Rightclick->View Page Info->Media - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+65What he's saying is not a lot of people know that you can use the built in tools of safari to download hidden files without having to look at all the source code.
- Adrianc333, on 10/11/2007, -20/+77Is this, really news?
It's on the ***** menu bar. - godofpumpkins, on 10/11/2007, -9/+62rolling on the floor laughing laughing laughing laughing laughing laughing?
3 years? this feature has been in safari for as long as I can remember. Just because a digg post appears doesn't mean it's news... - AlexFerny, on 10/11/2007, -10/+62clearly inaccurate title :) its not ANY file, password protect files in a password protected dir, or files that are not accessible thanks to .htaccess cant be downloaded :)
- kuyman, on 10/11/2007, -10/+60You can run firefox on a mac.
That puts you at least 3 years behind. - ricksite, on 10/11/2007, -3/+27"Safari's hidden tool"
How is this hidden? What next, how to use a hidden feature to open a URL? (hint: Go to File > Open Location...) - Spuy767, on 10/11/2007, -6/+28Not to mention that you've been able to do this in safari since release which was, if I recall, 5 years ago?
- cr4ft, on 10/11/2007, -10/+31Is there some kind of Firefox plugin that could accomplish this?
- Eastlygod, on 10/11/2007, -14/+33Sorry for the abuse...
http://duggmirror.com/apple/Download_ANY_file_from_ANY_site_using_Safari - jamesjgill, on 10/11/2007, -8/+26@cr4ft
I had a look around, and there's a 'fox plugin called DownloadHelper that seems to do the job: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006 - cynicist, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Ignore him, hes an idiot. Probably doesn't even realize that konquerer and safari share the same html layout engine. Apple adopted it for safari in 2002, and now because of the code differences KHTML developers are looking to backport it soon. Yes thats why they are both acid2 compliant, and firefox won't be for another year.
- Hemingrubbish, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19you just said it.
- jeriqo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17He didn't talk about right-clicking, and a flash movie is not a link.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -9/+19It is if you didn't know about it.
***** relax. - FSFunky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9How exactly is this going to save me money?
- Odjn, on 10/11/2007, -7/+16I just tried a youtube video, didn't work at all, just reloaded the page. Buried for inaccurate.
- chrisxkelley, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10@Eastlygod:
thanks for the mirror link, but dugg down because that wasn't comment abuse.
i'm sick of people saying that for posting anything. - LMControl, on 10/11/2007, -11/+19Ahhh.... another linux user fulfills the stereotype. Instead of ugly American we should change the saying to ugly Linux user...
- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8@ AnotherCanadian
And I'm sure the three months since have been a whirlwind of downloading. - lkv87, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9that was 'option' click not 'right' click smart ass...
- lkv87, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10This isnt news either but, option clicking any link will download that link (whatever it maybe) for you.
- UGM2099, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7It's great for web development too.. you can see errors reported by the status bar then check the activity window to see what linked file didn't load.
- MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7So, you believe that a relatively obscure browser function makes you gay? You really need to get out more.
- schnuck, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7it's when a copywriter writes copy. visit an ad agency. they are full of them.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7and since you said you use it I guess it makes you gay too
- MadtownTim, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6spuy - why would you pay a registration fee for something you get readily get for free?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5"This is inaccurate because the "activity window" is simply a monitor that tells you what's going on. It doesn't list "hidden" files, it lists files that may not be linked to in the page itself."
It does actually, it shows you files being requested by flash, useful for downloading flvs and such. - rasterbator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4IMHO, the best use for this tool is NOT for downloading items from a page that you visit. The best use of this tool is to see which ad domains are being used on the site, so that you can add them to your hosts file:
0.0.0.0 ad.doubleclick.net
FYI - if you like watching NBC programs on their web site, you can watch them WITHOUT annoying delays for their ads by blocking their advertisement domains in your hosts file. For example, watching Heroes you can jump from Part One to each successive part without the ads in between. - chadu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4As a web developer, I use this feature often. It helps me diagnose "file not found" problems and assist with loading external media (eg. swf and xml files). It's quite useful and I suppose it does save me money, but it certainly helps speed that process along.
Whenever I show anyone this feature, I do get a reaction of surprise, so I guess it's sort of news to most. - DarknessGP, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Should be noted that the title is inaccurate. This is NOT a download any file from any website, it's download any file from any page. i.e. you can't download stuff unless it's on the page that you are currently viewing.
- cynicist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The acid2 test is based on W3C HTML and CSS 2.0 specifications, not hackish code. So in other words it does the opposite of what you asked.
- albatross5000, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Huh? Money saver? Download ANY file from ANY webpage? The title is so hyped up and totally inaccurate. So weird that this is getting close to 500 diggs.
buried for inaccuracy and hype. The fanfare on this one is so strange... - jamesjgill, on 10/11/2007, -6/+9I think that's why it says "you MIGHT also like..." And a lot of Mac users are interested in design, so it's pretty much a no brainer.
- lawton992, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You can also accomplish this by using the "Net" tab in the FireBug extension for Firefox.
- gmprunner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3How does that make it retarded?
- PathDaemon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@msikma
Files may be shown which aren't in the source. If a flash movie starts to load an FLV, if an AJAX app loads files on the fly, they'll be there.
A separate note: option+doubleclicking will force a download even if the file displays in-browser by default. - gfnw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It's not quite the same thing, but Ctrl+J in Opera allows you to view and download all links on the current page. Might be useful to know for some.
- ricksite, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Angostura, the debug menu is hidden. Using a modifier key to see something might classify it as hidden. If it is in plain sight then it might be considered "little known".
- imcquill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Just rename it as 'get_video.flv', and if you've got Perian, http://perian.org/ installed, you can watch it in quicktime.
- PURDooM, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Sounds like you need konqueror.
- msikma, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8This is inaccurate because the "activity window" is simply a monitor that tells you what's going on. It doesn't list "hidden" files, it lists files that may not be linked to in the page itself. It does not show any things that you can't otherwise find by looking at the source. It's really useful for web development, especially to tell whether those broken images are not found or simply not permitted to be loaded.
- Hidekatsu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3One of the many reasons I'm a proud Safari user!
- Cappa0LAWL, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Why don't you learn how to spell?
- zmigliozzi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Not going back to safari until you can use google browser sync with it.
- c33pays, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This was posted in Wired Magazine last year, to disclose how to get free videos on your Ipod
- cookiebearo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3really?
i just watched a youtube video with uni the hedgehog and i opened up the activity monitor and i saw some ...get_video file at 4% of 4.4 mb. once it finished loading i double clicked it (looks like it re-downloaded anyway) and it downloaded a "get_video" file to my desktop at 4.4mb
then i opened vlc, went to open file, and selected it -- no file extension or anything -- and it opens and plays fine - cynicist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2They are testing browsers not on how they "display" the invalid css, but how they "handle" the invalid css. (which could mean not displaying certain elements)
- Eastlygod, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@chrisxkelley
I was under the impression comment abuse was reply to a comment with a post that had nothing to do with any of the posts above it, just to get it further up the page, which is what I did, for a good cause, to post the mirror link. - TheCorroborator, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4haha, haha, haha oh sorry you're NOT funny!
