- falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+43Unfortunately Steve Jobs spent his entire fortune on turtlenecks and jeans. Hence his attire at every WWDC.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19@bigvics:
He eventually turned Apple around using NEXTSTEP which he started after being fired at Apple. Right place at the right time? ... no, he's a good computer company CEO. - dashiel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20*****. steve convinced woz to do things that were thought to be impossible at the time. no jobs == no apple I or apple ][. jobs has an uncanny ability to surround himself with exceptionally talented people and an almost unparalleled ability to force them to do their best work. he is a design snob in the extreme and has little trouble telling you what you're doing is crap until it meets his demanding standards.
the guy not only has final approval on everything from the icon for iphoto up to the architectural plans for every apple store, but he actually contributes valuable feedback no matter how large or small the project is.
john sculley, lee iococa, steve balmer, trump, hell even fred anderson have that used car salesman vibe, but jobs is a cut above like gates, buffet and branson. - RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17The kicker is that Lucas wanted $30 million for Pixar before Jobs bargained him down to $10 million.
"Steve Jobs was interested in buying Pixar but not at the price point (30 million) that Lucas wanted for the division. After Jobs rejected the original price Lucas relented and offered the division for a divorce sale price of 10 million."
http://www.applematters.com/index.php/section/comments/how_to_turn_10_million_into_7_billion_a_brief_history_of_pixar/ - wastern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13>>Smart? He was lucky to be in the right place at the right time when Fat Woz did his thing.
lucky?? He may not have built the computer, but he built up Apple, got kicked out, built up NeXT, came back to Apple and took them from a failing company back to the forefront of the tech industry and the model for what a computer should be*. Woz wasn't around for NeXT or the re-birth of Apple
Like him or not he is a brilliant businessman. No one else could have turned Apple around so drastically in such a short period of time.
*evidenced by expose and things taken from apple used in XGL as well as pretty much all of Vista - modsuperstar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Are you kidding me? You do realize the eMachine was the most blatent ripoff of the original iMac? Manufacturers like eMachines just bastardize what Apple is doing and sell it to the PC masses instead of doing their own R and D.
- modsuperstar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11That's pretty stupid thinking. First of all the iMac pretty much saved the Mac platform after Steve Jobs came back to the company, as well as the introduction of OS X from what used to be NeXT. The third thing was the switch to Intel. Apple has made it through many lean times, I don't think they would have ceased to exist had the iPod not come into being. Pixar had really nothing to do with Apple until recently since the sale to Disney and the iTunes partnerships.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+18Smart? He was lucky to be in the right place at the right time when Fat Woz did his thing.
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9your birthday != me caring
j/k happy birthday - mercano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6God Digg is repeating itself.
- Bytor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The best thing that happened is that it was bought by someone who could make a movie company out of Pixar, something that never would have happened with George Jar-Jar Lucas helming the movie projects.
Steve has one talent that many leaders don't. He doesn't over-estimate his own skills. He knows he sucks at writing movie dialog and will hire talented people to do it and then get out of their way. If George kept Pixar it would have went out of business by now. - Gemini25RB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Part of me wants to say "You must be new here."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Smart? He was lucky to be in the right place at the right time when Fat Woz did his thing."
So Jobs was at the right place at the right time for the Apple ][ the Macintosh, Pixar, iMac, and now the iPod. wow those are alot of coincedences..hmmmmm.... - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm sure Bill Gates doesn't bite... Not sure why it would take any astounding level of character to face him... I've heard much darker reports of Jobs' temperament, but who knows how deserved his outbursts might have been...
- jsg7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Is the the sequel to "George Lucas in Love"? Or does that make it a prequel?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnrCnJqjLY8 - RichyFreeway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3***** that was a boring post. NEXT!
- JBSherman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Paycheck to paycheck no. However he sold Pixar for far less than it ended up being worth. However Jobs did oversee the creation of value that allowed Disney to value that same asset at 7 Billion. 700 times more value in 23 years.
- plgonzalez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know... a bunch of yawn'ers today in the Apple section!
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The title sounds like something from the song 'Jabba on the Dias'
- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You'd pretty much have to appreciate the irony of veteran Lucasfilm Sound Designer/Editor Ben Burtt leaving for Disney/Pixar.
- whitesaint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2love steve or hate him, you gotta admit he is one of the few people that can stand up to bill gates face to face
- forgottenred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As if Lucas would have been making the movies put out by pixar? Did Lucas destroy ILM, Lucasarts, Lucasfilms? Sure Lucas can't write or direct but he is a creative pioneer.
- MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1my o/s's ceo can beat up your o/s's ceo
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ILM > Pixar
- SSCrow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1God Digg is repeating itself.
- entropy357, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Gee, thanks for the news flash. What else happened when President Reagan was in office?
Digg is supposed to be a news site. If you're looking to wax nostalgicly about things that happened over 20 years ago might I suggest www.80s.com. - SnakeO, on 10/12/2007, -4/+412/11/84 == my birthday!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -23/+22Steve Jobs = Glorifed Car Salesman
- MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0well pin a rose on his nose.
- cam18, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7but you have to admit, smart as hell though...
p.s. I'm not an apple fanboy... - AlphAssassin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Wow, this was news 22 years ago.
- aptiva, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2@Gemini25RB
Part of me wants to say "this ain't slashdot" :) - iainwall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Interesting how Steve Jobs has given little to none of his fortune to charity, but a man called Bill Gates has....
- Adamesq, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Wasn't this posted on Digg last year?
- CanceledCzech, on 10/12/2007, -16/+10Steve Jobs sucks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+7This article makes it sound like George Lucas is living from paycheck to paycheck. Believe me, the loss of Pixar for him is barely noticeble in Lucas' bank account rest assured.
Steve Jobs should thank god for two things: 1. Pixar and 2. Ipod. Apple would be long defunct without either. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+6Really? When was the last time Apple was muttered anywhere before the iPod came out? Only in nerd circles. Now everyone and their grandma knows what Apple is. iMac's are terrible, basically an eMachine with an Apple branding.

What is Digg?
