- ToadLeg, on 10/11/2007, -4/+288I was on a 200 mile bus ride at night and every minute the whole bus would light up blue. Someone sitting near me was wearing a "bluetooth earpiece" (and not talking on it) which apparently has a very bright LED that flashes every minute like a big sign "I'M A DOUCHE!!!...I"M A DOUCHE!!!...I"M A DOUCHE..."
- theonlyvlad, on 10/11/2007, -45/+210Hey some people like them. Ever been to a big BYOC event? Many beatiful, bright, over the top cases.
See, if you want to run Windows/Linux, you have a choice depending on taste, from the simplest design (hey, even can get a mac), to the craziest ones.
If you want to run Mac OS, you have a choice of....... of.... white. Oh and black. And silver, sort of. It's especially ironic, apple's forceful, homogenous design, considering their 1984 ad that was all about being different. - doctorfungi, on 10/11/2007, -8/+103Who doesn't want their room looking like a rave party?
- idiotwithastick, on 10/11/2007, -9/+70Dell lights are useful too, as the submitter kindly pointed out: you can read with them.
- KMye, on 10/11/2007, -1/+46Current Dell XPS:

Always reminds me of Jawa sand crawlers when I see them... - elvenseven, on 10/11/2007, -7/+45How about not buying a Dell and build a PC yourself. You can even ditch the activity and power lights.
- JoCliMe, on 10/11/2007, -3/+41Let's see...in my room (where I sleep) I have two digital clocks, a light from a ps2, Wii, my cell phone charging, my laptop charging/on, a faint glow from the logo on my tv, a light from my DirectTV unit, display from surround sound...oh and the big one....a Netgear Home-plug adapter with three extremely bright flashing network lights.
Yes, I'm tired of them - Kelmon, on 10/11/2007, -4/+39Yeah, I like the way that my old PowerBook and current MacBook Pro have a light on them that pulses when it is sleeping - it almost looks like it's breathing. The downside, however, is that the light is pretty bright such that I have to cover it if I am sleeping in the same room as it when travelling else it keeps me awake.
- logic6, on 10/11/2007, -14/+45I am sorry, I love my MacBook Pro, (with an even brighter sleep LED than previous versions) but... That LED is so bright, and it pulses... Like an ominous clock ticking down. There should be an option to turn those of...
- OpenFuture, on 10/11/2007, -17/+46I agree, if anything I want more lights damnit.
- TheKillDoctor, on 10/11/2007, -5/+30If you those bright led's annoy you then find some goth girl with black nail polish and paint over it. It will reduce the intensity by about half.
- Topher06, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30Man, move out of your parents basement and half that stuff can go in your very own living room and not in your bedroom.
- yensed, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24When I go to sleep, I close my eyes. So I really don't notice.
- PabloIV, on 10/11/2007, -4/+26I like all the lights, makes me feel like my equipment is waiting for me while I'm falling asleep.

- platypibri, on 10/11/2007, -7/+25This is a non-issue really. Some people like to buy a cheaper civic or accord and chip it and trick it out. That's good for them. Some people like the refined elegance and thoughtful design of a BMW or Lexus, and feel no need to modify what they consider a perfection. At the end, both camps really like their cars.
Folks, we CAN co-exist. I stopped hating on Windows and PCs a long time ago, and it's had the effect of making my circle of influence more open-minded to the Mac platform. What's that they used to say about flys and honey? - LunarOcean, on 10/11/2007, -6/+24The more technology blue LEDs there are, the better.
- CatsAreGods, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20Sorry, I originally got into computers *because* I liked blinking lights. 40 years later...
- Mach10X, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16I'm sorry but you could run the LEDs for years for the amount of power it took for you to heat up your burrito in the microwave just now.
- dime, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16The three things that will get the attention of any self respecting man:
- perky boobs
- free beer
- blinking lights
It's the Male Distraction Trifecta - chewy5000, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18@Frogslegs
In native oz, the busses are filled with blue lights "to stop the druggies being druggies on the busses" - pred8tr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Personally I love the lights on my system. It's like sitting in the cockpit of a fighter plane. I even have a 2 person checklist that must be performed prior to booting my system. There are 24 steps, each one requiring flipping a switch or adjusting a slider. Furthermore, for every switch that gets flipped there is an accompanying whistle like the sound effect for powering up 'proton pack' from Ghostbusters. My crowning glory comes after initializing main power, completeing my checklist, and booting my OS. That's when I get to engage primary cooling, perform a controlled startup of my main reactor and live-rollover from the power grid and go completely self contained.
Yum... I love my fancy lights. Sometimes I even trigger a thermal runaway just to see my panel light up. The neighbor kids all have 3 arms and 8 fingers. Oh I gotta go. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is at the door. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13we had candles back in my day.
- Spamiclese, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17No.
- imeddy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Yeah, definitely not the machine to buy if you hate lights so much...
- lepton, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Who wrote the law that every bluetooth headset must have a damn blue light on it?!
- Snakedal337, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15But lights make your Dell Gaming Experience EPIC!
/sarcasm - capran, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Blue LEDs were a novelty a few years ago when they first appeared in products. I even bought a few bare LEDs from Radio Shack and replaced some of the ugly yellow-green or red ones in my computer. But the novelty wore off. Most blue LEDs (and white ones, too) are way too bright. The purpose of the light should just be to indicate that the device is on or active, but when the light is obnoxiously bright, it's ANNOYING AS ALL HELL. I cover them up now, and am thinking of painting over them, or maybe putting a resistor in line so the brightness is diminished.
- FearMoth, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I find jerking off before bed helps me get to sleep.
- Aliarse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9@l0g1x (#6672871) said: "The amount of light coming from your PC defines how expensive and cool your computer is. It's like cars; it's cool to put lights on your car."
So if we take your comment as truth, the one with the most stickers/lights is the slowest peice of ***** you've ever seen.
Because everyone knows that the car with the brightest neons and most ***** up graphics/paintjob, is usually the 20 year old, 90bhp, FWD ***** with a crappy bolt on "exhaust" and a fake typeR sticker on the back. - smedrick, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Dude, yes. I have so many lights glowing at night that it's hard to get to sleep sometimes. PS2, keyboard, cellphone, electric razor cleaner, stereo, PSP charger, USB hub...enough already! I've managed to cover or remove most of the brightest LEDs, but it's still ridiculous.
- gfnw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Lights look "pro"? Yes that's obviously why all professional workplaces are covered in strobes and neons.
- silverchrysalis, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10i eat mine frozen.
- richardtallent, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Did someone say "blinkenlights"?
ACHTUNG! ALLES LOOKENSPEEPERS!

Ok, I'm showing my age. - PhillyMJS, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10@ everyone who has a Mac in their bedroom:
The sleep light on my G5 keeps me awake if I don't cover it. I cut a small rectangle of matte black foamcore, jammed a bent paperclip through it, and hung it over the light and power switch from one of the convenient holes in the front. I just leave it there all the time now-- it doesn't obstruct airflow and does the best job of blocking the light out of everything else I've tried. - brianbb98, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10exactly.
- kidcoconut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8You work on fireflies? Those are natures LED's.
- adc86, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13Like my server?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -13/+21Macs remind me of Henry Ford and the infamous model T. ..
"Any customer can have a MacBook painted any color that he wants so long as it is white." - philippbock, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11No, but like the stuff you don't need. Like your screen, your speakers, your phone and – imagine that – even your computer.
- mesoiam, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8It's blue LEDs that annoy me, they are far too bright and blue light doesn't focus properly on the retina. This means they are constantly blurry and distracting and so not suitable for indicator lights.
- tokyopimp, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Yes because you have to live in your parents basement to have a room full of lights, you know people live with roommates, in small apartments, etc.
- autoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Wow, I seem to disagree with 95% of the digg population, I begin to see myself as a rara avis between all these comments. I hate the trend that puts lights on everything for the sake of it, be it cars, radios, computers or a house in cristmas. I just happen to hate there's something about it that seems like a childish draw for attention. A desperate call for friends when people feel more alone than ever.
- B3bomber, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I know what they mean by useless lights or just plain overly bright lights. My PC is in my room and the HD light is brighter than a night with a full moon outside. I put white paper over the lights to dim them to acceptable levels.
- 256byteram, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6From the Jargon File:
BLINKENLIGHTS (blink'@n-lietz) n. Front-panel diagnostic lights on a
mainframe CPU. Derives from the last word of the famous
blackletter-Gothic "ACHTUNG! ALLES LOOKENSPEEPERS!" notice in
mangled pseudo-German that once graced about half the computer
rooms in the English-speaking world. The following text ran: "Das
computermachine ist nicht fur gefingerpoken und mittengrabben. Ist
easy schnappen der springenwerk, blowenfusen und poppencorken mit
spitzensparken. Ist nicht fur gewerken bei das dumpkopfen. Das
rubbernecken sichtseeren keepen hans in das pockets muss; relaxen
und watch das blinkenlichten." This silliness dates back at least
as far as the London University ATLAS site in the 1960s, but
(judging by the idioms) was probably composed by an American at
some still-earlier date. - gfnw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Bluetooth = Blue lights! It's clever!
- adolfojp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I couldn't agree more.
I like to fall asleep to the sound of music and my laptop computer attached to external speakers is my stereo. It is a HP Pavilion with a thousand blue LEDs and it drives me insane. Its like having a blue night light on. I wish I knew of a way to turn them off. - Mach10X, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I'm sorry did you just say HID LED? There's no such thing. There may be high intensity LEDs but HID (high intensity discharge) refers to a physical phenomenon that is absolutely impossible to make in a LED.
- TheSeraph, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5My PC case was Free After Rebate. Beat that, moron.
- JangoFett, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4My new tv has a blistering blue "standby" light that comes on when you turn it "off" with the remote. I put up with that for 3 seconds before I covered the light with electrical tape.
