- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -6/+66Yeah but the real question is: when is it going to go Web FREE.0?
- ungamedplayer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Dude, you are expiring in 18 days, don't waste your time on digg, spend time with your family, have some fun, enjoy what you have left of life.
- ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I'll digg this *****. It's about damned time.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19I'm getting sick of this "web 2.0" tag, it's lame as hell.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17*you're

learn how to spell, you 'retard'. - JoshuaGross, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13"By the way, I bet in like 5 years, no one would know who Bill Gates is LOL!"
That sentence alone made me digg you down.
I am a Mac user. Never plan to change. But to think that Bill won't be remembered for 100 years after his death is foolish. - moofer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13The others are free because they're plastered with ads. Either on-screen when you're using their service, or tacked onto the end of each email you send out. There are no ads on .Mac, and as long as this is the case, I'm willing to pay for it. Everyone loves to cry about "But the others are all free!!! WAH!!!!" Well? What's stopping you? Go use them! Why does .Mac have to be like EVERYONE ELSE? There needs to be room in this world for at least one service that doesn't have to advertise.
Plus, .Mac provides IMAP, IMAP-SSL, as well as POP and POP-SSL. Do you have any idea how much server impact there is with IMAP mail? These guys are doing it on the open internet. This is the same enterprise-type mail you see in large companies. With over a million users, this has to be the largest IMAP deployment in the world. You don't just go and make something like that free.
Go use Google. - iAlex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Faster hosting, more capacity, powerful website creator, and more features, yeah I think .Mac have a very big potential.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Meh, I'm within a week that I have to renew my .Mac membership, and I'm not sure if I really want to...honestly all I use from them is the e-mail service.
And I happen to have two of my own webservers so it isn't a big deal.
Time to call Apple and ask about it. - gr8one, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I wish they would offer some of the services for free, even if it wasn't all of them. I understand they need to make money, but to charge for these services when there are so many free things available from other companies is starting to look a little out-dated.
- beeblebrox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I keep hearing the argument about how people are so glad that .Mac isn't free because of banner ads. Does that mean you'd be really happy if Digg started charging you money to come here instead of having banner ads? I doubt it. And those people also forget about gmail, which is free. People LOVE it and no one seems to have any problems with the ads or with spammers. Is Apple somehow less capable than Google?
I have my own domain, no banner ads, and I pay LESS money for MORE storage space and more customization than .Mac. I want a .Mac account for myself, so I can use iWeb the way it's supposed to be used as well as iSync and iDisk. But the cost is simply way out of proportion for what you get. - torifile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is front page material?!? I could have written this up myself and posted it on my blog when I first saw that announcement this morning but I thought that would be a lame submission.
- moofer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I'd agree with you... it is expansive... or did you mean expensive?
Why does it need to be free? Becauase you said so? Why don't you provide a good reason for it being free.
I'll give you reasons for why it shouldn't be free...
- Hotmail is/was free... it turned into a haven for spammers. Charging for accounts keeps out the riff-raff.
- They don't allow crawlers, so therefore, your username isn't plastered all over the internet
- If the service was free, they'd have to turn it into a POP-only, webmail-based service.
- There'd be banner ads everywhere - right now, it's 100% ad free. No flashing animated gifs, no annoying audio from some company thinking they're being cute, nothing. Just you, and your mail. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's $99 and it's not worth it in it's current form. The mail is mediocre at best and the iDisk takes forever to upload data. This comes from someone who does have it.
- moofer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Amen brother. It's about time so shift this Web 2.0 paradigm to a b2b customer-centric realm outside the box.
- valley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What happens if you don't renew your Mac membership? Can you reactivate it later on if you reconsider with the same email address?
- jakebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4the idisk sync is very nice
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ anothergene, I certainly wouldn't bet against that!
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@moofer
very well put. my thoughts exactly. - Raian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I expire in 18 days--- and I am really torn as to whether or not this is valuable.... while they are at it they should make a notifier app/widget for the PC/Mac
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2problem is that it's proprietary.
- Clodagh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well guys if not free, it should be way cheaper anyway, possibly $29. I think it they want to create an instant huge network though, and leverage the sales for more new Mac's they could make the new and improved .Mac free, and more than more than cover the cost with growing sales because of that.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had a Mac the time my sister bought one. I said do you want me to show you how to do video chats it's very cool, and it's free. She said she did! I told her you must get .Mac, it's €99. She was like huh? I thought it was free? I said it is, but you need .Mac.
The point being I have a new Mac with a built-in iSight, and so does my sister, but because .Mac is such a rip-off, we have never used our cameras for a video chat once, how's that for ease-of-use? - alexdagrate, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Rather than everyone waiting for Google to use Ajax to create webapps from scratch, Apple should use Ajax to move their apps to the web. Having an Ajax, web-based doppelganger for iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, and iCal would finally make the overpriced service worth it.
As of now, I only use .mac because its easy to use with RapidWeaver. - r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes you can re-activate later. Once you have a .Mac e-mail address, it remains assigned to you forever.
I had e-mail on there for my wife too. Tried to get her using another service, but she just didn't like the experience, much prefered her .Mac, so re-activated. - briansalo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think it's a decent service with the integration into OS X; but obviously you can get all of what .mac offers for pretty much free if you know where to look... I sent a few emails in claiming that .mac users might as well pack up and start a Vox account if things were going to stay the way they were...
- lowededwookie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Actually I wouldn't mind if Digg started charging people to post here.
Then there would be less double ups and less morons who post Mac hating crap in a Mac section of the site.
I love .Mac and I think the price is alright. You're not just getting an e-mail account and that's what some people are forgetting.
Disk storage
E-Mail

Software discounts
Backing up your data
Integration with your desktop
What free service offers all that? Please tell me because I really want to know. - jakebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3People like to talk about .mac... not the lame person who wrote it. It's funny that you are saying "this is front page material" ... If it is on the front page, it is silly to ask, because you should know that the answer is "yes." Else, logically, it would not be posted there. I don't like you.
- uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's great that Apple is updating dotMac and that they're paying attention to what their users want. Unfortunately, I do have some bad news...THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS WEB 2.0.
I know it's hard to come to grips with...but it's the truth.
But seriously...am I the only one who is getting completely fed up with the term "web 2.0"? - matthewwanderer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just a heads up for the Apple users that don't want to pay $99/year for DotMac. I've posted a how-to save 20%-50% on .Mac here:
http://homepage.mac.com/cherrypop/blogappleproject/files/2181b108aaec7cdc4260c3d574675109-29.html
The last copy I bought cost me $49 shipped. That's a price I can live with. - raynevandunem, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4@ mywhitenoise
He was making fun of how Crepsley spelled his words, dumbass.
@ Crepsley
'I love you MAC!'
k, then...... >.>; - glev2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"but aren't dot Mac and Web 2.0 just buzz words that people use to make themselves sound smart?"
"im fired aren't I?"
"oh yes..."
begin.flogging="true" - ultmast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It's $99 and it's not worth it in it's current form."
Not worth it to _you_. I have no problem with it not being worth it for you or anyone else; the service is very well worth it for me and several other Mac professionals and hobbyists I know.
"The mail is mediocre at best and the iDisk takes forever to upload data."
The iDisk can be slow, definitely, but I don't see what's mediocre about the Mail. IMAP is very nice, I'm integrated with my existing address book, I have multiple free email aliases, and the experience is seamless with Apple's Mail.app client.
It's not for everyone, and I don't begrudge a single soul their alternatives, but it's not as bad as some people are keen to suggest. - Alex.w, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Its all about the market. If something sells then no it shouldn't be free. Almost no one would pay for a .mac account if it only did the same as a gmail account, but it doesn't.
I personally would pay a little if digg decided to go that route. It would have to be really cheap because there are 100s of other sites waiting to take this spot.
I'd I my self don't have a .mac account. I have my own mail system too, and don't need the other stuff that comes with .mac. - ultmast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Ireland
What the heck are you talking about saying the video chat requires .Mac? All you need is a completely free AIM or Jabber or GoogleChat account to use iChat. I video chat with iChat with several of my friends who have macs who either wouldn't touch .Mac with a 10 foot pole, or want to use their existing IM account.
You can also use your built-in camera with other clients, like Yahoo's OS X client, the latest Skype client, and some dedicated video solutions.
It sounds like you've been shortchanging yourself badly on this one, and your sister, too. - Dolomite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Digg for having Web 2.0 in the title
- stockjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ajax, bah Flex will flex its muscle soon enough. There is more to flash than most realize.
- whozyerdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I tried that a few years ago when I cancelled my .Mac account, suggesting to Apple they offer an email-only service for less $. They actually got back to me a few months later saying (basically) they'd take it under advisement (yeah, right).
Gmail is your friend. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2That was pretty funny! What he said above, and for God's sake don't spend your last night in jail like Homer Simpson ..rofl
- samuel514, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I love work on a mac, I'm a ol' PC guy but i love mac because they are better that's it, But .Mac is way to expansive, its should be free !
- razei, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4I'd rather have hell.
- mikeroySoft, on 10/19/2009, -7/+2"Apparently, someone very powerful was listening and changes are coming."
Aside from the fact the poster's name is Yokel, there are so many things going wrong with this sentance. - turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -15/+8I use a mac, and your retarded.
bet you never hurd that b4. - Crepsley, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3I'm sorry, I didn't state it correctly about Bill Gates. I meant no-one would really know what windows is anymore. I didn't mean like as a person. He is a great guy that donates soooooooooooo much money every day. In one year he has donated about 2 billion. He is a great person, i just don't like windows cause it is too complicated.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1web2.mac
- Crepsley, on 10/12/2007, -16/+7It could take some time, until Mac beats windows, at least until windows excepts the fact that Mac is better and easier to use. :)
Mac for PRESIDENT! - fakerjohn, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5That's what I'm sayin; if somebody high-up is listening, let me say this:
Mac needs to be cheaper! Us poor folk like 'puters too, ya know! Us poor folk like NICE 'puters too! - Four20, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5wow, an upgrade to the mail system
/end sarcasm
but it's about apple, so no wonder it makes it to the front page - Crepsley, on 10/12/2007, -23/+3Only a smart person would know that .Mac is one of the easiest software to use to create a PRO website. You could only be retarded or hate Macs to not be able to use this. The Web 2.0 is gonna make this so much easier. Mac always creates a good program. I love you MAC. By the way, I bet in like 5 years, no one would know who Bill Gates is LOL!
If your a windows guy, I know you gonna' grade this down, but b4 you do...Let me guess....You have never used a Mac b4. Its time to try new things, or to be more precised, better things! - i440, on 10/12/2007, -24/+1Um, I forgot to hit reply.
Digg down if you're okay with this
Actually Digg filtered my second post out so this just a complete failure of a post, isn't it?

What is Digg?
