- avions, on 10/12/2007, -42/+149Dear iLounge,
New iPods are released in the Fall. You know better than anyone because you have been reporting them for the past several years. Go back to sleep until September and leave us the blog spam alone! - mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -5/+63Why does this guy have 52 diggs? He's absolutely wrong!
1st gen October 23, 2001
2nd gen July 17, 2002
3rd gen April 28, 2003
4th gen July 19, 2004
5th gen October 12, 2005 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38How come only one of them looks older than 20?
The only feature the 6g needs to compete with the iphone is "a crapload of storage". I have more than 8gb of music ... then there's movies. I'm sure I'm not alone. - giveer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+40Holy crap I'm dumb, I spent a good 10 or 12 seconds going "uhhh, they had 6 gig ipods like 4 years ago..." I'll just go back to humping the couch.. excuse me...
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23No it's not.
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21June will be iPhone, September will be 6th gen and 3rd gen nano.
They wont let the 6th gen iPod hurt the sales of the iPhone. - soupnrc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21I agree with fkr2, I've got like 30 gigs of music and 15 gigs of video. If they made the phone with more storage and kept it at about the same price that thing would make heaps of money. I would take my 5th Gen iPod right now over the iPhone just for storage space. The cool part about the iPhone is the music and movies part of it, so why would I switch to that phone when my cell phone works just fine. Give me a worthy selling point, cause pretty much 8gb of storage sure isn't it.
- TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19"What I want to know is, when will the 160GB model iPods come out?"
I think simply owning a 160GB iPod would make the RIAA sue you. - DeWallen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17"People who want a device that is primarily a music player are still very much attracted to the Click Wheel design of the current iPod"
I gotta agree with this. As a tech fan I want to see a full-touch screen iPod, but, I know it won't be the best user-interferace for me. I don't watch enough iPod movies to sacrifice my convenient wheel. Apple would have to create an unbelievably workable touch-OS that will work as well as the wheel when I'm using my iPod in the car or gym (my big 2 uses) - itsme92, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"People who have been holding out on replacing old iPods will be buying this one for sure."
Yep, that's me. My 4G's hard drive is starting to fail. I'm waiting for a 6G iPod to replace mine. - blurrie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12i just fixed my 5g. replaced face plate and replaced cracked screen. (really easy btw)
it's funny how scared ppl are of fixing stuff. i enjoyed doing it. and it cost me 40$ for a new lcd and brand new (unscratched) faceplate on ebay.
i don't know why a widescreen ala iphone looking ipod wouldn't be successful. and ipod the same size as the 5g as just one total screen (with hopefully a few more hours of batt life)... not succeeding? seriously? ooook.. perhaps they are just waiting for better advancements in the flash arena and totally leaving the dinosaur of the hard drive. if i could have a widescreen ipod w/ a fatty amount of flash, i'd buy.
as a response to the ppl who have hella music and video's like mine.. we are the minority. most ppl download one song from a band (usually the single) and thats it. they've never even heard of the term discography. the thing is though.. i know my ipod plays video. i tried watching diggnation when i first got it jan 06 and i didn't like it. i don't even think i'd watch vids on an iphone... mobile video doesn't really appeal to me. even widescreen it's just to small. in reality i don't even really watch videos on my macbook either. i use my ipod when walking or using it on my ihome. the only thing i could legitimatly see the ipod being a good video option is when it can be totally integrated into the home entertainment system as a pvr and what not.
the ipod is the cadillac of mp3 players and a social icon. 1 out of 3 ppl have one at my college. the white ear phones have been a fashion accessory since i started there in fall of 05. it's not going anywhere. job's is stalling so that all eyes are on the iphone. he doesn't want the press to take away from the iphone. if apple was to release an ipod that is even close to the iphone... ppl would ask themselves.. do i need this phone to replace my new 6g ipod and my razr? not really. but w/ i phone he is painting a picture of the next step. the next evolution. after that, the 6g can drop and not take any thing away what is.. "iphone". - atezun, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14"You've obviously never heard of DRM. Most people who buy multiple iPods do so because they have no choice. I have a 30GB one but when it breaks I'll probably look elsewhere. Since I'd rather cut my own hand off than buy DRM'd music I've got that option."
That is ridiculous. Pretty much every person I know besides me uses iTunes for their music management and out of those people about 90% of them that own mp3 players, own an iPod. Want to know how many of them that have bought something off of iTunes? One. Doesn't seem like a very effective lock-in there does it? Anyone else is completely free at anytime to switch away from iTunes or the iPod if they feel is doesn't match their needs. You may not be willing to pay $300 for an iPod or an additional $300 to replace it down the road, but it seems a lot of people are and very few of these people are locked in to iTunes and even then you're just a burn and rip away from freedom.
I hate DRM; however, I only find it to be an inconvenience rather than a show stopper. Still even for the average person I'd say the argument that the iPod has locked them in is ridiculous and I don't even like iTunes that much to begin with. (Amarok FTW) A user is more likely to be locked-in by peripherals than the iTunes store. I don't see everyone out there clamoring for every company out there that makes iPod accesories to make them compatible for every device. Also for the small percentage of the people who claim to be "locked-in" to the iPod. Apple revealed it's DRM scheme from the get-go with the iTunes store as did every online music store before and after them, none of them have suddenly taken away any freedoms from the user that they had when they started using the service (though the zune's wifi crippled songs may come a little close, but I think the labels are more to blame for that than MS) anyone that is "locked-in" chose to be. - retral, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13A new iPod would steal a lot of steam from the iPhone.. Apple wouldn't want to do that.
Regardless, a video ipod with a lot of storage and support for xvid/divx would be HUGELY successful. - MadOtaku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8For != 4
- claudiocarmona, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11My 4G died on me a week ago and I know I'm not going to buy a 5G to replace it. Going to crack it open, and slap on a new drive until the 6G iPods are released.
I need a larger iPod +100GB, widescreen... and that multitouch would be nice. - wush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7that's a funny definition of unlimited storage.
- wush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7why are you ignoring the iPhone's tiny capacity?
- greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Zens are awful. A bad firmware update caused mine (and many many other people's, from what I've read) to stop working until I could find a computer without WMP 11 or any Zen software on it to try to reinstall the player's OS. Ridiculous. iPods are much better and much more reliable.
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Why is everyone digging aywwts4 down? I love my ipod, but apple certainly has set them up to be replaced every few years. I remember I had a walkman and then a discman that lasted me until I out grew the medium they played. I'm sure in the basement somewhere I can still find a working walkman. Not to mention that a good discman/walkman only ran about 100 bucks. When my ipod dies I'm pretty set on replacing it with a non-apple product, just to break out of the cycle of paying apple $150/year average to use my mp3 player (sure another brand has the same problem but at least there's competition involved).
- easy4lif, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm gonna assume fall (october/november date) as well. that will give the iPhone a 3 to 4 month time to market and prep the device for xmas 08. I know my sister wants one, while I want a replacement for my ipod photo.
- fxspec06, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10***** the RIAA.
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16Why is everyone so complacent about a very expensive, supposedly high quality device which seems to fail with some regularity every couple of years. It seems like every Ipod fan has owned at least two of three.
Im not bashing apple, but it really seems odd how many people are perfectly fine with buying another 300 dollar gadget every couple of years. - r©ain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Huh?
- macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I know how you feel.
- atezun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'd say October is far more likely than September. Why? Because of Apple's "buy a mac, get an iPod" student deal during August and September, which I'd say pretty much nixes any chances of seeing a new iPod during that time frame or likely even two months before that. I'd honestly say may is the latest they'd release a new iPod before waiting till fall and with the iPhone launch there's no chance in hell of that happening. College students are a large market for apple, especially for iPod buys and though during their student deal they basically give them away, I doubt they'd feel so generous with a shiny new iPod model.
- DrGamez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'm glad you posted to tell us all how much you care.
- cthellis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"A user is more likely to be locked-in by peripherals than the iTunes store."
THANK you! Good lord, I've been saying that for ages. Followed by "it doesn't seem to slow anyone down that they'll switch to a new cell phone every two years or so, even though they'll need to repurchase a new case, car adaptor, an extra wall adaptor for work, spend time recreating their contact list, repurchasing any favorite ringtones..."
Music-wise, the ability to break iTunes' DRM is built right into iTunes, with barely a loss of fidelity. (Certainly I don't think it's noticeable compared to the quality the music is already at.)
If one has purchased a hundred dollars or more of total media... Well then sure, I can see that making an impact. But how many have purchased THAT MUCH from the store? How much of it is TV/movies only, which can't be trivially converted? - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually even as a Mac and Apple enthusiast, I haven't given much thought about buying an iPhone since the RDF wore off after the keynote. IMO, too big as a cell phone (which I use to make GASP calls) and too little storage to use as an iPod.
So far I haven't needed to carry lots of pictures (or needed to manipulate if I did), cell phone internet is slow and expensive, text messaging is for kids or business people on the go (I'm neither, office drone). Even when I did travel for work, there was few times that I absolutely needed internet access other than for entertainment. The iPhone 1st gen is a very expensive toy. Gen 2 will likely be better and may be the iPod replacement.
Oh, and somewitches. Lay off the caffeine. You'll feel better. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"competing devices"?
*lol*
I tell you one thing, that you know anyway: Nobody competes with Apple. Something that Apple hasn't released isn't relevant for the mainstream market. The moment Apple releases it, it's cool. Apple could have waited two years more for its iPhone and it would still have been a success, independent from a Zune Phone or other devices.
I say this without being an Apple fanboy. But it's the reality. Anything else isn't present. - Grimgrock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The video iPod is 30GB and 60GB (right?). Anyway, you would consider a device that holds 8GB a replacement for an iPod that holds over three times that much? I certainly wouldn't. The next iPod should be everything the iPhone is except with out the phone components. The smaller drive capacity should be 80GB with 160 as an option. Is we're really lucky it will be flash memory to help with battery life. Of course, a true wide screen rather than what's on the iPhone would be nice as well.
- blurrie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5actually i know i haven't been thinking about an iphone..
i have tmobile.. w/ another year on my contract.
and i HATE cingular. - johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5no, iPods exist today. one you buy today will be the same if/when a new model comes out. if you are buying the newest model to have a status symbol, then you are hosed. if you need a music player and portable hard drive, then you are in luck! apple.com/ipod should help you out.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@digg0t
they have a 160 GB flash based harddrive. the problem isnt that they cant make it. its the fact that flash drives are extremely expensive. unless u wanna pay a couple thousand on your ipod they have to wait until prices drop. a lot - DesolataX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The next iPod will be here when it gets here,we can't do anything to speed it up, with the exception of buying apple and forcing them to make the next ipod available in the next few weeks, but who has enough money to buy apple? I sure as hell don't.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sales of the iPhone touch screen will drive down their cost for more touch screens making the 6G ipod reasonable to manufacture.
- blurrie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the iphone isn't the new ipod b/c not everyone wants cingular. duh. if it was supposed to be the next ipod.. then they would done an unlocked one or multiple deals or a deactivated phone part of the iphone. but.. alas. no.
- BobTurtle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I did the exact same thing, except I have a sweet setup whereas I can couch-hump and surf online at the same time.
- johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3actually iPod was originally a name for another Apple device that got scrapped, so some long term secret plan based on the name is false. the idea to apply it to the music player was from an outside person.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipod#History_and_design
excerpt:
The name iPod was proposed by Vinnie Chieco, a freelance copywriter, who (with others) was called by Apple to figure out how to introduce the new player to the public. After Chieco saw a prototype, he thought of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey and the phrase "Open the pod bay door, Hal!", which refers to the white EVA Pods of the Discovery One spaceship.
Apple had previously registered the name "iPod" for Internet kiosks, but never put it to use. - fireball74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Doubt it. With only 4 and 8GB a pop, that's hardly enough to put music, TV shows, and movies on. This will be for those that don't want to carry a second media device on the day to day basis. For long trips I think I'd rather have my nice 30 or 80GB iPod to fit everything I want on it.
What I want to know is, when will the 160GB model iPods come out? - DarkJC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just a small correction, since you asked. It's 30GB and 80GB.
- JeffD, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Suprisingly, not evrey one has a cell phone (or wants to pay out the ass evrey month to get one).
- agarc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3First of all, for all the people with a 4G iPod that stopped working, my 4G also failed. It was abandoned for 6 months. Then my brother opened it up, inserted a business card between the case and hard disk and voila - it was fixed! It might be worth a try...
Before the 4G was fixed, I bought a 60gb. I quickly ran out of space (my tastes in music are eclectic, to say the least). Then that was stolen with my luggage. Now I have a red Nano (great for the gym, but not enough space for anything else) and an 80gb. I keep 1 or 2 series of TV shows (to watch while waiting in the airport), the rest is music. It's still not enough space! I would love it if the iPod continued to be as small and light as the 6G 80gb but had maybe 120 or 160gb of space.
I'm glad Apple hasn't come out with a widescreen iPod... I feel like it would move the iPod too far away from its primary purpose, playing music. Look at the craptacular PSP... How much better would it actually be to watch video content on a 4" screen as opposed to a 2"?
I would rather see further improvements in battery life and durability (wouldn't it be great if there was a "military-grade" iPod, like those old Motorola Nextel phones?) - DrGamez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Really you know this for a fact? What are your sources?
- SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2apparently they can stall, they have and they will and you'll still anticipate like crazy and buy 50 of them.
- kermithefrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this is an excellent debate.. but it all comes back to one thing... THE NUMBERS..
- zioxide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Honestly, I don't really want them to come out with a widescreen one with a huge ass screen. I love the design of the current iPod, and I hope they just update it to like 120GB soon.
The only thing I don't like about the current one is how the front is flat. On the 4G it was slightly convex and I liked that design much nicer. But oh well, I'm sure Apple wouldn't go back to and old design. - MSwanberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was with them until Easton's comments...
"Undoubtably"? I guess supposably "undoubtably" is a word now.
the state of the U.S. educational system these days... - imamessy1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I must be doing something right because my original 3G still works like a charm. It's almost four years old. I only had one problem when it didn't play nice with Macbook Pro right after I got it about a year ago, and the hard drive wouldn't spin down. Just had to erase and put my stuff back on (which I thankfully backed up when I got a firewire drive). It took maybe an hour, but it's better than buying a new one. It even flew off the back of a treadmill a few times without a hiccup.
So much for a device you have to replace every two years. - digg0t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i always thought ipod ment information podual :
- bbrosemer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5They are stalling the release of the 6G ipod unitl they can put 20GB into a Nano. Why, because as someone stated somewhere here is that for people who just want to play music they will stick with the click wheel. The nano will always stay click wheel, so in turn the 6G ipod is probably already complete. They are just waiting for the flash memory to double in size "more then likely" which will happen again this summer. So you will see 16gb and 8gb nano and probably 40GB and 100GB widescreen ipods all of which will be shipping before christmas....
