- tibbon, on 12/29/2007, -6/+37Sorry, but this seems to be a big ass Digg-vertisement and little else. I've been a Mac users for about 6 years and I really honestly don't find many of these to be "must have" apps for switchers. I have a small list of maybe 5 apps that I always make sure that my friends install when they switch over, but that list is overkill. Also, just about all of the applications that I have people install are Open Source and "free". Most of these on the list aren't, which makes me think it's a Digg-vertisement.
- xhazerdusx, on 12/29/2007, -0/+18Transmission is a good, open-source bittorrent client also.
- dagamer34, on 12/29/2007, -2/+19Seriosuly, there aren't that many necessary apps. This sounds more like an advertisement than anything else. Here are the apps you actually would USE:
Growl
Adium
MS Office 2008 (wait until Jan 15th to buy)
VMWare Fusion
HandBrake
VLC
Perian
and maybe a bittorrent client (I don't really highly recommend any of them though)
Simple as that. - LucidIguana, on 12/29/2007, -2/+14I couldn't live without Quicksilver.
- DeathAxe, on 12/29/2007, -0/+11BitRocket isn't actively developed and wasn't updated since a long time. Transmission or Azureus is the way to go on Mac.
- mr5150, on 12/29/2007, -5/+1580% of all apps here are purchase ware, why? Who is this person shilling for when for the most part most of those programs have a freeware equivelent.
Burried as an advert for suckers and noobs. - austinnowlin, on 12/29/2007, -1/+9This is extremely off topic. Nobody gives a ***** if you like Windows more than OSX. If you're not interested in this article for Mac users then ***** SKIP OVER IT. IT IS NOT FOR YOU!!!
- dondara, on 12/29/2007, -0/+7Yeah, to make for not having to buy anti-virus crap I guess.
- Dylson, on 12/29/2007, -3/+10Why would I do that? OSX>Linux.
- ItsMyWii, on 12/29/2007, -2/+8VLC runs a lot of the movies that Quicktime screws up after I've downloaded them. I find it very useful.
- LucidIguana, on 12/29/2007, -1/+7Totally disagree. It seems pretty clear to me that you're not a porn download. VLC is the only program I've found that can reliably open anything.
- santaliqueur, on 12/29/2007, -2/+7I moved from Linux to Mac. Used Linux exclusively for two years. Nice stuff, but just too clunky, got tired of fussing with stuff for hours just to get it to work. Nice concept, but I felt OS X had everything I loved about Linux with a big company ironing out all the details for me.
- ItsMyWii, on 12/29/2007, -0/+5Not really must haves, but stuff like Transmission and Handbrake are always nice. NewsFire is also how I got addicted to digg. :)
- SebHughes, on 12/29/2007, -1/+6I was hoping for Free Open Source Programs.
- BlackCow, on 12/29/2007, -2/+7Meh, I'm open to new ideas, let me boot Mac OS X Leopard on PC.... oh... wait...
- DeathAxe, on 12/29/2007, -1/+6You can find the best on http://opensourcemac.org
- fugazied, on 12/29/2007, -0/+4Yeah the free software for Mac is VERY high quality/, for windows I would have to search through hundreds of crappy programs for something good, Mac has an abundance of quality and cheap/free apps.
- stalefries, on 12/30/2007, -0/+4No, you actually need those apps. You just don't know it yet. Trust me, I know better than you do.
- ImWatchingYou, on 12/29/2007, -1/+5It listed parallels and let me tell you, that program is crap compared to VMware Fusion. Same price.
- Madsen, on 12/29/2007, -2/+6No...you can dl all the software you need for free if you go for freeware...The MacOS X platform offers the best and coolest freeware there is...The quality of MacOS X freeware is way higher than Win freeware. I use both platforms by the way...
Free/Cheap and essential MacOS X software: http://madsenblog.dk/?page_id=11 - maexus, on 12/29/2007, -0/+4Generally there isn't a need for redundant freeware on OSX. As Madsen said, the freeware and the 3rd party software in general for OSX is high quality.
- spargett, on 12/30/2007, -0/+4VIva la Transmission!@#
- overkilpro, on 12/30/2007, -0/+4am i the only one that likes the transparent bar?
- gjscds, on 12/29/2007, -3/+6Ok--Yeah. Linux is great choice for my wife or parents.
- seantubridy, on 12/30/2007, -0/+3Yeah, paying people for their time, expertise and useful products is for suckers. Everything should be free, right?
- rstarr, on 12/29/2007, -1/+4No Shiira love for the browsers?
I mean I know it's buggier then week old pork, but it's a great example of how a browser should look and work (hypothetically). - happyseamonster, on 12/29/2007, -0/+3At least Perian and should be mentioned...
- selkie, on 12/30/2007, -0/+3If you mirror your primary drive you'll want to mirror it to a drive formatted with HFS+ (the filesystem used by OS X), the reason being that things like resource forks and other metadata will not be preserved by moving it to FAT32. Also, if you do keep it HFS+ you can actually use that backup as a bootable backup, so if your main hard disk gets toasted, you can just plug in your external drive and boot straight into your operating system. I would recommend you use Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner. I don't think that Super Duper has been updated for Leopard yet.
If you are using Leopard then you already have Time Machine built in, you can check out the demo at Apple.com. I've been a registered Super Duper user for ages but I've switched over to Time Machine.
To handle your concerns about accessing the files through Windows, you can use MacDrive (very useful) to access HFS+ disks from Windows. I have my Macbook Pro running Vista Premium as well as Leopard and Macdrive works great for the rare occasions I have to boot Vista.
If you still want to go only FAT32, you can essentially just have any of the programs just backup your home directory, that should be all you really need (your documents, pictures etc). However, I would strongly urge you to go with an HFS+ solution, the advantages are far greater.
Congratulations on your switch, you've made a smart move. - Chirp08, on 12/29/2007, -0/+3BBEdit should be on the web development list. Awesome program when combined with transmit for editing code.
- LilyFoxglove, on 12/30/2007, -0/+3No, you aren't.
The bar looks fine, even good with the right sort of background image. - thewump, on 12/29/2007, -1/+4I truly like the Mac.. I have an old one to dock my iPhone to, but having ditched Windows for Linux, and loving it, looking at a list that has "$" signs in it.. really - after a year or so of linux the idea of paying for software is a shock. Still - I DO persuade every one who asks my advice to switch to a mac so I appreciate the article. Mac users are the LEAST likely to call me for help.
- inactive, on 12/30/2007, -0/+3I have been using Macs for years, and still found some great new apps in this article. Big thanks to the author!
- AlphaMack, on 09/26/2008, -2/+5http://www.opensourcemac.org/ FTW.
- Falldog, on 12/30/2007, -0/+3I just bought my first Mac a few weeks ago and the first big application I downloaded for it was Aperture. As a photographer I was really looking for a new organization and simple editing tool from my mac, and it has not disappointed. It runs great and has a great interface. Much better than Lightroom which I was using for a while.
- Jak08, on 12/30/2007, -0/+3Darn right it is like a cult, and most of us like it that way :)
- maexus, on 12/29/2007, -2/+5I hate supporting developers too. What do they every do for us?
- happyseamonster, on 12/29/2007, -1/+4much?
- knightboat, on 12/30/2007, -1/+4I've never loved a Digg comment as much as I love this one.
Comment sections in Digg Apple articles are awful to sort through just because of the constant pointless anti-Apple ***** that gets in between the helpful, on-topic posts. Who knows why so many people feel so passionately negative about Apple and its users, but I'm ***** tired of dealing with their insecurities. - Madsen, on 12/29/2007, -1/+4Ehhh...You know you can run MacOS X, Linux AND Windows on the new macs right?! Freeware on MacOS X is nothing compared to freeware for windows...the quality is way higher for MacOS X freeware apps. I use both platforms by the way...
- Karmavs, on 12/30/2007, -0/+3I like it too… It's a vast improvement over the Tiger one (though i wish it blurred the background a little more)

- ethanfortes, on 12/29/2007, -8/+10So once you buy you're Mac for $1000+, you can spend exactly $2000 on all these Essential Mac Apps!
- PommyBrit, on 12/30/2007, -0/+2Does Perian work with leopard?
- thewump, on 12/29/2007, -2/+4Yeah.. it sucks to have an OS that you want to tell other people about. I yearn for the day when I was a Microsoft user because when OS discussions came up I just didn't participate.. I wasn't going to recommend it, so why let people know that my business was built on a steaming big pile of *****.
- stalefries, on 12/30/2007, -0/+2vi!

- Slashriffs, on 12/29/2007, -2/+4What happens when you have an external monitor and you wanna watch something on both screens at once?
Thats where VLC comes in. - spargett, on 12/30/2007, -1/+3You obviously don't shoot RAW or hi-volume shoots. For professional photographers Aperture really does revolutionize digital raw workflow. I used to dread all the post waiting for me after a shoot. Apple took the original process for batch processing and turned it on its head. Aperture has literally given me back hundreds of hours of my life.
I would say that its not for the average consumer. That dabbles in photography. You have remember that its a pro app. So don't get frustrated when you want to poke around a few photos and feel its taking up too many resources to do so. For that there is iPhoto, etc. - happyseamonster, on 12/29/2007, -1/+3Tibbon, share!
