- Commodus, on 12/22/2007, -3/+32Let me know when AMD figures out how to not lag behind Intel in making smaller and faster chips -- then we can talk about monopolies.
- llsethj, on 12/22/2007, -1/+22Early 2008=Jan 15th
- chris9902, on 12/22/2007, -17/+34wasn't the idea of a UMPC largely dismissed at CES when Microsoft showed it off? Oh but now it's Apple it's the greatest thing in the world.
- inactive, on 12/22/2007, -7/+22Go compare the $79 Apple Mighty Mouse and ANY of Microsoft's products (from $9.99 upwards!) and come back and tell me that Apple "knows how to release a quality product".
- inactive, on 12/22/2007, -5/+20I love it how when Microsoft fanboys can't use the feature bash, they fall back on the old monopoly argument. There are tons of competition in the cell phone/smartphone market. I never see you guys complaining about the expensive phones from RIM. I guess expensive phones are only bad when it's Apple.
- Ireland, on 12/22/2007, -10/+21One word: 11" Multi-touch, Mac touch FTW yall, lol.. woot!
- bs0l, on 12/22/2007, -1/+10The guy in the background is like "Damn you ultra mobile PC... I'll get you..."
http://images.appleinsider.com/silverthorne-071221 ... - and303, on 12/22/2007, -0/+8What the hell are you talking about? Do you even know what a UMPC is?
- EvilAnimator, on 12/22/2007, -1/+9That's pretty bad trolling, jquipp. Surely you can do better.
- virtualball, on 12/22/2007, -2/+9*yawn* That argument isn't even right. In case you didn't know, the PDA/Smart Phone market has more than two companies in it and two companies working together shouldn't be a monopoly. Look at the Android, it's an "alliance" with tens of companies, isn't that, by your logic, a larger monopoly?
- happyseamonster, on 12/22/2007, -1/+7Your solution would be less innovation to keep pace with AMD?
- REUYL, on 12/22/2007, -0/+6If Apple releases a UMPC, then maybe other computer vendors will kick their UMPC programs into high gear. Don't get me wrong, Apple's mobile computers are great, but competition is good.
- rragle, on 12/22/2007, -1/+6I guess Apple Insider will be the next one shut down by Apple if this is true.
- deadbaby, on 12/22/2007, -2/+7I would think Apple embracing the open x86 architecture would be the opposite of a monopolistic behavior. Intel is currently the best partner for Apple (at all levels) but if that changes they can call up AMD, Via or anyone else who is interested in making an x86 CPU.
- trebe, on 12/22/2007, -2/+7January 15th couldn't come any sooner
- bxblox, on 12/22/2007, -1/+6Make it a macbook touch pro and i will buy it immediately
- lunarworks, on 12/22/2007, -2/+7Apple actively participated in the actual development of the PowerPC series of chips. That would kinda make them a rival, if I am not mistaken.
Remember: They ran famous ads denouncing the Pentium. - antitab, on 12/22/2007, -0/+4"The two firms have been rubbing the sticks ever since the Spring of 2005"
I missed "the" between "rubbing" and "sticks" the first time through and did a massive double-take. - dboone74, on 12/22/2007, -3/+6"Apple Inc. will form a closer bond with once-rival Intel Corp"
Um... wouldn't Apple have to have been in the micro-chip business to be a "rival" to Intel. I think a more accurate lead sentence would be.
"Apple Inc. will form a closer bond with once-vendor-they-didn't-use Intel Corp" - jamesb0i, on 12/22/2007, -2/+5seriously dumb comment
- inactive, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3"rubbing the sticks" eh?
- deadbaby, on 12/22/2007, -14/+17UMPC is a fine idea it's just implemented VERY poorly to date. The hardware itself isn't bad but I can't imagine running a standard Windows or OSX interface on a device that small. It would be incredibly frustrating. What Apple will probably do is use an iPhone style GUI with multi-touch. The iPhone SDK was probably delayed specifically to include support for this new device. So yes, if Apple corrects the biggest design flaw of the UMPC I would be interested in buying one.
- chris9902, on 12/22/2007, -4/+7that's not Microsoft's UMPC was. go a look it up before you comment.
- clockdist, on 12/22/2007, -2/+5They'll just make the umpcs something worth buying.
- johnpaul191, on 12/22/2007, -1/+3I think the second half of "closer bond with once-rival" is the important part. Compared to the shots fired back and forth in the past, them working together at all is something few people would have guessed in the past.
It is also not like Intel is making exclusive super-chips for Apple. It's possible Apple might get *certain* chips ahead of other manufacturers, but not others. That early break doesn't last that long anyway, so who cares? - BrianPower, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2I worded it incorrectly, I meant to say; One joke. :P
PS, "Your session has expired for the 5000th time. It's time to break Kevin Rose's legs." - iofthestorm, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2Hello? Have you not heard of android?
http://code.google.com/android/ - tolbs, on 12/22/2007, -1/+3The Xbox 360 is quality product if you ask me.
- hit9ent, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2I dont care if your a pc or mac fan boy... the future is looking awesome and im so happy to be alive for all of this!
- johnpaul191, on 12/22/2007, -2/+4How is it a monopoly? Apple doesn't ship enough machines for Intel to make them exclusive chips. *If* something like that did happen, i'm sure a few companies would invest in AMD (or somebody else) to send a shot across the bow of Intel. Not unlike record labels making deals with Amazon that they won't make with iTMS. It's good for everyone, except Intel, if there is at least one other chip maker up at the top.
- naonao, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2I smell your mum.
- inactive, on 12/22/2007, -1/+3Don't you mean, "paid off with an obscene amount of money so that they won't publish secrets protected by NDAs?"
- Abjure, on 12/22/2007, -5/+7Eight words, actually, not counting 'lol', Woot is a word now. :)
- inactive, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1It's a good time to be a geek!
- PicklePower, on 12/23/2007, -0/+1You don't know if it's gonna fold or not. This is Apple.
- chris9902, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1It was running a full version of Windows.
- tolbs, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1umm, no it wasn't....
- Tippis, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1"it won't fold per-say"
You're obviously not applying enough force... - chris9902, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Microsoft didn't make any of the hardware. It was running a full version of Windows Vista with some changes to handle the smaller screens.
- rebotfc, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1You're absolutely right , don't know why you are being dugg down.
I guess digg is now just flame spam for the masses... - DigDugDigger, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Don't they understand viral marketing... does anyone think the iPhone would have done as well as it did if it didn't have years of hype and rumors about it? If they really go around shutting down every rumor site it's only going to hurt their sales in the long run.
- tolbs, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Lunarworks is correct, I don't understand why he's being dugg down.
- Ireland, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Good one guys. And yes, if you didn't know already I was being sarcastic. I know what I meant Brian, but I do agree with you that it's time to break Kevin's legs. This is "beyond a joke" now, as it was a month ago.
- DigDugDigger, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Allow/Deny?
- Ireland, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1A book folds, as does a MacBook, a Mac touch won't fold, as it will have no moving parts. It may have a small flip-out rest on the back to keep it up a little when resting on a desk though, but it won't fold per-say. So you can get rid of all references of books fro it's name right away. "Mac touch", mark my words.
*puts crystal ball away* :D - CraigJ, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1seriously. look up that word.
- habenneas, on 12/22/2007, -1/+2lynxcache mirror: http://lynxcache.com/cache/AppleInsider_Exclusive_ ...
- Karmavs, on 12/22/2007, -1/+2At least they have a business model…
- rebotfc, on 12/22/2007, -1/+1Because Windows Mobile is *****.
