- bigsheldy, on 11/12/2009, -45/+137Confirmed: Apple locks down software so that people pay ridiculous prices for sub-par hardware
- megamod, on 11/12/2009, -6/+65Why do I feel like I just read another article just yesterday that said "Confirmed: Atom netbooks run latest OS X"?
Oh because I did: http://digg.com/d3197kA
damn flip flopping sensationalist stories...get your facts straight. - brbeaird, on 11/12/2009, -9/+56There's a difference between outright disabling hardware (when it previously was working) and "not supporting" it.
- badqat, on 11/12/2009, -2/+37Indeed, my Dell Mini will have to stay at 10.6.1. At least until a fix is available.
Oh well. Horror of horrors this is not.
Unless, of course, you were silly enough to upgrade knowing the reports already said atom support was killed in the developer release. Then, perhaps, you're a bit upset. - mkriss5681, on 11/12/2009, -36/+69Enjoy your 5% marketshare on your over priced PCs.
- JoeNaguib, on 11/12/2009, -50/+78Another reason not to buy anything Apple.
- MacParrot, on 11/12/2009, -31/+59Um...not supporting a processor you don't use in any of your current hardware isn't the same as "locking" down the software.
- MScrip, on 11/12/2009, -14/+40I don't think Apple is going to miss you... if all you were gonna do is install OSX on a Dell Mini.
:) - yttrstein, on 11/12/2009, -16/+42Confirmed: Apple removes support for something they never supported in the first place.
- jv2k, on 11/12/2009, -3/+22I'm not an apple fan but all this complaining is moronic. Apple doesn't support that hardware, their closed approach to everything is one of the things I hate about the company but that's just the way things are. Instead of wasting time forcing the OS to run on hardware it wasn't designed to support I don't buy it. If the security and viruses bug you that much install ubuntu or linux mint.
The whole hackintosh netbook movement seems kinda fanboyish to me. It's like how people whine that the iphone doesn't things like multitasking or that AT&T sucks in there area but refuse to just get an android or palm pre. - Giac, on 11/12/2009, -3/+20I heard there's a solution. If you don't update the kernel when getting 10.6.2 the intel atom is still supported
- artinge3, on 11/12/2009, -2/+19Wow big deal. You don't need the newest OS on your netbook. It's a ***** netbook.
All you do is surf the web and show your friends how cool your little pice of ***** is.
10.5.8 works great on mine and i'm happy. - Orbital101, on 11/12/2009, -5/+21No matter how much of a free thinker you are, you cannot cry foul when a company does what it says it's going to do.
Apple offers a guarantee where, if you buy OS X, it'll work on Apple machines. They promise nothing else. They don't offer anything else.
I'm a little puzzled by those who think Apple owe it to you to support machines they don't make or sell... but downright stupefied by people who say they won't buy Apple products anymore because Apple won't help them use OS X on non-Apple products.
I mean, really: What is it you think you're entitled to, exactly? - Chewie67, on 11/12/2009, -12/+28In a related story, Microsoft disconnects 600,000 XBox 360 users who have modded their system.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8354166.stm
Bottom line: Hardware and Software companies don't like you to use their stuff in ways they aren't prepared to support. They build terms in the EULA to try and force this, and when that doesn't work, they take a more hands-on technical approach. - neutron7, on 11/12/2009, -12/+26people who might have decided to buy a mac because they had warezed OSX on their netbook.
2009: some.
2010: none.
amount people dislike apple because of lockdowns
2009: many
2010: even more. - Yuusharo, on 11/12/2009, -3/+16This is *STILL* a freaking story? 10.6.2 works JUST FINE on an Atom notebook. You simply have to either use an older kernel or patch a custom 10.6.2 kernel that does have support. All this means is Atom hackintosh users have to use patched kernels just like AMD users.
This story is laughably silly on its face. - anonymous10, on 11/12/2009, -1/+12What the hell are you attempting to imply? That your local supermarket is running 98? Selling 98? Because I'll bet neither is true.
Enjoy being so vain and thin skinned that reality hurts like hell. - chingy1788, on 11/12/2009, -0/+11If its small and cheap a netbook it is
- DonCarcharo, on 11/12/2009, -4/+15And yet virtually no one uses it on the desktop. A true mystery.
- ftc08, on 11/12/2009, -0/+11*****. I once got linux running on my cat.
- newbill123, on 11/12/2009, -3/+13While Apple intentionally does some crazy things, I can't get behind the mob on this.
If I get a copy of Snow Leopard working on the SPARC chip, that doesn't mean Apple will deem me a supported platform. Since no Mac has ever used the Atom processor, we can't even tell if this incompatibility with Atom was originally intentional or just fallout from a different change in the (pretty ***** huge) update.
But now that the outraged gang of hackers has drawn media publicity and made this the new battle front for getting Apple to separate their software and hardware, it will certainly remain broken in the future. A future headline like "Apple Welcomes Hackintosh Users with Support" is now going to be anathema to them.
I'm not saying I like this result, but blaming the quality of the 10.6.2 update is futile. Psystar has a better chance of turning this around in court, if you want separation of Apple hardware and software. - neutron7, on 11/12/2009, -5/+15obviously 10 years at least, show me some 10 year old macs that still perform useful work.
- Braxo, on 11/12/2009, -8/+18Umm, you can use Apple computers any way you want.
They don't stop you from removing Mac OS X and installing windows or your OS of choice on their hardware. - UV0001, on 11/12/2009, -24/+33Dear Apple,

█████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████ - TrancePhreak, on 11/12/2009, -1/+10That article is talking about the beta. The final patch disables it. Apple is the one flip-flopping.
- monkeyrun, on 11/12/2009, -2/+10Where did you get the idea that Apple users are pissed off at OSx86 users.
They are mostly pissed off at Psystar, OSx86 community should be also.
What psystar's doing will eventually push apple to authenticate the software and hardware each and every step of the way. - krisrm, on 11/12/2009, -2/+10...but despite "never supporting" it, they never explicitly broke compatibility until now. It's perfectly within their rights to do so, but it's also pretty irritating to those working on OSX86
- UnaClocker, on 11/12/2009, -0/+8There are two very very simple solutions. You can either stick with the 10.6.1 kernel. You'll be able to continue to get security updates and all the other software updates. Or, you can switch to the open source Darwin kernel known as Voodoo.. And again, you'll be able to update no problem. Easy fix.
- MacParrot, on 11/12/2009, -8/+16That's very true br, but I was commenting on big saying that they "locked it down". As long as OSX86 was fringe, Apple did very little to prevent them from pretty much installing OS X on whatever they saw fit. Now Psystar in its death throes releases software that makes it easier to cut Apple's hardware out (more to it than that obviously but I don't want to go off TOO much on a tangent) and it's becoming an annoyance. Especially when articles come out every other week explaining exactly how to install OS X on various netbooks. The Atom processor is an easy target since Apple currently doesn't use them so, it was simple enough to disable support for it.
The OSX86 is a crafty bunch (and I don't mean that in a disparaging way) and they'll figure out how to get around it, but in the meantime it won't be such a casual thing to install OS X on some non-Apple hardware. Apple isn't stupid and I'm sure they are as aware of this as I am. The point is if you're doing something that is questionable in a legal sense, it isn't very bright to call attention to it without figuring out that there could be a backlash. I'm talking about Psystar not OSX86.
In the meantime creating your own hackintosh remains easy to do on other X86 hardware so it isn't actually locked down. - non00b, on 11/12/2009, -3/+11If you are running a hackintosh, you already decided not to buy apple,
- ThreeDee912, on 11/12/2009, -1/+9It seems like this all stems from what Psystar is trying to do.
Apple obviously knows about the OSX86 project, and they haven't made any blatant attempts to stop it, except for maybe one DMCA notice (that they never really acted on) a few years ago. They also don't seem to care too much about stopping the hackers/modders/enthusiasts from making Hackintoshs because they realize they don't really lose much (if anything) from people using OS X in this way. (Compare that to the MPAA/RIAA)
Although most of OS X is proprietary, they have made many great open source contributions. WebKit powers Chrome and Palm's OS and the Android browser, and obviously Safari and the iPhone browser (not exactly a fan of the iPhone, FYI). Grand Central (or whatever it's called) makes it easier for developers to make multi-processor aware programs. OpenCL will help programmers take advantage of GPU processors easier. Heck, they were even a major developer of the CUPS printing backend.
Plus, Psystar seems to be actively dissing the OSX86 community while attempting to make more money:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/11/psystar-founder ...
"[Psystar's founder] Rudy scoffs at the idea he borrowed from the Hackintosh scene. "The first thing you have to do is unlearn everything you've read online about how to make this work," Rudy says, "because it's all wrong."" - prodigitalson, on 11/12/2009, -1/+9Apparently anything... and everything... for free.
- Orbital101, on 11/12/2009, -2/+10So what you're saying is: You're not going to buy something from Apple because they don't make it easy for you to use something not sold by Apple?
- anonymous10, on 11/12/2009, -3/+11Removing existing support when a large home-brew community is already utilizing it is most definitely 'locking out.'
- Orbital101, on 11/12/2009, -1/+9Even for a Linux fan, that comment was a real stretch of logic.
- Evilblobs, on 11/12/2009, -5/+12And nothing of value was lost...
- Orbital101, on 11/12/2009, -2/+9"Nobody thinks they're entitled to anything"
You might want to re-read the thread. - alexkorova, on 11/12/2009, -3/+10This doesn't mean Apple made a decision to remove support for Atom, they could've slipped in some code that's not compatible with Atom and without testing on Atom they wouldn't know.
- zb0430, on 11/12/2009, -8/+15Logical move for them. Why would Apple allow that to continue? There is no legitimate reason to do so from a business standpoint. They're getting very arrogant at Apple (as they have been for a while), because they are in a position to do so. And you'll still see market share growth, and record profits, and Apple growth.
They're not interested in market share. They're interested in profit, image, allure, and making innovative products. Allowing their OS to run into the wild like they have thus far with the Hackintosh scene is not something that will continue for long, methinks. This is step one. - anonymous10, on 11/12/2009, -2/+8Of only a free OS targeted squarely at netbooks was available.
http://www.canonical.com/projects/ubuntu/unr - bigsheldy, on 11/12/2009, -3/+9I think if anything osx86 users should be rooting for Psystar. Their anti-trust lawsuits are exactly how most of the community feels. People WANT to pay for osx, Apple just doesn't want people to know that their OS can run on hardware that's insanely cheaper than what they put in shiny aluminum cases and sell at the Apple Store.
- skippy2012, on 11/12/2009, -12/+18Uh, ubuntu?
At least they aren't dicks about everything like Apple. Besides, if you're running on a netbook, you're not going to be running Photoshop or Pro Tools, you're probably surfing the web... so there's no reason not to use ubuntu. Better use of limited screen space anyway (because you can change the window borders to be smaller, change fonts, etc.... which Apple also won't let you customize) - specialK16, on 11/12/2009, -4/+10@MacParrot:
"nd it's becoming an annoyance. Especially when articles come out every other week explaining exactly how to install OS X on various netbooks. "
Why exactly is it that some Apple users are getting pissed off at OSx86 users. I see the same trend against iPhone jailbreakers. - anonymous10, on 11/12/2009, -3/+8Because you're not savvy enough to realize that generalization is simply untrue.
- ThantiK, on 11/12/2009, -2/+7"Hardware and Software companies don't like you to use their stuff in ways they aren't prepared to support."
It's not like anyone here is pretending to need/want support for custom modifications they perform...that's EXACTLY the point. Did you buy the hardware? -- IS IT YOURS? -- Then you should be free to do with it whatever you please. Is OS X yours? - well, that's kind of a mixed bag. Is XBOX-LIVE yours? - No. That's why they are allowed and accepted to be able to restrict you from those things - kaidovak, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5A patch will be written. I kind of wonder what's happened to the hackintosh crowd, though. I used to run 10.4 on my AMD X2 system and had to toss all kinds of modified kernel extensions into the installer to get it to work at all, let alone work well. Have people been having this done for them for awhile or something?
- prodigitalson, on 11/12/2009, -1/+6You seem to think this is an intentional thing directly targeted to prevent non-apple systems from running the software. I see no direct evidence of this in the article nor have I in any article on this topic. Is completely possible that there was a revision software that needed to be made or was scheduled to be made for whatever issue that doestn work correctly with ATOM processors. Would you have them hold back updates to support an un-supported processor?
- Zippo, on 11/13/2009, -1/+6Thanks, I do. And will continue to. And you feel free to enjoy your Windows or Linux PC. I frankly don't care what you run.
- PhairOh, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5so... which is it?
- GothAlice, on 11/12/2009, -4/+9Yet again, people are being morons. It's not your software, it's Apple's. Apple can do with it what they want. Apple has no interest in attempting to support netbooks at this time, so they disable it to prevent PIRACY. Installing Mac OS X on a machine not of Apple's making is against the license agreement you agree to by installing the software. People are bitching about a company legitimately attempting to stifle THEFT.
Microsoft use serial numbers; I'm glad Apple hasn't begun using such annoying devices.
I'm going to get dug down hard on this one, but seriously people, shut the ***** up. -
