- MikeSetera, on 07/02/2008, -2/+68Not too sharp, eh AT&T? I can just imagine the conversation....
AT&T: "Well we can just sell them without a contract for $600 and $700 to offset that.."
Jobs: "How much is cancellation?"
AT&T: "$175"
Jobs: "What if someone figures out 199 + 175 < 600?"
AT&T: "...God help us.." - inactive, on 07/02/2008, -1/+36iphwnd
- douch3mom, on 07/03/2008, -8/+31I have an even more lucrative idea:
Don't buy an iPhone - kkiran, on 07/02/2008, -2/+17Its definitely not so easy as it seems. Better wait rather than waste time in lines on July 11th.
- aguyingilbert, on 07/02/2008, -1/+16That's awesome. Way to stick it to yourselves AT&T
- MtheoryX, on 07/02/2008, -1/+14AT&T: "*****, nailed by math again."...*an hero*
- LightSpeed4, on 07/02/2008, -1/+10the 16gb iphone is $700
ahahahah - jpop, on 07/03/2008, -0/+9He said ask for a store manager...
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -0/+7They blacklist the IMEI so what, it's not like that iPhone will ever be used with at&t again.
- EverydayCrap, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6Stea1lth is right... they'll hit you with an "equipment charge" if you term your contract. I'm pretty sure the contract states that if you cancel your service within two years you'll have to either return the phone or pay the equipment charge, i.e. the amount they subsidized ($325'ish).
- bignah, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5This is definitely something to consider. I was ready to buy the iPhone 3G legit come July 11th in Canada through Rogers but upon hearing their price plans I decided I wasn't willing to bend over that much. Maybe this way I can have my iPhone 3G cake and eat it too.
- kinseyincanada, on 07/02/2008, -1/+6so you dont have to jailbreak them anymore to use them on a different carrier? or is this just how you buy a phone somply without a contract.
- cpower01, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4If they are rich and spoiled won't they just get the 3G one as well?
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -1/+5Thats my plan, i have an iphone and i am not happy with atts scheme along with apple. The phone is excellent but its tainted by these 2 companies of what it could really be. What if it had un restricted blue tooth, MMS, unlocked, video recording, full mp3s are ring tones, wouldn't it be nice? the answer is yes
- DarkDx, on 07/02/2008, -1/+5good point.
- UnterDenLinden, on 07/03/2008, -1/+5At this moment, this story has 513 diggs, and is still in upcoming.
- CharlesSaint, on 07/02/2008, -2/+6I'm pretty sure if this hits the front page we might be spoiling a good thing here. Let's hope no one from AT&T browses Digg or Gizmodo.
Edit: I also wonder what they plan to do about the increased data rates that 3G iPhones have if you go for the contract-less version. Part of the reason they bumped the data plan up to $30 is to subsidize the price cut of the 3G version. If you buy it outright, do you get the original $20 data plan? - Sheeplike, on 07/02/2008, -2/+6This was the first thing I thought about after watching the keynote. It will only benefit those who have good enough credit to not have to put down a deposit, otherwise you will lose it when you cancel the contract.
- kiantech, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3how is the phone unlocked, if you buy it for 699 isnt it still locked to att? Am I missing something, att does not sell unlocked iphones. they just sell it cheaper if you get a 2 year contract.
- nourkah, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3So if they're actually selling unlocked phones then I assume that someone will find a way to use the same unlocking method and prevent them from bricking every time they upgrade the firmware? That will be so nice, it was such a hassle waiting around for hacks to do the firmware upgrades.
- arestme, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4You cancel then go in to buy a new iphone the they tell you sorry you don't qualify for a phone with us. DOH
- gfunk84, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4You still won't be able to get unlimited data from Rogers, so how would this help?
- oiooioio, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Watch out for the ETF to go up .....
- dunktim, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3They lock the phone so it's still locked to AT&T's network. You're just not locked into a contract, which is pretty dumb.
- jhop, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3THEY'RE NOT UNLOCKED!!! When will you people stop calling it unlocked. It's unsubsidized. Big difference.
They will charge your credit card for the subsidization if you don't return the phone. C'mon guys. This is pitiful. There will be ways around it, but not this easy... - Stea1th, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4It won't work....
AT&T will not only charge you a early termination fee...but they will charge you extra for the phone for not returning their equipment - Brutis, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4This isn't cable service, no one is renting equipment.
- jpop, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2and unlock that too?
- flamov, on 07/03/2008, -3/+5I find it funny living here in Hong Kong. I'm 17 and there are a lot of spoilt kids in my school, and a small bunch of them have iPhones; unlocked ones, despite it being illegal to have an iPhone in Hong Kong in the first place. Now that the 3G has come out, all I can do is laugh at them... I know it's probably an irrelevant comment and I might get dugg down, but a different perspective is always nice.
- jrwr, on 07/03/2008, -5/+7Err, I work for ATT Wireless Retention Dept, We call this P-Churn, its annoying as hell, all you have to do is just ASK for a store mgr and if you over the year hump with your upgrade (No your contract end date is NOT your upgrade date, its when you last got a phone, till 22 months from then,) they will be more then happy to upgrade you, most of the time your phone does have to be broke tho.... ATM Retention Dept has no idea if they can sell them or not, no memo just yet on that, but any other phone after 6 months we can get you, PLEASE ask for us, now are prices are not always the same as in store (LG Shine in that Dept runs for 200$) but its alot better then loosing your number / Bad Cred with us (Yes we do record if you have paid a ETF and if you do it to0 many times, you can have a massive deposit) just ***** ASK for a new phone, see if BEUC / Cust Care can get you a phone, if not threaten to remove your whole account most of the time they will transfer you to us, and if your after 6 mo we can upgrade you, now for the new iphone no clue just yet check back on the 11th
- cmorriss, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2You have to keep the contract for a month. After that, they won't expect a return of the equipment. Yours free and clear after paying the early termination fee.
- crowbar77, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Isnt rogers the only GSM network in Canada?
- Doblon, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1but after you've canceled the contract, you still have to unlock it to use it with a different carrier. Isn't that right ?
- rdolishny, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Exactly.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2why is it illegal to have an iphone in hong kong??
- OpCzar, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Woah, you're right. I smell a conspiracy.
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1I agree.
- eschompthis, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1yeah too bad they forgot the "penalty charge" if you don't return the device back
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1@jrwr,
Actually I was planning to buy an unlocked/SIM Free iPhone on the internet to make it work with my Rogers plan that I currently have with my Motorola phone. I'm sure policies are not the same for Rogers, but I'll definitely check in store to upgrade my phone.. The only problem in Canada w/ Rogers & Fido: the price of voice/data plans. Pricey as hell. Anyways thanks for reminding us that there are still options with our phone carrier. - pirateandy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1that would be my guess, but we won't know till the 11th
- nik289, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1soooooooo doing this -
- EverydayCrap, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Yep, since any iPhone you get from AT&T would be locked to their network. Unlocking won't be hard though since the 2.0 OS has already been unlocked in testing by several hacking groups.
- Steinr, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1same way as before... the beta was already unlocked.
- MavRevMatt, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1So cheap Gizmodo. The MacBreak Weekly guys came up with this on this weeks podcast.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -3/+4If you buy an iPhone with at&t contract and your friend wants one too but with t-mobile or whatever this is how it works: go buy an iPhone with contract for you and "lose" it after a few days, sell it to your friend, then go tell at&t you lost your iPhone and that you buy a new one with the same phone number and under the same contract.
- flamov, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Probably...
- netneutrality, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1I don't see why AT&T should get money for nothing. Just buy a different phone and screw the effing iPhone.
