- Noctem, on 01/08/2008, -25/+188Uhm, Verizon has had this feature on a lot of its phones for a while now.
- cognizance8, on 01/08/2008, -17/+149Glad to see they picked up one of the best things Sony Ericsson phones have had for a while, TrackID is awesome.
- MikeTRose, on 01/08/2008, -27/+122Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. This is sufficiently advanced.
- Twenty, on 01/08/2008, -10/+77My phone has this, and I got it over a year ago. It's called MusicID or something.
It's not a super-advanced phone, either. Nokia 600i I think. - romistrub, on 01/08/2008, -20/+84This is not new. This is not advanced. This is very basic audio recognition. Much easier than voice recognition.
- pands, on 01/08/2008, -8/+65yeah but this is about the ~~~iPhone~~~
- MrWhipplemen, on 01/08/2008, -3/+56advanced or not, It says "and a great song comes on the radio"
so... buried as inaccurate - gagandeepsd, on 01/08/2008, -13/+58this has been done for about over a year now in Canada. that's right, Canada. Just because someone mentioned it on the iPhone, all your dicks got hard. This is nothing new and the iPhone has nothing to do with it. You can do this on any phone.
- namuh, on 01/08/2008, -18/+60Wow, I could only do this 2 years ago on my moto E815...Next!
- Morphine7399, on 01/08/2008, -18/+47Wow! My mother's cars stereo as well as my zune can do this, do we need to have separate article about those products too?
- inactive, on 01/08/2008, -16/+38Ron Paul.
- Baku, on 01/08/2008, -9/+30This... has been available on many phones for the past 2 years +... on Sony Ericsson phones its called "TrackID"... but because something similar is on the almighty iPhone.... it hits the front page. Jesus...
- wrzhydr, on 01/08/2008, -1/+18The iPhone makes everyone's dick hard..even if you're a girl.
- superkendall, on 01/08/2008, -3/+18Summary should probably mention this is a third party app...
- capiCrimm, on 01/08/2008, -2/+16to you, remember at one point someone pulling off your nose was magic.
- otatop, on 01/08/2008, -9/+23Apple: Using old ***** and convincing you they invented it since 1977.
- seastobble, on 01/08/2008, -3/+16The reason this is so amazing is that it's a hack. So far, this has worked flawlessly, even with some obscure bands.
- eschompthis, on 01/08/2008, -3/+16WOW!! but ive been enjoying this AMAZING software on my 2 year old ericsson :(
- LMaxey, on 01/08/2008, -0/+13If the link starts with ballzinyamouf and has no description its pretty much an instant bury
- TheXuu, on 01/08/2008, -4/+17Uhh... iPhone is not really required.. other services have had this for a while.. its normally a number you call and then it texts you the result. Yawn.
- freehunter, on 01/08/2008, -0/+12The radio is not doing audio identification, the radio station is broadcasting the song's title and artist name along with the audio. Certain stations in my area do that, too, but you need a special radio to decode and display it, which comes stanard on some cars. I wouldn't be surprised if the Zune could decode this, too. However, it is far from being the same thing, it's like the Zune telling you what song you're playing from the hard drive, because the source is telling it what it is.
- Whackly, on 01/08/2008, -2/+14zune user here. like my zune. certain it doesn't do this. it doesn't have a microphone, perhaps each one is imbued with the sould of a dead orphan and the song is identified though esp? it's microsoft, after all, and why waste orphans?
- romistrub, on 01/08/2008, -3/+14I think the real question is, how is this not *obvious*?
Voice = variable tonality, speed, syllable strength.
Music = static recording.
Seems pretty basic to me. - llamapalooza87, on 01/08/2008, -0/+11Wow, I'm amazed at how HATING Apple has become the new iPhone story. I'll admit that there were at one point far too many iPhone stories on Digg. But now it's way more annoying when people complain about them. Nearly every single comment is "my old phone can do this" or "iphone is crap" and quite frankly they're getting annoying since they clutter up legitimate stories. Why not say "while other phones can do this, it's cool that someone took the initiative and made a free solution for the iPhone" or even just "well I don't care since I don't have an iPhone but for the millions of people who do, this is probably something good to know about" and just ignore it and move on?
- jdubyah, on 01/08/2008, -1/+12I don't see how this will fly for very long. It appears Sony is helping with the identification.
- truspect0r, on 01/08/2008, -0/+11what the ***** digg. cant you just ban that domain *.myminicity.*
- lynx44, on 01/08/2008, -7/+17Cool, but its has been done (although I don't know how well):
http://www.intomobile.com/2007/05/22/verizon-wirel ... - masterc, on 01/08/2008, -5/+14Exactly. I've been doing this with my crappy Motorola V325 for almost 2 years now.
- CJChesterson, on 01/08/2008, -0/+8Um, the lack of microphone on the iTouch is probably a bigger issue.
- WiseWeasel, on 01/08/2008, -3/+11Generalizations are ALWAYS wrong.
- JerMe, on 01/08/2008, -14/+21Uh, Verizon Wireless has had this for a while:
http://products.vzw.com/index.aspx?id=news_going_d ... - solarwind24, on 01/08/2008, -2/+9What if you're a girl?
- deadnoob, on 01/08/2008, -4/+11my phone can do this and has been able to for a while. its awesome software when it works.
- neosublime, on 01/08/2008, -1/+8Nobody gives a ***** that other phones already have a feature like this. The great thing about the iPhone is what you can add to it. Let me see someone add a kickass web browser to a Voyger, or enV. Let me see you write your own apps for other platforms that are this rich. Face it, there's a reason iPhone is 2007 invention of the year.
Suck ass - godling72, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6Did a quick look at the app. The magic is done by impersonating a Sony EricssonK810i phone ("SonyEricssonK810i/R6BC Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UNTRUSTED/1.0"), and using sony's service: http://wap.sonyericsson.com/recognize/query (which uses Gracenote MusicID technology) .
- inactive, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6But that costs $$$/per month
- Quakee, on 01/08/2008, -1/+7Verizon has had this for at least a couple of years. Just because its the iPhone its groundbreaking, makes front page, and top story?
***** lame - Zanneth, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6For goodness sake, nobody cares if you had it on your phone X number of years ago. The point of the article is that it's now on the iPhone, which had only just recently been released and even more recently been able to run third-party apps.
- Jo9100, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6for only 2.50 every song! (airtime charges may apply)
- timjim31, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6watchoo talkin' bout, willis?!
- darkane, on 01/08/2008, -7/+13Wow! This must be new because it's on an iPhone! Only the iPhone has new technologies! This definitely hasn't been around for several years! TUAW is not at all oblivious to fact that there is a world outside of Apple! Cool!
- braddial, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6Erica Sadun has released some great apps for us iPhone owners. Thanks a lot for this one!
- SiNiK, on 12/31/2008, -2/+8It's also a standard download app on most Verizon phones...
- rderveloy, on 01/08/2008, -1/+6On the surface it seems very simple, but to design such a system, you would need to compensate for varying degrees of speaker quality and audio sources.
For example, are you attempting to ID the song in your car? Does it have a quiet interior? How about ambient music at a busy restaurant?
Designing software that will pick music up from background noise and other interference is not an easy undertaking by itself. Now you have to take into account that you can't optimize the iPhone's microphone and recording circuitry since it's locked away in a user device. Not only that, but your system will need to work with a countless variety of stereo speakers with varying degrees of quality. When you account for these technological hurdles, you begin to understand how difficult this is to accomplish.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this is a miraculous feat of engineering that encroaches on the complexity of the Apollo program, but it's no cakewalk either. - ghostfish, on 01/08/2008, -7/+12This isn't new by any means, but naturally, because it's the iPhone, this will get at least a few hundred diggs.
- areohbe, on 01/08/2008, -2/+7I've never been charged for musicID, where did you hear that?
- XTCinOvaltine, on 01/08/2008, -2/+7I tested it out. I LOVE it. As they said, its still very beta. I tried some new songs on it (The Way I are, Rihanna, Sum 41, Rise Against) and it got all of those. I tried out Rammstein (messed up or didn't respond). The weird thing is that I tried out "africa" by Toto and it came up with "anything" by jojo. It seems JoJo sampled Toto in that song... So all in all, for a first release, it is REALLY good. I can only see it getting better.
- XTCinOvaltine, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5Its not dependent on EDGE, but Im not sure the iPod touch has a microphone.
- ocellnuri, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5The point isn't that this is new... everyone knows it's been around for years. However, there's a community of people who own iPhones, and this opens up the functionality (for free) to the platform. It's an impressive hack, in relation to the platform, and has been done with no official support from the manufacturer.
No one's claiming it's new, it's just exciting to a group of people who own a device. Can everyone quit being so defensive? I'd expect just as much attention for GPS hacks on the PSP, but it is certainly not the first GPS device.
The initially bland and crippled iPhone (and Touch) is slowly being developed to be a robust device, thanks to a lot of talented developers. - triscuitbiscuit, on 01/08/2008, -4/+9This is nice compared to AT&T's normal service (MusicID) on the SYNC (and I am pretty sure many other phones). MusicID charges a month to month fee for something which like this app should be free.
