- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28They won't call it the iPhone. They're just snagging up the name so no one else can use it. It's less expensive to this than to have Apple Legal storm down upon the infringing company.
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Next news story: Apple trademarks the letter "i".
- bking, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Wow, guys. Keep the "i"Puns coming. They never get old.
While we're at it, how about some "wii=penis" jokes and Chuck Norris facts? - revmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10apparently not... iRiver?
ring ring ring ring ring ring ring... ibananaphone.... - l0th, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9yeah, the iPhone is like god: although no one has proof it does (or will ever) exist, people have talked so much about it that the idea is very real and the control of the name alone is worth money. Logical move on Apple's part.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I agree. iPod, iMac, iLife, etc are the current "i" products by apple. Note that they aren't "iMusic" "iComputer", or "iMediaEditingSuite". Apple would not use such a bland name, but would also not like anyone else using it, either.
- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8iChuck will roundhouse kick all those who oppose the Wii.
- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Motorolla should have put out an iPhone before them and stolen all their steam. What can they do, claim they own the letter i?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I agree with that absolutely, they already have an iPhone, its called Motorola.
Anyway, Leo Laporte has probably woken up Apple to the fact that they need to be more aggressive in their trademark filings - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Apple could make a good argument that they indeed own the trademark on electronic devices named iSomething. They were clearly the first ones to use that naming scheme and trademark law is purposely designed to allow companies to protect a brand more than a specific name. For example, you couldn't trademark "iMicrosoft" because clearly the intention is to infringe on Microsoft's brand.
- meatago, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6iAgree
- fvjohnson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Who gives a #&^$ what they call it?! As long as it works better than all the other crappy phones we have to chose from, they could call it "iAss" and I'd still buy it.
- virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2iRiver
- pyro858, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3iDont think Apple is going to make the iPhone any time soon. They are move worried about the iTV which is copyrighted and will be renamed to something more creative and expansion on their iTunes video store. Steve won't move into that right now but, he does want Apple to be with everyone at all times trying to make them the multimedia guru. iSee good things in the future for apple and cool stuff for everyone else!
- myfanwy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2can they TM a word that's been in popular use for so long? i've seen it used here dozens of times, i'm sure /. el reg and wired are similar.
- mvanhorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Couldn't someone else have come on the market with a phone and trademarked it iPhone then sued Apple later? Was no one smart enough to do this or is this not possible because Apple owns the 'i" which doesn't make any sense.
- Iceduck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4They definitely shouldn't call it iPhone. I still think it will be called something with iPod in it, just because it's a valuable brand that people respond to. Unless of course they don't want to risk harming the iPod brand with a potential failure.
- dkocolin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2good to see digg still has a boner for the iphone, which has been overhyped how many years now?
i bet it will come out right after the true video ipod that came out a year ago.... er... 6 months ago... 2 months ago... any minute now! - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3iWill.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yes, if you are a company making money the courts will side with the company making money before a couple diggers any day. Obviously it gets a bit more technical but its mainly a contest of who has the bigger pocketbook.

(trademark that bitches) - knowall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Apple reg'd the iPhone trademark in some other countries years ago.
- qfry, on 11/30/2008, -0/+0Cheap unlocked iPhones at http://iphone.auctionguide.biz/
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Q2 - 2007 - Wait, and watch....
- JustinPM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Think they might have a problem with iPhone if they just started to TM the name.
https://iphone.nuvio.com/html/ - logic6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Or this... http://www.teledex.com/ The company who owns the trademark for "iPhone"
- sporktek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You know, if I were in charge of Apple, I'd trademark all sorts of ***** to get the rumor mills cranking.
That being said, an iPod phone would kick ass and I hope they make one.
I'm just saying, If I were Steve I'd probably toss a copy of Webster's Dictionary down the stairs and have my people trademark 'i[whatever]' every day right after breakfast and before nappies. - daborg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would probably buy an iPhone. One less device to have in your pocket. And no, I don't want any Motorola crap.
- flashboy131, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wouldn't buy an iAss. "what's that?.... "
"my iAss..."
that's just gross dude. - virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just tried it and landed on
"iTaco" "iTertiary consumer" "iMoniker" "iCantStopMakingBadJokes" - daborg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1iAss, lol, I want one!
- dcanton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Apple applied for the iPhone trade-mark in Canada in October 2004. It's being opposed.
For details see http://www.canton.elegal.ca/archives/2006/10/#a000906 - ineser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0They just want everything starts with "i" being trademarked by them
- NsinU8, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Who are they going to hawk this phone to? What service provider wants to give up software & download control to apple. Disney mobile, T Mobile? Apple is just stepping on everyones toes now. It will be interesting to see if they can get a footing in the phone market. Im sure they're gonna put a camera in there somehow.
- awhiteflame, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I rather like 'iChat Mobile' (as seen in a fake mockup I saw)
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Tell that to iNtel
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0iWii
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1So, all phones are 'crappy' unless Apple make them...erm, i'm under the impression you're a *****, no idea why, but i am.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2God, I wish there was a way to stop these 'iPhone' stories showing up on digg.
- AstroPHX, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1@Ireland,
You can call it the Motorola ROKR. (In case you've been asleep, the "iPhone" - a.k.a. ROKR - was released 13 months ago to little fanfare.) Without any full understanding or knowledge of the actual agreement Apple and Motorola made, I can only guess as to what would happen if Apple chose to release a phone that wasn't badged by Motorola. Thus, an iPhone(tm) that calls your friends and has a 100GB solid-state drive will not be in our future anytime soon. - DBCubix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Better run and grab IPee, IWii, IPorn, ISeymourButts etc. before Apple does.
- andydumi, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I might be something like ITalk.
I didnt think you could get a trademark and not use it for something. Then you would be supressing creativity. - Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1That company just keeps rolliing out the creativity. iPhone indeed...they aren't even trying anymore (backdate the last part of this comment to about 2003). iDiots.
- cr125er, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4iCare. No really iDo.
It's about time they ***** or get off the pot with this thing. - flashboy131, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Snarf Snarf
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2I guess we know for definite what they want to call the phone now.

What is Digg?
