- alantocheri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice list
- polvo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you really want a system to run OSX isn't it cheaper, easier and definitely foolproof to buy an older G3 mac?
- kday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also, installation can be as easy as booting a slightly modified "special" Dev Kit DVD available. There is a Bit Torrent download for this DVD.
- archer75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have heard that drivers for ATI and Nvidia are bundled with the OS but haven't heard of anyone with one of these cards confirm that.
Also, anyone know if it's working with wireless cards? - timeshifter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Site is not responding for me either at this moment. Let's just hope it's down for technical reasons, not "wrath-of-Steve" reasons.
I've been on that site all weekend as I installed OS X on my Dell 8400. - kday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AMD's can work, but the Intel Integrated 900 graphics runs Quartz Extreme (accelerated GUI graphics). Video card support is poor.
- xtac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm Interesting, I believe my dell 8400 has all the specifications, but I'll wait till someone gets it 100% perfectly working so I can just boot it in vmware or something. It's all going to be useless anyhow, apple will be sufficent in patching up most things, and it will be a mouse and cat game all the time, won't even enjoy osx
- isny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where's the Live CD / DVD already?
- binlet2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kday - Where could one find this slightly modified "special" Dev Kit DVD on BT? any tips, have checked TPB no luck!
- archer75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does it support Nvidia cards? Anyone have it working on an Asus P4C800-E motherboard?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That nice, but... what I really need is a listing of supported laptop hardware. SSE3 support on laptops is sparse. The ideal laptop will have SSE3 support, supported accelerated graphics, sound and reasonable power management capability. NIC/USB support mandatory, but firewire support a nice-to-have.
Any ideas?
Looks like it's going to be an OS X Christmas... regardless of how Apple wants it. - animefx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, I plan on buying an SSE3 supported laptop. You can customize you own Compaq with a Turion 64 processor in it. Also, there are no interests, no payments for 12 months on them. The only downside I see is that the graphics uses shared memory, so get atleast a gigs worth of ram.
- aarona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isn't this frenzy we're seeing regarding OSX x86 just proof of how successful the product could be were it released as a standalone product for beige boxes?
- topherfitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I for one love to see people posting about the OS x86! It is tech content, it is showing how the OS is growing and it IS NEW INFORMATION. Come on guys! Keep up the good work! I want a CD that i can install like XP Pro!
- pinsomniac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Video: Intel 900"
Uh, wow. So none of the ATi/NVIDIA cards they tried have worked thusfar? I think an addendum with what hardware *hasn't* been tested would make this useful for people that are serious in trying this out. Otherwise, nice list. - Numbski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FYI...this site's ISP has changed all A records and CNAME records for concretesurf.co.nz to resolve to 127.0.0.1.
Translation: you're not going to get there. Question is, was it due to bandwidth and getting 'dugg', or because someone in legal wigged out? - webXL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jobs had to have known this was going to happen. He allowed iPod/iTunes to run on practically everybody's computer, why not his operating system? They got most of the source for free anyway, so why not sell it for $180/copy to anyone who wants it? They can still make money on hardware if they make something as small and powerful as the mini.
- kday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"If you really want a system to run OSX isn't it cheaper, easier and definitely foolproof to buy an older G3 mac?"
Nope, not at all. In fact, it can be as expensive, and can takes nearly the same amount of difficulty to get it running. Unless you have a B/W G3, there can be difficulty to get it running. You have to use a program called XPostFacto to trick OS X to install on many G3 systems. If you order a B/W G3 on ebay, you will probably be at about $100 once you add up shipping. If you already have a P4 processor, you can spend roughly $60 for a motherboard compatible with OS X. If you don't have a P4 or Celeron D processor, you can pick up a cheap Celeron D for roughly $70. Not to mention, your system will be MUCH faster compared to a G3, while being able to do everything the G3 can do. As long as you have the right components, installing OS X x86 can be as simple as popping a DVD in the drive. As little as $60 to get OS X running on your PC; Not bad, eh? - kday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks like they just had a server change of some sort. Back online :)
- greyskull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This list has been updated with the forum stuff.
http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/HCLPart - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice, but I'm waiting until this matures enough where people have a coherent grasp of beginning to end setup. Too much scattered information and too much temptation to think it's yet another GNAA hoax.
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0too early, too early. whilst you can run it natively, not ALL of the features are running yet. I'll invest when everything seems to work smoothly.
- soapko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Does it support Nvidia cards? Anyone have it working on an Asus P4C800-E motherboard?"
I've seen it working on a P4P800 with a GeForce Fx 5200 - powerbook86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Take it from me, an old mac geek, Power Macintosh G3s are slow, they run Mac OS X but anything higher than 10.3 'Panther' will run badly. Sure if you have like a 1gb of RAM it'll run 'ok' but your best bet is a older G4. But even the early G4s sometimes struggle on Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger". Your best bet is to get a PowerMac G4 that's at least 700mhz with a Quartz Extreme compatible graphics card, otherwise buy some PC parts and wait until a proper easy-install cd and save yourself a lot of time.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why does it matter if you have a good video card? You're gonna' use Mac OSX. :(

"Another day, another Mac OS X x86 post...."
So true - ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've got the OSX Dev. :) Im gonna try playing around with this....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I believe this will work on a Dell 4700 which is available for free from Gratis;
http://www.FreeDesktopPC.com/?r=8250398 - prax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's the big freakin' deal? It's a developer release of non-retail software. When it comes out next year then hack your way into it. Piss off Jobs & Co. Damage Apple profits... and help Windows continue to rule the world. Woo.
- deadpixel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm waiting for someone to call these things "OSX86"
- vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the website is not responding for me...
- dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Get the story here:
http://www.uneasysilence.com/archive/2005/08/3937/ - gaius_baltar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't kid yerselves, Jobs wants this to happen. If he didn't we would have heard from the Apple legal team.
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Another day, another Mac OS X x86 post....
- gregcotten, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Will this ever stop???? Seriously though... just wait for it to be realeased for x86. This stuff comes up too much on digg.
- TGMD, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Everyday I see at least one of these stories, we get it you can Have the mac OS to work on PC way to go.... But keep it off digg for at least a day please?
Oh yeah I do hope that the mac os become popular so then it can get spyware and virus's that would certainly shutup those damn mac evangelists.... Linux is better..... - akaidiot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0I guess this would also work on laptops running the Intel 915 Chipset? Also what about ATI graphics cards? Or are just the craptacular integrated graphics supported?
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Why would I want to dirty my system with OS X? It's already on the verge of screwed up because I have Debien on it.

What is Digg?
