- Dalrek, on 10/10/2007, -8/+91"Even little children are able to use Macs. A kid can open up 'Johnny's folder,' and there are Johnny's little docs and applications." Because with Windows, kids have to learn to do a quadruple back-flip through seventeen rings of fire to accomplish the same task?
- baltwade, on 10/10/2007, -14/+81"Macs last longer . . . I was fortunate if I could get 12 or 13 months out of a Windows PC"
What the hell are you doing? I worked for a small engineering company that still had some 386 DOS machines. PCs last forever. Sure they become obsolete, but it will always run as long as you need it to. - ChrisRX, on 10/10/2007, -24/+74I would've expected someone to say this already but ............what about linux? I mean why pay for many licensing fees why you can get your OS and software for free.
Some of these points are really just plucked out of thin air. They say that even their "cheap" macs are built with higher quality parts than a normal cheap pc. Last time I checked, my cheapo laptop was running the same graphics/sound/network chip as a macbook.
Macs last longer? Yeah right, until they're out of warranty and then .........
But the one I really didn't get was "Mac users are more productive workers" Ok I really don't understand this one. Can you not draw single pixels on windows pcs? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -48/+78Mac OS the most cost effective? Yeah right. Firstly you have to buy a Mac, which alone starts around $1800 for a halfway decent machine. You can get a PC powerhouse for about $800 minus OS. Then choose Linux or Windows. Windows, add $200. Whoopee. The biggest difference here is that Linux and Windows can run on just about anything, Mac OS cannot and therefore, you are forced to purchase Apple computers. Lame.
- ThinkFr33ly, on 10/10/2007, -14/+43Wow. What a completely ridiculous article.
I have an idea. Let's write an article that vomits up all sorts of assertions supported by anecdotal evidence (from 1 person, nonetheless), include a couple of statements that may have been valid 10 years ago, and throw in a study about productivity which confusing correlation with causation.
Sound good? Good. - Damhna, on 10/10/2007, -5/+33Oh No , which link should I click on first ?
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/3971/85852331sz1.jpg - Dumbledorito, on 10/10/2007, -4/+29I just replaced a windows machine with another windows machine. The previous model's BIOS had a copyright date of 2001.
I'm not sure what the author is smoking. Maybe he thinks you have a new computer when you swap out a new graphics card or something.... - timusca, on 10/10/2007, -4/+28I love Macs. But I'm burying this for having to click through 5 pages and for not knowing a Mac mini costs $600, not $500 like it used to.
- Drealoth, on 10/10/2007, -3/+27We are truly a blessed civilization, with not one but three operating systems (Windows, *nix, OS X) that are the "most cost effective operating system of all."
- szembek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23How exactly do you measure your productivity?
- VSack, on 10/10/2007, -12/+34Let's see if I can convince my boss based on this article that his home iMac didn't just crash.
Let's see if this will bring back the 60 days of data that was NOT backed up because the software that accompanied his external hard drive stopped working three weeks after he installed it.
Let's see if I can be convinced that the Seagate hard drive we pulled out of this Core2Duo machine is ANY DIFFERENT than the one I pulled from my IT backstock and installed in another computer this morning.
Let's see how much OnTrack cares about how different the false ROI stated in this article matters to recovering the pictures from Europe my boss lost...or the pics from his kids' first birthday.
Stop worshipping these companies that you BUY from and start realizing that we need to hold them all accountable. Its one thing to like a product. Its another thing to evangelize for these companies and blindly accept any crap that they give us and claiming that its revolutionary.
Disclaimer: I am only pointing out that no computer from any company is infallible. The issues with my bosses computer could have happened on any OEM or custom hardware, and it is the responsibility of the user to maintain data integrity. - rationalist, on 10/10/2007, -20/+42When I finally switched to a Mac after 20 years on PCs, from DOS to XP - during which, for the last decade plus, I pooh-poohed Mac "fanatics" and insisted that "a computer is a computer and they all suck", I actually measured my productivity.
It has increased a whopping 30% since I switched to a Mac.
Just anecdotal, but, it surprised even me.
Also anecdotal: it was the ability to run the Windows programs I had a large investment in that finally convinced me to buy a MacBook. Guess what? After a few months of noodling around, first in BootCamp and later in Parallels, I haven't used a Windows app since. - roxya, on 10/10/2007, -4/+25====
Macs last longer
Users also concur about the Mac's relative longevity. Hall, for example, is still using the same Mac G4 system he purchased six years ago, although he's since bought two more Macs for use in his real estate practice.
"Before that, I was fortunate if I could get 12 or 13 months out of a Windows PC. It usually got corrupted long before that," he explains.
====
Fortunate for a Windows PC to last 12/13 months? Corrupted long before? What the...........?? - Hosalabad, on 10/10/2007, -7/+27An iSeries server for Domino? What a waste of money.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+27There are more games on linux than mac as it stands.
- DoodleMaster, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22lies
- Sparkster185, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21He actually said "Linux and Windows can run *on* just about anything". Comprehension FTW.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/10/2007, -5/+22My PC is going on 6 years. Though I plan on getting a new one with vista.
- OUPablo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19apparently you've never opened up the Start menu in windows. It can be a pretty daunting task.
- DoodleMaster, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18why is it always Littlle johnny or billy?
- pr1me4, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Should be titled: Eight Financial Reasons Why the Company You Own Should Use Mac OS
- Killerah, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14That was the most non-sarcastic looking sarcasm I've seen in quite some time.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14You got a problem with Billy?
- Barr08, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16That doesn't make any sense. Oh, and the old "macs only use one button" thing is defunct and archaic.
- Fratz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I actually have a 90MHz Pentium (no FVDIV bug) that still runs but is too old to be of any practical use. It's 13 years old at this point. If you keep your system properly cooled and don't drop it, there's no reason to assume it won't live long enough to become obsolete.
- VeritasAequitas, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15I am a mac fanatic, but this guy is a freakin idiot. He is just making mac users look bad by being arrogant and not having solid facts.
- rderveloy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15Yes, but can you easily upgrade the ram, hard drive, processor, or video card in an iMac after you purchase it? No, you can't. To me, that's worth a whole lot more than $200.
Besides, most PC manufacturers include monitors either for free or heavily discounted these days. If the monitor breaks, you just swap it out for another one. If the screen on the iMac breaks, you have a paperweight. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -15/+26Because Macs are designed to look like a shiny little Fisher Price toy for people who have no clue how to navigate an OS.
- Speed, on 10/10/2007, -12/+23Of course you're more productive, you can't run that many games or anything on MacOS...
- DoodleMaster, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13i'm afraid of change though...and Steve jobs...What do you think he hides under his turtle neck...yea....I went there.
- delhokie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11All macs come with a 2-button mouse (well, it works like one); and if you don't like it, you can use your old windows one or get a new one. That's about as bad as saying that you like Windows over OSX because the close window button is in the opposite corner of the window.
- alliekins619, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I still have a 75Mhz Pentium machine, giant 15-in CRT, running on its original DOS/Win95 install. I use it to play my favorite late 80's / early 90's games like Doom, Oregon Trail, SkiFree, and SimCity2000. 15 years and still running. If your machine only lasts a year YOU ARE PROBABLY DOING IT WRONG, plain and simple.
- rationalist, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14Productivity is not a measure of what tasks are possible, it is a measure of how much actual productive work gets done in a fixed amount of time.
- nrgamble, on 10/10/2007, -23/+31"Mac users are more productive workers"
It's pompous statements like that one that make people view Mac users as arrogant elitists.
It's not the computer...it's more the person. The computer is merely a tool...not a personality altering machine.
And maybe the reason "Mac users are more productive" is because they have no games or 3rd party apps to distract them...which brings me to the #9 financial reason why we should use Macs...
9. Lack of 3rd party apps and games means you can keep using your "productive" pre-installed Mac apps because there is almost nothing else out there for you. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11We have a FreeNAS server here in the office for internal storage, an old Dell Inspiron that I got in late 99. It ran XP from XP launch to just a few months ago when it was wiped and prepped for server use. Runs just like the day I unboxed it. Never really had a problem with Windows, it crashed maybe 4 or 5 times in 7 years. This guy is just a shill.
- mortigon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Johnny does
- brennankeller, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9no, that upsurge would be related to the iMac... released in 1998
- BlackCow, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12See now I find this stunning. I use windows vista, and sometimes Linux for coding, for all my photoshop/web work. Somehow magically buying an apple computer made you MORE productive? Does OSX somehow run photoshop differently? Personally I can't use apple for the fact that 3D Studio Max dosn't work on OSX and I like to build computers and play games. Maybe thats what made you more productive, the lack of games, but thats your fault not the OS.
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8um, what?
- OUPablo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7your were afraid your computer had AIDS?
- staffrocket, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9*looks for bullet points* =(
- miniboss, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Where's the test market that backs up these claims? Increased productivity? Longer lasting hardware despite it being identical to Win boxes? And if any company would go through the gigantic trouble of moving from Windows to another OS then Linux clearly is the best choice. It's cheaper, it's more conducive to the pure-work atmosphere and if you're going to force some old lady to learn a non-windows OS then it will be just as easy/difficult as teaching Mac.
BTW. I'm a Mac user so I can see how some people may prefer Macs in my home life but when they're at work then most average office workers could care less what OS is running the 2 apps they use all day. - JimmyTheClam, on 10/10/2007, -22/+29I can run Windows on almost anything.
I can run Linux on everything.
I can only run OSX on a Mac that rips me off on the hardware costs.
If OSX really is that much better, why won't they allow me to run it on my PC, that if I had to buy an equivalent Apple Box I would have to spend $8,000?
I spent less than $1,800 for my PC that I put together myself.
Out of all of the arguments for owning a Mac (and their are some) making a financial argument is just as insane as it it disingenuous.
DIE FANBOYS DIE! - Arramol, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9"Don't have to buy anti-viral, anti-adware, or anti spyware."
Anti-viral - Avira AntiVir, AVG, Avast, etc. - free
Anti-adware/spyware - Ad-Aware 2007, Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware Blaster, etc. - free - joebob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7With 'reasons' like these, Ill take the ranting of your average hobo in rebuttal.
"Users also concur about the Mac's relative longevity. Hall, for example, is still using the same Mac G4 system he purchased six years ago, although he's since bought two more Macs for use in his real estate practice.
"Before that, I was fortunate if I could get 12 or 13 months out of a Windows PC. It usually got corrupted long before that," he explains." - HerrSchnuff, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Idiot, they come with a four button mouse
- Speed, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Where I work (grocery store) our tills run on an MS-DOS compliant system, the store server has a 5.25" floppy drive in it. Runs perfectly fine (most of the time).
- fatnutz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10I'm reasonably sure that 90% of you are full of *****,
- Misfitpierce, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Actually linux is most cost effective... Lightest on hardware with most app's open and FREE
- miniboss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Why do Mac defenders constantly pretend they are retarded when they clearly are just as intelligent as everyone else. "Windows is confusing", "I have to careful which pop-up ads I click on or I'll get spyware", "On windows I can't safely open .exe files from anonymous strangers selling viagra", "OS X just works, unlike windows which also works but I knew some guy in Idaho who opened his computer and ghosts started beating up his dog".
C'mon. If you can find the applications folder, avoid giving out your social security number to strangers or figure out how to right-click then you are definitely competant enough to steer clear of the things that make Windows a vulnarable OS. To pretend that you are completely incapable of doing certain annoying tasks only makes you look like a fool and makes the Mac community look like jerks. -
