'Droid - Darthyoshiboy, on 10/29/2009, -8/+34Given how heavy handed Apple has been with Google these days, I hope that Google takes the kid gloves off, says no Nav on iPhone and starts to apply some hurt.
Android FTW! - nullcodes, on 10/29/2009, -0/+16Umm, it doesn't have turn by turn directions and rerouting etc. like a full fledged GPS app. I own an iPhone 3GS, I tried to use it as a GPS but the software in it is not the same as having a proper GPS.
- czarcasm, on 10/29/2009, -0/+12Wrong,that would be the baby shaker app.
- Rev0lver, on 10/29/2009, -2/+11Famous last words...
- thesportoflife, on 10/29/2009, -0/+8"Google is working with Apple on bringing it to the iPhone, and it's not ruling out licensing the software to makers of portable navigation devices used in cars throughout the world, said Gundotra, vice president of engineering at Google for mobile and developers."

There, fixed it for you.
You're welcome. - WELLDOITLIVE, on 10/29/2009, -1/+8Can't start with spaces, use periods like women do

.../_ \ /_\ - beelz, on 10/29/2009, -2/+7Google Maps Navigation iPhone app anytime soon?
- krisrm, on 10/29/2009, -0/+5Who says Google is going to submit it to the app store? Why not leave it as an Android-only feature, especially after what Apple's already been doing to Google with the app approval process?
- jwblackwell, on 10/29/2009, -0/+5If Apple don't allow this then they can kiss goodbye to the iPhone.
- spazzcat, on 10/29/2009, -0/+5Most of these internet nav apps cache your maps when you start your trip
- Corona85, on 10/29/2009, -1/+5What about Motion X GPS Drive?
- spazzcat, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4If your in heavy traffic good chance your in a city. I don't of many cities that don't have cell coverage.
- ObamaYouth, on 10/29/2009, -10/+14Real drivers don't need GPS.
- jwblackwell, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4I wouldnt blame them if they did that. It would definitely pull the smartphone market away from apple a little bit.
Apparently they are in talks with Apple to get Navigation working on iPhone though. The articles somewhere on digg.. - BigLou, on 10/29/2009, -1/+5I love how pissed the iPhone community is in reaction to Google Navigator currently only available on Android 2.0. Oh well, the iPhone OS will eventually be swept up by Android.
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4I realize now that I ***** up and made his head too skinny by forgetting the intermediate periods, *****.
- Nhmarine, on 10/29/2009, -1/+4When your mental processes fail you, there is only one solution: google.
Google, and you shall receive. - digitalpencil, on 10/29/2009, -0/+3for future reference you can use non-collapsing whitespace
i.e 'this' - centran, on 10/29/2009, -1/+4I switched to Sprint from US Cellular(good company for voice. bad data plans).
I got the new Android Hero and thought I would want to remove the Sprint Navigator to gain space but I must say... it is pretty damn good. The speech isn't fully integrated like Google but it will call a number and let you speak a destination then upload it back to your phone.
I am sure the new google map app will blow the Sprint Navigator out of the water but I was pleasantly surprised with it. I thought it would be garbage. The fact that they don't charge for it is another plus. However, I think they just don't charge for it as a kick in the balls to AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. Lately, the cell phone providers really seem like they are going after each other like politicians do. - digitalpencil, on 10/29/2009, -0/+3couldn't agree more, it'd be great to see this app come to the iPhone but hopefully if Google play hardball, Apple will loosen the ropes around the appstore a little..
that said, i think Apple recently invested (bought out) a small mapping company so you can bet your ass they have some grandiose plans in the pipeline for this.. i for one grab popcorn and await the explosions. - thebrowndigger, on 10/29/2009, -0/+3Remember, it's never good to skip your periods.
- nullcodes, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2a) I am sure eventually it will allow downloading the entire map set (gonna guess 2GB typically for the whole US .. which is a few hours with most people's broadband and can happen in the background during low internet usage ..thereafter updates can be small). The Navigon app is 2GB and many people have been downloading and using that. A system with real time updates of the maps is far better, what happens when roads are temporarily closed?
b) moot point when it lets you download the entire map set - mesomorphicman, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2"anti-Apple"
- andrew77uk, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2Not knowing enough about the technical side, I do know that the maps app works very very well on the iPhone 3G, if they are using this for the foundation, I have high hopes for this. Question is, will there be a cost? I am expecting not...but if they release this for free, and meets up to expectations, other GPS companies could well be in trouble.
- rusty0101, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1Nahh, they like MP3's just fine.
- pappy97, on 10/29/2009, -1/+2Seriously, there NEEDS to be a comparison to Motion X GPS Drive, the best iphone GPS nav app in terms of bang for your buck.
- mister711, on 10/30/2009, -0/+1Michael Scott does not need GPS
- Corona85, on 10/29/2009, -1/+2:|
- MrJagil, on 10/29/2009, -3/+4I'm rooting for the iPhone, and even i hope google starts to apply some hurt :)
- mesomorphicman, on 10/29/2009, -3/+3Relax... Google already said they are in talks with Apple to possibly put on iPhone, so push your little anit-Apple erection back down.
- inactive, on 10/29/2009, -1/+0Stupid! The entire point of having a portable gps aware map is just that. No wires, contracts, laptops or cell towers needed. Just a pocketable screen (solar powered to be sure).
When & if a worldwide free cellphone data grid is, just that, free AND accessible, then & only then would this be actually useful.
On my winmo phone tomtom works excellent up until you remove the sim or disable it. iGuidance on the other hand works almost better even without the sim. - DCstewieG, on 10/29/2009, -2/+1I bought the Pre without even considering Sprint Navigation but it is awesome. And combined with the Pre's multi-tasking (zing!) I can run it, Pandora, and my wife can look up something online all at the same time. Pandora fades out really nicely when the GPS is talking, it works great. Not to mention it's included with the plan. I don't even know if the Google app could "blow it out of the water," it's pretty much all I need.
- grumpyrain, on 10/29/2009, -2/+1Don't GPS drivers need real?
- MattBlackCat, on 10/29/2009, -3/+1GPS abv. n.
1. A navigational device for the impatient and illiterate to aid movement whilest remaining impatient and illiterate.
2. Your dad - Perleeeze, on 10/29/2009, -3/+1From what I've learned subsequently, it downloads live over the Internet with no map caching.
Cell data speeds are not good enough for satnav map updates, as I have already said. Plus most people don't live in the US strangely enough and mobile Internet is poor even in the US outside the major cities.
So, I repeat - doomed to fail. - spazzcat, on 10/29/2009, -3/+1Who said these are the most used iPhone Nav programs? I use Waze (free), MotionX ($2.99, with voice $25 a year).
- migitalwarfare, on 10/29/2009, -4/+1You expect a cell phone nav system to work well in a city? With reflected and blocked GPS signals, and patchy data networks from all the buildings, you'll certainly have some fun watching your icon bounce around the screen, but you won't find a good route to where you want to go.
- Perleeeze, on 10/29/2009, -5/+1<s> That's useful when you decide to change destination en route or go around heavy traffic </s>
- numberneal, on 10/29/2009, -12/+7the g'll have 'em for breakfast.
- Corona85, on 10/29/2009, -11/+5Because the sole point to owning a phone is to have it strictly for GPS purposes.
- numberneal, on 10/29/2009, -11/+4the g'll have em for breakfast.
- Perleeeze, on 10/29/2009, -8/+1Nice idea but this is doomed to fail for obvious reasons.
a) Most mobile Internet connections are too slow to push the map images and data in realtime when travelling in a car at high speed. I know because I've tried using Google Maps in enough countries.
b) 3G/EDGE/GPRS coverage is at best patchy in most countries. Especially where you need satnav the most - in remote places you don't know well.
So the comparison is apples vs oranges, as it were and is as applicable to the real world as moving sidewalks or Segway mobile transporters.
I think I'll stick with a system that already has the maps and routing stored on the phone thanks. - azpat, on 10/29/2009, -13/+1are you guys using a different iPhone than me? I could have sworn that I have seen street-view in the Google maps app for iPhone.
