- prisoner24601, on 03/17/2009, -0/+1What on earth made them think that obsessing with thinness specifically and exclusively would be appealing? It's a remarkably unremarkable product given the absurd level of hype Dell's been slathering on this. It's simple pixels-per-pound math here:
.34 megapixels/pound for the Macbook Air (3 lb unit / 1280x800 display) for $1799
.26 megapixels/pound for the Adamo (4 bl unit / 1366x768 display) for $1999
Even better though:
.37 megapixels/pound for the Samsung X360 (2.8 lb unit / 1280x800 display) for only $1450 (NewEgg rebate today)
Over a pound lighter and $500 less than the Adamo, and has the gigabit ethernet the Air lacks.
Really what people need to look at is megapixels/pounds/price ratio:
.24 for the Adamo (1366x768 display / 4.0 pounds / $1999)
.47 for the Air (1280x800 display / 3.0 pounds / $1799)
.60 for the X360 (1280x800 display / 2.8 pounds / $1450)
.90 for a used Dell X1 (1280x768 display / 2.5 pounds / $400 on ebay)
It sounds geeky, but I'm sure diggers will get this and I'm surprised it hasn't become a sort of standard shorthand in the industry already. It's like the whole ultra-portable market is begging for a consistent way to compare units from different manufacturers. I'm really into ultra-portables, so I've been using my pixels/pounds/price ratio in a spreadsheet for years to figure out what's the best overall choice. It quickly gets you past the smoke-and-mirrors these guys use to sell into this end of the market. (You know, like teaser ads with supermodels for a couple of weeks before the release of an unremarkable unit while distracting from the fact that it isn't a particularly good overall blend of portability/price by trying to focus your attention on ONE aspect such as thinness.)
