- BinaryDelt, on 01/18/2008, -31/+104I'd rather listen to Tom Cruise babble about Scientology than hear Steve Jobs talk about how great he and Apple are.
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -5/+62If you people don't buy Apple products because you think Steve Jobs is an ***** there's something seriously wrong with you. I think Steve Ballmer is an ***** and I still buy Microsoft products.
- deadbaby, on 01/18/2008, -4/+51Saying someone was drunk is a lot different than saying they're an alcoholic. Nevertheless, Jobs is a a rude guy who doesn't care much about hurting people's feelings. It's well documented. He's never tried to portray himself as a happy cuddly buddy figure ala Woz so I don't mind. He is, at very least, authentic.
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -11/+43who the hell is Robbie Bach? Seriously...is this someone that people should know? Or is this one of those virgin nerd things?
- David513, on 01/18/2008, -5/+29The sensationalized headline on this thing is just plain wrong. Anybody who can read plain English can understand what Jobs meant in this context. It was hyperbole that clearly said, "Anybody who would believe something that silly must be drunk." That is WAY different from calling someone "a drunk." It is just plain stupid to post a moronic summary that flat out lies about the original source material.
- theinept, on 01/18/2008, -15/+35I, lowliest of men, know not one but three people who own Zunes! Granted, I'm one of them and they're all woot! refurbs...
- luchid, on 01/18/2008, -6/+25DRM free? You do know that the only DRM you are getting with an iPod is the one in iTMS purchased-songs? Don't you? And even those are being phased out and replaced with drm-free versions.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 01/18/2008, -3/+21I would say the iPod touch is the best available. I am not trying to sound like a fanboy but wireless internet (full internet) is hard to beat. Now then again if you aren't looking to spend that money it is ridiculous to have that "I have to have an iPod" mentality.
- RedS0x, on 01/18/2008, -3/+19First of all, that article clearly says $1.29. Secondly, they've since lowered all songs to 99 cents. Thirdly, we have reply buttons.
;-) - fkr3, on 01/18/2008, -2/+17The actual article that MacDailyNews summarised, and then Engadget re-summarised:
http://www.cnbc.com/id/22673034 - Midnightbrewer, on 01/18/2008, -4/+18Who's everyone? The majority of the MP3 player-buying market seems to be putting their money on the iPod. Marketing has nothing to do with it; the iPod's interface is just a pleasure to use.
I also like iRiver, but their lackluster attempt to write a sync manager for OSX coupled with the awkward controls on the smaller player I had were really aggravating. They do have nicer, more recent models, but they still fall flat on price versus storage capacity, for example. I still use that mini player because it's excellent for recording audio on the go, but that's its sole purpose in life. - dagamer34, on 01/18/2008, -1/+15Chief Software Architect at Microsoft. Took over part of Bill's old *primary* job in 2006. Bill still acts as chairman and on the board of directors until July 1, 2008 (I think). Are you sure you're nerd enough for digg?
- tas08, on 01/18/2008, -0/+13Agreed. I spend my money on the product that I feel offers the most value, I don't give a crap about whoever the president/CEO/whatever of the company is.
- michaelb1, on 01/18/2008, -7/+19Seriously, this is very funny. Everyone has this 'please don't make fun of him" attitude. Where the ***** were you when MS was squeezing stores to make them limit shelf space to competitors? Where the ***** were you when MS told PC makers that they would have to pay more for Windows if they sold any PC's with a different OS (Linux)?
So now Steve J. gives them a little reach-around while he screws them out of the audio player market and you all cry like babies. Jesus Christ. - cloudcity, on 01/18/2008, -3/+13Yes, they need to come out with some kind of new operating system with the stability and security of Unix with a really slick user interface. Then maybe they build some kind of iCell or "iPhone" device and get into that market!
- luftrofl, on 01/18/2008, -10/+19I should refrain from telling Mr. Jobs about how awesome my new Zune is and how much I hate iTunes ;)
- tcardone05, on 01/18/2008, -44/+53Everyone knows that the iPod isn't the best available, but they know how to market.
Zen, Zune, Sansa, iAudio, etc... - inactive, on 01/18/2008, -0/+9LOL. Zune 2? Is it true they removed smart playlists and ratings? I can't image how frustrating it must be for people who have invested time in organizing their music collections in WMP9/10/11 and Zune1/2 only to have the rug pulled from under them after each major release.
Here's some advice: Never ask a techie about MP3 players; they'll always give you a stupid answer. Ask someone who knows something about music. - adude, on 01/18/2008, -4/+13That wasn't an appropriate response, but buried as inaccurate. Jobs didn't call him A drunk, just questioned whether he WAS drunk. Totally different.
- Soave, on 01/18/2008, -14/+23Steve Jobs is a dick.
- chriskeyes, on 01/18/2008, -12/+21I thought that was rather rude. Instead of making fun of your competitors like that, why don't you go somewhere else?
I've got a ton of iPod jokes as well, but I don't have the need to shout them out like an arrogant person. More like a jerk thing, than anything. - derrickgossman, on 01/18/2008, -1/+10Lay off the crack, man.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 01/18/2008, -4/+12Does anyone remember when Bill Gates said the iPod would never sell? I thought that was pretty annoying. Your right though.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 01/18/2008, -2/+10I think that was a joke.
- GuacamoleSan, on 01/18/2008, -1/+9Agreed the headline is way off the mark
- bbear, on 01/18/2008, -1/+9So does anyone know anyone who owns a Zune? I've never even seen a real Zune. Only pictures of what it's supposed to look like on the internet.
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -4/+12No I am not. Thank god.
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -2/+10Yeah...we get it. You don't understand the Digg algorithm. There is no need to keep reminding us.
- roflburger, on 01/18/2008, -8/+15steve jobs is starting to sound a lot like the arrogant CEOs of any given company about to get surprise bitch slapped by their more innovative competition. For the time being Apple is cutting edge, but they cant rely on Ipods and trendy industrial design forever.
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -7/+14Oh no he didn't? What is this, 1995 and Ricki Lake?
- Mast3rDigg3r, on 01/18/2008, -9/+15congrats on your 10 friends
- smek2, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6Well, he's spot on. If one listen to the statements of Gates, Ballmer & Co. you sometimes really do get the feeling that these guys are either intoxicated, or simply delusional.
- MothBoy, on 01/18/2008, -1/+7Buried for the ridiculous headline. Jobs in no way called him a drunk. The fact Jobs reacted the way he did is a strong indication that he cares. That means the second gen Zune is probably pretty good (as early reviews indicate).
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -3/+9Yes, that's exactly what the majority of music lovers are clamoring for. Ogg, and Flac. Why just the other day I heard my mother say, "MP3s are okay, but Flac's the bomb."
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -2/+8Exactly, where were all these bleeding hearts when Microsoft was killing Netscape and re-engineering Windows so that competing office software like Lotus 1-2-3 and Word Perfect would run slower than MS Office? Steve Jobs makes an offhand remark and Apple is evil. While Microsoft has actually been convicted in court for being evil, but that's okay because Bill Gates SEEMS like such a nice guy and he's giving some of his stolen money to charity. Oh please.
- msbeckman, on 01/18/2008, -2/+8Not sure why everyone is getting so bent out of shape over Steve talking ***** about a Microsoft product, because it also happens Microsoft pulls the same ***** with Apple.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=XdXZLIDg5AU - pdxmark, on 01/18/2008, -3/+9Buried as inaccurate - he didn't call him "a drunk" he asked if he "was inebriated". Fanbois suck and flamewars suck.
I'm sure the Zune is a fine product, but I don't know anyone who owns a Zune and I've never even seen one in the wild. I doubt they will be overtaking the iPod any time soon. - Matt2k, on 01/18/2008, -8/+13As long as MP3s go in and ***** AUDIO COMES OUT, that's all I need. I don't give two ***** about looking at pictures of babies or watching episodes of Lost on the train while "shuffling" my pods
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -3/+8And I guess Steve Ballmer is a choir boy (or is it Monkey Boy?).
- michaelb1, on 01/18/2008, -2/+7Its funny that you make purchase decisions based on what a CEO says about someone you don't even know.
- superkendall, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5I used v1.0 and found the control switchup for video when you needed to rotate the device, anything but intuitive. The rest of it was OK but didn't have as much refinement as the iPod UI in terms of little touches. And of course, there's nothing like an iPod Touch or Phone in the Zune family.
- reddcell, on 01/18/2008, -3/+8I'm not much of an ifanboy, but I give credit where credit is due. Ballsy comment, but absolutely true. The only person I know who owns a Zune won it from some employee contest at his work.
It collects dust while he rubs his grubby little fingers all over his precious ipod touch. - ElPachuco, on 01/18/2008, -8/+13iTunes plus is 99 cents too...
And really, who cares about the watermark? They're easily removed anyway... - Bartboy919, on 01/18/2008, -3/+8I really don't think im getting a better product when I have to buy 3 iPod Nano's because the two previous ones have the screen tilted. Nice quality control.
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4Like I said, never ask a techie about MP3 players.
Anyway, here's a primer to get you started. Basic music organization:

And here's an advanced technique for the geeks out there:

(That last one is over 3 (!) years old) - jcostom, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4Interesting.. Maybe it's geographically related? I live in NJ, work in NYC. I don't know a single person who owns a Zune. I've only ever seen *1* Zune outside a store. I had a brief chat on the subway with the guy who had it. He hated it. Like scorned woman kind of hatred. Some 17-year old kid in Best Buy suckered him into buying it, telling him how it was better than an iPod because the screen was bigger, the FM tuner and the wifi. His summary, in a nutshell - the FM radio was useless to him, as he was buying an mp3 player to listen to what *he* wanted to, not what the dj wanted him to. Further, the wifi was useless, as he needed to be near someone else with a zune, willing to send him music.
He further mentioned his hope that his wife would be getting him an iphone for Christmas, so he could eBay the Zune. Personally, I disagree with the choice of iPhone 1.0, but to each his own, eh?
For the record, I'm totally happy with my 8gb black nano (the short, widebody model). - tdous, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4I don't know about ballsy. Ballsy would be "I hear the new one is actually pretty well received. It'd be good to have some competition in the market.", not "NER, NER! We win! La la laaa!"
- techweenie, on 01/18/2008, -2/+6Hmm remember when Michael Dell said that if he ran Apple, he'd just 'shut it down and close the doors?' Of course you don't. Because nobody gives a ***** about anything Michael Dell does.
- Hoov, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4My friend owns one. It's really nice, big screen. I didn't get to mess with it for too long but I'd buy one. The iPod touch kind of has my attention at the moment though. I wasn't a fan of the older iPods.
edit: Also hate iTunes. - AGiantBear, on 01/18/2008, -3/+7I agree...the Touch isn't so much an iPod as an iPod/PDA combo, and is really very nice. However the iPod Classics are outmatched by quite a few other players (iRiver, Cowon, etc)...hell, the 2nd generation Zunes would beat them if not for the lack of a disk mode.
