- Bryn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The RSS feed for people who don't use iTunes:

http://feeds.themerlinshow.com/themerlinshowhi - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Looking forward to it, I just wished, now that iTunes allows better video resolution (640x480) that more video podcasters would take advantage of that. I mean if David Pogue can get video at 1.6Mbps, why is Cranky Geeks only 484kbps. And judging by the measly 321kbps the short pre introduction video for this Merlin Show is, I hope the episodes aren't of better quality. To me when watching a video podcast quality matters.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Mistake typo - excuse me "aren't" was meant be to "are". I really do hope Merlin reads this cause personally I think it's important.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Ireland - Cranky Geeks doesn't need more than 500Kbps for 640x480 video. There's no motion, the background is all black. To use any more bits would be unnecessary and wouldn't increase the picture quality in any meaningful way. If they shot it in HD, they could use more bits. The only reason they should consider producing that show in HD is if they're going to make Natalie Del Conte a regular guest. Until then, I'll be OK with Dvorak in SD.
The real problem with Cranky Geeks (and DLTV) is that for some reason they produce the shows with no contrast. The blacks are totally gray. I'm not sure if they don't know what they're doing, or they're trying to avoid compression problems, but it's really annoying. Their black is like 60% gray.
That has nothing to do with the 500Kbps bitrate, but that is something worth complaining about. - macmcrae, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Merlin is awesome. Every show he is on is the Mann Show. Rat holes and all.
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ireland: iTunes allows higher res. I'm pulling the high quality feed (above) and MacBreak 1080p feeds with itunes. They play just fine. The iPod has a size limit, but not itunes.

- digitalvision, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Merlin Mann is great - I want to know more about what will be on it. I assume by "30 theoretically productive frames per second" he means that it'll be video.
However, knowing as I do that NTSC video is 29.97 fps, not 30... does that mean that during the .03 frames I can be lazy (or unproductive?)- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Merlin is sometimes funny, but I'm not exactly clear what he does. Leo sometimes introduces him as some sort of expert on productivity, but what the hell does he produce? Does he have a real job or something? Is 43 Folders it?
- miniboss, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2"Merlin is sometimes funny"
Understatement of the year. If you throw 100 darts you're bound to hit the board once. I think Merlin is okay, but he tries waaaaay too hard to be clever. And now he's making it onto TWiT again this week so expect more "attempts at humor" rather than "discussion about tech", - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I think that he often succeeds at being clever. My question is, "How can he afford to eat?"
I know what Leo Laporte does. He must make pretty good money doing his podcasts, his radio show, Canadian "Call for Help", etc... Merlin Mann doesn't do that stuff. What does he do? What makes him qualified to be a panelist on TWiT, MacBreak, etc? Is he a journalist or something?
As far as I can tell he likes Macs and has read David Allen's book "Getting Things Done". He didn't even write the book. He talks about apps for OSX that help boost productivity, but he didn't write any of them either.
What the hell does he do? How does he make money? - PhantomC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apparently he makes his money from writing and productivity consulting/coaching
- endacrowley, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I wonder if this will be shot in HD (like MacBreak, although that was only 480) - since the download I got from iTunes was for the iPod, it would be great to see more video podcasts shot in High-Def.
- Wolfboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1there is a high-res version. use iTunes' "power search" for "Merlin" and you should find it pretty quickly.

- infectbda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Merlin said something on the last MacBreak Weekly about recording some video with Jonathan Coulton. I guess it's most likely for this new show.

He works for the ad dollar. Take a look at his federated media page. For every 1000 impressions, he gets $75.00 ($30 on the skyscraper, $10 on the button, $35 on the rectangle), plus $98.00 per one week text advert. Compete.com estimates that Merlin gets about 30k people daily, each taking in 3.1 pages, so 30 x 3.1 x 75 is $6975, even assuming Compete is out by 10 times, and he only does $697.50 a day, that's $254587.50 a year - Tanukid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh, I still think " The Merlin Mann show" sounds more catchy, but I can see why that wouldn't work for obvious reasons. ;)
- catheycawl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0nice story....liked it
- nandabanaotakun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Truly Merlin is the Mann.
