- Cronikeys, on 05/05/2009, -0/+9Next: real helicopters.
...or a video on YouTube of a cat in a RC Helicopter being controlled by an iPhone. - ima007, on 05/05/2009, -0/+9Dugg for "That is a sensitive bitch right there."
- bcassner, on 05/04/2009, -0/+7Now that is just too cool! I was impressed how he programmed the software for this, makes me want to learn how to fly an RC helicopter, instead of flying my trusty RC planes.
- inactive, on 05/05/2009, -1/+7like you could do better
- dvsbastard, on 05/05/2009, -0/+6I would have like to see more of the flight interface on the iPhone... as it stands I am still a little sceptical about it all... I don't want to be a dick about, but the internet has taught me to always be very suspicious of such things until I find more information...
To the google-mobile! - woofers07, on 05/05/2009, -0/+6Less talkie more flyie.
- bizkit00, on 05/05/2009, -1/+6omg, someone finally invented the remote control! oh wait, phew, at&t doesn't serve the cave (really? singular?) in Afghanistan.
- oda1, on 05/05/2009, -0/+4I wish I was a smart white guy with loads of time :(
- Regulator980, on 05/05/2009, -0/+4Reminds me of this fake that made it to the Front Page back in March:
http://digg.com/motorsport/Lewis_Hamilton_Controls ... - roosterjm2k2, on 05/05/2009, -0/+4While the concept would be cool... it's fake...
And no, im not the normal "FAAAkKKE" guy...
But, here's why it's fake.
First, he demonstrates no method of control for yaw (rudder). Hovering, even with great gyros, requires constant attention to the rudder, especially on smaller birds. Larger helies you can get lazy with the rudder in a hover, but not something like he's flying.
Second, the tail is facing the camera. In a hover, the easiest orientation is tail-in. Hovering with the bird turned 45 degrees to the side is more difficult, and you wouldn't be doing that in a test of a new system like this.
Third, comparing his movement in the intro of the video to what how much hes moving around, hes way over-controlling that heli for as smooth as it's hovering. Inputs in hover are VERY small... you couldn't get the accuracy in the iphone's accelerometer. The accelerometer is very "unstable"... if you output raw data you will see all 3 axis moving all the time, even with the phone still... you have to dull that down to make it really usefull, but it doing so you "numb" the input... not something that would be good for flying
Lastly... he dodges real questions from people in heli forums... he posted in one, then when asked technical questions he either ignores them or gives the most vague answers possible... - skunkman62, on 05/05/2009, -0/+4what else is cool, you can unlock a car door with a cellphone.

in other words, this all fake - manningbc, on 05/05/2009, -0/+3he has a very "Gordon Ramsey" style of wrap-up to him.
- fusen, on 05/05/2009, -0/+3hahaha, I couldn't actually make it out until the very end of the video when there is a zoomed in picture but it's actually a normal sized router stuck onto the bottom of an RC plane o.0
- EmperorChow, on 05/05/2009, -0/+3Dr. Horrible!?
- JaredMonkey, on 05/05/2009, -0/+3Interesting video along with a cool explanation as well. I can't imagine the iPhone (or any accelerometer based controller) to be a real replacement for conventional controls, but cool nonetheless. Fun project with off the shelf components indeed!
- Octanum, on 05/05/2009, -0/+2Haha, it was really strange for some reason.
- EPeters, on 05/05/2009, -0/+2Dugg for the video. The dude knows how to fit everything necessary into 2 minutes of video and not bore us with the outtakes.
- ezmac, on 05/05/2009, -0/+2not as exciting as i had envisioned, but still pretty awesome
- SHv2, on 05/05/2009, -0/+2do a barrel roll...
- UselessTrivia, on 05/05/2009, -0/+2If you read the site, apparently his uncle is Ian Ziering (from 90210). He got married to some ridiculously hot porn star and then divorced, but she kept the name.
So at least it's not a blood relative. - ruiner32, on 05/05/2009, -0/+2pretty sure it was pitch, not bitch.
- enigmabomb, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1So... my submission was stolen by a power user ... now I know how that feels. It sucks!
- Shawno1, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1This is awesome! I wanna try this someday when i buy an RC helicopter.
- GoKings, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1Seems cool but pretty impractical. Has anyone ever tried to fly a remote-controlled helicopter? It is very hard and depending on how good they are have a pretty long learning curve (usually takes a few hours to stop crashing every single time).
- truck87bp, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1Way kewl, our Troops could use that little helli and drop grenades from a block or two away from harm. Even cooler if it had a cam.
- Fletchnuts, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1Interesting stuff and hats off to the guy. That said, I can't see this as being a viable option for anyone outside of fixed pitch RC helo flying.
- redphive, on 05/05/2009, -3/+4This is a nice video, but it feels very fake
* Image of the App is edited from here: http://kottkegae.appspot.com/images/iphone-paralle ...
* no depth to the article, there has to be more to controlling a servo with an ethernet port... how was the port selected? What pins on the RJ45 connector are used with the IC?...
* Flying a RC Helo is not an easy task and going to a totally foreign control method, and this is the first result? Doubt it
* No other detailed 'hacks' on his site.
* Why are we tunneling this through SSH?
* xCode vs xDev?
Seems like a nice try, but I wouldn't be sold on this until I saw a little more detail. There is enough creativity to actually accomplish the original idea - crash331, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1That's why I went Coaxial->Fixed Pitch-> AIRPLANES
lol - Astaro, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1That looks like a trex-450, which is definitely a collective-pitch machine.
Not that I'd want to try doing 3d with that control setup, but.... - swook, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1But my Nokia has been able to do this since blah, blah, blah.
- Pahtcub, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1How do you control collective/throttle? Is the mixing built into the iphone?
- LugaZap, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1I used to have an RC chopper, man I miss that *****. Had a video camera on it too.
- thisismydigg, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1is there an app for that.... i see
- IllBeBack, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1I like the part in the video where it says the guy is from MyAuntIsHot.com.
Is this guy gittin' some from his Aunt? Uh, eww... - Fletchnuts, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1That's my point. Although he demos this on a 450, the real application lies with much simpler machines.
- bhuntsbarger, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1"talks the most, says the least" he could have summed this up in a few sentences.
- NRay7882, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1Nerd alert.
- wjlaw100, on 05/05/2009, -1/+1Which one of the buttons on the interface calls your mom to come pick up you and your busted helicopter?
- Kaegro, on 05/05/2009, -1/+1Because its awesome.
- racerx8413, on 05/05/2009, -0/+0What happens when you forget to turn on airplane mode and you get a call?
- kajitox, on 05/05/2009, -0/+0sooo this lets me use the iphone for an rc heli like my sister used the n64 controller in mariokart. i approve.
- lofilotek, on 05/05/2009, -1/+1I've been told the tail is really serious.
- Hillcar66, on 05/05/2009, -0/+0Sorry to hear that. I found your original submission and digged it.
- diggku, on 05/13/2009, -0/+0This is maybe the next generation to control our rc airplanes
http://digg.com/educational/RC_Helicopter_Forum - bradleyland, on 05/05/2009, -1/+1The whole thing wreaks of *****. RC helis are incredibly difficult to fly. The latency of a WiFi connection alone would make it next to impossible to control.
- ewillyp, on 05/05/2009, -1/+0can you say "iDrone"
- rnawky, on 05/05/2009, -3/+1Grats, your first comment with a digg count higher than 1 or 2.
- therightscoop, on 05/05/2009, -2/+0"now that is one sensitive bitch!"
was his girlfriend there? - inactive, on 05/05/2009, -6/+1The iPhone shouldn't be called an iPhone.. It should be called an iComputer with phone call making capabilities.
