- ttntyler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I disagree with the description. iTunes is a great podcast aggregator, it just lacks BitTorrent support
- nate85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you look in the advanced menu in iTunes there is an option to manually subscribe to a podcast, you just enter the RSS feed. It's a lot easier than mucking through the store.
- mahemoff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I, for one, agree with the description, whether or not ITunes supports BT. ITunes is the worst aggregator I've seen, as managing feeds is tedious and painful. True, the directory looks nice and is friendly to people getting started with podcasting. However, adding each new podcast means visiting the Music Store, where every click takes 5 seconds and caching seems to be non-existent. Each category has several pages to go through if you're browsing, making the whole thing a painful experience. And once you've chosen a podcast, you can't choose more on the same page or the same set of search results - you have to start the whole thing again.
ITunes has the massive advantage of being a single unit for playing and aggregating. For podcasting newbies, that seems like a big advantage, why mess with integrating two different applications when one thing does them both? But in reality, the integration is actually pretty seamless. Anyone who's remotely serious about podcasting, and wants to subscribe to more than three feeds, really ought to consider alternatives to itunes for aggregation.
The only time I'd consider using ITunes is in combination with a product like Odeo, where you get a single feed for all your subscriptions. - unfinity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I haven't checked this out in detail yet, but if this was left running would it allow you to get tv shows into Front Row automatically via tvrss.net?
- mckk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, I exaggerated a little bit. I use iTunes and am happy with it. I love its seamless integration with OS X, and on iPod podcasts have its own place. But the lack of bittorrent support was a real pain in the ass.
- splintax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3By subscribing using (a) the feeds that link directly to the mp3/avi etc, or (b) using the iTMS?
- gmacster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I just tried it with my http://feeds.feedburner.com/feed/simpsons and At first I got:
[INFO] Fetching .torrent file: http://www.mininova.org/get/277218
...
Then:
[INFO] Prefetching first 2KB of enclosure: http://www.mininova.org/get/277226
...
Then I got a ***** of these:
########### A CRITICAL ERROR HAS OCCURRED ###########
Please submit the debug.dump file in your data directory to

Also include the URL of the podcast that caused the error, if possible.
##################################################### - neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2iTunes is a great app... sorry to say that its much more bloated than back in the days of 3.0... but with all the requests for features how can it not become such a large app?
this is just one of the many requests to add to iTunes - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3As someone who was into podcasting early on, I agree with you. iTunes is fantastic. It's simple to use and well-featured. I've yet to find anything as easy to use - most of them are just horribly done. And as always, one of the reasons is that iTunes integrates with a fantastic podcast library that is easy to navigate and use.
- trvr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3but wouldn't itunes only find certain formats of shows? (not .avi from tvrss.net) or am I missing something here?
- mac4xbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It didnt work for me either. I have the theary that it is because once iTunes downloads the torrent file which it won't because it is unsupported it doesn't know what to do with it.
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I haven't used another aggregator since iTunes came out but is there anything better?
iTunes blew the competition away by integrating with the iPod (very important to me) and bookmarking shows automatically which is an absolute must.
If there is a better solution I would be open to trying it because iTunes can get clunky and slow on an iBook. - monofonik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wish it fully integrated with iTunes to the point where it would catch clicks from the music store podcast section and add the localhost bit automatically, to the point where you didn't even realize it was happening.
IIRC Adam Curry pushed the iTunes lot at Apple to integrate bittorrent, but I guess a company that works so closely with the labels doesn't want something like that in their software. iTunes store links are fast enough anyway. - Sudar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2iTunes may be great for its integration with iPod but I greatly miss two features. Resuming stopped downloads (mainly if the file size is very big) and scheduling downloads.
For some it may not be a necessary feature but the part of the world where I am currently living bandwidth is limited and I badly need those features. - The_Decryptor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"And once you've chosen a podcast, you can't choose more on the same page or the same set of search results - you have to start the whole thing again."
Yes you can, after subscribing it throws you to the Podcast part in your library, if you click on the music store item you go back to the last page you were on, and it preserves your "browsing history", so you can go back to search pages and such. - subzeroash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2am i doing something wrong? the console just closes by itself...
- splintax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2exactly what i thought - it's not really downloading the podcasts "with iTunes", it's just feeding them to iTunes.
/me waits on iTunes adding BT support - unfinity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How many of those listeners would have subscribed if they HADN'T found you through iTunes?
- empl3h, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Great now maybe Apple will add this support into iTunes, just like they did with Bootcamp after Narf and Blanka got Windows working on the intel macs.
- alienvenom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can someone test it out with tvRSS? :)
- computerbynar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, its working now. Thanks hob0001
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2great idea, it would be a fabulous solution if that worked.
- celticeric, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Definitely worth a digg.
- hobb0001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm the author of iTorrent and I just discovered that it has been dugg. Anyway, if you're having problems getting it started on Windows, it's because there's an undocumented dependency on Win32 Extensions, which can be downloaded at http://starship.python.net/crew/mhammond/win32/Downloads.html
I didn't discover the dependency problem until recently. (I have Win32 Extensions installed on my system but didn't realize that the BitTorrent module that iTorrent uses was using it.) Anyway, the dependency will be documented shortly and will be removed entirely in the next release of iTorrent. - mckk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But iTunes doesn't download the torrent file. The iTorrent scripts download the torrent and use it to dwonload the file itself, and then feed it to iTunes. They work like your own server. Did you remember to add http://localhost/ at the beginning of the rss adress?
- hexix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you're trying a RSS torrent subscription that has divx/xvid media, then iTunes won't be able to play it unless you get a divx quicktime component. If you're on a mac, the guys at divx.com have one you can install. I'm not sure how to get divx support for iTunes in windows.
- aspro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Its a bit of a cludgey hack, hopefully it will improve some, or Apple will add Bittorrent functionality of their own
- gamma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://www.videora.com/
This uses RSS and bittorrent. I use the free trial and It works really well for me. iTunes is ok but I prefer foobar2000 as a player.
Videora also has a way to automate connecting and converting to a PSP. http://www.pspvideo9.com/pspcasting.html - kindrobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've been waiting for this for a LONG time. Wonderful.
- redivider, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"I, for one, agree with the description, whether or not ITunes supports BT. ITunes is the worst aggregator I've seen, as managing feeds is tedious and painful. It sounds like you have more of a problem with the Podcast Directory then the actual podcast aggregator in iTunes.
I agree the Music Store performance is pretty bad sometimes, but I hardly ever use it anyway. I've tried iPodder and some other apps and for me iTunes is just as good, Maybe it doesn't support BitTorrent feeds, but whatever. That's not really a major obstacle for most people. - unfinity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I got the same result when I tried. I wonder if it does have to do with file format? Though, you'd think that it would be iTunes throwing up the errors - not the script...
- crossers, on 07/22/2008, -0/+0I don't know why but it doesn't run on my computer.

http://www.chasr.org/ - hexix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm not sure how other aggreagators compare, but iTunes uses way too much CPU when updating a large amount of podcats. It basically does them all at the same time, instead of queing them up then only checking/downloading 2 or 3 at a time.
I purchased an intel mac mini for front row, and it's been working pretty cool except for when it updates podcats. One time I was watching a DVD and it started getting jerky and weird. I realized that iTunes was updating podcats in the background. That's pretty bad if you can make DVD playback jerky, since most of that should be in hardware. - mckk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I guess so. The torrent podcasts are added to iTunes just like normal ones. You don't even have to leave the script running when you watch/listen to a podcast. You only need them to download.

I'm wondering if the same problem is happening with iTorrent.
- fox, on 04/11/2009, -1/+1http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20051013124423475 and http://digg.com/apple/Make_Itunes_6_accept_non-native_video_formats
should work for windows also.
mac users: check comments of article for a applescript to automate it. - alienvenom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I will have to investigate this further. The overall possiblity of it working with iTunes is pretty high. Mesasge me on AIM (screen name is the same as my username) to discuss this further.

Does anyone know why? - danielbower, on 10/12/2007, -1/+090% of my podcast listeners subscribe through iTunes. It annoys me to think how much iTunes has damaged traditional text communication between podcasters and their audience. No one using iTunes reads posts between our casts and there is no chance for us to gain revenue throught traditional advertising either.
Talk about shooting the podcast community in the foot. - mckk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That's weird. I can download macbrek, but when I tried something from tvRSS it said that the torrent file is not valid. Azureus has no problems with downloadig.
- Jlowe110, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You have to have Itorrent to download the torrent files. But yeah doesn't work for me either even when I add localhost onto it.

ugm,
I'm much more comfortable managing my subscriptions online. All the usual reasons - multiple boxes, will survive a crash of my PC, I can listen to podcasts from a separate PC, etc.
My personal choice at this time is to have a podcastnova account and use their specialised version of Juice to sync with it. (http://www.podnova.com/index_for_listeners.srf)
I used Odeo for a few months, really like the interface, but they have a big problem right now in that you can't delete old items from your feed, so I have a feed with over 2000 items and growing! Crashes any podcatcher that tries to grab it. Odeo's support said they're very aware they need to fix it, understand they need an easy way to clean up old podcasts, but still haven't put a fix in.
