- dburka, on 10/11/2007, -5/+23Ah, a YAIPR (yet another iPhone review). It's an especially good one from a really smart dude though.
- Mudcrutch, on 10/11/2007, -7/+243 weeks to say the same things everyone said day 1.
- CaughtThinking, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Flawless browser without Flash and Java? Haha. what a load of crock.
- KirinDave, on 10/11/2007, -6/+14I have had several different smartphones now (a benefit of moving from startup to startup). I agree with the assertion that the iphone keyboard lets you type faster and more accurately. It does require a different technique than the blackberry or treo keyboards, but it's faster. The reason is because it's a 0-force connection. You just brush the tip of your thumb/forefinger with light contact and the key registers.
People who complain about the iphone keyboard and say it's a deal-breaker baffle me. It's mostly superior unless you're sight-impaired. - somegeologist, on 10/11/2007, -8/+16"If any app on the iPhone could be considered "killer," in the sense that its very existence justifies the device's purchase, it's the Maps app."
So if this guy used a phone that had gps with Windows Live for mobile would his head explode. - jeffster1, on 10/11/2007, -8/+15Is this guy seriously praising a mapping application? What is this, 1995? Also, saying that he's happy with the "soft" keyboard because he can type faster than "T9" is ridiculous. Compare apples to apples, ever used a blackberry or any other device with a full keyboard?
- mrsteve007, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12It was a well thought out review, but he seems to think other phones can't do a touchscreen 'google maps' browsing. I'd hardly call that a killer app, especially when ATT's 8525 has been doing that for nearly a year now.
Here's a video I made detailing some major features the iPhone can't do.

- biocandy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Next week: 4 weeks with iPhone
- mentor972, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6He was saying that he couldn't do that because he can't use the email program for some stupid reason.
I upload photos from my iPhone using Flickr's provided email address all the time... and it's very fast too!
Proof: My account - http://www.flickr.com/photos/mentor972/ - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10Oh stop it. I for one applaude this guy. Finally someone admits that this phone is not a "smart" phone and is designed to compete with the free with service handets. And i that regards, the next version will beat the current crop of free with service handsets, hands down.
- vanillablue, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6i think my vision is permanently impaired from reading all that reversed out text. white text on a black background with that much text is just too hard on the eyes.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4OH please. This is a phone designed for people with a taste for $500 purses and $2000 dollar watches. This IS NOT an everymans phone.
- prockcore, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6That, and, I hate to say it, but Live Search kicks google maps' ass when it comes to handhelds.
- upsilonh24, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4And still less than 4 hours to make front page...
- bitwiseplatypus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The only way to upload photos to Flickr from the iPhone is via email, and the iPhone automatically scales emailed photos down to 640x480, so there's no way to upload full-res photos unless you dock it, transfer them to a computer, and then upload them manually.
- skellener, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5The headphone blunder is absolutely inexcusable. What the ***** were they thinking? Even the regular iPods work with any headphones. The second major issue is the battery. We all know that portable computers suck down batteries. Since the iPhone is basically a tiny computer, and battery life gets sucked down when using it as such (web surfing, email, etc), they really should have made the battery removable. Again, what the ***** were they thinking? I mean where's the downside of that? They would would have seen tons of extra batteries purchased (which means more $$$) so you can keep an extra on you while out and about. These are both limitations of hardware that Apple needs to re-examine. Everything else is pretty much software. That can be fixed in a simple update. These other issues need to be addressed for version 2.
- jeffster1, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Apparently. Essentially the only valid points I got out of this review were that visual voicemail was cool, and that the screen was big. All the other points are praising features that virtually every smartphone has had for years, at a much lower price.
- DonCarcharo, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8I realize that some people are bored to tears by iPhone stories. However like it or not, it's a popular product and there's still a bunch of us out there sitting on the fence. I'm one of these consumers and I actually read most of these reviews. Sure the pointless stories such as the one that ran the other day on the AP about the iPhone not being worth it because it had little resale value on eBay are just filler, but actual reviews are nice. It's good to get someone else's impression especially if you haven't yet seen the device for yourself.
- streak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4In my experience, the Google traffic data is more comprehensive, covering all fwys in my area, not just the few that Live does.
My previous two phones were an 8525 and Treo 750. I got the 750 because I loved the one-handed operation of my older Treo 650. The 8525 is definitely not a one-handed phone. My other complaints about the 8525 include that the keyboard is actually too big and the keys are indistinct and mushy; turning on/off the ringer is a ridiculously involved process; the 8525 is thick-as-a-brick in my pocket; the sides of the phone are littered with buttons that get pressed accidentally too often; pocket IE sux--terrible html rendering and negotiation; pocket Outlook sux--terrible html rendering; no IMAP/IDLE support -- push e-mail is always extra-cost; slower processor and slower graphics than the iPhone's; 8525 doesn't roam between cellular and Wi-Fi networks as seamlessly. The iPhone unlimited data plan is half the price (before taxes and fees) of the 8525's. Over 2 years, this makes my 8 GB iPhone nearly free. - NerdyNinja, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6@jabber
And you should try to stop being an anti-"mactard" - your vehemence on this and baseless assumptions expose you and take away from your credibility. I personally have never played with a smartphone of any sort, except for 30 seconds on the display iPhone in the mac store - not nearly enough for me to make a claim as to the effectiveness of the keyboard in relation to others. However, KirinDave had a well thought out argument (especially when compared to yours) as he actually states a reason for the iPhone's speed of typing, and it's one that I'll buy.
However, if you care to back up your claim that tactile keyboards are faster and easier (the other points you made are innaccurate, seeing as "auto-complate" is a software thing, and fewer mistakes would depend on the user) with some reasoning behind it, go for it by all means.
Love,
NerdyNinja - neozeed, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6I have a sprint PCS PPC6700, and you know it has the 'full keyboard'.. And what is funny is that I can type faster than it can keep up. So it drops a *LOT* of what I type.. now that is annoying. On the iPhone however, it can keep up. After a week you start to trust it, and yeah I can out type the windows ce disaster, with ease.
Not to mention safari is a zillion times better than the embeded IE 4.0 thing on CE 5.x - Endemoniada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Stop making words up! Both of you!
You BOTH sound like retards! - abhiroop, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3if it isn't a smart phone then why pay smart phone prices? and if it is supposed to compete with "free with service handsets" then why is it so expensive?
- DaedalusX, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3+eleven billion
- streak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I believe the recessed headphone jack is a necessary consequence of maintaining a consistent shape all around the curved edges of the iPhone. Look closely. On the back side of the jack, the jack is almost perfectly flush with the case exterior--not a problem there--but on the front side of the jack, it's recessed due to curvature of the case. That's where the jack is recessed and causes the problem.
As you mention, some headphone plugs (like Bose Quiet Comforts) can be trimmed to work with the iPhone. - tnoy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Nice video, I've been thinking of getting the 8525, and I think that just help make up my mind.
- prockcore, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"pocket IE sux"
Yes it does, that's why I use Opera Mobile.. see, choice is good.
My phone has the full internet, including Flash 7 and Java. - imdandman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3"My other complaints about the 8525 include that the keyboard is actually too big and the keys are indistinct and mushy; turning on/off the ringer is a ridiculously involved process; the 8525 is thick-as-a-brick in my pocket; the sides of the phone are littered with buttons that get pressed accidentally too often;"
You'd think a bigger keyboard would be better for your fingers?
Turning off the ringer is about 2 stylus/ finger taps; i can do it in under a second.
Maybe you wouldn't "accidentally press" the buttons on the side of the phone if you hit the lock button before you put it away.
Pretty much all your complaints are invalid or illogically based. Maybe you should read a manual or google it if you can't figure it out. It really is quite simple - kiensoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Too bad that your iPhone has a 2 megapixel camera yet you can only send VGA pictures to Flickr.
- skinfitz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3FTFA: "For example, without MMS, in the absence of web browser file uploads (disabled in mobile Safari)"
Do the limitations never cease..? No uploading videos to YouTube then - oh that's right - it can't do video either. - neozeed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2oh a 0.2 release product. Sounds great. How long until this thing is abandonded? Plus it looks like yet another pan/scan interface.
You know there is a lot to be said for not needing a stylus to use a handheld device. That and mine constantly needs recalibrating to the point where it's now daily. - philba, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7Man, I have to agree with all the comments. Mostly nothing new and what is new is flat out, well, off base. What struck me was "now that I'm no longer at Apple I don't have to pull punches" followed by yet-another-glowing-iPhone-review. I was hoping for something actually insightful. yawn. buried for being B-O-R-I-N-G
- msbabc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Style
Substance
You might notice one of those has been placed over the other. - streak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Just because a phone is 3G doesn't mean it's faster than an iPhone. Content coming over the Internet is subject to Internet latency, regardless of whether one is using 3G or EDGE. Then the iPhone has about the fastest processor available in a phone, which makes up for some of the 3G advantage. (Battery life also benefits from not using 3G yet). Google Maps is quite responsive on the iPhone, even over EDGE. Check this out for yourself by asking Apple or AT&T sales staff to turn off Wi-Fi while demoing the iPhone.
I don't care if your phone has gigabit ethernet, if it can't render pages accurately, it's useless and a waste of time.
The iPhone runs very stably. Far more stably than any previous PDA or smartphone I've had. (Several iPaqs and Palms, Treo 650, Treo 700, Treo 750, HTC 8525).
Starting from a nearly dead battery, the iPhone charges to 50% in about an hour. It takes about 4 hours to charge completely. A 50% charge yields as much talk, Internet and multimedia usage as a full charge on other smartphones.
By the way, the iPhone doesn't BSOD. BSOD is Windows terminology. Using BSOD to describe the iPhone reveals your ignorance. - gernblansted, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3When I used to work for NeXT (the now defunct company run by Steve Jobs and who's OS became MacOS X), I called a spade a spade one day. I told another employee that I thought that the NeXT hardware was too expensive and that NeXT might not do so well in the long run, even though Steve Jobs told us that they would successfully "ride the price curve". I guess I was wrong...
I was almost fired for that comment. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Digg this guy up! The blog spam author could have at least made his article shorter. There was no reason to prattle on as long as he did, it would have been simpler for him to say blog style... Look at me!! Look at me!! then link to the Pogue review which said basically the exact same thing.
- abhiroop, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I think the main problem most people have (myself included) is that by now we have already heard what the pros and cons are from about 30 different sources. It is getting a little old.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2SEEQPOD was there before iphone and that is not streaming, it downloads the entire song, but starts playing it as its downloaded.
(h264 + aac) iphone doesn’t work via DSS or direct html link Safari doesn’t understand RTSP - infobhan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Can you turn off the ringer without looking at the device? The nice thing about the Treo and the iPhone is that you can disable the ringer without even taking the phone out of your pocket.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6WTF? I upload pictures to Flickr from my iPhone almost every day. So yes, it's entirely possible and pretty easy.
- skinfitz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Extra $$$ for batteries? That's nothing next to extra $$$ for battery replacements and new iPhones.
- tyrione, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1When I called a spade a spade at NeXT I was rewarded. I guess that 's the difference between the hardware and software days of NeXT.
- streak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Take a deep breath. Maybe take a few.
Apple has unofficially stated that the current iPhone software has a bug that fails to indicate when a full charge has been reached, and that in spite of what the display may indicate, the phone does indeed go from dead to full charge in about 4 hours. Apple said this bug in the charge indicator will be fixed in an update.
I don't know about syncing photos from the iPhone to a Mac or Windows box, but iPhone photos do import into iPhoto, and iTunes does sync photos from iPhoto to the iPhone. The desired iPhoto albums are selectable in iTunes. - deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33 weeks into owning an iPhone I absolutely love it. If I somehow lost it tomorrow I'd be taking a trip to the Apple Store to buy another one.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5That video did the 8525 no favors, for anyone that has used an iPhone. You think those horrible rendered web pages or jerky scrolling are appealing? And just what about Google Maps was better on the 8525? From the video it seemed to me, that I get slightly better response time from Google Maps on EDGE (never mind WiFi).
P.S. The iPhone does push, from Yahoo mail. Because real people are more interested in personal email than forging stronger links in teh chain that ties you to your company.
P.P.S. Yes I have used an 8525 in person. And I've also seen several people switch off the 8525, to the iPhone... - gandhii, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1minimo.
how many browser options you got on the iphone? - Endemoniada, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I've had a bunch of phones for several years, and not a single one has ever had a physical button to do just that. The closest I've gotten is my current phone (SE K608i) which goes silent when I press and hold # for a second or two. This does mean I have to first unlock the keyboard, then set it to silent ring, and turn the lock back on. All in all, five key presses.
- Endemoniada, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2my Sony Ericsson K608i (european model number, no idea what it's called overseas) actually does this too. I type my SMSs with T9, and I actually have to restrain myself from typing too fast, or it misses characters. Enormously annoying, the one thing Nokia does ten times better than SE.
- ChewMyFootOff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What a waste of $600 on the iphone then, huh?
