- geoken, on 10/10/2007, -43/+218In case anyone was wondering, this is based on a survey of a few thousand people and not on any actual sales numbers.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -16/+88I've just bought a Macbook pro.
Its not only the best laptop I've ever owned, its the best machine.
I think Apple really do give a ***** about design, maybe Dell and the others will too now.
Their current line of machines are just a nightmare, designed to sell bloody Vista, not do a job
for its user.
I know it sounds a bit fanboyish, but the plain fact is Apple make great kit. - BossKey, on 10/10/2007, -14/+76A few more points to take:
1. As long as it's a scientific survey, then it's...scientific.
(i.e., far more credible than an American Idol phone tally)
2. If the same survey has been done in the past giving them a consistent baseline, then the chance is higher that these numbers are correct.
3. If the change is pretty dramatic (which it is), then a huge statistical error would be required for the basic conclusion to be wrong.
In other words, chances are, Apple really is kicking Dell's ass right now. - hobbler, on 10/10/2007, -11/+69I can't explain why, but I just like my mac. Started with an iPod, then a 12" G41ghz iBook, snagged a Macbook Pro as soon as they rolled out. Haven't really looked back, either. I deal with enough MS crap at work, I don't want to go home and deal with the same crap.
- KnIgHtCoM, on 10/10/2007, -50/+88Personally I hate Apple. Not because of their products, because I think they're great (I own a PowerMac G5 and an iPod Video).
What I dislike is the elitist attitude the company cultivates among its users. They're creating a generation of obnoxious fanboys creaming in their pants at anything and everything Apple. - dirtyhand, on 10/10/2007, -11/+43I recently purchased a midrange MacBook... it's possibly the best purchase I have ever made in my life. This is coming from someone that has been using Windows all his life until now.
- kiantech, on 10/10/2007, -21/+51actually, I'm going to be a freshman in college and all my friends, including myself, got a macbook(pro), our reason, to have a pretty computer that can run windows, none of them would have purchased the mac if it did not run windows. So good move moving to intel.
- cthellis, on 10/10/2007, -7/+33Tests of "a few thousand people" are commonly used in market research, polls, and reported as such. They're usually pretty accurate, too. (Though they always list percentage sway.)
Panning it because "it's a survey of a few thousand people" and that alone is foolish... You have to look at the survey methodology to judge if it's an accurate representation of the wider market. - robdazomba, on 10/10/2007, -7/+28The elitist fanboys are a vocal minority. If you look at Mac users with an unbiased eye, you'd see there are just as many fanboys there as there are for anything else.
- cthellis, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22You'll notice that's pretty much the way of most underdog companies. The fanbase is loyal and can be rabid for a good long time, because they LIKE the products, but see them being drowned out by the rest of the market.
Meanwhile, forming an opinion--especially a consumer opinion--based on dumbasses is in itself dumb. Sadly there is ***** on television that drowns out the good shows, but I don't hate my neighbor for watching "The Simple Life," nor do I hate the network for producing what obviously rakes in the cash. Why would I dislike Apple because of some dumbasses? (It is, btw, just the online/on-message-board Apple fans that give them a bad name. 99% of people who own Macs simply own Macs and like them, for whatever their reason. Meanwhile, people on the Internet are *****. Including me. ;-) )
If you think the products are great, then they're still great even if there's a fanboy spewing nonsense about them on Digg. If you'd find owning one to be personally preferable, then why let some schmuck dictate your purchasing decisions? - Username222, on 10/10/2007, -11/+28Well, as long as we are talking about "scientific" surveys, this article talks about apple's lead in customer satisfaction dropping 4.8 percent, just barely holding its lead on its competitors.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=azLotScuVZSg&refer=us - MrOdwin, on 10/10/2007, -6/+23As long as the sample is sufficiently random a lot can be learned from it. The information shouldn't be discarded just because of its source. It's still about the buying habits of real people.
- fugazied, on 10/10/2007, -7/+24Apple gear is nice enough to turn people into fanbois. After getting my first macbook pro recently, I now understand exactly how cool this stuff is. The PC vs Mac debate is pretty stale, both have their place but for me the Mac experience has been so good I'm never using a windows PC for 'work' ever again. This article sure is a piece of crap though...
- inkswamp, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20Macs do have several advantages over Windows in design work. I've done graphic design work on both platforms and can confirm for you that 1) Postscript support on Windows is a joke compared to OS X; 2) fonts tend to go wonky on Windows a lot more often than on OS X; 3) color matching... gah, let's not even go there; 4) design software is invariably geared toward the Mac platform; 5) printing seems to be more consistent on Macs than on Windows (that's not inherently an OS thing, but more likely because design software tends to be more finely-tuned on Macs.); 6) print shops tend to be more Mac-friendly which is an advantage especially when racing against deadlines.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -9/+24I bought my macbook after I bought my iphone, so for whatever that is worth...
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18What constitutes a good deal? While buying the laptop you mentioned (I'm not the least bit interested in doing a comparison myself) might save me some cash now, my time is also worth something to me. Since I prefer OS X over Windows (not saying it's better, just my preference), can I put OS X and all the Mac apps I use on this Dell without having to do modifications? Or when Apple releases a security or OS update can I install it without again having to modify files?
I've been a Mac user for over twenty years. What a Mac looks like doesn't enter into my buying decision. - smacksaw, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18Halo Effect? Is that what it's called when you have to get customer service from people half a world away who know nothing about your culture in regards to fixing problems?
Dell, either you get me speaking to people from North America or we're done. - MrOdwin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15But "Dell takes huge hit in the ChangeWave Alliance Sector (with possible implications elsewhere) as Apple laptop sales soar (again in the ChangeWave Alliance Sector)" just isn't as catchy for a Digg title.
- BossKey, on 10/10/2007, -8/+21Username222, thanks for pointing out that survey, which shows that Apple retains the top spot, and Dell's satisfaction level dropped faster than Apple's. In context, looks like Apple's holding its own there.
- iamnotbatman, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16"I hope you guys enjoy the 500-1000 dollar "apple tax" on your products. Just admit when people buy a mac they buy is solely because of the name and the slick exterior."
No. The OS is superior -- I don't have to worry about viruses or spyware or ***** in my system tray, and I've never had my system crash, even though I don't restart my computer for months on end. I've never had to install drivers for anything - everything works without hassle. Installing programs is easier and has less chance of screwing up your system. The apple developer tools are far superior to anything on pc. I also prefer the gui, though I suppose that is subjective. Finally, I find the underlying unix architecture infinitely useful -- I have my always terminal open. - antitab, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14"I can't explain why, but I just like my mac."
I can.

I could go on... - robdazomba, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14Have you ever worked in the graphic design or publishing industries? The people in that field DO need a Mac. Why? It's not because the hardware or OS is necessarily superior, but because in that industry, the Windows-Mac thing is exactly flipped so all the great stuff is mostly available for Macs. It's 95% Mac out there in the design world. (Don't believe it? Go pick up some industry magazine and see for yourself.) So, most design and publishing software and systems are either Mac-only or Mac-oriented. And no, I'm not talking about Photoshop or QuarkXPress. We're talking all the other stuff out there, the fonts, plug-ins, content systems, drivers and software for various high-end printing and publishing equipment, etc. In the last year, I have overseen the installation of two software systems (one for an imagesetter RIP and one for a design CMS) both of which were Mac-only.
- oobuntu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9are you sure it's not because of the global shortage of LCD screens used in these machines? my dell acc mgr is adding 15 day lead-time to the regular lead time because of problems in getting hold of 1440x900 panels due to a supplier problem.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Right. Because buying something for full price to sell at a loss on eBay two weeks later just makes so much financial sense. If only they could have just returned it to Apple in that same time period and gotten their money back. Oh hold on there...they can. Either your friends are lying or you are.
- cthellis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Right, because everyone knows exactly how to quantitatively analyze their computing experience, the way their car drives (it shifts from 3rd to 4th 0.2 seconds faster!), their stereo (the sound from 12-15dB is much more rich!), their monitor (the 5ms response time is much better than 8ms!), etc.
From the sound of the initial poster, he just purchased a Mac and has had a more enjoyable time using the machine than using Windows elsewhere. Familiarity doesn't even come into play, as he is obviously familiar with both. (Though who knows, work could still be on Windows 98 or something... ;-) )
Other people simply buy a product, like it, and see no reason to switch. (And with computers, it's not like it's a cheap or trivial task to "try the other machine out" in the same fashion. It's not a DVD player, where you're apt to switch brands of one underperforms for some reason, breaks, or is simply seen as lacking in features.) They still may not be able to explain precisely WHY they like it... they just do. And "trend" and "fashion" and "cool" come nowhere into play.
"Liking something" is a good enough reason for people to own anything--and pretty much how most consumers decide first. - coloneltcb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8FTA:
"Apple satisfies. The poll claims 86 percent of those who bought a Mac over the past 90 days report being "Very Satisfied" with their purchase -- by far the highest of any manufacturer."
But regardless of what the article says, you're wrong. - bittermang, on 10/10/2007, -10/+18You guys can "blame" whatever "halo" or Santa Claus or Easter Bunny you want to believe in. Whatever helps you sleep at night.
Just know that some people are figuring out that Windows sucks, and they don't want to ride the Virus Train to Spywareville anymore. They've seen through the Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt; they've realized there is another choice out there. Some of them are giving Linux a shot. Some of them are giving the Mac a shot.
Now we can continue blaming it all on mystery phenomena, "halo effect" product association, and weather balloons which resemble UFOs. Or we can own up and agree as a people, Windows sucks. - Kelmon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Are you suggesting that you are only interested in the price of a computer when you select one? I expect mine to last me at least 3-years so I make sure that it's going to do the job that I need it to. For me that's a Mac and if it'll do what I need without driving me nuts then $500 - $1000 over 3-years is nothing to me. The idea that we're just buying computers because it's got an Apple logo on it is both incorrect and insulting.
- inkswamp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8> I know people who bought Mac's before based on looks and name,
> two weeks later they were back in the box trying to be sold on.
Oh my god! Are you saying someone is putting people in boxes and trying to sell them? It's an outrage! It should be outlawed! - thefirelane, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Yes, if only there were some way of checking eBay for Macs. This magical function could perhaps "search" through eBay listings, looking for what you ask it. Alas, I don't think AI has progressed to such a point yet. We can dream however
- cthellis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I like smooth bottoms on my lap.
- manbearpigm16, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8The Asus G1S has near identical parts as the Macbook Pro (Macbook Pro with the better cpu, but less storage) and the Macbook Pro has the LED screen, longer battery life and weighs less. The Asus is only $100 less, that's the price of iLife. To call the Asus G1S the king of gaming laptops is a joke, you sir have been dugg down.
- nakani, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8The design industry ended up relying on a company who emphasizes good design. Imagine that. Next thing you know, programmers are going to start relying on UNIX!
- ischeinin, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11digg is what its users make it to be. If the users like Apple, what can you do?
- mxcl, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Not to mention it just works a hell of a lot more often than Vista, and somewhat more often than XP.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8sorry.....*even* better products?
- cjwl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The math is that they are losing money to people who don't want to wait.
- nakile, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yeh, the XPS are kind of inflated. On the other hand, most of the Inspirons are fat as hell and heavy. Not really even comparable to Apple's notebooks.
- WhiteIce89, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I'd like to remind that Dell has so many orders right now that it's now on about a month's backlog on the Inspiron notebooks.

Lets see, a guy from macworld reporting that other companies other than apple suffering because of apple's success......no bias there. - Zippo, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9lol, clearly you've never used an ASUS. Outperform? Hardly.
A Macbook is around the same price as a Windows laptop with the same specs and software... so I don't see how a cheap laptop is going to compare. - digital11, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Hear hear!
I got my MBP17" back in March and have never been more tickled with a laptop. My next (home) desktop will likely be a Mac as well. - cosmo7, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Azio, the fact that you are buying a MacBook after steadily posting anti-Apple trolls for so long is astonishing evidence of Apple's domination of the market. I hope your new computer arrives soon.
- cthellis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Those don't have "best"-type values. They're more "necessities"... ;-)
- Kelmon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I. DON'T. CARE. If I was only sensitive to the price of a computer then I'd have bought some cheap as chips laptop and installed Linux. Get this - I hate Windows and love OS X and its applications. User experience to me is everything so I don't care how cheap or powerful a Windows laptop is - it runs Windows and therefore will piss me off like every other Windows system. What part of this don't you understand?
Anyway, what the heck do you care? Are we threatening your little world somehow? - cthellis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5For many quarters so far. And they're not trending upwards.
- daven1986, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9for me it isn't really the kit, but more the OS.
- aknowles5139, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Here's the thing about Dell laptops, and all there computers for that matter. When you look at it, you'll see they have around 400mhz RAM (unlike 667mhz from Apple)... the build quality isn't very nice and when you look at all the extra little details that Apple gets you (sudden motion censor, back light keyboard, ambient censor, etc) You don't get that with Dell. Apple builds there computers with top quality parts. Those come with a price tag. I have 2 Dell laptops and I'm writing on a Dell desktop. Believe me, there crap.
- inkswamp, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7And at -8 diggs, so is your comment.
- BarriedaleNick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I bought a computer to run windows as well but as it wasnt a Mac I saved a bundle of cash.
