- JessicaWinters, on 11/05/2009, -14/+90Apple phones are crap. I tried one and I couldn't even find the buttons on it.. just one big flat screen. My Windows Mobile phone is 20 times better.
- youshallhave, on 11/05/2009, -17/+90The WORST phone? No. Not by a long shot.
- pangelovski, on 11/05/2009, -7/+44Im not an Apple fanboy, dont even own a Mac but seriously, if it weren't for the iphone, we wouldn't have android, multitouch, a decent browser, appstores, games, etc on our phones today. Kudoz to Apple for pushing the competitors to develop better technology. In the end we, the customers, win.
- ssttuu, on 11/05/2009, -6/+42How low these people will go for page views.
- alexgdorman, on 11/05/2009, -3/+30It's cool to hate popular things.
- covertbadger, on 11/05/2009, -2/+27Oh Jessica, you're absolutely my favourite digg troll :-)
- jaimequin, on 11/05/2009, -4/+28Nope, just retarded
- CaptainNoPants, on 11/05/2009, -1/+22The sombrero isn't helping
- moisie, on 11/05/2009, -1/+21I forgot, every other smartphone's battery lasts for weeks.
There may be phones that have better battery life, but the simple fact is that if you're doing the sort of things a smartphone can do then the battery is going to run down far quicker than a device that is just a phone will. - dvsbastard, on 11/05/2009, -4/+23Que?
/Creo que queria decir "queue"... - cjflashman, on 11/05/2009, -4/+22Oh, ***** me.
Damnit, now I look mexican.
:( - Jaymo89, on 11/05/2009, -5/+22That honour goes to Motorola. They haven't released a decent phone in international markets for an age or two.
- cjflashman, on 11/05/2009, -10/+26Que the mobile device fanboy shootout in three, two, ...
- imronburgundy83, on 11/05/2009, -23/+39"While france hates blackberry, we also hate iphone because americans use it. France is far superior technology and we like samsung for our favorite."
Hahahaha funniest statement of the day. France hasn't even discovered deoderant yet, much less technology. - Deejster, on 11/05/2009, -3/+17Seriously, I can name several things I dislike about my iPhone (no background apps, high radio interference, etc), but the ones listed in the article are lame. Just headline grabbing. Nothing to see here, move on.
- geodebug, on 11/05/2009, -0/+14I can't believe that people didn't get Jess' silent /s
- Dundasbro, on 11/05/2009, -3/+17I can understand how he got confused though, jokes are generally funny.
- locondcoco, on 11/05/2009, -0/+11yes, for a PHONE. as a handheld computer, its brilliant. being an iphone owner since the first generation, i agree with many points, though a bit exaggerated.
- geodebug, on 11/05/2009, -0/+11Manuel? Que?
Mister Fawlty, he not here. - fragmit, on 11/05/2009, -4/+14Lighten up Francois.
- thephosphorbox, on 11/05/2009, -4/+14Yeah with your /s.. there are no other phones mentioned by name in that article so how is the blogger biased against the iPhone? Just because someone points out flaws in a device means they're biased? I have several friends who have iPhones and complain about the same issues.. but they still love their phones.
Get a grip. Just because someone doesn't like something you like doesn't automatically put you in the "wrong" and on the defensive. - insanebrain, on 11/05/2009, -2/+11>is this sarcasm?
You need to ask ? - lolwatermelon, on 11/05/2009, -2/+11It gets ad impressions. It's the reason Dvorak still has his column.
- sputnikv, on 11/05/2009, -1/+8outside the uk i would cite at&t for its horrible service, though all devices running on at&t's network share that same fault, not just the iphone
- hasslinthehoff, on 11/05/2009, -1/+8Compared to what? A phone from the future? The Star Trek Communicator? A 1950s Bell telephone? The other smartphones out there to me are just as prone to problems and flaws... I think the reviewers are just a bunch of PC guys who need a hug.
- Ratatosk, on 11/05/2009, -2/+8google bought android in 2005 which was obviously founded a few years earlier... do you really think they just started doing android when they saw the iphone in 2007?
of course they might have been inspired in a few points by the iphone, but in most points they went their own way... in turn, the new iphone has stuff like compass that the G1 had before.... so everyone gets inspired by everyone:) - seltaeb4, on 11/05/2009, -2/+8He's from Barcelona.
- jerrycan, on 11/05/2009, -3/+9¿qué?
- Leonffs, on 11/20/2009, -8/+13Nothing quite like countering ignorance with ignorance.
If you seriously believe the french don't use deodorant you're just a damn idiot. - youshallhave, on 11/05/2009, -5/+10Yeah, i'm excited to see what's up with the Droid. I like how people are talking about how that's going to be the next iPhone killer when all the "iPhone killers" that have preceded the Droid have failed miserably.
Look folks, you can't beat the Iphone. Not for a while anyways until someone comes along with something that blows it out of the water. - TimtheTaxMan, on 11/05/2009, -5/+10I like the iPhone overall, but I do agree that the shape isn’t good for holding to your ear for anything more than a quick call. If you use the ear buds, it eliminates that problem. I’ve never had any of the other problem they describe, such as the phone not ringing.
- theuniversal, on 11/05/2009, -3/+8Here are the reasons they give:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Say what? Call quality on the iPhone is pathetic, and it's mostly because of the tiny speaker. It has to be aligned with your ear canal with the accuracy of a laser-guided ninja doing cataract surgery, or else the volume cuts down to nothing as the sound waves bounce uselessly around your ear shells.
Dropped calls and data gaps. If, like Will Smith in Enemy of the State, you're trying to avoid the eagle eye of Big Brother, the iPhone could be for you. It drops calls, fails to connect and doesn't even ring sometimes — not for everyone, but more often than any other phone we're currently using.
You can't answer if it doesn't ring. Perhaps the worst of the iPhone's problems is its ability to sit there stealthily and ignore incoming calls. With no ring or vibrate to clue you in, your friends and family are redirected to voicemail… or just treated to silence. If you're in a two-iPhone family, it can be a case of the deaf leading the mute.
The iPhone might burn your face off. According to our ultra-sciencey test, it is extremely unlikely that the iPhone will burn your face off… Nevertheless, pressing a large, flat surface to your cheek is always going to be sweaty… Thus the current trend for people to walk down the street with their phones on hands-free, yelling into the mike at the bottom while they hold the rest of the phone away from their faces.
iPhone battery life. A couple of hours of Google Maps over 3G and you'll be lost in the woods without even the possibility of phoning for help. Compare that to the good old days when your phone would last a week without charging, and you'll wonder why you ever bothered to switch.
The iPhone sucks — so what? If the iPhone is inaudible, unconnected, on fire and out of battery, why is the thing so popular? The fact is, although the iPhone is the worst phone in the world, it's the best handheld computer there is.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I read these and I think they must be talking about a different iPhone than the one I have, which, in addition to its other great functions, works absolutely perfectly as a phone. I also wonder why if it sucks so much it's being blatantly copied and targeted as the phone to beat by every other handset maker. That's very odd. - yaazz, on 11/05/2009, -3/+7O hai, I was just wondering if this article is referring to an Iphone on AT&T? I have an Iphone on Rogers, and although I bend over every month to pay for it, the quality seems fine, and don't see any of these data gaps or dropped calls.
- Trifold, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4Oh please, I personally can't stand Steve Jobs and Apple's whole iBlank line of products, and even I know this is completely stupid. The iPhone's a great product, the reason's I got an Android phone instead were: I hate AT&T (not a UK issue, but still), Apple's legendary restrictedness, and the $80/month to the $50 I pay with T-Mobile. The hardware itself's actually pretty awesome. The worst smartphone? Have you guys ever tried that Godawful Touch-Blackberry thing?
- MacParrot, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4Isn't most of that related to the network the device uses as compared to the device itself? Near DC I've never had dropped or missed call issues and on a long road trip to Chicago through Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana I had no problems either. It worked great as a GPS as well (Navigon app)
- chazuk, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4Don't mention the war!
- bmdubya, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4Actually, if Nokia phones never came around, then we wouldn't have games, because I played the ***** out of Snake on my old Nokia phone.
- geodebug, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3Funny, the talking person-to-person is my least used function on the iPhone.
It's a snarky article but I'd have to agree that the iPhone as a phone (reception/quality) is kinda average. As a hand-held computer it is pretty kick ass and I use it for work/play often throughout the average day. - macslut, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3The full line actually reads:
"The fact is, although the iPhone is the worst phone in the world, it's the best handheld computer there is."
My phone experience doesn't mesh with the author's experience, but I do live in an area with really good reception. The only known dead zone I get on a regular basis is when I drive to pick up the kids at school and pass by Steve Job's house (weird place to be getting dropped calls on an iPhone).
My handheld computer experience does mesh with the author's experience, it really is the best IMHO. - jaimequin, on 11/05/2009, -3/+6I guess in the UK they have ***** reception. I don't think this guy even knows how to use the phone correctly. What was that about the speaker and proximity to ear speaker making it hard to talk into? Maybe if your head is shaped like Stewie Griffin.
- ToddSchishler, on 11/05/2009, -3/+6My iPhone hasn't had any of these problems. I've had one or two dropped calls since I got my 3GS (June 2009, Canadian launch.) And I have no concerns over call quality either. And the only time I get phantom voice-mails (new voice-mail, but no missed call,) is when people call while I'm on the subway.
I'll admit the battery life sucks, and it can get pretty warm, but only when I treat the thing more like a computer than a phone. Which I find perfectly acceptable.
But worst phone ever? I had two KRZR screens crap out on me in less than a year each. - EGOvoruhk, on 11/05/2009, -1/+4@ youshallhaveyoushallhave
Nothing can blow the iPhone out of the water, and here's why: The iPhone is great and all, but it's nothing new. Apple took what Microsoft, RIM, and Sybiam had been doing for years, and marketed it to the entire world instead of just the business sector. Good for them, but that has nothing to do with the actual technology of the phone. That's why nothing can "blow it out of the water". The only thing that can happen, is a phone will come out that slightly improves on the technology that came before it. Just like what Apple did - piieerrrree, on 11/05/2009, -6/+9I dated a French guy for a while, and he was the best-smelling person ever. >:
- pangelovski, on 11/05/2009, -3/+6True, but iphone was the first one to integrate all these features into one device.
Im not saying that everything is perfect, but they have come a long way.
However, I do miss snake on the nokia. - MacParrot, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3My first iPhone was the 3GS. I'm not sure what the battery life was like on earlier models (or in comparison to similar phones) but I can't go more than a day on a single charge. Of course I'm also watching video, surfing the web, using multiple apps, and so on. I do wish that when people talked about the poor battery life they could link to an unbiased comparison instead of just repeating the same crap over and over again.
I solved my issue with a Mophie Juice Pack Air which gets me through at least 2 days of pretty heavy use. Makes it quite a bit bigger though - vocalyouth, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3my iPhone drops a ton of calls. completely inexplicably, too. they'll randomly hang up, i'll look at my phone and i have full bars. I also get the thing where the phone won't ring - like almost everyday. i don't understand it, but my experiences with it are that it's great for other things but pretty lousy at being a phone.
- moebis, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3I thought I was the only one having the problem with the iphone not ringing. Even when I had a good signal it still would not ring, and sometimes I would hear the tone that a voicemail was left. I assumed it was just an AT&T problem.
- mwalker05, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3the reason they wrote this article was to point out that while apple got all the bells and whistles right, the product was designed to be a phone, which is the one part where apple dropped the ball. (well aside from the app store restrictions)
- icodebot, on 11/05/2009, -1/+4Last line in case you missed it: "It's the best handheld computer their is."
- jud420, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3In the past year I've used a blackberry and an iPhone.. i've never had call quality issues with either one.
