- noxqs, on 10/11/2007, -1/+30I also like istumber better this namely because it doesnt cost 8 dollars
- sweintraub, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30I like istumber better but this is definitely cool. Also Kismac let's you sniff packets and break into WEP or WPA networks
http://www.9to5mac.com/istumbler-travelers-best-friend - basye, on 10/11/2007, -3/+24Shareware.
- kevnaca, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19There is a free alternative that does the same thing as this. It's coconutWifi.
http://coconut-flavour.com/coconutwifi/ - bloaty, on 10/19/2007, -0/+15Shareware is like that sticky goo you find under your desk, it tastes good, but when you try to peel it off it sticks you to the desk.
- jpt62089, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Hey... My neighbors finally closed up their WiFi... haha
- badjoke, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Windows is better at some things, Apple is better at others. Get used to it. Apple-geeks aren't claiming to be 100% better.
- bloaty, on 10/19/2007, -1/+11lets make an open source alternative that is one hundred times better with built in wep auditing, strength indicators you can actually see, and an option to have the menu bar icon change to red when you are connected to a secured network, green when you are connected to an open network, and blue when there is an open network available.
- ErinIsADrunk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8its a cool app that I found find really useful but $8? give me a break. Considering what other things I could get for $8 this thing is a rip off.
- supermanred, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Thanks man, they should build that into OS X. Thanks for the post. Works great. I had a widget in dash that did similar thing but was muchhhh slower to update.
Cheers mate!!! - NewChar, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Not funny, C for effort.
- PathDaemon, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11iStumbler's great, but this thing INTEGRATES INTO THE AIRPORT MENU. That's frickin' awesome.*
*Though not $8 awesome. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8agree with @sweintraub. iStumbler is better, not just because it is free but because it is a seperate app and has more controls and lays out data better. Also agree KisMac is good for sniffing packets ;)
- Cockdiesel, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10this should be renamed to "Abusing Digg to try to sell products" or "The death of Digg"
bury this mofo - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7pay for a wireless finder? when kismet is free? LOL useless
- stalefries, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5...not that the Airport menu was speedy to begin with.
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8@skyscape: No, your Windows network thingy opened another window, showing the same amount of information as this but taking up ten times the space and twice as much time. This, and NetworkManager for Linux, are much better.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Yes, iStumbler is great for wifi network browsing. It's also fun to search for other Macs on the network using its Rendezvous nee Bonjour browser.
- chrisbarr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Well, i guess I'll enjoy this for 15 days and then delete it.
- yonas, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Dammit, I just got pwn'd. I would have never downloaded this ***** if I knew it weren't free.
- ntrsfrml, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4How do I remove WiFind from my computer?
It's pretty easy. Just move the "WiFind.bundle" from the "/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/" folder to your Trash, and restart your Mac. - Zakir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Wow. That looks identical to gnome network manager
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6@sweintraub, it should be noted that WPA itself has not actually been cracked. All that's happening is that weak passwords are being guessed through automated trial and error. As long as you have a password that is both random (not in the dictionary) and very long, your network should be safe with even the weakest form of WPA.
While I'm on the subject, some other things to note are that MAC addresses can be spoofed, hidden SSIDs can be seen with a packet sniffer, WEP can be cracked within two minutes (regardless of password strength), and with a good antenna (on their end) a person can be literally a mile away and still connect to your network. - t0ny, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Kismet/kismac never has been able to crack wep. Your thinking about aircrack or some other tool.
- dance, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@t0ny
...wrong.
@nonokiaboy
A beta build I found in the depths of the Kismac website does work with Apple cards in passive mode, yes, but the Newsham attack no longer seems to work and I've never had any success with any of the other methods - bakingoven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3How can I uninstall this? If I knew I had to pay $8 to find free wifi hotspots I'd never install this thing.
- CritCol, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Nice idea, but it's $8 and a pain in the ass to get rid of. If you Spotlight for it, you'll find all the files (hopefully). It also slows down the Airport menu a bunch. Lame-O.
- standsolid, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5This compliments istumbler well.
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4@PathDaemon: Do you even know what copyright is? And if you meant patent violation, do you actually think that this is patented? Hell, if it was, Network Manager (that little network icon in the Notification Area of Ubuntu 7.04), which is pretty much the same as this, would be long gone.
- hadimirza, on 03/26/2008, -1/+3it's the missing plugin for Mac OS X
- c_2_g, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2$8!!! boo
- gheide, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's weird... WiFind.org is a hotspot locater
- stalefries, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I want to point out that several of the menus, windows, interfaces, etc, that are part of Network Manager were, *ahem*, heavily inspired by Apple's Airport menu. Not trolling or anything, but Airport was there first. Also, I used NM before I ever used a Mac.
- PathDaemon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Tiny button in about window.
- jlassman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2From WiFind's FAQ: (http://www.tastyapps.com/wifind_faq.html)
Q: How do I remove WiFind from my computer?
A: It's pretty easy. Just move the "WiFind.bundle" from the "/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/" folder to your Trash, and restart your Mac. - firsttube, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's probably one of my biggest pet peeves about OS X. Damn Airport menu taking 5 friggin seconds to open. Stalefries, you don't know how right you are.
- jiggawoot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"An error occured during the Stuff operation.
Error #17535"
Pfft. Think I'll stick with kismet. - OdinEye, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I'm digging this primarily for the links above to iStumbler. I tried both of them right after reading this article, and found that, while it's really cool that wifinder shows up in the wireless menu, iStumbler has the advantage of both being free, and of providing quite a bit more additional information.
I can see where wifinder would be useful to average person not wanting to have to go through each network option to rule out the secure networks, but when you've been doing this a while iStumbler seems to be the more useful of the pair. - iRoy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I think everyone who commented this can agree that there is a much better free alternative out there, my choice right now is AirPort Radar, it's a widget that I don't use often but it does the same thing.
I would/should/will bury this as spam because it's a bloody shareware app., who needs those anyways? - AlfaWolph, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Agreed. Buried as spam.
- dpogni, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2hook up the serial
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2You'd think this kind of functionality wouldn't require a 3rd party app. Nice.
- stelriah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1http://www.macwireless.com/html/products/accessories/wifinder.php
- TriZz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3KisMac is great, if you're running not using an Intel Mac. I have a MacBook, and that ***** doesn't work for me :(
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@mattinchicago: Unfortunately, Windows doesn't have that feature built in. There may, however, be some third party software I don't know about that adds it, and perhaps some wireless card maker has a driver that does this.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Someone seriously wants me to pay for a small inputmanager hack that could possibly open unforseen security issues just so I can get some minimalist icons added to the airport menu? Get real guys.
There are numerous dashboard widgets and applications that give you much more wifi info and functionality, they're free, and they don't require hacking the system.
As other's have stated, coconutWiFi is much better. - zmigliozzi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1good find but there are plenty others out there, but whatever fits your needs.
- dance, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0@TriZz
