According to the Lmao-O-tron 3000, this is very close to a guaranteed-front-page submission in 2008. - chris9902, on 01/17/2008, -10/+41knowing Apple it will cost $400 then you'll need to wait 3 months and pay an extra $20 for the textures.
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -0/+25This game has looked really cool for the last 3 years...
- jasonlfunk, on 01/17/2008, -1/+24Now they just need to release the PC version.
- colincornaby, on 01/17/2008, -0/+12Um, Apple won't be releasing this, EA will be releasing this for Mac. But I could imagine EA doing the same thing.
- dotlizard, on 01/17/2008, -6/+18from the comments: ...The surging Mac popularity and EA's 2007 announcement means Mac gaming is coming out of "a long dark tunnel".
let's hope that's true! - dukeeeey, on 01/17/2008, -2/+11if game developers used openGL + openAL then porting would be a peice of cake for most games
- homer4199, on 01/17/2008, -0/+7Great news! Best game to run on a mac since starcraft.
- stereoa, on 01/17/2008, -1/+8That's exactly what I'm thinking. Who cares about how many systems it is on? I CAN'T PLAY IT.
- mooninite, on 01/17/2008, -1/+7Epic Games and id Software seem to be doing just fine with OpenGL development. You are just highly over exaggerating the problem. Is it because you have no idea how game development works? You heard about something on some web forum and now you know everything?
- aliguana, on 01/17/2008, -1/+7once the Mac starts filling up with games, Mac users will start demanding better gfx hardware than Apple currently force them to use. They will demand modded machines with 5 fans and supercharged busses. Then Apple will say "no" and game development will stall again.
Hope Apple sees that the games market is HUGE and starts accomodating its users instead of holding them back. - gameradam, on 01/17/2008, -0/+6yes we're well aware Spore is by the same creator of The Sims. Will Wright.
- aladrin, on 01/17/2008, -2/+8Hey now, be fair. It'll come with some textures, it's just the new ones that will cost $20.
- mooninite, on 01/17/2008, -1/+6Completely ignorant comment. I sure hope you are being sarcastic.
OpenGL 2.1 was already feature-ahead of DirectX 9. Completely open spec. It's actually *not* hard to program for.
OpenGL 3.0 adds features found in DirectX 10. - inactive, on 01/17/2008, -8/+13Funny how Mac enthusiasts always debate about Macs having tons of games available for the system, but when one upcoming game announces it plans on having a Mac version, it's front-page news on Digg.
- jaybol, on 01/17/2008, -0/+4oh i remember many hours spent on the original simcity and simants...the ants one was great
- compujunkie, on 01/17/2008, -0/+4....good grief, just release the damn game already, geesh!
- missingnoh4x, on 01/17/2008, -0/+4EA, Linux version plz? Kthnxbai.
- luchid, on 01/17/2008, -1/+5"opengl sucks and directx is so much better."
Why is that? Care to enlighten us? - inactive, on 01/17/2008, -3/+7What, nothing about the MacBook Air? This is an outrage!
- 35263526, on 01/17/2008, -3/+7While theoretically OpenGL's development model should lead to a more stable and well-rounded toolset, it actually turns out that's not what people want; 's all about the shiny. DirectX exposes more functionality to game developers because Microsoft haphazardly just takes a GPU-manufacturer wishlist and implements it. It doesn't help that the lack of widespread OpenGL use relegates its driver support to a second-class position because those same GPU manufacturers leave the work to smaller numbers of people than DirectX. It's a vicious cycle, really.
That doesn't mean OpenGL & Friends can't be used to make stunning games (see UT3/ET:QW), but DirectX makes it a lot easier for developers to get nice graphics and the combined libraries saves them a lot of time. - SamuelHenderson, on 01/17/2008, -0/+4What's the difference if they turn around and sell the engines they made? The games still look great AND are made using OpenGL.
- dyefade, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2007/oct/26/w ...
OK, maybe it is on Wii? Or does that just mean he's looking into it? - keraneuology, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4Yay! I'll be able to go to gamestop and buy Spore, MacSpore and Duke Nukem Forever all on the same day!
- TheRealToma, on 01/17/2008, -2/+5PC version means that it'll run on linux?
:(
Better hope Cider/Transgaming will send this stuff upsteam to Wine. - aliguana, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3shouldn't that be: the ONLY game on the Mac since Starcraft? *hides*
Seriiously though, its good that developers are starting to pay attention to the Mac. Long overdue. - troydoogle7, on 01/17/2008, -6/+9yes but the problem is that opengl sucks and directx is so much better. It will take a lot of money and time to bring open gl up to directx 9... forget directx 10!
As an ubuntu fan, having games on open gl would be awesome. - retral, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3Yesterday's news, today!
- aladrin, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3It's planned to be on every other console known to man, including handhelds. Why would you think it won't be on the Wii?
- MioTheGreat, on 01/17/2008, -2/+5I bet it'll look better at 15.4" 1920x1200 on my HP laptop.
- SteveMax, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3It's a sad day when the best introduction someone can give to Will Wright is "The Sims creator"...
- jonr, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2I would be happy to get Spore for any platform...
- colincornaby, on 01/17/2008, -7/+9We digg articles like this up so that you PC enthusiasts will stop giving us crap about the Mac not having any games.
- scuczu, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3So the boot camp partition i installed two years ago in hopes of installing Spore on will be obsolete.
Thanks for the news now I guess.... - JasonCox, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3Dugg because I thought you guys say they shelved Spore a few months ago so it's good to see that it's still alive.
- veilrap, on 01/17/2008, -2/+4No
- UU7a, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2I wonder how much nasty copy protection they shove into this.
- they, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3http://digg.com/apple/Coming_to_the_Mac_in_2008_Sp ...
- radink360, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2how many times is this story going to hit the front page of digg? This is like the 3rd time.
- gds923, on 01/17/2008, -2/+4Hooray!!
- MioTheGreat, on 01/17/2008, -2/+4Then you were doing it wrong.
- Memitim, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Gamers.
- DaleoftheUK, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2I'll just put the dvd for this game in my new macbook air....oh *****. Right then where my old pc so I can load up a disc using it, actually I'll just get the PC version then.
- srg13, on 01/17/2008, -4/+6Too bad it's not actually a native port... But I suppose it's something
- troydoogle7, on 02/09/2008, -0/+1said in one and explained so eloquently..... I guess I should have qualified the statement more!
- corser, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I know this is months old and no one will ever see this unless they go through their history like me but...
The MIT license is more free, but it's not more open. As an author/programmer, you can do a lot more things with code licensed under the MIT license, including no obligation to release source code for products derived from the code. LGPL is more open, any changes you make to the code must be included (or made available) along with binary distributions. At least that's how I see it.
The Wine project didn't like that their hard work was being used as a jumping point for a company to create a commercial product and not contribute back to the community that made it possible. Possibly because they had commercial plans, or whatever. - Bobbler, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1What are you? Retarded?
I am counteracting the claim that somehow sticking a frigging apple logo on it doesn't make it any faster than the same equivalent hardware spec of a PC.
Hardly jealous of your e-penis size. - xkrwlng, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1everything EA touches, turns to ash.
- NoOneButMe, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1UT2k4?
- AvidPreatorian, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Mac OSX is more efficient with that hardware kiddo. Look up performance tests on CNET, get back to me.
