- antron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+66How 'bout the electronic whine from messages boards?
- captaindan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+47It's good to see that the Apple product life cycle (as documented by MisterBG) is following its course. We are now at this phase of the cycle:
"A minor, rarely occurring flaw in the device begins to be discussed in the Apple support forums. Whiny, artistic types post lengthy diatribes about how this terrible design flaw has made the device unusable and scarred them emotionally. Electronic petitions are created demanding that Apple replace the devices for free, plus pay for counseling to help traumatized users overcome their emotional distress."

- baconfreak, on 10/12/2007, -11/+42i just bought a brand new MacBook Pro 2.0GHz less than a week ago and the buzzing noise that I am experiencing sometimes is definitely not related to the power/screen inverter. also, the buzzing stops when the iSight built-in camera is turned on or the second core in the processor is turned off. pretty fishy! waiting for apple to make a statement and come up with a fix, because a noise like this is unacceptable on a $2500 computer.
- Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -20/+49Um, an apple user b*tched me out because my non-Apple computer had a fan that got real loud.
- betasp, on 10/12/2007, -12/+37Serious issue = power supply catches fire, motherboard failures, etc.
Serious issue != annoying little sound - Godric, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23Hey MacBook Pro users, thanks for Beta-Testing the new hardware. I expect my Revision B will be nearly perfect. Thanks again.
- YouKnowWho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Here's a YouTube video showcasing the phenomenon:

But look, Computers have problems. It doesn't matter if it's Dell, Gateway, Toshiba, or even, believe it or not, Apple. When you choose your platform, no matter which one you choose, you're going to end up with problems of some kind. - snowdog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18They have killed the whole forum LOL!
"We're sorry, Apple Discussions are temporarily unavailable. The system should be back on-line soon. " - charged2885, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21This needs more attention. I bought a new Mac Book Pro for $2k and it produces a headache enducing whine. After my experiences with apple's tech support along with not officially acknowledging this problem has me seeing apple less as a kick ass company and more like a faceless corporation.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I have a Macbook Pro, and have experienced the whining noise. After reading through the linked thread, I installed the mirror widget, added it to the dashboard, and after running it, removed it from the dashboard. The whine is gone and has not returned.
- Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15(golf clap)
- NineTailedFox, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Any day now, Google will announce the launch of google.mac, a new search engine which will omit results for searches on controversial terms such as "electronic whine" or "macintel vista". Human rights groups will be enraged.

Apple killed the thread maybe? - Iriel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15It may not seem like a serious issue to many people, but when people are paying anywhere from $1,999 to more than $2,499 for a powered up modified model, one would expect a nearly flawless computer from a computer that touts itselfs for premium quality.
And while I don't have a MacBook yet, this is actually pretty good to know because computers make noise, but there are some noises that just don't seem natural. When this kind of thing happens on a laptop, the diagnosis and repair can be all the more difficult rather than just opening your tower and adjusting your components. Not the least of which this : On a laptop, no error is a small error. - center15, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I have a Sony Vaio FE11H with the Intel Core Duo I also have a whine with seems to be louder when the screen brightness is turned down
- crimson117, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16If it's that bad, return it. Buy another once a better revision comes out.
- _skin_, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Mine has it... And I hate it so much. But I am not taking it in until they admit there is a problem.
- x0923, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19apple really needs to take some action on this officially, so many people for at least 3 weeks have been telling them about it and they still; tell people they dont have any idea /and/or they are hearing things
is just the right thing to do
MORE PEOPLE NEED TO BE MADE AWARE
no artist wants his canvas to be humming its own tune.
apple has placed mine 2 times already and i still have the whine, they fixed the lcd noise tho. - bumfilter, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Yup, Apple has killed the thread!
- apjoseph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The page has actually been removed off the forum.
UPDATE : The forum seems to be completely down ! - Dan_2gngCrew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8One of the guys posted a wav on the forum. I will agree that it is pretty annoying high pitched whining. I have posted a torrent of it on my tracker in mp3 format, so that the guys bandwidth doesn't get hosed.
Here's the link:

Also, anyone got and clues at to why this software widget stops the hardware from producing sounds?? - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12It seems that Apple thinks this was so uncommon that they removed the referenced web page. Nothing like burying something you don't like. But then again that seems to be an Apple practice.
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9If you don't like what they are saying bury it. It's the Apple way.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Since replies only seem to go one level down, I'm replying here to answer the person who wanted to know what the Mirror widget does. Its just a dashboard widget that activates the laptop's built-in iSight camera and mirrors the image. There's nothing special about it whatsoever. For whatever reason however, activating the isight seems to quiet the whine.
It is interesting though, launching photo booth does the same thing (its an app that comes with the laptop and applies goofy effects to pictures you take via iSight), however when you close photo booth the whine comes back, while removing the dashboard widget doesnt make the sound come back. There might be a difference in some cleanup code... the iSight doesnt remain active when you remove the mirror widget, so its not that. - inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I didn't hear the noise for the first week or two.. Then this morning I opened up my macbook pro (while on battery mode) to check digg and there it is. Very annoying. I opened photobooth, which for some reason the iSight isn't working (no picture shows) but, immediately the sound stops. It's got to be the stepping in the processor when this machine is running on battery. I'm going to see if i can install Apple's CHUD tools and recreate the sound on purpose. My guess is it's the stepping of the processors, and could be controlled by software. For now simply run "photobooth" the isight running keeps the processors for stepping down too much.. PS... It's also VERY VERY LOUD. loud enough to be embarrasing in a classroom full of people over the teacher.
- MrUnderbridge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Well, there have been problems like this *every time* they introduce a new model of any kind. Something is wrong with it, they don't admit it, people get pissed, then they grudgingly admit it. ***** iBook logic boards and scratch-prone Nanos come to mind, but are hardly an exhaustive list.
In general, people should know by now the following: Never EVER buy anything from Apple within 3-6 months of its release. By then, you'll know whether a certain line is a lemon to be avoided, or the kinks will have been worked out. - Furious, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Yeah the other day I was walking through the park and some PC user had this laptop with a fan. Dude I just walked up to him and told him I was an Apple user and then started bitc*ing him out for having a loud fan.
- NineTailedFox, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11"He currently uses a Dual 2.0GHz PowerMac G5 and a 12" PowerBook G4. In spite of his loyalty to the platform, he finds most "Mac people" to be tiresome and annoying."
(from http://www.misterbg.org/AppleProductCycle/ )
My kinda guy.
(But not like that.) - betasp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Why do you keep buying them?
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This video clarify things... that sound is truly annoying!
- ApplePenguin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8My PowerBook makes this noise. It's transistors in the power supply. My girlfriend's tablet PC does the same thing.
- jujubear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I got my MacBook about a week ago and noticed the noise a couple of days ago. I just got off the phone with AppleCare and after about 36 minutes of explaining the problems (there seems to be one whine from the CPU when both cores are enabled and they're under very little load and another, kinda a buzz when the screen brightness is anything other than full/off) and resetting the PRAM, I got transferred over to someone and my MacBook is being picked up for repair. IIRC the guy said the screen noise was probably an issue with the display inverter, although I'm not sure what they're going to do about the whine which appears to be due to the CPU.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I haven't the slightest clue, to be honest. It seems odd, but it works. Others have mentioned running Photo Booth, and the common denominator there is activating the iSight. One more thing I will say is that before I got rid of the noise by installing and removing the mirror widget, the noise was louder when the laptop was plugged in than when running on battery power, suggesting a relationship with the power supply or the power being supplied to particular hardware controlled via software....
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Hmm, never buy the first of any new product. Always, wait until the minor (or major) issues are fixed. This applies to Microsoft and Apple.
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Maybe having a bad RAM slot is an indication on the fix to the whine. It's not a problem it's a new feature iWhine.
- Yetidude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I have a stock 2.0 ghz and I DO NOT have the noise. I have essentially no noise except for the occasional soft sound of the fan. If these people are experience the kind of noise that is capable of irritating a rational human being, then Apple needs to fix their computers. My MacBook Pro is the best computer I've ever used and for someone to shell out 2500 bones for a defective computer is just not right. Time for Apple to prove how awesome they are and issue some kind of fix for this.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5404 error now. :(
- umrgregg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"I have a Macbook Pro, and have experienced the whining noise. After reading through the linked thread, I installed the mirror widget, added it to the dashboard, and after running it, removed it from the dashboard. The whine is gone and has not returned."
So does this mirror widget box you in the ears? Does it kick the ol' bat out of the house? How does this work? - DJFMA, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Come on Apple... why kill the thread? This isn't something that should be brushed under the carpet.
- suppazone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6yeah seems like it...
- Beanlover, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12All that extra money is what's known as the "Sucker Tax".
- ZapWizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's just the "Intel inside" sound.
It is probably just the coils for the power regulators. Try dimming a flourecent light, you get the same effect. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10I remember the early days when Apple used to brag about not needing a fan... :)
http://www.gfx.com - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10I....am trying.... to write reply.......must concentrate.... over..... my PowerBook's noisey fan....
- nilobject, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Because, you know, it's not like the support site is being flooded with thousands of people from digg or anything.
Get off the soapbox. You people always come up with conspiracy theories about Apple. God. It's annoying. - mccarron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5There are a couple of different noises, which are easily resolved. One in particular seems to be tied to the processor running at idle, use more CPU and it goes away. Another one is related to the brightness level of the LCD. I only digg this story to bring more attention to it so maybe Apple will finally say something about the issue.
- silent1, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12I have an MBP with one of the three identifiably *separate* noises. This one is a very high-pitched, VERY LOUD at times, very ANNOYING noise. This gives me headaches. It's more than just typical computer noise (I've got nearly two decades in the "computer business" -- I know better). Interesting thing is, if I apply just a very little bit of pressure to the rubber part of the screen hinge, the noise goes away for a few minutes. I'm half tempted to try removing the rubber part and seeing if rearranging the wires a bit will kill the noise (without killing the laptop).
My PowerBook did *NOT* have this issue. It *did* have the processor noise part during certain operations, but that was quite bearable. -
