- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Don't be a humbug, this is cool.
- neurokaotix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Bugs Bunny is public domain?
- orbitalleader, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8There's a legitimate site offering these for free via iTunes -- look under the Vintage Tooncast name. Don't need to encode your own at all.
The characters are not public domain, but the works are indeed in the public domain. - Ermenwyr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5In the US, back before the Copyright Act of 1976, copyrights had to be renewed periodically or the copyrighted works would go into the public domain. That's why a number of cartoons produced in the 1930s and 40s are now in the public domain; the copyright holders didn't renew the copyrights (either because they forgot, or because they thought the cartoons weren't worth anything). Where things get interesting, is that some of these cartoons contain well known characters, such as Bugs Bunny. While there may be a legal case to be made that this puts Bugs Bunny is the public domain, Warner Bros. would, no doubt, claim otherwise (and they can afford more lawyers than you can).
- DannyPage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I wish I could double block douchebags like you.
Oh wait. GG.
*blocks DrWho Version 2* - mojito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6rabbit season!
- norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Great news! It's been a while since I've seen a cartoon in English ... My country started doubling the voices on Cartoon Network. It's awful.
- Essen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Um, it's not Nick. And as a subscriber to the Vintage Tooncast, I think it will be nice to have someone actually delivering these regularly, let alone daily.
- krschuerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My kids are going to love this.
- Scopitone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oooh, hope I we can get those WWII propaganda shorts.
- speedyrev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5DrWho2 - that's original. I guess enough people blocked you the first time that you were banned.
Blocked again. - Ermenwyr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Some related links:

YA, well, what I'd like to get ahold of is the old Warner Brothers cartoons BEFORE they went and screwed 'em up by colorizing them!
I remember when I was a kid watching them in pure black and white format, Porky Pig, Bugs....can't find them anymore... - rblinne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There's a difference in copyright law in the UK and the US about how long it takes to enter the public domain. This is one of the reasons why some "historic" recordings of American music are available in Europe but not here. One irony is that Dickens complained how the Americans didn't respect British copyright.
- orbitalleader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4" While there may be a legal case to be made that this puts Bugs Bunny is the public domain, "
Specific characters are not copyrighted. I find it disheatening diggers know so little about copyright and what exactly can be copyrighted and yet have no compunction at all about lecturing the rest of us about the issue.
A SPECIFIC BODY OF WORK IS COPYRIGHTED.
A SPECIFIC CHARACTER IS TRADEMARKED.
There'a a difference. - orbitalleader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"None of those characters are publiv domain."
No, but the works are. You're confusing the copyrighting of a work and the trademarking of a character. They are not the same. - fr0z3nph03n1x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5When I saw Mighty Mouse I was like, apples comming up with weird product names....
- Essen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hooray?
- tenchi71, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6and I highly Doubt Donald Duck is public domain... Mickey was around before Donald

- farfromsubtl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Or for free from www.archive.org
I hardly see how Nickelodeon repackaging public domain is news. The Vintage Tooncast has been going for almost half a year now. - Daryl209, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5As great and popular the Simpsons are
Nothing beats watching Daffy Duck make a fool out of himself! - HokieTT, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5http://www.digg.com/links/Those_early_morning_Saturday_cartoons_you_may_remember
Dekkerd posted something similar a couple weeks ago, if you guys want more. - Ermenwyr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If this is the same one that I tried out last week, it has text across the bottom and right sides of the screen that never goes away. I found this annoying enough to prevent me from watching it (especially since I could just download the videos from archive.org without the junk on the screen).
- Stockwell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What would Tex Avery say to this?
- babbling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Depending on what country you're in, some Bugs Bunny cartoons are public domain, yes. I believe they are in Australia, at least, but due to the 2005 Free Trade Agreement (thanks for having a ***** government and exporting it, Americans!) which effectively brought the Sonny Bono Copyright Extension Act to Australia, but not retroactively (unlike the US implementation), no more will be entering the public domain for at least another 20 years.
- cuoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I knew I should have taken that left turn at Albuquerque!
- smithco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A few weeks back, Google Video of the Day posted WW2 Disney film on VD. Absolutely hilarious.
http://gvod.blogspot.com/2006/03/disney-wartime-vd-cartoon.html - Willy99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2some really cool vintage cartoons can be found in the cartoon library at http://tesla.LikeTelevision.com - they also offered 12 cool clips free for the ipod.
http://www.liketelevision.com/blog/archives/000379.html - CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been subscribed to the Vintage Tooncast feed for a couple of months now, and they're fun to watch on the tube when I'm not in the mood to read a book (certainly beats the usual doom-and-gloom-laden sensationalism in the newspapers). Definitely not something I'd pay for, and there's been a few duff shows, but fun nonetheless.
- EtherealPurple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This: http://www.renmenven.org/tooncast/tooncast.html is similar, although the cartoons seem a bit more obscure.
- Essen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm very much looking forward to Frederator actually delivering this content regularly.
- Stockwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kill the wabbit!!

- MamboCube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1these are great!, Although im fairly young, I love the old vintage cartoons, already watched Mighty Mouse about 3 times! :)

- icykismet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0if all these cartoons are public domain, what stops me from using the full version of Quicktime to chop Fred's intro and ending off to launch my own podcast using his content? hmm.... now there's an idea...
- OwdenBowden, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This is all fine and dandy only if they show the Original Cartoons UNCUT and UNCENSORED! anything less is not worth you time. Sick of the "PC" bull *****.

- G00mper, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1If I'm not mistaken, copyright last around 90 years after the death of the author. None of those characters are publiv domain.
