- radison2, on 01/31/2008, -16/+245There is evidence that there will be a new Macbook Pro? Holy S@#! And here I was thinking that they would never release another version ever. I am truly shocked and happy at the same time. Inside scoops like this are why I am on this site!!
- Thayer75, on 01/31/2008, -3/+48I imagine the new macbook pro will have that sweet multi-touch track pad.
Hope Apple releases a Leopard update that will enable multi-touch on older macbook pros. - TheWorm, on 01/31/2008, -3/+39Why are you frustrated with the current lineup? The Macbook Pro's are fine machines.
- atdakore, on 01/31/2008, -5/+34Penryn will make a big difference to power and battery life, and i bet people can't wait for the multi-touch trackpad.
- Centorio, on 01/31/2008, -2/+24I've been holding off on buying a MBP because of this. I hope it's soon, I can't wait much longer!
- KSUdesigner, on 01/31/2008, -2/+20The current hardware already supports multi-touch, ever heard of the two finger scroll? Probably just needs a firmware/software update.
- cawpin, on 01/31/2008, -1/+18I hope you mean blueRAY optical drive option. Bluetooth isn't nearly fast enough for a drive. The keyboards on MBPs are already back lit. The graphics card in the MBPs is one of the better on the market. I don't think you need more than 4GB of RAM on a laptop.
- StuTheMeatMan, on 01/31/2008, -0/+17Someone already made that joke. And don't act like you didn't know it.
- overkilpro, on 01/31/2008, -4/+21if it can sense two fingers im sure it can probably sense 3
- crackedplastic, on 01/31/2008, -3/+18Q: "And could we bring back a smaller MBP? 12 or 13 inches anyone?"
A: "Unless a consumer is interested in a 17 inch laptop, there aren't enough reasons right now to get a MBP over a Macbook." - kiensoy, on 01/31/2008, -1/+16Ubuntu recognizes three-finger clicking on my MacBook.
- cheeseron, on 01/31/2008, -2/+16they'll probably charge you $20 for it
- bigsteve, on 01/31/2008, -0/+11I feel that for you and me and many waiting for a smaller-than-13" mobile workstation from Apple...our ship has sailed with the MB Air. Quite unfortunate I'd say; many people had high hopes for a mini workhorse but got a ditsy supermodel instead.
- jeruvin, on 01/31/2008, -0/+10Are DVI to HDMI cables not good enough?
- championchap, on 01/31/2008, -0/+9Don't be silly, a 9 hour difference is practically a photo finish!
- doctordbx, on 01/31/2008, -1/+8Asus Labs.
- damonic, on 01/31/2008, -2/+9Of course its imminent! What computer company doesn't eventually update its product line?
- Firehed, on 01/31/2008, -1/+8They update their install disks normally - at least the ones that come with systems. It saves their customers the hassle of waiting around for hours for their brand new install to get updated (you know, to not behave like Windows - think of it as slipstreaming service packs)
- katorga, on 01/31/2008, -0/+7There are several benefits, first being you never move your fingers off the pad. I've love the 2-finger + button rightclick because it means my thumb never has to find the second button. Omni-directional scrolling with two fingers from anywhere on the trackpad is sweet too. Adding more gestures would just make it better. I find it much more usable than traditional multibutton trackpads with "scroll zones". YMMV. At the end of the day, all I wanted was a nice, totally hassle-free unix laptop with discrete graphics. Apple is best mobile unix solution out there now (Linux is catching up, but it is very hard to find a laptop with 100% working linux support, especially for suspend/resume functions).
- zioxide, on 01/31/2008, -0/+7Max RAM capacity is going to be the same because the new Penryn chips are still using the same chipset (Crestline) and memory controller.
- inactive, on 01/31/2008, -3/+9Never heard of putting 2 fingers on the trackpad?
- k3nt, on 01/31/2008, -5/+10Unless a consumer is interested in a 17 inch laptop, there aren't enough reasons right now to get a MBP over a Macbook. I suppose the only main thing would persuade me to choose a Pro is the dedicated graphics, but Apple really needs to differentiate these models a little more.
And could we bring back a smaller MBP? 12 or 13 inches anyone? - inactive, on 01/31/2008, -1/+6Pwnt.
- NinjaJoey, on 01/31/2008, -0/+5Yet you bothered to reply.
- vibrokatana, on 01/31/2008, -0/+5Works great on my macbook and I wouldn't ever go back to the scroller on the side, that always got in the way.
- newbill123, on 01/31/2008, -0/+4Apple is pretty good with providing a previous version to current version updater and a combo (multiple version) updater for each architecture. If you're a few versions behind, the Software Update app invisibly picks the right one for you and your Mac gets pushed up to date with as few restarts as possible. The trick is ensuring certain apps that depend on the OS updates are applied in the right order (iTunes, Quicktime, Java, the Software Update app itself).
According to rumor sites, the size of the update coming for 10.5.2 is massive compared to the typical OS X bug fix update. But if you're on 10.5.0, there will be an updater that takes you straight to 10.5.2. You may need to restart a second time based on other updates after that (e.g. graphics drivers, Java, Quicktime, and iTunes DRM). - newbill123, on 01/31/2008, -0/+4Apple updated their retail DVDs at least twice with Tiger. 10.4.3 was put into packages about 6 months after the Tiger debut and 10.4.6 was packaged for retail about 1 year after the debut. This wasn't marketed as "Tiger SP2" or anything; there was just a small footnote on the product saying it was a 10.4.x release for PowerPC only. Pretty subtle, but it would save you significant update time if you had to reinstall from scratch.
- newbill123, on 01/31/2008, -4/+8This article is really about whether seeing an enabler in seeds for the new version of Leopard means we'll see a MacBook Pro refresh soon. But since you asked why I was frustrated with the current line up, I'll bite. I do agree Macs are fine machines, but in the impending refresh I expect:
* the insured value of current MacBook Pros to drop at least $500 overnight.
* the new CPU will be speed competitive to the mobile Penryn's available on Win laptops
* the new Macs will be "greener" than current models (perhaps significantly so)
* the hard disk sizes offered will be bumped up 20-40GB in size
* a high-dpi screen option will be offered for the 15" like the 17" has now
* a bluetooth optical drive option
What might also happen (but I wouldn't be disappointed if not)
* the larger "touch" friendly trackpad
* a backlit keyboard
* a case redesign that makes tv show hosts lick it
* a better mobile graphics card than the one offered now
* larger RAM capacity
* RAM configurations to come down to just 2x-3x the cost of aftermarket upgrades
Ultimately the speed and performance is critical for my needs, and though I'd really love the portable form factor, my accountant will probably make me get a refurbished Mac Pro so the price/value equation is at least somewhat more in line with what I can get it insured for. - fxspec06, on 01/31/2008, -4/+7Next time you post, try not to make it so confusing and hard to read.
THANKS! =D - inactive, on 01/31/2008, -1/+4My dog told me the same. Looks like we better wait.
- insertAliasHere, on 01/31/2008, -0/+3$10 a month for my parents. In an area where the only other option is satellite.
- jeruvin, on 01/31/2008, -0/+3Now that sounds like a pricey machine.
- mrBitch, on 02/01/2008, -0/+3Riiiiight, like the DX10 update that Microsoft will release for XP ?
- Tippis, on 01/31/2008, -0/+3Agreed. Now that they've put the Air out there – especially with the reasoning they gave for why it turned out the size it did – they're *very* unlikely to put out a model that would in any way compete on size with the Air.
- daborg, on 01/31/2008, -1/+4Or, as the article says:
"In many ways, all this does is verify what we have presumed to be true... that MacBook Pro revisions are coming, and soon enough that the Mac OS X 10.5.2 will support them, but it's still somewhat reassuring for those waiting patiently for the new MacBook Pros." - FuzzMop, on 02/01/2008, -1/+4I'd rather pay more for an aesthetically pleasing laptop than a laptop that has bumpy ridges, weighs 18lbs and is 6 inches thick.
- dagamer34, on 01/31/2008, -5/+8HDMI please.
- KibibyteBrain, on 01/31/2008, -0/+3I'm not sure about that. On one hand, the Fox exec at the stevenote a few weeks back praised bluray openly during his talk, but El Jobso basically stated that optical media were obsolete for movies compared to the wonders of iTunes Rentals. And what uses BR for anything other than that market. I know that Steve being a bit hypocritcal wouldn't be anything new...but that just seems like a big reversal.
I also hope they change the keyboard as I really do not like the MBP keyboard...too smooshy, and as a fast typist, I don't feel it offers enough feedback on the stroke. - tatical, on 01/31/2008, -0/+3Not if you want video & audio on the same cable.
- Scape3d, on 01/31/2008, -0/+2I had plans on buying my very first Mac (MacBook Pro 17") this month with my tax return. I'm SO glad I waited. It sounds like the Penryn chip will help battery life/power a lot. That's definitely good news. I've heard that the LED screen will help with battery life too, as well as give a nicer/brighter display. I'm not sure if I'm particularly excited about the multi-touch feature but without having tried it, I'm sure my mind will change.
The other rumor I keep hearing is that the keyboard will be updated. I've heard that it may resemble the MacBook Air's keyboard. I'm not sure I like that. I definitely don't want the keys to be black. I love the silver keyboard the current MBP's have now. Is there anything wrong with the current keyboards? Why would they need to be updated? - Boondoggle, on 01/31/2008, -0/+2What he said!
- Braindead360, on 01/31/2008, -2/+4I finally decided yesterday that I will buy my MacBook Pro today. I'm so sick of waiting, and relying on nothing but rumors. Obviously there will be updates soon, but how soon is soon? Will that be two weeks, four weeks, or more. Bottom line, I need a new machine now for business purposes now, so unless the new revisions are machines with god like abilities, I'm not going to sweat it. Plus, for people that are going total ape ***** over multitouch, keep in mind that this feature is only accessible within OS X based programs. Apple officially stated they have no plans to release development kits that would allow developers to utilize the feature anytime in the near future.
- eatrains, on 01/31/2008, -1/+3It can sense two fingers, but it may not be able to sense where each finger is going relative to the other. You can do a two-finger scroll by moving only one finger and just having another finger touching anywhere on the trackpad.
- StatusQuoRules, on 01/31/2008, -0/+2There are full upgrades and ones for people who already had the latest at the time
- KibibyteBrain, on 01/31/2008, -1/+3People are speculating on whether or not to buy the quite pricy number one ranked non-gaming middle-high end laptop according to many computer periodicals in both the Mac and PC sphere because of signs new upgraded model might come out at the same price, and that alone makes them fanboys? Please. A fanboy, if anything, would try to defend paying into the Apple coffers now.
- inactive, on 01/31/2008, -0/+2Maybe your fingers are too fat?
- digitalpencil, on 01/31/2008, -0/+2Hopefully 5.2 will sort those.. I like mine fine as well but I definitely wouldn't turn down a Penryn/multi-touch rev either!
- simosalminen, on 01/31/2008, -0/+2Here four.. come on Apple, I thought they would have announced the new models @ keynote, how wrong was I :(
I'm starting to think about upgrading my pc and just get eee - bigfinger, on 01/31/2008, -2/+4I been waiting for these to ship for a while, I always try and buy the new release when they first come out to avoid having a $2000 laptop that’s 3 weeks old and obsolete. I would like to at least get 3 months out of it before someone 1ups me, and says "Is that the old one?".
- PetroSan, on 01/31/2008, -0/+2Broadband isn't really that close to being universal. Dial up or satellite [which is often terrible] is still the only option for many people.
