      I don't have a Zune or an iPod. (although I once had a g4 40gig iPod.) I think they both lack in the music store scene. With my Zen Vision, while it does not look nearly as nice as the Zune, I can choose from many stores that live in Windows Media Player. Both Zune and iPod lock you into one store.

      Then again... all I use is Urge on a subscription basis, which *could* be replaced by the Zune Marketplace... Ah, if only I had the money...
    • zip22, on 10/12/2007, -25/+101admirabumblembee, your first mistake was owning the 6g ipod. as a self professed apple fanboy, you would know that the most recent generation of ipod is known as the 5.5g ipod. second was your battery life figures. you provided stats for neither and i doubt them both after reading many reviews of both devices. your third mistake was saying that the zune is simply the better device. that is not the case. both devices have their pros and cons. there are a few things the ipod holds over the zune including UMS (os independant and you can use it as a portable harddrive), gapless, lossless, higher resolution tv output, movie and television content in the itunes store, podcast support, games, contacts, clock, calender...

      so you see, the zune is not definitively the better device. it depends on what you're looking for. thats why i dugg you down at least.

      Either way, I beleive the zune is the better player for the reasons I listed. As noted, this is obviously my opinion..

      And what's all this talk about DRM? With 95% of digg comments/stories being about getting drm-free music or allmymp3.com, why does the only time DRM come up is when the zune/ipod is mentioned? You know you still can rip a cd and throw it on there drm free, or bit-torrent it if it's not against your morals, or listen to creative commons music or...

      To the stupid 'no one forces you to come here' rhetoric.. No *****. No one forces me to watch GW on tv either but when it's there I still resent what he does. No one forces me to research 3rd world countries but I still wanna help them.       Being a software engineer/graphical designer, I would also insert a rant about programming languages and which design style is best, but I will defer from that. There are plenty of other "nerds" that have that covered already. Let's just say I used to airbrush some badass designs back in the day before Bezier tools and SVG were even invented...But then I got caught up in the "profession that makes more money" and my graphical design skillz got put on a halt so that I could program my little heart out...garbage

      Digg me down, but I'm not a tasteless and nonsencial bastard like most of you peeps are...

Costco doesn't keep their Ipod inventory where customers can get their hands on them -- instead they have these big laminated display cards that you have to take to the customer service desk to trade for the actual item.       The design was from a Toshiba product, so complain to them if you don't like it. The navigation is smooth and more flashy than the iPod's plain white and blue GUI, the 'fake scrollwheel' wasn't designed to copy the iPod's, and the zune gets 30minutes more video and the same amount as the ipod's. There, I just disproved everything you just said.

      By the way, I have a Zen Vision:M, but I think the Zune is a little better than the iPod.

Personally I own a Neuros Media Player, which has a 3.5" screen, 320x480, 40GB, can play a bunch of different media formats which removes the need for converting files in most cases. It doesn't use proprietary software for uploading media onto it, in fact its just like loading files onto an external hard drive. It can also capture video from an external source, like a DVD player. The player itself doesn't stand out much in the looks department, but not so ugly as to make it a major con. It's also fairly large compared to its competition, but still fits comfortably in a pocket. All that and it was about 40-50 dollars less then a 60GB iPod video. Now, I'm not saying to go out and buy a Neuros, I'm saying there's a whole world of products out there deserving of your attention, and to do some research before buying.

      yea, i own an h320 and an ipod 60gb 5g and for everyday use, I use the ipod because its better for "out and about use" due to the bigger screen, dumbed down navi, simplicity, video availability on a larger screen and don't forget rockbox running flawlessly to sweeten the deal. then for strictly listening to music at home the h320 is better (much better sound quality, larger size, more customizable in stock firmware, even better rockbox support)
      plus... i can carry the ipod everywhere cause i don't care if it gets messed up :-D after all it IS just an iPod :-D

Knowing that J Allard designed it, I had some huge expectations for it. My friend got one and I let it play out how he liked his over about a month period, and if he had positive feedback for me I would sacrifice not being able to fit all of my music on it and switch over to the Zune w/ Zune Pass.

      The one time I played with it at his house it wouldn't turn on, then after it finally did turn on (hard reset) the music would skip. Definitely a product that was released to market early for a quick holiday sales boost. I'll probably get a 2g Zune, when they release it w/ a bigger hard drive. By that time all of the bugs should be ironed out. For the time being you are fooling yourself if you think the Zune at this point is better than the iPod.

      That being said, I don't see what the big deal w/ this story/picture is...

My eyes widened, my god, a fellow zune in the wild. They all rag on me and my little Zune, but my brother said, "Hey send her a song" So I plopped my Zune out and picked a song, and sent it. She didn't realize who sent it, and we were all watching her from across the room, they started laughing, and we kept going back and forth sending songs. She sent the Jackson 5's ABC, I sent Smooth Criminal in return, she sent Aretha Franklin's Respect, I sent Digital Underground's The Humpty Dance in reply. :P

      But yeah, suffice to say it was cool to catch another zune in the wild.

    All stores get a skirt to put around the bottom of the pallets, and they must have been too lazy to change it back out.

    Our Costco has sold out THREE times of the Zunes we got in stock, and as of right now we are out again.
    This picture is no indication of the Zunes sucking, just that the store ran out again! LOL!!!

    Funny how Mac people will see it a different way, and think Costco stopped selling them. :)

MS bragged that over 30,000 places were selling the Zune, based on MS's marketshare of 9%, 2%, 2% & 2% (each week as reported) over the same holiday period, that's about 40,000 Zunes sold ... or about 1 per store ... Pretty good is you're selling a Bentley, not so good for a gadget at $250 bucks. There are 73,000 MS employees so we know that not every employee has bought one yet. MS is projecting a million Zunes by June or sales of about 125,000 per month to get there - looks like we'll be seeing some new rebates - probably tied to Vista. If you're keeping scaore and MS is on projections, in June, Apple should be around 100 million ipods (more if the ipod phone projections are on target) so their odds of success will literally be 1 in a million by June 2007.

    Maybe Zune users should double up - for another $250, they can finally activate that sharing feature and randomly hand out the other zune to people.

The reason the iPod took off was not solely marketing - compared to the iPods I've since owned, those four devices were utterly horrific to use, both in terms of the device UI and the PC software side of things.

If celebrity endorsements sold bad products, Sony's digital Walkman® would be the number one DAP. But it isn't, and the Zune won't be either.

The Zune's switch interface control is one of the few positive commonalities among most of the reviews. It's simple mainly. Up and down during playback turn the volume up and down, during navigation they scroll up and down song lists, pressing down or up kicks the scroll speed into high gear with a letter appearing on the side to see where you're at. Another nice thing about the tactile control is its a bit more precise than the scroll wheel, but not by much for those that are used to apple's scroll wheel. You have a dedicated back button which will get you back to a previous sub menu (you can also hold and it'll bring you back right away to the main menu). and you have a dedicated play/pause button. Picking music takes you into top down menu where you press left or right picking either artists, songs, albums, genres, or playlists, then its all up and down each of those lists to pick whatever you're looking for. Pretty simple.

    Sharing songs/music via wifi (prob someone should work on getting a zune browser or something)
    DRM (by this i mean MS has its own DRM for songs you buy)
    Widescreen
    Plays music/video/ views photos

    iPod:
    plays music/videos/ views photos
    DRM (yes iTunes has DRM too realize it)
    No Radio unless you buy accessory
    standard screen
    no sharing

    people bash the zune for FM radio capabilities which iPod does not offer because they say why would you want to listen to the radio...I agree but at least the feature is there.

    Sharing is limited to the ammount you can play it when the file is DRM....iPod offers no sharing capabilities so cant really complain about it when they limit it to a certain ammount of plays. If MS just let it be unlimited obviously it would be better for us but cmon the RIAA would be all over that ***** they hate it enough that pretty much every music device has pirated music they wouldnt like it if u could just transfer all your songs person to person.

    DRM...every company is going to want DRM again the RIAA and MPAA would be heated and probably sue. And omg Apple has DRM too who would of thunk it.

    It has a widescreen, which is sick. You may not realize how good it is until you actually have on in your hand and are watching a video that is widescreen or looking at a wide picture, but this screen kicks the ***** out of my 5G iPod. I also like how the screen is sortof sunken in it doesnt get scratched as much. My iPod looks like a war zone on the screen.

    On a side note too a lot of people are complaining that the click wheel doesnt function like the iPod one and that is prob due to some patent that Apple has for it.     So I think zune is a relatively good product just Apple obviously established the standard for mp3 players...but dont come out with things like zune sucks because they are copying apple, just like they did with windows...true they did, but its not like apple came up with mac os on their own.

      True, it does have the same resolution as the iPod but that extra screen real estate is used to display more information, with a nice large pic of the album art of the track you're listening to. It's more album centric. I like that. Basically the extra space is nice to have.

    Are you people afraid to wear jeans other than LEVI, simply because if your seen wearing something different than the first that you will be a loser. Probably not. Why be afraid using another device than the iPod, assuming it is better, like the Zune.

      Anyway, you admitted the software for the Zune sucks, and it does. Apple along with every analyst that comments on the market all say the same thing: it is ALL about the software. Your average consumer (not us) will not deal with buggy software, they will return the product as defective. The software is everything.

      One can only hope. It's a job to get past the type of sheep that infest places like Digg. But MS has done it before with the Xbox and with Windows Media Center even with the same nuts hoping for them to fail there too.

  • scarabic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is a clever headline but Costco routinely stacks lots of crates on top of each other because there is no difference between their "inventory storage" space and their "retail display" space. It's very typical to see a product you want up on the high shelf, in a shrink-wrapped palatte, while something you don't want is there, unwrapped and ready for the taking, at eye level.

    In fact, you could argue that Costco is trying to clear out the iPods in this case, and getting ready to sell a boatload of Zunes.

    I doubt that... and I love my iPod and hope the Zune goes away quickly. But still... this photo is a non-event. A nice hardy-har, but no digg.

    Dude their are better interfaces than the almighty click wheel. For example the one switch that used to be on my Creative Muvo MX. You had left, right, and down to select a song.

    You call the WIFI gimmicky I call it innovative. The principle that I could wirelessly share music from my music player is quite atractive. I do believe that the Zune's WIFI has been hacked to allow greater flexibility and besides if MS did allow it to be %100 open, problems with the Media Cartel would just be massive. And if you don't think the IPood has DRM in it just try putting any Itunes on any other MP3 player and try playing it. Doesn't work so hot does it. My self I just enjoy my Napster for $15 month and unlimited downloads and converting them using Tunebite.

      That why I bought a iRiver which you can flash with some korean/eu firmware to make them UMS using my favorite File Commander, also use it as a memory stick too. I never did try rockbox flash on ipods thought.

Great for kids, easy on the wallet.
