Did the iPhone Get Smaller? // pic
i17.tinypic.com — While browsing through the new Apple website, I noticed that the iPhone, in comparison to the hand model, seems to have gotten much smaller since the original picture of the device. Here's a side-by-side comparison of the original iPhone picture and the current one.
- 2073 diggs
- digg it
- sepultura, on 10/11/2007, -14/+115I'm wondering, did Apple actually reduce the size of the device since January or are they just trying to make it seem smaller? Maybe people were complaining about the size? I have no idea.
- jd33, on 10/11/2007, -31/+196Could it just be the difference between a man holding it, and a woman holding it, that's making it appear smaller?
- Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -14/+99Guys it's just that this new guy has a bigger hand, a quick check of the phones specs will tell you they haven't changed. I really thought 'André the Giant' had passed though.
- sepultura, on 10/11/2007, -19/+53Yeah, well it's possible that they simply changed the hand model. But why? Isn't it kind of dishonest to try to make it "look" smaller than it actually is? I could be wrong.
- swimmingbird67, on 10/11/2007, -11/+5it looks bigger in the ads then it does in the current picture of the iPhone.
- InsultComedy, on 10/11/2007, -17/+14It's obvious that the dude is squeazing it like an orange. It's called flexi-screen.
- iashraf, on 10/11/2007, -5/+44It definitely looks fatter and smaller in length than the original. The hand if obviously different as it is fatter but looking at the actual device itself, it looks smaller.
- donwilson2, on 10/11/2007, -10/+64Waiting for conference video.....

waiting.........
waiting.................. - dhbanes, on 10/11/2007, -16/+1"iPhone is a widescreen iPod with touch controls that lets you enjoy all your content — including music, audiobooks, videos, TV shows, and movies — on a beautiful 3.5-inch widescreen display. It also lets you sync your content from the iTunes library on your PC or Mac. And then you can access it all with just the touch of a finger."

Yeah. But Apple is a company, after all, I wouldn't put it past them. - alwaysmc2, on 10/11/2007, -6/+111"Yeah. But Apple is a company, after all, I wouldn't put it past them."
Okay, I call BS. Everyone knows that Apple loves, LOVES it's customers
...' money.
:) - gmarks, on 10/11/2007, -4/+120Maybe you just got bigger...
- funkychikensays, on 10/11/2007, -4/+30the image is just stretched in the new one..
look at the icons - slythfox, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2Obviously the hand shrunk. Duh!
- tecknoplasma, on 10/11/2007, -3/+25Why are we comparing two pictures?...
What are the old specs and the new specs? - lucidapathy, on 10/11/2007, -12/+12Using photoshop I resized the phone held by the woman. Height wise they look exactly the same, but when you increase size proportionally the OLD version actually looks a bit smaller (width). So, either way the answer is no. It's not smaller.
*edit*

http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/7413/iphonejc9.jpg - james2die4, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15Small is the new big.(?)
- Alexx3k, on 10/11/2007, -13/+8I don't know how apple get away with photoshopping their products so much. On the new MacBook Pro images on the new site the screen is also photoshopped to have a larger screen area / thinner bezel, (the photo with the green landscapes, look how thin the top bezel is). They've been doing it subtally for ages, but recently they're physically changing the size and scale of things, heh.
- Sblader5, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3look at the distance between the 3 row of buttons and the bottom buttons. It seems quite a bit smaller now.
- Scogras, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4Not to dis you guys but isn't this kind of a childish debate, I want to see how the device functions before I start Criticizing the size!
- mightyjlr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17@alexx3k
The new MacBook Pros have a smaller bezel. Not a Photoshop. - Ratking, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5@TechnoPlasma
No old specs were released. PS. Check out the actual iPhone page. This pic looks modified to me. BURIED - INACCURATE! - Stormen, on 10/11/2007, -5/+16Nope, it's not smaller... It's just an error, from resizing the image:
http://digg.com/apple/No_the_iPhone_HASN_T_gotten_any_smaller_PIC - dustyshadow, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6"Why are we comparing two pictures?...
What are the old specs and the new specs?"
Because it's obvious that this is deceptive advertising. - Squar3d, on 10/11/2007, -9/+26Size definitely changed. I cut out both pictures of the iPhone, and first scaled them until the heights were the same. You can see that the width is different. In the next, I scaled the width to be the same. You can see the heights are different.
Widths scaled to equal each other:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c26/tunacubes/ipod-1.jpg - pixelsoup, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13It's a Phostoshop hack job. The new iPhone image has been squashed. As funkychikensays (said) look at the icons. They're not square anymore.
- tw0bit, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6http://www.flickr.com/photos/tw0bit/541630525/ a little different...
- hudson99, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12"Isn't it kind of dishonest to try to make it "look" smaller than it actually is?"
Have you ever seen a cheeseburger that looked anything like the photos they use at McDonalds?
Have you ever seen a 17" monitor with 17" of viewable screen?
How many times have you had the "World's Best" cup of coffee? Was it even any good?
It's called advertising. You usually have 2 options: "kind of dishonest" or "flat out lies" - unfinite, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2It isn't a photo of the iPhone. They just insert a vector image of the it into a picture of a hand. The way the person happens to be holding their hand didn't line up with the larger scaled image, so they just shrunk it to fit. It would look stupid it it were bigger, it would be cutting into the hand.
As for the height being skewed. I blame that on the idiots working at apple that don't know to keep the proportions the same ( by holding Shift or Ctrl or that funky option button thing)
Quit getting so excited over stupid things. - DarkHorizon5, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9"Why has the size of the egg changed?
It hasn't - you've just grown up!" (Cadbury) - gamebittk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Smaller screen?
- jcruzlara, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I think they just needed a picture with the AT&T on the phone replacing Cingular.
- Wolfie351, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@ Scogras
Size has a LOT to do with how a device is perceived, especially a portable product. I don't care how functional something is, if it's too big for my pocket I'm not going to bring it with me. If size doesn't matter, we'd all be carrying around laptops 24/7 - krunk4ever, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1The picture on the left is squished (vertically) to make it look shorter. If you compare individual sections, it doesn't look like there's any change at all, unless they decided to squish the icons.
- Robotsu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I don't know.. It could be anything:
The first picture was a prototype whose size has since changed
The first (or second, even) picture was photoshop-ped in and not actually to scale.
The hand holding the phone is simply bigger for the second, and conversely smaller for the first image.
What I -DO- know is that this has no impact on whether I will or will not but the iPhone, but it's interesting to see that the buzz around the product is still so strong that an image discrepancy will get to the front page of Digg like this :D (WRT iPhone: looks great, hope to afford it) - RobynG7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The phone is actually the same size. Look at where the top of it lines up compared to the tip of the fingernail, and the bottom of it compared to the bottom of the thumb.
In the new photo, the guy's hand is a lot more chubby, making the phone seems smaller. But really it's the same size. - zybch, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Its still far too wide!
- b33x, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0thats what she said!
oh crap... no.. - kilikogo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1You know, why do you people lap something up simply because it has apple brand name on it? Seriously, there have been PDAs that could do this for years now, but when apple makes one "Oh it's the bestest thing ever!". Sheeple, I say.....
- collective, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I agree, the new hand model is simply male and fatter. perhaps George Costanza?
- robz0r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Replace iPhone with Penis and re-read everything above me.
This conversation just got a whole lot.... - Alexx3k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@mightyjlr, through the power of digg I managed to get dugg down - but anyway, the bezel is exactly the same: it is NOT thinner, this is photoshop. I have an older macbook pro and someone I work with has the brand new LCD one; the casing is EXACTLY the same, not a single tweak.
That is the exact reason I wonder why apple manage to get away wih photoshop so much.
- football16121, on 10/11/2007, -63/+4I was thinking the same thing ?????
- Ricapar, on 10/11/2007, -15/+56You made a statement. You did not ask a question. WHY did you put question marks (several of them!) after your statement?
Things like that irk me. - silver2k, on 10/11/2007, -10/+50Yeah, it irks me too ?????
- cfazzini, on 10/11/2007, -15/+137I'm Ron Burgundy?
- gurp13, on 10/11/2007, -5/+28Go **** yourself, San Diego.
- KennMac, on 10/11/2007, -5/+19Goddamn it, who put a question mark on the teleprompter?
- RogerRabbit, on 10/11/2007, -12/+1you could be emphasizing the I. As in questioning weather he was the one in question. but whatever.
- KennMac, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12@rogerrabbit
Never question the weather.
- Ricapar, on 10/11/2007, -15/+56You made a statement. You did not ask a question. WHY did you put question marks (several of them!) after your statement?
- bradwilki, on 10/11/2007, -16/+11Does making it smaller maker it any cheaper??
Probably not.
I don't care what the price of Leopard is though, It looks stupendously good. - bradwilki, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I wouldn't think that to be a problem it would just mean the keyboard would just take up more of the screen. Remember it hasn't lost any width.
- doc99, on 10/11/2007, -9/+7http://www.apple.com/iphone/technology/specs.html does that help?! it has dimesions.
- RJNavarrete, on 10/11/2007, -12/+1Why, oh why are we screaming questions?!
- gurp13, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Loud noises!
- KennMac, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7I love lamp.
- seventoes, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Wow whats up with all the anchorman references? I love it!
- reedjohnson, on 10/11/2007, -8/+11Same dimensions as before just a much BIGGER HAND!
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 08/11/2008, -5/+95The physical device has different proportions between the two pictures. One is long and slender, the other is shorter and therefore squatter.
Looking at the specs and the pictures, it appears as though the one on the left of the picture with this article is stretched horizontally. Notice that the buttons are no longer square, etc.
So, someone resized this image improperly (forgot their shift key in photoshop, hehe), and the iPhone is still the same size and proportions it has always been.
Nothing to see here. :) - lesty420, on 10/11/2007, -9/+5Aspect ratio messed up maybe?
- zenerdiode, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10George Costanza burned his hands on an iron after the first shoot, hence the switch to another model with bigger hands. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
- karrock, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree with excalpius... The aspect ratio of the newer "wider, squatter" iPhone looks distorted. When I look at the iPhone website on my browser, it shows no such dimensional oddities like the rectangular icons/buttons. Maybe the browser screenshot was taken at some strange non-native resolution?
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 08/11/2008, -5/+95The physical device has different proportions between the two pictures. One is long and slender, the other is shorter and therefore squatter.
- frieddonuts, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15They're using a very well-endowed hand model to make the device seem smaller.
- Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -17/+5Please keep your sexual orientation to yourself.
- so1omon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I'm not sure what penis size has to do with the iPhone...
- prowdtobebrown, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Isn't it obvious? The iPhone looks smaller in the hands of those with large members. Those with 14 inch "mega-*****" make it look no bigger than your average USB thumbdrive.
- hudson99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@so1omon - What's the mystery?
Marketing 101: Owning cool stuff makes guys feel like they have bigger dicks - EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Is that an iPhone in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?
- nycdigginit, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Blame the ad agency...
- iStunT, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2maybe this means the battery life will be better. /sarcasm
- RJNavarrete, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1Thanks for letting me know when your sarcasm ended.
- morcheeba, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20I've got big hands. I've been thinking of starting a modeling company with someone who has small hands -- I'll do the electronic gadgets; they'll do the diamond jewelry.
- dheaddy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4It's just a dude with an abnormally large hand
- chrisutley, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3"No, you just got bigger."
That's what she said.
- chrisutley, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3"No, you just got bigger."
- bakerster, on 10/11/2007, -22/+53iPhone = Same
Hand = Bigger
Your Brain = Smaller- rauz, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3You = wrong.
- cbabraham, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7WRONG, did you not see the side by side comparisons? Those phones in the picture are different dimensions, no question about it.
- MalDON, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Or is it just a model? Either way I could care less. I do find it funny though.
- BigErn, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Its a difference in the pictures, not the size of the device. Mystery solved + story buried
- BumpMan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3There is a big difference here. I just superimposed the old on top of the new and the new picture's iPhone is way fatter. Or shorter whichever you prefer. The proportions are way off.
- clogger3030, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Hey! Someone discovered advertising today!
- nutcase, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4Those folks at Apple really had a bad day.
The WWDC was crap.
There were all kinds of issues with their new site (and they used the dojo js library-- yuck).
They didn't update the Mac Minis or Imacs.
Their App solution for the iPhone was kinda stupid, you have to be online to use the app?
ciao- noahhoward, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5WWDC is a much longer event than the Keynote.
Haven't seen any issues with their site, check your browser settings.
WWDC is a developer convention, not a hardware convention, the iMacs weren't relavent, the rumor sites were wrong, not Apples problem.
No you probably don't need to be online to use them, they run on the phone, the app solution was a neat way to resolve the problem.
- noahhoward, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5WWDC is a much longer event than the Keynote.
- itsjos, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1humm... apple is clever
- thepolkapunk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23If you go to the actual apple website http://www.apple.com/iphone/ the phone and the hand holding it don't look as wide. Perhaps someone is doing so image trickery and pushing it to digg?
- sTiVo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12@ZedX
You are absolutely right. The actual website shows an iPhone that looks the same as it ever did. The linked photo has been widened. - rauz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Confirmed.
Scaled to the same width it's easy to spot, should've thought of that from the start.
http://i10.tinypic.com/6h6n87s.jpg - fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Wow, that is actually a pretty big difference. Sepultura, how do you plead to these charges?
- hokkos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3That entry is totally inaccurate
- bradleyland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4thepolkanut is right.
BURY this thing INACCURATE

...not if he's holding it.- chrisutley, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5"...not if he's holding it."
That is also what she said. - imikedaman, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Or this girl:
http://www.worth1000.com/entries/136500/136593yEgD_w.gif
- chrisutley, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5"...not if he's holding it."
- break99, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2Anything with the word "iPhone" will be buried as lame for that's exactly what it is.
I really don't understand the fanboy masturbation over a phone with the technology of a 2001 nokia.. Mac fanboys really don't know jack about technology... - cheddarbek, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Same size, different hand
- SwabTheDeck, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3No, you just got bigger.
- chrisutley, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Why don't you look at the dimensions they originally published and compare them to the shipping product at the end of the month, Columbo?
- mccrappy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0The old image is obviously stretched vertically, the hand is totally out of proportion.
- Leofan7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well, it did look smaller, but the had looked almost unaturally pudgy. I dugg it just because it's freaky.
- returnofajedi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Or it could be the res of the pic. Anyone think of that???
- ZedX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8No, whoever took a screenshot of the "new" picture has the wrong aspect ratio. Don't believe me, look at this photo, then go to the real photo. http://www.apple.com/iphone
- shoebappa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Yes, it's sad that this has so many diggs because it's not even apples mistake, just a really really lame resized screenshot. They could have at least scaled just the phone and not the icons and text to. But I guess that just makes it all the more sad that this made the homepage...
- demonotaku, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22Please, bury this story. It's diggtardery at it's worse.
- diagonalfish, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11You're one to talk, my friend. Perhaps you meant 'worst'? :)
- mpeters13, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I think this is the best comment ever. Dugg for use of word "diggtardery"
- CptBuck, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I resized the two images so that the phones matched in size, you will see that nothing looks distorted, so i'm guessing it is just an optical illusion making the phone look smaller. http://www.flickr.com/photos/8824029@N07/541574379/
- Myonosken, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If I'm honest, the iPhone looks like a brilliant piece of kit, but do we need people posting "theories" all the time? Last week we had one which was musing over a "new app" because the icons had moved across by one.
Sure be extremely excited and want one, I know I do, but don't post something to Digg unless you have some actual evidence- not just a guy with a bigger hand than last time.- zoom1928, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Kit? Wow, you really are a terrible troll. Do you really think anyone believes the trolls that have been claiming that the iPhone isn't a complete product? Of course it is a working product. It is not a kit that the consumer has to put together.
- Myonosken, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1What the *****? I'm thinking you're the retard here. Who the hell mentioned putting it together?
- macusernick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1anyone notice how the look of the speaker has changed between the two pics?
- damnyooneek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1no the hand got bigger
- thegoodsteer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1This is no conspiracy, fellow diggers.
Just relax and finally buy one on the 29th. It's almost over, we've come a long way. - Gillz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Is the iPhone getting smalled?
No, your hands are just getting bigger. - runwithmatches, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2im pretty sure its just the angle of the picture.
- ShuttleDisaster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Here are two screenshots I took from the original keynote in January (Steve is holding it):

- vcleniuk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1iPhone shrinkage...
- dominiccarr, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Dude. get a life.
- chuckler3, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1The iPhone hasn't changed sizes.. i'm not even sure the hand holding it has changed sizes. at first this is what i had thought had happened... switch a small woman's hand with a larger one, easy marketing. But then i noticed how the way the hand is holding it has changed. check it out.. put it in your mouth, chew on it, soak it in. It's delicious.
- sunshinemonster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3http://www.apple.com/iphone/
No, it didn't get smaller, someone altered the image. I wouldn't want it to get smaller, I'm considering buying one and it looks nice all elongated. - Ibox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1http://www.apple.com/iphone/ads/
pics from apple web. they're not showing it in this ratio - chaskell, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3It looks like it got bigger to me.
Pretty simple. Drew the cross to fit the new pic and then scaled it to the second pic, keeping the ratio the same, and it doesn't fit.
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/317/6617rlkix2.jpg - meatball1989, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0maybe a smaller screen would increase the battery life....
- nates, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0If you scale the smaller image, it has a slightly narrower profile than the other phone. Could be just a model with bigger hands, but it does look like it got smaller/narrower.
- Mpulse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It also looks like the person is holding the phone in a slightly different position. In the "bigger" iPhone picture, the person is holding it with the bottom of his/her palm facing away from the camera. In the "smaller" picture, the bottom of the person's palm is closer to the camera. The result is a larger looking hand and a smaller looking phone.
- combovercool, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6To beat a dead Seinfeld horse "She had man hands."
- gurp13, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Hey, you know what they say about guys with big hands...
- alexkillby, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I think the hand is just fatter.
