- spambully, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33Love him or hate him, he's done a helluva job.
- forgiste, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17...I believe you're referring to every product that Microsoft has successfully released.
Just think of Windows. Microsoft wouldn't be around today if they hadn't successfully licensed a non-existent DOS to IBM. - Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I second that, with reservations. The iPod certainly helped, but for sure, it was the iMac that was the first of the many items that began with "i". In terms of chronological order, the iMac came first and did a lot early on to save Apple, but the iPod is what is really helping Apple swing back into things; without the iPod, I don't think there would have been nearly as many switchers.
I'd rank the Apple-saving elements in this order (importance, not chronology):
MacOS X
Apple retail stores
iPod - wilhoitm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14That is exactly what Windows is, except the idiots are even more gullible!
- marcushe, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17so, i guess any successful product is only sold to idiots in your view.
- eyreka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'd really like to say the 'gullible idiots' are those who insist on sticking with MS-Windows but have to admit Windows does have its place -- though I'm more and more wondering where that place is.
- Anechoic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Don't mean LICENSED an amazing product."
They didn't license the iPod - they licensed an embedded platform (by PortalPlayer), but they did the hardware engineering (1.8-inch harddrive, lithium-ion battery, cache), industrial design (incl scroll wheel), UI, and client software (iTunes) themselves. They didn't invent the mp3 player, but they certainly did "create" the iPod. - chrisrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7*waits anxiously to point out inaccuracies*
- firepowered, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Alot will agree, aot will disagree.
But the iPod did save the Apple brand. Becasue of the iPod people now know what "Apple" is.
And now people are aware they make computers (too)! - Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's not just the iPod: it's the iPod in combination with Apple retail stores. The iPod lures the consumer in, giving the store a chance to show off the Mac; on account of this dynamic, many PC users visiting the Apple store have switched.
- marcushe, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Oi Vey:
THE iPOD DID NOT SAVE APPLE, THE iMAC DID. - chroko, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8If the iPod saved Apple, Windows saved the iPod. Really. Hear me out:
The iPod was still a tiny niche player before Apple decided... to the horror of Apple fans - make the iPod work on Windows. Nobody else had full control of an online music store, software and hardware. The Windows-tethered hardware player market was primed and ready for such a product.
So Apple was in the wrong place (Windows) at the right time (the age of downloaded music), with the right product (the iPod) - and that trifecta cornered the market. - Anechoic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"By doing this, they showed that they had confidence in Apple, and that they thought that Apple was a good investment."
It wasn't so much as showing confidence in Apple (although that was the publicized reason), as it was part of a settlement (including a large cash payoff) to avoid a massive patent infringement lawsuit. See http://tinyurl.com/ya2beu for some background:
"Apple demanded $1.2 billion from Microsoft for alleged patent infringements...
The negotiations that resulted led to a strategic agreement between the two companies in August 1997, one part of which called for Microsoft to invest $150 million in Apple and for Apple to install Microsoft's Internet Explorer as the default Web browser for its customers... As part of his videotaped deposition, however, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Bill Gates testified repeatedly that his primary goal was to resolve the patent issues with Apple and obtain a patent cross license." - heaintheavy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10One word: brilliant.
- KillerX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Windows users?
- iching, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I will watch this, but lately the discovery channel has really sucked with their lineup that consists of shows like What Not to Wear, A Wedding Story, Trading Spaces, and Take Home Chef.
I would even watch one on Bill Gates, Robert Metcalfe and others in a series of programs on "the history of the computer".
More real Science/ Math and engineering programs please and less mindless crap. - Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4it may not have "saved" Apple but it certainly made it a hell of a lot more successful than any of their other products.
- brianphan247, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4 PLEASE
PLEASE, SOMEBODY PLEASE POST A LINK TO THE VIDEO OR TORRENT FOR THIS SHOW (EPISODE).
Thanks. - DigDugDigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The iMac was the first Apple product of late that really had people buzzing about it (before the iPod). People weren't raving about Mac OS 8, everyone was talking about the shiny new all-in-one computer that was made by Apple. From there Apple built up some steam and released Mac OS X, the iPod, and a bunch of other things. The iPod got people really talking about Apple again (like the iMac) and I'm interested to see what they have in store for us in the future.
But yeah... I think the iMac saved Apple, the iPod gave them a nice boost but the iMac I think was the product that saved them first.
Maybe the 'iPhone' will be just as revolutionary, maybe not... but I'm still interested in it. - kethraal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Bill Gates gave a crap ton of money to pull Apple back up when it had both legs in the grave. Another good reason for the Mac zealots to hate Bill Gates."
Sigh... not quite. Microsoft made a large stock purchase in Apple. (Please note that a stock purchase is not the same as handing Jobs a bag of cash.) By doing this, they showed that they had confidence in Apple, and that they thought that Apple was a good investment.
As it turned out, they were right -- Microsoft made a good deal of money when they later sold the stock back to Apple. Microsoft did help Apple, but it wasn't "giving a crap ton of money to pull Apple back up". I'm glad you know this piece of trivia, but it would be greatly appreciated if you didn't try and twist words. - rtilford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2site is broken now :(
- rajid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would like to see this but, unfortunately, by the time I got back home to program my replaytv, it was just ending, and it appears as though Discovery is only airing it once. Does anyone know where I could possibly get a copy on the net? Maybe it'll be on youtube later?
- mmzplanet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@iching
Ummm..... sounds more like a TLC lineup than a Discovery one. - rajid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry, I was confused. It's coming on tormorrow. Holidays screw up my idea of what day it is. :(
- cbergeron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Check out the cover of "Time" Magazine August 18th, 1997. They have the story of Microsoft buying Apple shares.
http://www.time.com/time/covers/0,16641,19970818,00.html
How ironic. ;)
I have the original issue. Maybe someday I will put it on eBay. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@chroko:
I think that anyone that doesn't agree with that is delusional. Heck, I thought that was already common knowledge. - MBX1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2put it on video.google or torrent and let us know when it's up,
thanks a lot - easy4lif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope there's a bittorrant released cause I'm going to be at work when this airs and i really want to see this

>MacOS X Apple retail stores iPod
its a myth that apple almost went out of business. ya, during the non-jobs years the management made a mess of things.... but when people make the claim that apple almost died they are assuming that everyone was going to bail on apple and buy windows. i was never tempted to buy a PC and start using windows. there are millions like me. even during the down years apple still made a better product than any other manufacturer. so... the predictions of apples impending doom were never real. - NinjaNoodles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hmm, I don't have a way to watch this. Damn. But, I'm interested enough in this one that in order to ensure I get to see it, although I'm pretty sure It'll be up on Google video, YouTube and/or a torrent link will be available, to be 100% sure I get to see this in it's entirety I'm offering to pay $10 thru PayPal to whoever feels like recording it and sending it to me via usendit.com or something like that, whatever file format is fine. For $10, 800x600 and maybe in HD would be nice ;) I hope this isn't considered illegal. ;) Ok, so if you are interested in making an easy $10 and have PayPal leave me a voice mail on my Private Phone @ 214-231-6461 As soon as someone offers to do it, I'll post a follow up comment to update that someone already volunteered and got the $10. I'll even pay upfront and trust you'll send me the link when it's ready. Merry Christmas.
- mantis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1got it locked into the ReplayTV right after American Chopper one of my favs....8-)
- PaulLev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even if you had missed it, everything does go up on YouTube sooner or even sooner...
- tablehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Re: "even during the down years apple still made a better product than any other manufacturer."
Reminds me of the key scene in Pirates of Silicon Valley:
Jobs: "Go ahead and copy of us. We'll still do it better than you."
Gates: "You just don't get it, do you. That does not matter."
- imactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes!! please, someone have this?
- skemez1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very well put Anechoic!
- PabloMac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Windoze Usees.
- Nyfrin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The show the op is referring to is "The Inside Story Of..." that airs at 12:00pm on 12/27.
- Yebot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It would appear that this video has finally made it to .torrent.
http://www.mininova.org/tor/535142 - starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1honestly, i think microsoft had more to do with it than anything. apple has in general always delivered a superior product... products. jobs just knew what to do when microsoft gave him an opening.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"Love him or hate him, he's done a helluva job"
You misspelled Jobs ;) - ElumEnopee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Don't mean LICENSED an amazing product. It's common knowledge that Apple didn't INVENT the iPod, although they were smart enough to see the potential in the technology.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0
That's odd, I had you figured for a Masterpiece Theater type of person rather than American Chopper. - ccaazz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1another story involving the ipod - the 3rd or 4th today? i lost count...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3
The inside story of the iPod? So does this mean Discovery will be doing a 1 hour episode on how iPods are assembled by minors in a Chinese sweat shop? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2
I thought the iPhone saved Apple? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0>Just think of Windows. Microsoft wouldn't be around today if they hadn't successfully licensed a non-existent DOS to IBM.
And humans would not be around today if the dinosaurs were not made extinct by a meteorite. I'm sure you get the point... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2
I just watched it. They credit Steve Wozniak as the creator of the iPod. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Nobody cares.
- Puttockc, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1yes we must torrent this
If someone finds a really good one post the torrent up here
