- choopie911, on 10/12/2007, -7/+30"• Parental Controls: Apple debuted Parental Controls in Mac OS X Tiger, released on April 29. 2005. That's nearly two years ago.
• Photos: Apple debuted iPhoto on January 7, 2002. That's over five years ago.
• DVD creation: Apple debuted iDVD on January 9, 2001. That's over six years ago.
• Movies: Apple debuted iMovie on October 5, 1999. That's over seven years ago. Oh, HD? Okay, Apple debuted iMovie HD on January 11, 2005. That's over two years ago." - DBiz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22I was at the CES keynote when he talked about their Time Machine clone.
He then proceeded to show iPhoto, Spotlight, and Gadgets.
When he said (About his time machine clone): "It's better than going back in time" I got up and left.
What a ***** joke. - gsnd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12His point is that Microsoft didn't innovate like Gates is claiming.
- teknomunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9But if Apple was not innovative with these things 2-7 years ago, where does that put Microsoft at?
- monergism, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Who cares about glossy and useless UI's? Give me functionality!!!!!!
I wish that the Macs would lose the "Zoom" and go with Maximize.
/mac owner :( - wastern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7>>But if Apple was not innovative with these things 2-7 years ago, where does that put Microsoft at?
not sure where you are going with this, but if Apple did nothing in the past 7 years you wouldn't see a lot of this stuff in Vista....flip 3D, Calendar, photo manager, dvd creator, movie maker, etc, etc, etc
If it wasn't for Apple MS would sit back, do nothing and let people buy 3rd party software or charge extra for Windows add-ons
They said in the past that the reason IE wasn't updated in XP, and the reason IE and WMP will abandoned on the Mac were because they were free. MS doesn't see spending money on development of free software. If Apple didn't give away all sorts of software with OS X then MS wouldn't feel pressure to either - EclipseMullet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You can tell Gates *knows* they have copied OS X. The squirming in his seat says it all.
- nato64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Might? The title of the artcile might as well be "Continue the flame war here"
- Gio8863, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I love the way he keeps calling parental controls a Microsoft innovation. When I look in my accounts system preference pane, I see, there on the right this odd tab called "Parental Control" .. hmmmmmm . Interesting that it's been there for about A YEAR already .. yet Microsoft innovated that .. huh?
Vista will sell, sadly.
Vista will satisfy most, sadly.
Leopard will lead the way forward, thankfully. - nevermind13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Personally, I could care less if Windows copies Mac. So what, it only makes for a better operating system. In the same way, Apple should copy Microsoft if it will make their operating system better.
But Vista disappoints me because outside of the interface, they really havent offered anything really new and shockingly innovative. There is some nice things, like Flip3d, but no WinFS. No "real" sidebar (it was supposed to be about notifications, not semi-useless gadgets. Even OSX widgets are kinda pointless).
If Microsoft wants to copy, thats fine, but I wish they wouldn't axe their true innovations (can you tell how much I wanted WinFS?).
I will be buying Vista to dual boot on my iMac (student rate is fairly cheap), but I do not think I will spend most of my time there, and I really wanted to give it a shot.
If Gates thinks parental controls are going to "WOW" people, I think he's mistaken. - JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5And he just kinda changes the subject there. .
- cannibaljp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7better than going back in time...
better than taking the initiative by develop truly interesting and compelling products is more like it...
i can't say that micro$oft hasn't put out products that changed the world - that would just be shortsighted on my part... but with the amount of resources they could pour into r&d...
i dunno... - StatusQuoRules, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Parental controls are already in Mac OS X 10.4 so he is wrong in saying that is the first time they have been done
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Jesus Christ. Fullscreen vs. Zoom is becoming almost as bad as Mac vs. Windows.
Give it a rest, already. Every time someone says they want to see their apps full screen, some blowhard comes along and berates them for even CONSIDERING another way they'd like to have their OS work. Can't we all just get along? - ginty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I love a good giggle before bedtime.
- fusionFactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not only that...
He states no one has done a Media Center...what is Front Row?
Also mentions ease of making DVDs and HD Movies...um, hasn't iDVD and iMovie been on the Mac fo some time, now? - Theophany, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Do you even know what you're talking about? If MS hadn't stolen from Apple in the first place we'd all still be entering text commands to run applications. Imagine what life would be like without your GUI and mouse; that's what Apple has done.
In terms of Vista's actual software, nearly everything on Vista is just a port to a PC from the Mac OS X. iPhoto, IMovie, Exposé, etc. Saying that Windows is leagues ahead of Mac OS X is like saying technology in 1995 was better than in 2005.
And for reference's sake, I own both a Mac and a PC. I love my PC, but Windows is a piece of crap compared to OS X. - winmac96, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Does Bill still know what's actually going on inside the Redmond campus? Interesting. He sounds very surprised with his stammerings... heh..heh...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Vista had published explots before it hit the markets.
- MBX1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7"mediacenTTTer", hah
- spider-man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And just a few days ago there was a popular digg article bragging about how Linux had copied the look of Vista's desktop.
When Linux does it, it's a wonderful thing. When Microsoft does it, it's evil and stealing other's ideas.
How hypocritical. - matthewwanderer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Windows is leagues ahead of OS X still"
Can you support that.
Seriously. I've never used a PC, so I'm out in the cold on this. I bought my first Mac in 1986 and never left the platform; it does everything I've needed, often more.
The PC v Mac argument has never been more tedious than it is now. - alansky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What a lying sack of sh*t! Bill Gates tells another lie every time he opens his mouth! Microsoft's main "innovation" is that they've figured out how to sell inferior copies of other company's products to uninformed, gullible customers as if they were the real deal. Whoever buys Vista will get exactly what they deserve.
- Theophany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MOAB? We'd need daily bugs for Windows/Vista.
- cannibaljp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe I should have put: BREAKING NEWS!!! in from of the story title...
- invader, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3fyi, there's a difference between "inventing" and "innovating"
eww.. i just defended microsoft.... i.. feel so.. dirty - wastern, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4ummmm.....why would you want to full screen an app on a widescreen monitor. I always cringe when I see full screened windows on widescreens, or even high res monitors. There is SO much wasted space and productivity drops dramatically. The Zoom button is much more functional, if the content you are working with needs the whole screen then it'll use the whole screen.
The old iBook and 12" Powerbook were the last two macs where a full screen app would make sense seeing as they were only 1024x768 - bashfulczar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The funny thing is I clicked this Digg headline from my Windows Vista sidebar.
- cannibaljp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4yeah... count the amount of times he stammers and uses an, "uh"
he wasn't expecting that one. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Windows has always been a kludge.Windows 1.0 was a graphical shell that sat on top of DOS. So was 3.11. Even dear old Windows 95 sat on top of DOS 7.1 and Windows ME sat on DOS 8.0 which was patched to DOS 2000 to make it year 2000 compliant. Windows 2000 was the first version of Windows that couldn't boot into DOS but it did have a command line access- as does XP.
This has been an evolutionary process- and even the most die hard of Microsoft advocates can not claim that it has all been wine & roses. W95 was the first true GUI in that you never had to leave the GUI environment and that software was written specifically for that API.
In contrast, Apple has been GUI oriented since the 1984 launch of the Mac. It only stands to reason that with over 20 years experience working with a total GUI model, Apple's user interface is smoother and more elegant. It is also built on top of a proven workhorse, UNIX, under the hood. Not a completely new and untested OS written from scratch.
If I had to buy a brand new PC tomorrow with either OS/X or Windows Vista, my choice would be OS/X. Vista is what other companies would call a Beta version and will be for a couple of years while the worst of the bugs are banged out. - drd417, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Information week shows Microsoft's innovation:
http://www.informationweek.com/windows/showArticle.jhtml;jsessionid=11GZXD2ZK2YZAQSNDLRSKHSCJUNN2JVN?articleID=197001418 - ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2can we have one day without an anti vista anti apple war on this damn site...? you all sound like little kids....
- melfster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think both companies steal ideas from not only each other but from 3rd parties. I would also say each OS has its strengths and weaknesses. Although OS X is great in some areas in others it sucks. Same goes for vista and windows. You really can't judge vista now you have to wait a year or 2. When OS X first appeared it wasn't all that great. Now 5 versions down the line it has matured. I know all lot people on Digg want their show OS is better then the other. But for vast majority of computing public the apps are key. If apps developed for vista bring something new and useful, Vista will be a success. If not it will fail. It's that simple.
- fasda, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2OK why is it that people keep ranting about how similar Vista is to OS X? MS is doing what any business would do, giving customers what they want. If people like the OS X interface and switch to it then its the obvious thing for MS to do is make a similar interface to retain customers. Look at other industries like cars or shoes you can see similar popular designs coming from many companies.
- fusionFactor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Don't you mean you couldn't care less? Hmm?
- taxali, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Clearly, after decades of debate, it's not about copying features any more. What MS did with Vista is copy Apple's philosphy of desining an operating system. MS copied Apple's apprach to designing an OS.
Apple have always focused on beauty and elegance in their operating systems. Apple's OS X line of OS's have always been user centric, "streamlined" and intuitive. And THAT'S what Microsoft copied! Because anybody knows that the "Luna" theme in Windows XP is disgusting. Probably, even MS knows. But they didn't care about beauty when making XP. Now, they do. And that change of heart is inspired, or borrowed, or stolen, from Apple. - crossers, on 07/18/2008, -0/+0hey not so interesting as I think!

http://xptweak.net - Bobski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Microsoft innovate? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
Microsoft hasn't innovated since the late 80's. Practically all of it's new technology since then has been through assimilation. Resistance used to be futile. - xkrwlng, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'm not a OS X or Vista fanboy myself, but if OS X was released in between XP and Vista, what's the significance?
- DanielNielsen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Linux needs more people to jump on board theire Os and if it helps copying Vista so be it, MS has enough of users on theire ***** OS.
So suck my balls - psyphen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Right on.
- DJCult, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Why the hell is this buried?
- DJCult, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5why don't they just call it ***** iVista and come clean.
"Oh no, we're doing something COMPLETELY different. See these little web applications? We call them 'Gidgets'. We're WAY ahead of our time. 'Gidgets'. - psyphen, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Even if Bill Gates doesn't know what he's talking about, Windows is leagues ahead of OS X still, and it is a new low to accuse window of trying to mimic Macs. They each stole from each other equally, as many before have shown. So just no.
- xriddle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1"If I had to buy a brand new PC tomorrow with either OS/X or Windows Vista, my choice would be OS/X. Vista is what other companies would call a Beta version and will be for a couple of years while the worst of the bugs are banged out."
Can somebody say MOAB
Month of Apple Bugs
http://projects.info-pull.com/moab/
Vista's not the only one banging out bugs.. I'm surprised all the M$ bashers don't mention MOAB. - jebudas, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Good stuff! Although there might be a Mac v PC flame war on the digg horizon...

What is Digg?
