This is a point in the OS X exploit department, but when we're talking about iPods, you need to recheck your numbers. With the huge market share iPod has, it would be MOST desirable to "hack" it (whether you mean maliciously, as the concept you brought up implies, or to "customize" beyond the normal bounds, as this article means). - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Yeah. It also comes with a plethora of games and support for other audio codecs (ie FLAC) and video. Even video for most iPods. You can even switch between the original iPod firmware and Rockbox at your whim. It is geared more towards advanced users, though. It's at http://www.rockbox.org/

Some of us really think iPod is a music player having ease of use and massive memory. Nothing else. If Apple allows third party audio/video plugins in a legit way some day, I would buy but I am not hacking any of my devices. If you want some more advanced thing which may even run Linux natively, iPod isn't exactly a good choice.
Why? Well the smile at idiots face at Apple service center when I had to give my Quad G5 because of fan locking down could be enough for me. This isn't anything new, afaik its just another firmware hack for the ipod using ipod wizard (although the page is down for me so im going on what i saw on the engadget post) it isn't exactly a new program. iirc you can actually change the pictures and stuff.
More interesting is ipodlinux and http://rockbox.org/ which replace the entire firmware (with opensource). Although ipodlinux wasn't really usable last time i tried it, rockbox is nice and skinable though although you need to get used to a different system.
