- ImadtheApplefan, on 07/02/2008, -4/+46Damn, and I thought us Canadians had it bad. It's time for a world wide strike against mobile carriers! *Runs around like zoidberg* That really is a ***** plan though.
- ross., on 07/02/2008, -0/+26Just wait until Australian carriers release pricing details, we'll suck harder than your ex-girlfriend!
(yeh we're still waiting for 1/8th of ***** information from our telcos!) - whazup911, on 07/03/2008, -8/+31Seriously WTF DENMARK? You can have ONE freakin highspeed celluar tower and it will cover your entire country, get with it already!
- mcduck, on 07/03/2008, -0/+23In Norway we get these plans;

No iPhone for me, that's for sure. - znicket, on 07/02/2008, -1/+17I suspect that the carrier is somewhat unaware of the game changing nature of the iPhone. According to their statements they think that the iPhone user only uses 10x more data than the average user. To their knowledge the average joe uses 15mb per month on his Nokia phone so they think the iPhone will use 10x that.
Boggles the mind. - Daniel591992, on 07/02/2008, -0/+14That's insane. It's amazing how different the plans vary by country. Is there any reason why Denmark's plan sucks so much or is it just the telephone company screwing the customers?
- HallEffected, on 07/03/2008, -0/+12you don't watch any videos?
- madmate, on 07/03/2008, -1/+7Buried as inaccurate, Norway is way worse.
- giz0r, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6Heh ... I'm danish AND i work for Telia :P I don't think my bosses will be happy to see this hehe.
- locodude, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6I still think Telia Swedens plans suck ass. Good going Telia, you single-handedly killed the iPhone on the Scandinavian market. I hope you get raped by a hundred syphellitic camels you money-hungry douchebags.
- znicket, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6At least you have the option, with more expense, to have a 1 gb data package.
- yuanzhoulu, on 07/03/2008, -1/+7cell phone use in europe is in general, horribly expensive and unlimited plans of anything are hard to find.
not to mention europe's countries are small, so the moment you travel across borders just to have fun you'll get hit with charges big time. there still exists NO unlimited europe-wide data-plan which i think people are in dire need of, especially given that travelling across borders is easy and cheap, so people do it for both fun and business, except cell phone use sucks while on such trips.
last time i worked in germany, listening to voicemail cost 50 cents/minute, getting a call while i was roaming in france and NOT answering it cost me double because the call was being routed to france (one roaming charge) and back to germany (another roaming charge) for the voicemail machine to get it. yeah, i know, they could do it more efficiently, but this way they make 2.50 euros/minute off me for whatever spam someone left on my voicemail. sending SMS was 1 euro EACH while roaming. great, isn't it :)
the EU is trying to institute regulation on mobile phone costs. i don't know if it passed yet or not. even if they do, it's still a bit steep compared to in the states or in most of asia. also, i wonder if switzerland (not part of EU) will reduce their costs too just to be nice.
the only two good things about european cell phone use are (1) that coverage is fantabulous. being on top of mountains in the arctic wilderness of sweden or hiking through difficult slopes in the alps or being in the middle of ancient ruins, i always got 3-5 bars of reception and rarely less. (2) that cell phones and plans are generally separate entities, and that's the way things SHOULD be. you can walk into a T-Mobile Deutschland store and purchase a plan and a simcard without ever showing them the phone you have, and walk home with the simcard. in the USA the geese at the store can technically do this but won't let you for some utterly stupid reason. - znicket, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5What are they talking about inside the company though? Do they feel the customers are being unreasonable?
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5It's one of the following:
1. They really believe that the 300 MB really is plenty enough (which, then again wouldn't surprise me, i mean, take a look at their 3G coverage...)
2. They know plenty well that 300MB is not near enough for the average iPhone user and they can't wait for the millions to roll in when people go over... - inactive, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6It seems Telia Denmark is totally argument resistant in this case.
Telia Sweden changed their plans to something more reasonable, however Telia Denmark refuses to change anything.
There is only one thing to do in this case; DON'T BUY THE IPHONE AT TELIA DENMARK! That is the only way we can tell them, that we wont take this *****. - davidrools, on 07/03/2008, -2/+7Might this have an effect on their status as the Happiest Country in the World?
(ref: http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/07/02/nations.happi ... - LinuxGalore, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5The low monthly data rates dont surprise me at all. Most Telco's are terrified of VoIP being used with handsets on their network because it reduces the amount of charges they can apply to each customer. If you make a VoIP call or someone makes one to you they cant charge their customers a highly inflated (4000%) internetwork charge so they restrict your data plan but not your minutes even if you pay more for the plan. The fact you may want to surf youtube doesnt enter their brains because they are stuck in the 1950's
- nurriz, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4Yes. An expensive dataplan for a phone affects our combined happiness...
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4"Things just cost more and those prices are not insane here"
Way to roll over and accept being shafted. Spineless and broke is no way to go through life, son. - HallEffected, on 07/03/2008, -1/+5no nothing can affect the unjustified smug feeling apple users have 24/7
- bj00rn, on 07/03/2008, -2/+6Inaccurate.
Norway is even worse. More than $80 per month for 100MB, 100min, 100SMS. I doubt any plan in the world can beat that, unfortunately.
For some very odd reason Norway has been going from being among the best in class to the worst in class in just a few years. It's just sad. - znicket, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4Hold on... you think Apple is deciding carrier prices? Heck no. Apple gets a full price from the carrier, the carrier then decides how much to charge the final customer. Most carriers decide to subsidize the phone and get money back from the customer call charges.
Apple is not getting anything from the call charges - that only applied in the beginning with AT&T, no longer. - LinuxGalore, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4I would wait a while before buying an iPhone, This always happens with new "me too" handsets, the Telco's only offer "MEGGA BUTT SHAFT!!" contracts that lock you in for 2 years. Wait 3 months and you will get a more normal plan. Apple should really be careful or a nice marketing idea may turn into a turd thanks to the telco's they have hooked up with.
- MikeSetera, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4After reading this I think we should take the board of directors of T-Mobile (Netherlands) out for a round of electroshock.
- ggbs, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3this is due to the 6month contract..
- Weakener, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3In Norway the company Netcom is even worse:
https://netcom.no/iphone.html
If you get the most expensive plan called iTalk Large which costs 1099NKR ($216) pr month (!!) you get 1000 minutes, 1000 sms and 1000mb of data. Thats what I call insane. - prgmctan, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3I can finish in 2 seconds
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3it's probably watching those emo girls dance and kiss each other. yea i have the same problem, i usually spend about 3 hours a day watching hot emo girls dance and kiss each other on youtube a day. it's just soooo good
- DanielNielsen, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Well looks like im not getting one after all, ***** YOU TELIA!!!
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Running around like Zoidberg is usually the solution to all my problems.
a...WOOB-WOOOB-WOOB-WOOB... - YancyFryJr, on 07/13/2008, -0/+3Holy Christ. It's bad enough to be on AT&T, but to pay that much for it? Ugh.
- MEOase, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4I think Australia has a good chance to "win" this title. At present, with all other mobiles, Telstra data costs are astronomical: (but they may change them for the iphone)
a $79 plan gets you 5 MB of data in addition to the usual calls and messages. If you should exceed your 5MB in the month, excess data is charged at $2 per MB.
There is of course the option of a browser pack, which is chargted on top of your monthly plan
"Occasional Users" pay $5 and get 5MB
"Frequent Users" pay $10 and get 20MB
"Heavy Users" pay $29 and get a whopping 80MB
(all excess charged at $1.00 per MB)
Info from: http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/services/mobilemo ... - gpthestar, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Yada yada yada - if you look at the small print in any of the European contracts it says unlimited data - then additional to that somthing like 500Mb or 300Mb fair use limit.
How the f**k can that be unlimited and how do they get away with advertising unlimited when it is anything but????
i agree with ImadtheApplefanImadtheApplefan world wide boycot (pretty impractical though)
HMFFFFF - nurriz, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Lock in is only 6 months in Denmark,
- nurriz, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4@willynilly
You seem to have a perfect grasp of how Denmark is put together... - inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3But one thing in common with all the iPhone plans: THEY'RE AN OFFENSIVE RIP-OFF.
Look at the backlash this time. It's well deserved. I'm not even that interested in the new iPhone anymore. It winds up being a ***** of money for.... GPS.
FORGET the "3G" data rate if that's what you think the big payoff is, because chances are you'll essentially never see good performance, even in major cities. In tests (Ars Tecnica, maybe) between Verizon, Spring, and AT&T high-speed data cards, Verizon kicked ass, Spring had horrible setup but after that kicked ass, and AT&T was basically unusable most of the time.
If anyone has a link to that article, please post it for us. - martin308, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Agreed. I predict we are gonna get bent over by Vodafone NZ :(
- Cile1977, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Just wait till it comes to Croatia - then you will see what is the worst data plan ever :)
- znicket, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Its not really about the prices... its about the 300mb limit on the data plan. With an iPhone you can go through 300mb in half a day. If you want to use the phone for the other 29 days of the month, you are screwed.
- themastersb, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3I'm not your buddy, guy.
- madskjaer, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3I live in Denmark, and I'm planning to buy the iPhone when it comes out. Let me explain why the plan sucks so much.
In Denmark, we have HUGE taxes. Around 25% sales tax, versus the 7% (I think) in the U.S. This makes the iPhone itself a lot more expensive. Second, Telia has the suckies 3G network in the whole country, so they probably expect people to switch over to faster, better, and cheaper plans after the period they have to have the Telia plan. That period is only 6 months (by Danish law), versus two years in the U.S. This explains why the plan is so expensive. As for the 300mb limit - it is outrageous. I don't think Telia understands that I need to browse the internet while I'm on the road, where I don't have Wi-Fi. - znicket, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3I understand they need to recapture the money but why not have at least 1000mb available for download? It wouldn't cost them anything and they would sell a heck of lot more of phones.
Or are you saying that they are banking on selling all those extra gb? - Mannon, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2But luckily Forbrukarombudet is on the case. and will go into talks with Netcom.
Bjørn Erik Thon from Forbrukarombudet:
«You should be unusual interested in owning an iPhone to willingly bind yourselfe to these plans»
Go Forbrukarombudet!!! - dojonz, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Optus already has, and they're better than this.
- bjeanes, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2lachlan, i'll definitely be buying it outright. those optus plans are not as bad as they could be (i.e. generous for optus) but they still aren't that good. i'd rather more data nad less calls. i'll be putting my iphone on my virgin account that gives me a gig of data but only $140 minutes of calls (which is more than I use anyway) for about $45/month. If i need more calls i can always voip it over the data anyway since 1gb will be heaps.
- Guspaz, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Not all that much worse than Canada. Worse in some many ways, better in others.
Denmark: One-year average of $106.50 per month, minimum 6-month contract, 300 minutes, unlimited SMS, 300MB.
Canada: One-year average of $67 per month, minimum 3 year contract, 150 minutes, 75 SMS included, 400MB.
Cheaper, a bit more bandwidth, but less minutes, far less SMS, and a giant 3-year contract.
To be fair, let's add a Rogers plan with a comparable pricing:
Canada: One-year average of $107 per month, minimum 3 year contract, 600 minutes, 200 SMS, 1024MB.
So, for the same price (and I'm including that hidden $6.95 fee in the Canadian price), you get double the minutes, less SMS if you're a heavy user, more bandwidth, but a 3-year contract.
There are also other related differences; Denmark gets unlimited in-network calling (iPhone to iPhone would be free), Canada gets evenings and weekends.
No matter how you slice it, though, that 3-year contract is a killer. - kitsua, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2O2/UK FTW!
£35 ($69) p/m - 600 free minutes - 500 free texts - Unlimited Data - everything else free. - WZot, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2We're not happy to see these plans from your boss either, dude.:-) So guess we're even then.
- mklnz2, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2This isn't half bad compared to New Zealand, oh boy I can't wait for our iPhone plans.
Check the current plans out:
http://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobile-data/mobile-inter ...
Those are just for data, calling plans costs more... - inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2"Wait 3 months and you will get a more normal plan."
Oh really? Because here it is, a YEAR since the iPhone's introduction, and the plans just got WORSE.
So what fantasyland do you live in? -
