- ElectricSoup, on 10/10/2007, -21/+124"DrunkenBatman goes on racist tirade"
Why should I believe this? There is absolutely no evidence offered here. I can see is a slide that says "Black People Don't Use Macs".
It doesn't say "Black People _Shouldn't_ Use Macs". It merely asserts that they don't. Maybe they do, and maybe they don't ... and if they don't, or if Drunken Batman thinks they don't -- if, indeed, this is his slide -- maybe he'd _like_ them to.
In short, where's the racist tirade? Nowhere. It's asserted but no evidence of it is offered.
I recall his blog. He was often entertaining as a blogger. There was never any racism in the blog. Maybe this is a vendetta against the man. For example, he did expose copyright violation of some open source software. I imagine there are people who'd like to damage his reputation for that. So offer some proof. - tuxidomasx, on 10/10/2007, -4/+46i'm black
and I use macs.
Its amazing what some people will say to try to get a laugh out of people. Its not that it's particularly offensive...it's just rude and inappropriate in that setting. - AmazingSyco, on 10/10/2007, -1/+42Kind of like how the entire United States news media took a three month break to talk about who was getting Anna Nicole Smith's money?
- carbon12, on 10/10/2007, -3/+41Posted in the Flickr comment section:
"What that picture can't show is that after the slide went up, Drunkenbatman went on to say that "the only black people he's seen at MacWorld were outside begging for change." He says this with a black developer in the room and this was apparently not enough to stop this part of the conference."
Can anyone else that went to the conference confirm this actually happened? - futureisours, on 10/10/2007, -12/+48Big deal. People are so uptight these days.
- sp1keNARF, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36I have an ipod, a macbook, and sitting right behind me is a g5 server. so yea. we use macs.
- ryanmetcalf, on 10/10/2007, -1/+33Who is DrunkenBatman?
- MrClownn, on 10/10/2007, -2/+331 slide + 1 comment != "racist tirade"
It wasn't appropriate, but the title / description made me think it was the second coming of Michael Richards. Buried for sensationalist headline. - TheCaterpillar, on 10/10/2007, -4/+32Am I the only person who saw "Drunken Batman" and thought... "Drunken Batman"?
Buried as Inaccurate - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+29Why do people get pissed at this, but when there is a question at a democratic debate To Senator Obama "Do you think your BLACK ENOUGH" dosen't piss people off.
What a stupid effing question. Ohh and if the MSM can stereotype why can't a drunken batman ;) - emptybucket, on 10/10/2007, -9/+31stereotyping is not racism.
- gharding, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22The only Zune I've ever seen in public was owned by a black guy. True story.
- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -11/+32Every recording studio these days has a Mac and Pro Tools. All the "pimps" and "gangstas" you see claiming to be from the "hood" use Macs and listen to their demos on iPods.
- sdcarter, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19I just love this comment:
schwatoo Pro User says:
"there was much booing and gnashing of teeth. And then we bitched about it over pizza" - geoffpado, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Yeah, it did. I was there.
- hydroplane, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Now thats a headline
- brianamerige, on 10/10/2007, -11/+23Not the right venue for that type of "comedy."
- zwilliams, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I gotta call ***** on that claim. I'm half-black and I've used Apple machines since Apple IIe. My father is black and he uses only Macs and always has.
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12yeah, I have no idea what they are talking about either.
- ncc74656m, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Actually, that question was brought on by a couple black community "leaders" (read: fear/hate-mongers using the exploitation of the African American community to their own gain) who said they felt Obama wasn't "black enough." I don't recall who said this exactly, but they said their justification was "He wasn't the descendant of slaves, so therefore he doesn't share their point of view."
Of course, anyone can tell you that neither do the people who claim this while riding around in a Benz and living in mansions.
Anyway, the point is, it's a disgusting comment no matter who's saying it, and that's why racism needs to be ended. All it does is make everyone look stupid. - eclipxe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I'm black and use a mac. To be fair I'm the only black person I know that uses one. I don't know a lot of black people. :-(
- contradictator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9This is obviously the work of Clayface and The Joker!
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -7/+15What?
How could you even speculate like that? You don't know what you'd probably buy, because you're probably not going to spontaneously develop pigment in your skin.
By the way, I see WAY more white guys in their useless "luxury SUVs" trying to show off their bling with 20" rims. - johnred, on 10/10/2007, -18/+26What I find really pathetic is that there were COUNTLESS blog/news posts about the Intel Inside sticker thing but this debacle got hardly any mention anywhere.
Some people seriously need to get their priorities straight. - Shakermaker, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13Whats this about Intel Inside?
- Lyanto, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Stereotyping an entire race is not always racism, because racism involves discrimination. If I say "all black people are rich", I am not really discriminating against them am I? It really depends on what was said, and the context in which it was said.
- tekmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Yeah, a venue like the Laugh Factory is better suited for such "comedy".
- Holk23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8not supporting Drunken batman's comments or anything or SuperLuminal's "practically hating black people" but he has a point in that it is way too easy for a white person to be labeled a racist...just think just how many black comedians can make fun of white people for being "nerdy" and how white people can't dance and all those stereotypes but if a white person where to make any jokes against a minority than it would be considered racist and i would love for you to give me some proof on reactionist conservative whites trying to "redefine" racism considering that whites aren't really allowed a say in what is racists because we are impervious to being stereotyped racially
- BigDawgTE, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I am black. I am writing this on my MacBook. I switched to PC's for the same reason many did: they were cheap, easily (and cheaply) upgradeable, and easy to get (retail, online and mail order). Until recently, none of these were true about Macs. However, I have been using Macs since the Mac Classic in college. Most whites I know use Macs, except for the 20 somethings that think of them as fashion accessories. That is largely how Apple has marketed the newer Macs. I care more about the reliability, ease of use, and yeah, a certain coolness, but not the superficial exterior design, but the way things just work and come together - software ergonomics.
I know many blacks that use Macs, and I am sure that as Apple gains market share, more will, because, just like whites, people of color tend to follow the crowd. When brothers ask me about the machine, and I show them how easily and well things work without a lot of thought and effort, they are impressed, but often a little skeptical. I liken it to the fact that we have been longtime VW owners, in an area where Mercedes Benz's are very popular. Everyone knows about the VW, but there was a one time perception/stigma of them being a cheap car, rather than the excellent, luxurious, rapid, safe and ECONOMICAL transportation that our Passat V6 wagon is. But most associate MB with those (first four) traits, and want to advertise to the world that they value them, so they just follow the crowd, to the MB dealer.
Also, my wife and before her, my last girlfriend both worked in the IT field; 1 for state govt., and 2 for a major private corp., so wifey, at least, only got exposed to Apple because I first built a Hackintosh, and loved it so much that I then bought this Macbook. She loves it too. And we like feeling a little smarter than our neighbors. But, because we have a modicum of class, we wouldn't put our neighbor's "stupidity" on a bumper sticker, OR PROJECT IT ONTO A SCREEN AT AN IT CONFERENCE. Because making fun of "others" (especially b/c you perceive them to be your lessor) is really not that funny, at least not as funny as sticking it too some moron stupid enough to broadcast his racism like a jackass. When many of you were the nerds of the high school, was it funny when jocks picked on and intimidated you? (I was both; 4 sport letterman, and highest SAT scores in my school; I defended the nerds, b/c I knew where they were coming from, had better conversations with them.) - digichris, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11So you didn't catch my point. Good Job.
- jbsnyder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Those interested in a little context: http://blog.clickablebliss.com/2007/08/13/c41-retrospective/
In the end it sounds like whatever he had planned was poorly executed, and who knows what the hell he was thinking. - Vermifax, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Your mom shouldn't let you watch anymore MTV. It's making you kinda stupid.
- ChunkerMunker, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10The people that helped me convert into a Mac user were "black" guys.
Most of the employees at the Mac Mall in my area are "black" employees.
I'm a member of a board in which 90% of the members are "black" and many have converted to using Macs.
Smh @ some of the responses. - digichris, on 10/10/2007, -8/+14So you deal with 300 Mac users out of millions, and not one is black. Wow you guys have a point...you ***** moron. I know a few mac users (3 maybe) and 2 of them are black.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I thought it was going to be a drunk guy in a Batman costume embarrassing himself on a stage.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -40/+46If i were black i would probably buy 26 inch rims instead of a mac
- vault, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'd like to know what Michael Richards thinks about this.
- Odweaver, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Yea, because we definately should take a long break from our daily lives to heckle an obvious racist, instead of giving him the finger and moving on with our lives.
- MariusVW, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5A fine line between racial and racist. If you are quoting fact and the object is not to demean and discriminate then however much those facts seem to point at the obvious (and controversial) does not make them racist.
Seeing that there was only like a single black person in the room at the time, however uncomfortable that statement made people in the room feel, I think it raised a serious point.
I just don't like the confrontational way it was raised... but perhaps there is no non-confrontational way to raise this issue? - Vermifax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm in Oklahoma City. I personally know 28 Black people who own and use Macs. This does not include the 12 that are actually related to me.
I'm Black and I'm a Mac user of 22 years.
I'm just saying... - 4degrees, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7agreed, although freedom of speech goes both ways. one person can spew out all the racist rhetoric they want, while others can spew all the racist bashing rhetoric all they want. either way both parties are doing the same thing: wasting time and breath and accomplishing nothing.
doesn't the old adage go: "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me"
there is some truth to that. - CeeAyy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Where did that come from? Learn to think for yourself and stop listening to whoever is teaching you about politics and race. You don't know what you are talking about.
What's interesting is that you state that you practically hate Black people because of two Black people. That's like hating women because you had two realy bad dates. I'm guessing you didn't need much help hating in the first place. By your rationale all Blacks should hate whites because of David Duke and Don Imus.
Own up to who you really are, you didn't need any help to hate. It's a part of you. It's a shame, you have so much to learn about life and yourself. Maybe if you knew some Black people you wouldn't be so uninformed. No "race" or culture has members who are all the same. - zeejay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5So, then, we're all shocked that some random, outspoken Maclot who goes by the name "DrunkenBatman" would do something politically incorrect... stop the presses...
- rinks, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8 "By the way, I see WAY more white guys in their useless "luxury SUVs" trying to show off their bling with 20" rims."
No you don't. - mal1964, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Is that a blackboard you re a member of?
- lukifer, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Anyone else remember the late iBrotha, Rodney Lain? http://www.macobserver.com/columns/ibrotha/index.html
"The Mac is the ***** of the computer industry." - Vermifax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Because you're not a recording engineer...?
- neodorian, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Black's what don't use Macs? You can't call people stupid and make dumb jokes if you can't even use proper grammar.
- tucsonwc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5And you may be an idiot. So you + your 300 people is a valid statistical sample?
From this you derive that no blacks use Apple products?
Do you think the earth is flat too? - 4degrees, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8i love my stereo.
