- kazumaSHELL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Apple classic logo FTW
- cliffy2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@diggamer: Because, AFAIK, it doesn't censor arbitrarily. And, besides, anyone with that much whitespace will be dugg down, as you have been. The system works itself out.
- sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Hell, I'm not even one of those self-proclaimed Apple Fanboys, and even I think this is cool. Especially the classic logo.
- BonerMachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This is cool, I'd love to have a classic Apple logo on my macbook, but I don't think it's worth this trouble. I'm pretty sure I'd destroy my screen somehow in the process.
- bonexaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9That's one expensive lighting gel. :)
Very cool though. If it didn't void my warranty I'd do it. - addiggt, on 07/06/2009, -0/+9Installation tutorials link : http://www.icolours.ca/installation.html
- econoar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@ireland,
that wouldn't allow light through like these films and it would fall off very easily. - miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If you take it out you'll be fine. Not sure why you'd need to spend $4 though- it doesn't take that much imagination or effort to find something that would do the same thing for free.
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I did this to my ibook about a year ago. The apple is blue now. Was really easy and the warrenty was already over so I wasent really worried about that.
- loudestnoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Mike, the creator of these custom apple logo filters is a really nice guy. If you look at the PowerBook instructions for installing a filter those are my hands and my PowerBook! :)
- aclements, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@diggamer
Because if people do stupid things like that, they get blocked...just like you are going to be right about now. - econoar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@miles
I agree but I linked to that site just because of the tutorials and custom design option. If anyone wants to do just a solid color, I'm sure they could find a film like that on their own, but still need those tutorials probably. - econoar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Keep in mind that I think this might void your warranty, although I don't know how they would know if you took it back out before you went in for a repair. Maybe it cuts some kind of tag?
- gyneric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ireland,
They don't sell self adhesive filters because these are simply gels used for stage lighting. They buy this stuff in big rolls and cut them into small pieces and charge a premium.
Lighting gels are made for high temperature inside stage lights, so there isn't really any reason to add glue coatings. That and any adhesive would break down at higher temps. For an example of the lighting filters, google roscolux - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7.... you just know that some idiot is gonna put a Vista logo...
- azscott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From the article:
"However, keep in mind that you should defiantly read through their tutorials and warnings before you go about this project."
Okay, I'll read the tutorial defiantly, but I won't like it - dammit! - Legato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3pretty sure... you can't do that...
it would be awesome if you could - dohidied, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought about putting one of the old-school apple logos on my iBook, but I think I like white better.
- NinJar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3any1 wanna try this on their macbook... it kinda looks tricky i dont wanna mess mine up hah =s
- bonexaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ireland,
@econoar,
I don't think they would fall off easily (just look at the water based stickers for protecting your iPod or MacBook go on, those don't fall off. Its more a question of how much light would go through both the white gel already installed + the color overlay. It'd work, just be very dim (or dimmer rather) - arbulus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2FTA: "you should defiantly read through their tutorials and warnings before you go about this project.
Why should I be defiant about it? Is the tutorial oppressing me? - jtorkbob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@econoa: On my 2001 iBook, it is simply four 1.5 mm Torx screws holding the back cover on. Then you have to pry the cover off. Not real fun, but if you're careful you could do this without leaving any sign. Having taken apart lots of laptops over the years, Apple is the worst for this. They really don't want you doing it yourself. I remember the first time I opened up a Dell and saw the labeled screw holes.
I had this thing apare for the tenth time and decided to make it worth my while by carving a little message into the paint on the inside of the bottom plastic. It is easily visable yet completely permanent. - Kevinok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It is not hard to do. Last year I made my friends apple pink. All you need is light gel.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4wtf, go out and buy some inkjet transparency, print on it, then stick it on with clear glue
- cjdaniel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Be sure to DEFY the tutorials.
- iColours, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"They don't sell self adhesive filters because these are simply gels used for stage lighting. They buy this stuff in big rolls and cut them into small pieces and charge a premium."
Is that so? How do we make custom inserts, or any of the designs?
We don't sell adhesive filters because I can't legally sell a sticker in the shape of the apple logo. Apple owns the rights to this logo, and there is no way to get their permission to use it. (I tried) - rodo75005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just bought the rainbow one. Getting my shiny MacBook an old school look.
But I will wait for the end of the warranty ... - mikedub1219, on 01/22/2008, -0/+1you can probably use lighting gels instead of ordering these. you can find them at any theater store or lighting equipment place
- seaners, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1someone should make a pdf download of the colours on the filter for people to print, i wouldn't know how to do it :(
- inactive, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1Made it myself. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=50208 ...
Huge thread there, but it documents the whole process! :) - fastguyrules, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1I installed the classic Apple gel on my my when the warranty ran out. It was pretty easy but reinstalling the MacBook's screen bezel can be frustrating because of the plastic clips used to hold it in place.

FAQ #3:
"3. Will installing your products void my warranty? Yes." - stephenrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14 dollars for a tiny piece of filter? any stage lighting supplier will give you a free sample of virtually any colour filter you want. if you ask nicely that is..
- Disodium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1know of a large chain that would carry this? I need some for another un related project but no clue where to start looking
- enzocn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hahaha I just did, it's pretty easy actually. You just have to be really really careful not to pop anything.
The hardest part is probably forcing the main frame out because you don't really wanna put too much force because it might break the plastic that binds the frame to the cover (same idea as plying off a key on your keyboard).
But once you're done with that all you have to do is unscrew the 12 screws around the screen and cut off the white filter. The white filter is a little thick so it takes some strokes to cut it through. Do this outside of the apple logo so you don't accidentally scratch the transparent logo. Just be very careful handling the wires from the display.
I used a few old binder organizer sheets as my filter. I covered the leaf with a green filter and the fruit with a red filter.
Twas a fun project - dgh1973, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"However, keep in mind that you should defiantly read through their tutorials and warnings before you go about this project."
I'm always very defiant about reading tutorials and warnings. Most of the time I ignore them completely and try to figure it out on my own.
Damn it azscott, you beat me to the punch. - 21.0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Always read tutorials with great defiance. And be incredulous when eating toast.
- retrosexual, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a really cool idea.
I found this sight a while a go, but thought somebody had already posted it in digg. - ElectroOverlord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://www.laptopdesignusa.com does all kinds of different mods for laptops. Our CEO is a apple guy…you may be able to spot his laptop in our gallery. Many mods do not void warranties do to our agreements with OEM's.
- tatoBug2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I sent in a Katamari Damacy picture to be made, but I'm scared I'll mess this up somehow. :-/
- macmacmacmacmac, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0yeah cool but my mac is too precious... http://www.faunkyapples.com offers a safer alternative - political, too!
- macslave, on 10/19/2009, -0/+0Whoa, how did you do get the orange shell?
- tristan55555, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Won't void your warranty if you take it in to an authorized apple dealer or service center to have it done. If you do it your self it can.
- vickomf1, on 12/03/2008, -0/+0Just print a color transparency!! isnt it easier? and u can customize it with any picture u want..
- inactive, on 07/29/2009, -1/+1It was the perfect finishing touch to my Tangerine Macbook Project!

- sublimemtb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I've opened the back of my powerbook to do something like this... it's not easy at all, and i have all the tools at my disposal. the top corner no longer looks so nice. I wouldn't do this without increadable patience and skill.and i'd say i'm pretty darned skilled, i've fixed a broken ribbon cable plug with duct tape on it's logic board.
- jaynedoe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1i've wanted to do this my computer but the person who told me about won't help me :(
- voxus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I have been doing warranty repair on Apples for the last few year and I'm really good at it. Their disassembly pdfs are excellent and way more complicated than these directions. Anyone who attempts this with a macbook or macbook pro in order to pimp it out is a fool. While the display rear housing is not a returnable core part, the lcd is. I guarantee that Apple would freak out with trying to return a core part that had ***** with in such a stupid way.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6Yeah, but why don't they make them sticky cut-outs so you could stick them on the LOGO without opening up your machine. Sometimes it amazes me how people miss the most simple solution.
