FOR ME TO POOP ON - TannerC, on 10/11/2007, -4/+51Great! Now all I need is an iPhone.
- rebotfc, on 10/11/2007, -6/+52Well written instructions with good screenshots.
Thanks for putting it together.
Dugg. - johnpaul191, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32is it "confirmed" if it's a hack? this was obviously just a matter of time. poor wording on here, the article is titled "How to add a custom ringtone (for intel Mac users only...for now)".
- eean, on 10/11/2007, -5/+31I think this cell phone feature stopped being cool and started being assumed in like 2003.
- dan12, on 10/11/2007, -7/+29im really sick of seeing "CONFIRMED" or "BREAKING" in every single digg title
- cwoolf34, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16Misleading title, made it sound like Apple had announced support for custom ringtones. No digg.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+20I'll wait for a GUI that can do this, that's all I need is to follow some online instructions, end up with a brick and since Apple/AT&T have offered no insurance plan for the phone, end up with a nice paperweight and no way to get a new one.
Dugg for the breakthrough. - 1iProd, on 10/11/2007, -7/+19Aww, did the mean old iPhone tease you too much :(
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17You can restore it.
- wired4u, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15Why on earth would Apple not make this a feature built in already. You dropped $600 on a new gadget and right away you have to hack it go get simple functions that should of been included in the first place
- JoeTech, on 10/11/2007, -6/+15SIMPLE?
SIMPLE MY ASS.... - jimsf, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Great for the impatient, but I'll wait for the next software update Apple pushes out that should include this enhancement. Great to see that it's possible though.
- ReadItAndWeep, on 10/11/2007, -12/+19Custom Ringtones!!! Welcome to 1998 fanboys.
- puddi, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Kudos to all those who worked together to figure this out!
- Alaris, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9confirmed that this works great.
- atmos, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8It works fine this way and you can always restore if you ***** it up. I'm very happy with my custom ringtones right this second. :)
- TheSolomon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Exactly my thoughts. "Confirmed working hack for custom iPhone ringtones" would be much more accurate.
- rickpable, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12Definitely cool, but I'm a little too weary to try it myself. Ending up with a $500 brick isn't my idea of a good time.
- LANjackal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You know, my good ol' 2 year-old Nokia candybar-style phone can play ANY MP3 file transferred to it via Bluetooh (no dock needed) as a standard feature of the phone. Cost (in 2005): $300. I really can't believe people are throwing double that amount at a device that actually requires a long, convoluted and dangerous hack to do the same. Really shows the grip that Apple has on mindshare - people will buy useless junk as long as it has an Apple logo on it. Pretty pathetic.
- Ksilebo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Most Verizon phones don't. They try to lock you into their "Get It Now" *****.
- dslozak, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8"Following these instructions may brick (kill) your iPhone making it completely unusable."
No thanks. - combustion8, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5make your own.
- madrid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4My guess is that they didn't want to get into the "Licensing for Public Performance" issues surrounding custom ring tones based on songs. At least not yet.
- kmgeorge, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6This is a great article and I was able to go through it in about 10 minutes; worked beautifully for me!
- Calcularius, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3How much were your ringtone$
- knobtwiddler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3we're deliberately putting something about ringtones on the digg home page? i thought ringtones = spam.
"If everyone who demanded a new TV demanded world peace instead, we'd have world peace"
-John Lennon - davymac, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I find it freaking ridiculous that you straight up have to use this ridiculously ugly ass hack just to get a damn ringtone.
- sinembarg0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You must not have a Verizon razr then. Verizon wants to take you for everything you've got. By default, Verizon phones aren't supposed to be ble to be used as bluetooth modems, can't do custom ringtones. I have a krzr, a smaller version of the razr more focused on music, and it doesn't support custom ringtones out-of-box. I can put mp3s on it and play them through the loudspeaker, but I can't use them as ringtones.
- pinchies, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3In my own country too..... (Australia has just started drifting closer to the U.S. due to the attraction between the iphone and my wallet)
- macslut, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6The reason why this is Digg-worthy is that hate or love the iPhone, this is a case where Apple tried to put an artificial tech limitation on its product and less than a week after release, the community worked around this. Sure Apple may release this functionality anyway, and may have planned to. It will be interesting to see how they react and how this may or may not affect potential ringtone sales for the iPhone.
- lostboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3the restore is 99.99% fool proof. I don't say 100% just not to tempt fate, but there is no way you would not be able to restore the original image
- LemmingJesus, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8A feature that should have been there to begin with CONFIRMED!!
- DelMonte, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4knubie:
Well even Apple fans and iPhone owners know that most (if not all) other phones can have custom ringtones, they don't need to be reminded with a witty "in-your-face" attitude, or overuse of the F word.
At the time of writing this, wired4u has +6 diggs for a comment that is negative towards the iPhone. If you look at the comments that were dugg down, they are either borderline offensive or bad jokes at the expense of iPhone owners. - DelMonte, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4It's the second comment I made about it, and both are referring to the same post by alexray0, where he used the word ***** 8 times in a single phrase, for other things than a simple exclamation, and my complain was not specifically about the use of this word, but the rest too.
I don't know where you work, but my boss would never use that word when talking to me. I use it from time to time when with friends, but I try to avoid using it in public spaces.
Sure it's just a group of letter, and I find ridiculous to see how americans are so afraid of this word and bleep it out on national TV when everyone can see it's being said. That doesn't mean I'm ok with people using it every 3 words, that why I said "overuse of the F word".
BTW I didn't digg down HA5TY's comment just below, despite him using the word ***** as an exclamation. - nashpreds99, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I wouldnt mind spending a little while following the directions to do this, but with the kind of luck I have, my iPhone will just get messed up. I spent too much money on it for that to happen. Unless I see a lot people having success with this then I probably won't do it.
- macslut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You make a good point, but I don't believe that was the case. If you go through the hack, you'll see it's simply a matter of putting the audio files on the iPhone and the OS uses what's in the file system directory. Apple didn't need to hack its own system, it just needed the ring tone synch added to the interface of iTunes, and the have iTunes copy the files into the directory. Now I know developing an interface for this...as simple as it would be, would still take time to anally obsess about its perfection, but the thing is...we already saw it during the keynote. So the interface was there, the code is a simply file transfer into a specific directory (copyable code from other file transfers). This means Apple pulled the functionality. I believe it was because one or both of the following:
1) Apple hasn't yet secured licensing deals for ringtones.
2) Apple wants to spread out added features to maintain news interest and demand.
Apple *will* offer ringtones, make no mistake. The ringtone market is still bigger than the online music store market. Apple is probably fighting hard to get the price under a dollar and to allow users to make their own. - brutalentropy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Audacity is your friend! - Calcularius, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm really sick of hyperbole in EVERY SINGLE comment
- crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Well aren't you special.
- trekkie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yeah I was wondering if I was the only one that is not a fan of this 'ring tone' thing that every one uses.
- willgill, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Cool. One feature closer to being as good as my kid's $29 phones.
- crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Should _have_, you fool.
- sam991, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Way to go get a feature the rest of us have had since 7 years ago.
- iMactel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Good job on the hack and the instructions.
My money is on Apple to enable custom ringtones that can only be bought through iTunes. Since privately owned songs are already $1, they may charge $1 for ringtone versions licensed to play in public. If the lincensing isn't a big deal, then maybe they'll go cheaper at 50 cents. Though, the best option would be to include a new function in iTunes that would let you rip a 30 second clip from any song in your library, but thats just wishful thinking. - mccarron, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Why don't you get better insurance through your home/renter insurance provider. They extended my home policy to fully cover my MacBook Pro and my 8GB iPhone outside of the home for $100 a year. No deductible or anything else.
I did the ringtone installation this morning, it was super simple. - macslut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2They have to say that. Go through the process. If you understand what's going on you'll see it's pretty safe.
- almalax19, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is free though. The Apple sanctioned solution wont be i assure you.
- DelMonte, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3"but he's saying what everyone thinks. i agree with him. 100%"
everyone? If the sales of iPods and iPhones are any indication, it's far from everyone.
I don't have any problem with people being critical of Apple, or being annoyed by the number of iPhone stories.
My problem is the aggressive language and words used in that post. I don't see his post as very different from a violent racist comment from someone having serious anger management problems. - tybris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This has to be the most pathetic news ever.
