- stalefries, on 11/11/2007, -5/+42There's no reason they can't. My theory is that Mac apps (in general) look better because developers follow Apple's lead. Apple knows what good design and good user interface design is, and developers recognize both of those qualities in Apple's work.
- KSUdesigner, on 11/11/2007, -4/+37Is it me, or is it strange to see Windows users asking for ports of Mac apps?
- Roger, on 11/11/2007, -7/+40Damn I wish Windows or Linux apps could look that attractive.
- tsvb, on 11/11/2007, -0/+22title is misleading, this is a mockup only. amirite?
- NanoHelix, on 11/11/2007, -0/+19It's still only a mockup. I hope it materializes.
- zeptobyte, on 11/10/2007, -1/+16Right here, make your own:
http://code.google.com/p/blacktree-alchemy/ - Roger, on 11/11/2007, -3/+17Sorry but Firefox and whatever GTK app you have in the foreground don't even compare to average, good looking OSX app.
And I wasn't just talking about Coverflow, the Dock or special effects. - neodorian, on 11/11/2007, -6/+16Example: Nothing special. Not "16gigs of ram". Just one.
(I can't seem to take a screenshot of the shift switcher so this is someone else's)

And a few quick screenies of my desktop.

It's not tough and didn't require any use of the command line for those who can only express themselves through pointing at pictures. Yes I know it is a matter of taste, preference, etc. but there is definitely eye candy outside of OSX which is what this poster claimed was not true. - stalefries, on 11/11/2007, -1/+9Sure, and it's been in iTunes for a long time as well. Heck, you could do it without Compiz Fusion. The new iPods have cover flow built-in, but I don't think they even have 3D cards built-in.
But this isn't what they're talking about. What they want to do is integrate the coverflow interface into Quicksilver. - ipodgr, on 11/11/2007, -2/+10This would be a way for me to finally use coverflow (besides iTunes) ! Nice idea.
- rowmz, on 11/10/2007, -0/+8have you tried bezel? its one of the default appearances, and if you just change the colors a bit, it looks great.
- eleventh, on 11/11/2007, -3/+10Seriously, where is the Windows port of Quicksilver?
- phogasmic, on 11/11/2007, -1/+8OSx is full of useful eye candy. Coverflow is a productivity enhancer and it looks pretty. It more useful then columns is some situations, like spotlight searches, and browsing pics and movies.
- ckoerner, on 11/10/2007, -0/+5One idea in Quicksilver is the idea that you take a file, folder, or other object and tell QS via an action to modify it someway.
So you could tell QS, "Take this picture and email to my friend"
You would do this by finding your photo>Tab and begin typing Email to...>Tab again and start typing the contact name.
Voila, an email with that photo addressed to your friend ready to be sent, all without touching the mouse. - fowleryo, on 11/11/2007, -1/+6leopard only, my friend
- toastgodsupreme, on 11/11/2007, -1/+6Yes, people are idiots, digging mockups and such.
- inactive, on 11/11/2007, -1/+4compiz fusion has AIDS too
- chrisbarr, on 11/10/2007, -0/+3you can move the menu bar to whichever screen you want though, just drag it around in the displays preference pane
- ariez84, on 11/10/2007, -3/+6Its called Launchy. Use QS on MBP, and launchy on Vista.
http://www.launchy.net/ - Perk, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2I already have a use for coverflow in finder... best. pr0n. browser. evar.
- emehrkay, on 11/10/2007, -1/+3What is the deal with this app and the english language sentence structure? I once watched a video where the creator said something about a noun, verb, and indirect object, and in the thread someone mentioned something about the verb. Can anyone explain the theory behind this?
- eddyc, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2is the point of quicksilver not that you actually know what you want?? sorry if I'm missing something here
- eleventh, on 11/10/2007, -2/+4Running Launchy - love it. But it's not Quicksilver.
Now if it could index ID3 tags... - ploke, on 11/10/2007, -1/+3/mandatory comment
- irgeorge, on 11/11/2007, -1/+3when trying to belittle something you think is stupid, 'retarded' is probably one of the more important words to make sure you've actually spelt correctly yourself...
- neodorian, on 11/11/2007, -1/+3You're right. The OSX apps do tend to look better. Probably a result of lots of time and money spent designing them. I wasn't disputing that because I'm well aware that OSX is a very attractive OS. I just think that other OSes have their nice points as well. The level of customization you get in Linux (or even Windows with 3rd party apps like Stardock's suite) makes a big difference for many users. I could make this desktop look any of a hundred different ways with different window decorations, docks, applets, etc. I really like that and it's one reason I use the setup I have now.
- emehrkay, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2That is pretty cool. Thanks for the explanation. I wonder if anyone else sees UI development like the QS team does.
- inactive, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2yeah thats just an app launcher………… not really the same thing at all
- dragazis, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2Anybody else not really think this kind of defeats the purpose of Quicksilver? Quicksilver is meant to be un-intrusive and , this sorta makes it intrusive. Maybe if coverflow was integrated into the Cube interface, like you search for a document, tab to another side for a list of search results within one side of the cube or something of that sort.
- neodorian, on 11/11/2007, -0/+2It's a good thing that different people use their computers for different things. I do my day-to-day office work and entertainment on Linux and boot to Windows if I need to use Photoshop, Fruityloops, Avid, or anything where there is no free analog. No need to be snotty about the fact that you (claim to) use your computer for professinal grade design, audio production, flash development and color management. If you do, then this isn't probably the right tool for you and it's worth shelling out for a commercial product.
- nailer, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1No. It doesn't use or need quicksilver code. You just hit win-tab. There no setup work required.
- wiihuck, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1cube FTW
- nailer, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1Whether the tool uses coverflow's code or not is irrelevant: the point is that unlike what some are claiming, this isn't new, it's the default mechanism to switch windows in the current version of Ubuntu.
- Kitsun, on 11/10/2007, -1/+2I agree, but not all of us like docks, or transparent taskbars.
I also use dual-monitors, which was incredibly painful when using a mac, as the menu bar always stayed on one screen. - wiihuck, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1i'm going to say it louder this time since you haven't gotten it since your last post:
SHIFTSWITCHER IS NOT QUICKSILVER. THEY HAVE NO FUNCTIONALITY IN COMMON. - wiihuck, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1options...
- outofbeta, on 11/11/2007, -1/+2wait. how can you do that in compiz fusion? is there a quicksilver clone integrated?
- Bellerephon, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1Where is the skull electrode helmet which transmits what I want to find to my desktop without ever having to consciously think about it? C'mon!
- thebigmatay, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1Oh I know, I mean who would actually want to support ideas they like??
- taylorcarrigan, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1As beautiful as that is, I don't really believe that it would increase my productivity with Quicksilver (which I more or less live in). I love it when in the Finder and looking at images, though.
- nailer, on 11/12/2007, -0/+11. Not sure you think this isn't an article.
2. The article is about combining two things to do window switching.
3. Try copying a file using any window switcher in any OS.
Congratulation om being Blocked. - Codee, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1Nice QS concept. Leopard would be better if spotlight or find could have a layout option like that.
- nailer, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1Coverflow is for albums, not apps. Hence the 'cover bit'. Furtermore Coverflow itself is a rip of Looking Glass.
- jakem1, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1I haven't tried this but it doesn't look like it does anything more than Vista's Start menu search does.
- inactive, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1i like the Primer interface over everything i've seen so far... but that's just me.
- Subcranium, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1Why do you keep saying "sliver" instead of "silver?"
- inactive, on 11/11/2007, -1/+2I meant in this particular situation.
- wiihuck, on 11/11/2007, -1/+1i use shiftswitcher on compiz fusion. it's a rip of coverflow. coverflow is not a rip of shiftswitcher.
duh. - esquire360, on 11/10/2007, -1/+2quicksilver is great if you "know" what what you want, bye address book u died to me
- nailer, on 11/11/2007, -1/+1The article says this is new. It's the default way to switch windows in the current version of Ubuntu.
If you think someone's a 'fanboy' for pointing that out, I'd suggest the 'fanboy' may be closer than you think. -
