- jackpot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+77You broke my sarcasm detector.
- jotux, on 10/12/2007, -3/+60This just in: USB webcam now works on a mac! AMAZING!
- lampshade, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34I hate articles that begin with "CONFIRMED!!"
- Burritoking924, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Because, its not going to work for a PC.
/sarcasm - alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27Just because you have a Mac doesn't mean you have to buy *all* Apple.
Logitech makes some great webcams. - seoul_scurry, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19"CONFIRMED!!" and then "A guy reporting" (meaning unconfirmed)...
*sigh*
A moment of silence for those who believe everything they see on the internet. - renik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Umm...
Use any PC webcam you want. A LOT of them are supported:
http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/ - theblindman2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Got a MiniDV camera with Firewire? Most of those can be used as webcams, I tell you the 3-CCD goodness from a Panasonic GS70 beats out any little lipstick cam any day. It may seem like overkill, but it keeps your cam from gathering dust between projects.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Of course you can.
- fabiolover2002, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18whoops.. digg me down
- devo6273, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15@squidi
I'm not even going to pick a side with your argument, but you do realize that the divx website itself has "Divx for Mac" right?
And how are p2p networks designed for windows machines? Short of uTorrent, OS X has a decent list of bittorrent clients... It's fine to have your opinion on which operating system you like best, but at least do a little research first. - robinator08, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12SENSATIONALISTASTIC
- RocksOFF, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I'm still waiting for the cam to work on Vista.
- Jimzip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10It's funny the things that people discover, it was one of those moments where the guy sees his camera on his desk, then his iBook. Then tries for the hell of it.
Like the article says, this will be a great alternative (US$39 or CDN$45) for people that don't want to spend 3x the price on an iSight.
Thanks screamer!
Jimzip :D - StephenCIreland, on 10/12/2007, -11/+18"Hi im a mac"
"Hi im a pc, wait, what the, you cant, no, thats my xbox, what"
"robbin ur cam"
"but your a mac"
"I believe you just got owned" - cubedude6491, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12can you use it with a pc as a webcam?
- OneManArmy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Good news. I wonder though when will Apple release the new iSight. It sucks that MacPro and mini owners can't buy new iSights, resolving to used ones on eBay.
- jcostom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yes, but only if you tape it to your head. :)
- nacharya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"just plug it in and, boom"
- Zatko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6lOUDsCREAMEr obviously has hundreds of girlfriends
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@squidi: You could play divx files on a Mac 3 years ago using VLC, plus there was a codec for it as well for Quicktime.
I even found a website detailing how to play divx files on a Mac from 5 years ago here:
http://www.projectomega.org/article.php?lg=en&php=tuts_howtos1l&p=2 - manitoba98xp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The news isn't that you can get a USB cam to work, it's that it works out of the box. Admittedly, most of the reason Apple has been making USB cams difficult to use, is to push people to buy iSights. But now that that's no longer an issue, we, too, get the benefits of inexpensive video cams. (Although the new Macs have an iSight built-in :D)
- gregm, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14But I thought only PC's needed to have cameras duck-taped to their monitors because all Macs have them built in!
Did an Apple ad lie to me!?! It can't be true! - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It works on the PS3 too.
Both Apple and Sony are now supporting standard USB cameras. - Xizer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6CONFIRMED: USB webcam that adheres to industry standards works on a computer that supports industry standards. I'm Ric Romero, and we'll have more on this breakthrough at 11.
- thasmadawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nice, just sold my iSight for $250.
If anyone needs photobooth, let me know. - Disodium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6obviously enough people cared to get it on the front page
- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Wow! It makes it's own gravy too.
- ghosteater, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I refuse to believe this story's claims until I see one taped to Justin Long's head.
- culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5In a related story, Jimmy cracked corn.
- Roflworthy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3But wouldn't that mess up the picture/video quality?
- mustache, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, I didn't realize this was a story. I have been using it for months now on OSX. Great cheaper alternative for webcams. At Best Buy the Xbox cam is the best value for the money, considering most of their webcams are grossly overpriced.
- headband, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5thats because they digg anything with mac in the title
- jr8rulz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4it does if you use it inside windows messenger ONLY!
- liuping, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Skype supported many USB cams, but 10.4.9 is needed to make it "Just Work" in iChat.
Work fine for me. great for old macs with no building cam... - Nysul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3REALLY!!! WOW!!!!
- DPowers08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Notice how you never see, "UNCONFIRMED!!"
- ianskate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's just a webcam. Wow.
- mikae1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From Wikipedia: The camera uses a standard USB 2.0 connection and is also PC and Mac OS X (v. 10.4.9 and up) compatible.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_Live_Vision - nubnub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2of course it works. Its a standard web cam.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In as much as your sentence is English, yes, it works on PS3.
- N1XUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple Store Regent Street (UK) before Xmas told me they no longer can sell iSights or even order them in as a repair for my damaged one. Something to do with mercuary used in manufacturing process. Whilst testing my damaged isight he couldnt understand why a single member of the macbook family on the genius bar wouldn't recognise it. Turns out they only use the inbuilt iSight. He had to sheepishly ask to borrow my ibook g4 to test/diagnose.
With this recent driver update i dont really think apple will release a new external iSight. They will just inlcude it in all studio displays etc. Not to mention some of the newer logitech ones are very impressive for the price. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is huge.
- testdrivemedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh YAY! Exactly what Mac owners need... a Microsoft and Xbox logo on a peripheral! Nice :P
- joshman5k, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9But I thought macs pride themselves on having the camera.....
http://movies.apple.com/movies/us/apple/getamac/apple-getamac-tech-support_480x376.mov - Radan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm probably going to make a fool out of myself by asking this, but if we say that this Vision Cam is just a normal USB webcam, does that mean that I do it other way around and use a standard USB cam with the Xbox? I have always thought that the Vision Cam used some strange custom made drivers to boost its sales.
- slave25637, on 10/12/2007, -12/+13lol, it doesnt even work with vista. (if it does work with vista and i sound like an idiot, someone please let me know because im having trouble)
- jads, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The recent 10.4.9 update did include support for USB based videoconference cameras - this isn't exactly the same as USB webcams as they are USB devices designed for a specific standard - it seems that the vision cam is one such device for it to work out of the box. This isn't true of all USB webcams though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1RE: does the camera work with vista
it gives me an error that says it couldnt find the driver, but when i did the youtube capture-direct-to-web thingy it worked no problem
*shrug* - V3X3D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone care to take the cam apart and inspect the parts for us ? It would be nice to know what kinda chip it uses and the usb vendor id would be usefull too. Once thats sorted getting compatible drivers shouldnt be a problem for XP and Vista?
