NO. - logandurand, on 08/04/2008, -10/+82*looks in vain for buttons*
No tactile interface means this won't be able to "rule" anything needing precision or quick response time. Dedicated, gaming-oriented hardware is what makes mobile games like Advance Wars, Metroid Fusion, and Super Mario 64 DS fun and engaging. For me, the only games the iPhone will be running to my satisfaction are card games or the occasional Super Monkey Ball style game. - gerbco, on 08/04/2008, -15/+57hmm.. It doesn't properly run something that wasn't designed for it.. fascinating.
- sassy343, on 08/04/2008, -1/+39The general game market no. But the mobile game market yes. Its easy to develop for, and games are really easy to get. Also they are cheap.
- SoCalMario, on 08/04/2008, -32/+67No it can't. have you tried playing the NES emulator? not accurate at all.
- srodolff, on 08/04/2008, -12/+46Can the iPhone cure cancer?
Oh wait......the iPhone is a cellphone........oops. - drapelyk, on 08/04/2008, -4/+23For all you 'it has no buttons'-naysayers... ;)
http://www.icontrolpad.com/ Can't wait! - RichPowers, on 08/04/2008, -3/+21Like I'm going to trust Time for videogame analysis. This is the same magazine that put The Sims Online on its front cover claiming it represented the future of videogames. Btw, TSO completely shut down earlier this year.
- baldgye, on 08/04/2008, -14/+30as good as the iphone is... you need buttons... Sony have proven that a tilting controller is rubbish.
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -11/+27Currently Nintendo has buttons on all of their hardware.
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -7/+22The Nintendo DS already rules portable gaming, and it had a touch screen before the iPhone even existed.
A pretty neat phone it is, but rabid fanboyism isn't going to make it beat every other device it competes with and cure cancer. - Rudegar, on 08/04/2008, -6/+21does it run Crysis?
- Pliep, on 08/04/2008, -17/+31iPhone is the only mobile phone with PSP-quality processing power and graphics. It's the only mobile phone with accurate motion detection. So as far as I'm concerned it already rules mobile gaming.
No, it will never run those thousands of crap Java games, but will ignite a new style of mobile gaming with a new audience. - BashiBazouk, on 08/04/2008, -4/+18Good game design can over come a lack of buttons. The real problem is battery life. Those graphically intense games are thirsty and I'd like a functional phone when done playing...
- dbldn, on 08/04/2008, -4/+18No.
- Borgcube, on 08/04/2008, -1/+15Did Nintendo ever make anything for any console other then their own?
- galvo, on 08/04/2008, -2/+15Hell no.
- mooninite, on 08/04/2008, -6/+19Hm... A Nokia N95 can run a Nintendo emulator just fine. Perfect speed and games run reliably. No, I'm not BSing. Yes, I imagine I'll get dugg down due to the ignorance of all iphone users.
- luckyguy2000, on 08/04/2008, -3/+16no, it cant. period.
- mokinoie, on 08/04/2008, -2/+14IPhone Cheat Codes: Mute + Unmute + Vol Up + Vol Up + Vol Down + Home + Desperate wailing that there is no tactile interface + Vol Down
But seriously, the DS has sold almost 78 millions units, and the average person (according to the article) spends $65 dollars a year on it--and that's just the DS. No, the iPhone is never going to reach those numbers, because as great as it is to have some games on your phone while you wait somewhere or sit at work, it is not a gaming system, and people do not (and will not) buy it as a gaming system. Also, my DS doesn't charge me a minimum of $39.99 voice + $30 data per month. - monkeymad2, on 08/04/2008, -2/+13Wikipedia on PSP:
"The PSP uses a 333 MHz MIPS R4000 (32-bit) CPU, a GPU with 2 MB onboard VRAM running at 166 MHz, and includes 32 MB main RAM and 4 MB embedded DRAM."
Wikipedia on iPhone:
"620 MHz ARM 1176, underclocked to 412 MHz
GPU: PowerVR MBX 3D" "128 MB DRAM" - Harabeck, on 08/04/2008, -1/+11Its motion detection was specifically designed for its purpose. Theres a big difference between the wii-mote and actually having to look at the thing youre moving as you play...
- primal, on 08/04/2008, -1/+11No, it won't rule the gaming market. After the 2.0 update it can barely function as a phone without the battery draining... You can't run the mobile gaming market if you're constantly tethered to a charger.
- Purkake, on 08/04/2008, -0/+10And perhaps the hell will freeze over and the seas will run red with blood?
(Hint: Nintendo has their own handheld) - inactive, on 08/04/2008, -4/+13No
and go away please. - Harbinger1080, on 08/04/2008, -3/+12How long can you play Monkey Ball without turning off wifi, 3g, bluetooth and push (because, you know, that's the point of the damned thing)?
Not 5 hours... I'll also qualify myself with "I know that from experience." the iPhone is not primarily designed to play these games, and it shows especially in the battery life. When not playing games, I've gotten pretty decent life out of the thing-- about a day and a half between charges with light games, ipod usage, and a few hours of phone usage. - worminater, on 08/04/2008, -3/+12"sex is boring, i tried it" more apt. Buried.
- Dracusis, on 08/04/2008, -2/+10Clearly this person has never played Labyrinth on the iPhone. The tilting controls are second to none. I was genuinly surprised at the phone's ability to accurately and responsively measure minuscule changes in momentum, it's light years ahead of the crappy accelerometers in the six-axis.
- gllopc, on 08/04/2008, -0/+8It's plain and simple, though: there are a lot of iPhones in hands which don't also own a DS, or don't want to carry around multiple devices. Those people will want games, and so there's a large potential market for it.
- alex7575, on 08/04/2008, -7/+15No wonder the Wii's not doing as well as the PS3... Wait...
- ozid, on 08/04/2008, -1/+9Loco Roco on the iphone would own.
but thats just about it. - McMahon9, on 08/04/2008, -1/+9Nope!
- Mononuclear, on 08/04/2008, -9/+16One of these articles comes up every month. No the iphone is not going to rule gaming. It might have lots of games that people play (people play games on cell phones a lot too) but it will never be dominant in gaming. It will never be considered a gaming platform just like your nokia isn't a gaming platform even though you can play snake and bowling. I don't think any developers are going to take the iphone seriously.
- incandescent, on 08/04/2008, -0/+7I found it far too sensitive and difficult to control and it practically drained my battery in about half an hour. If SMB is the best the iPhone has to offer then no, it will not rule gaming.
- Phoenixfury, on 08/04/2008, -0/+7I don't think so, but they did license Zelda and Mario to Phillips.. After the butchering Phillips did to their characters, I don't blame Nintendo for not wanting to license their characters to anyone else again. As long as they have their own hardware, I don't see Nintendo putting their games on anything else.
- gllopc, on 08/04/2008, -4/+11Considering that the DS, and the Game Boys before it, sell more than their more powerful big screen opposites, I'd say that it could "rule" given proper development, money, interest and time. That doesn't mean that it would be king forever, though.
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -2/+8No, it wasn't designed for gaming in the first place, hell it wasn't designed to run 3rd party apps in the first place, the touch screen is appalling for playing games and the accelerometer is just as bad, i've got a lot of the "popular" games from the app store on my ipod touch and so far the only one thats worth playing is bejewelled, monkey ball sucks, its WAY to easy and way too short, want to know why the iphone will never be a match for the ds and psp, they were actually designed to play games, every single chip in them is there for that purpose, the games will always be infinitely better on either of them, the games have had alot more time and effort put into them.
- masterkenobi, on 08/04/2008, -2/+8For gaming, my DS > the iPhone.
The iPhone beats my DS in making phone calls though, hands down. - ForTheSteel, on 08/04/2008, -4/+10psp has a 333mhz processor.
iphone has 620mhz processor.
in terms of processing power, iphone kicks psp's ass. however, when it comes to control interface, the iphone doesnt stand a chance. - gllopc, on 08/04/2008, -0/+6I agree that I'm making that comparison; but that's irrelevant. A home PC plays games just as well as it writes Word documents. Plus, the fact that it already has games on it proves that it's capable.
- BruiserBob, on 08/04/2008, -2/+8Why take his word for it...why not take...oh say...John Carmack's word:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/01/carmack-says-ip ... - mlvassallo, on 08/04/2008, -1/+7Uh.... my guess is no.
The iPod Touch however- you know, the model without the monthly subscription fee and two year contract... maybe they should start focusing on that if they want a gaming device. - hmphargh, on 08/04/2008, -1/+71. Stop using stupid memes where they don't fit
2. ?????????
3. Aw. *****. I did it too. - rolandvvv, on 08/04/2008, -3/+8oooo! It can play bejeweled? I'm so going to pay for iPhone so I can play that!
- vsaint, on 08/04/2008, -1/+6I don't really see cellphones ever capturing the hardcore gaming audience (at least not in the next decade). Hopefully hardcore gamers are enough of a cash cow to warrant continuing to make games with depth. I doubt we will see mindblowing games coming out for cellphones in the foreseeable future.
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -0/+5I am a PSP developer. PSP uses 2, 333 MHz processors. Plus 2 GPUs, and another processor dedicated to sound. These 3 run at 166 MHz. PSP's game medium (UMD) also stores 1.8 gigabytes and is easily swappable without a lengthy install process requiring a PC.
PSP is more powerful, despite Carmack's claims (he is talking only about 1 of PSP's processors and ignoring the rest)
You will never see an iPhone game along the likes of Ace Combat/Killzone/Gurumin/God of War/FF7 Crisis Core or any other epic/hardcore game due to the lack of space for starters. - zadadka, on 08/04/2008, -0/+5Eh?
- jabberwocky360, on 08/04/2008, -0/+5I have an iPod touch and I will admit there are a few fun games on there. The best I have found is Galcon but I would never consider it a true gaming platform. It is gimmicky and entertains for a short while but it will never have a vast library of games that appeal to all different types of gamers.
- Aitese, on 08/04/2008, -0/+5But is repetitive and boring...read a review of the DS Harry Potter game that used a similar control interface to cast spells...it got old quick. The same with a version of Ninja Gaiden where you had to draw Japanese symbols for each move...good idea...quite boring in execution. In the end you end up just slashing at the screen.
- neodude237, on 08/04/2008, -0/+5The start button barley presses
