swim shows and I'm in.
- bob645, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Still not able to burn to disc and play on my dvd.
Worthless. Absolutely worthless, who actually is buying this crap and what are the watching it on?
Same with Google TV, what good is this?
At least the music is still usable. - chiefcrazytalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No need for an iPod, just watch on your laptop - thats what I do.
- perre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please Comedy Central: We want the Daily Show with John Stewart!!! You have know ideal how popular it's going to be! Meantime, we BitTorrent it.
- digger4445, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How about Survivorman or other things on the discovery channel
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweet!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The OFFICE BBC version is the best ever. USA version, ehhmmmm, it's ok.
Thank god, FINALLY more to watch....I thought life was incomplete till now... - PhilliesBlunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg for Beavis and Butthead. I want Adult Swim content.. NOW!!! Wait a minute, I don't own an Ipod. Digg anyway. This is cool.
- Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
I'm wondering if the new *Doctor Who* will be making it to iTunes this March, joining fellow programming from SciFi such as *Battlestar Galactica* already available on iTunes, courtesy of the agreement between Apple and SciFi's parent, NBC Universal.
Granted, I guess it all depends on if NBC Universal were able to cut Warner Home Video out of the distribution agreement here in the States. - gronne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there any Jhymn like program for iTunes video?
- tryferos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if they are trickling stuff out because of the bandwidth and infrastructure issues...
Imagine all of NBC, ABC, Disney, Universal stuff released and available at the same time. It would be cool, but would the demand cause laggy downloads? - Raider007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0apple is whipping those things out....
good job... - gronne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It'd be nice to download that stuff to PSP
- Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Put Howard Stern On-Demand on it, than it'll be worth while.
- uacheesehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0South Park, Jackass, and Comedy Central standup!!!
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They have the A-Team!!
- WombatControl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want the current season of Battlestar Galactica.
Your wish is granted. Well, it WAS granted, but several months ago. BSG was one of the first shows to go through iTunes. The current episodes are usually posted with 24-48 hours of airing. - manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They have Mitch Hedberg's comedy special.
Next to the Office, the best purchase I've made on the iTM(ovie)S so far. - rtilford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i wish they would get there arse into gear and sort all this out for the UK.
- willclarke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When there are duplicates, why do people have to digg the dupe with the stupidest title? There was another version of this story with an actually INFORMATIVE headline...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty Good shows but I feel kinda bad about the Other iTunes Music Stores none other than the US has TV shows haha oh well.
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The resolution is more or less a compromise - iTunes is offering these files as direct downloads to perhaps thousands of people at any given time (just as with the music). If they were to offer even full SDTV (640x480) over iTunes, the video files would near being four times larger, meaning that each download would take far longer and remove the element of convenience (not to mention, I don't think Apple would enjoy having to host that kind of content at a mere two bucks a pop). It is "good enough" for most people (just as the 128 kbps AACs are "good enough" quality for music downloads for most people) and people get the files rather quickly (even despite the number of people downloading at any given time), and Apple's bandwidth bill isn't as bad as it could be.
- Mutifus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great but what about the UK? :(
- jeromeerome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I will definetly be getting Comedy Centrals Mitch Hedberg and probably a couple South Park and Beavis and Butthead classic episodes.
- Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ vannoy
"First rule about Fight Club is, you do not talk about Fight Club."
;-) - Swampthing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great, I can finally add the "Mianus, CT" Jackass segment to my collection without having to buy all of Season One. Knoxville: "There's a big red truck in Mianus..."
- Xer0crash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They just need to add firefly now. Maybe that will get a second season started.
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm gonna get jackass right now! and by the way, for those who think the quality is bad, it really is not, i have a cable to run the video off of my ipod on to the tv and it looks absolutely great. like phoenixfury said, u do forget you are watching a little downloaded file off your ipod. If you don't own a video ipod right now, you should really buy one, its gonna get a whole lot better.
- GaryKing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does Steve Jobs know that 'the world' constitutes of more than just the United States? (Just kidding, of course, but I just want the TV content so badly! :) )
- pretentious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would pay money to have last nights Daily Show on my iPod for all my morning commutes.
I try that now with BT, but I have to stay up so late to find a tracker I might as well watch it then. Even when I do get a tracker I have to still have to convert it.
If they set up some type of subscription I'm all there. - kidjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0did Albrecht have insider info about that wildfire show?
- imperium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0freakin' Canadian iTunes sux. No video yet. Bastiches.
- Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do own an iPod, but it's not the iPod with video. However I do not have any issue with the resolution as it looks perfectly fine on my TV anyway. Granted dark scenes look crappy, but for the most part I often forget that I'm watching a downloaded file to begin with. This is also great for me as I do not have cable and our local ABC channel is too far for me to pick up at all. So to me Apple's video store is a godsend to me! For those of you that are knocking the resolution, just watch it on an anolog tv sometime. Trust me, it's really not that bad and it sure beats watching the same show with snow and commercials not to mention not being able to get it at all.
With that said, I really hope Apple picks up the WB! I love Smallville, but I currently have to watch it at my best friends, and he's terrible about keeping the latest greatest show long enough for me to watch it.
On a side note about people recomending bit torrenting the same shows. Granted yes I could just simply do that, but I find bit torrent to be slow not to mention (to my knowledge anyway) it's ilegal to download copyrighted tv shows. I feel a lot better about buying my shows and supporting them so they can continue to keep producing them. - Abydos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want iTunes to have some Stargate and some extras
