- peterinjapan, on 07/16/2009, -3/+18I have an original iPhone for this very purpose and it's a pain in the ass, now that AT&T (who deserves to be sued) has dropped off all prepaid plans, in short expecting me to sign up for a 2 year contract for MY equipment that's now two years old. They are insane, and Apple needs to yank their exclusivity, ASAP. Meanwhile, I am happily set up with T-Mobile, who actively support jailbroken iPhones (ignore what this article says, the guy got a bad T-Mobile). My T-Mobile store in Mira Mesa, San Diego, had a smart guy (Toby) who had his own jailbroken iPhone and told me how to do it. Works great.
- Khast, on 07/16/2009, -1/+15Pssst....I think we've already been saying that from the start.... I have never heard any praise about AT&T on Digg....
- 8347, on 07/16/2009, -0/+10Welcome to AT&T Brother! We hate them too but it's either them or no iPhone. Or T-Mobile with no 3G.
- holeymoley, on 07/16/2009, -0/+9Rogers in Canada told me that AT&T would charge me up to 6 cents per kilobyte if I used data on my iPhone in the US - that's $60 per MB!! Of course, they would graciously sell me a package for $10 per month that would reduce that to 1 cent per kB ($10 per MB). Rogers is as evil as AT&T.
- AussieJames, on 07/16/2009, -2/+11Its a shame, because the author didn't know he could of walked into Walmart or even 7- Eleven and pick up a AT&T or T-Mobile prepaid sim card and used that strictly for calls, however he wouldn't be able to get data (as mentioned in article) since AT&T discontinued the prepaid data plans however Wi-fi works alot better anyway and tourists tend to huddle in cities that have Wi-Fi everywhere, i.e New York City.
- JasonCox, on 07/16/2009, -6/+13Digg needs a new rallying cry. We have '***** THE RIAA' and '***** THE MPAA', now I think we need '***** AT&T'!
- Gizza, on 07/16/2009, -1/+6It's articles like this that make me glad I live in a country where what your phone companies do is illegal.
- sleepless, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4Then you have to make all your calls outdoors.
- junkneo, on 07/16/2009, -1/+4We need satellite phones (at affordable rates......), so we can travel physically and virtually together.
- sleepless, on 07/16/2009, -1/+4"I tink we once had a word for tis... wha waz izt?"
Oh yes, it's called Monopoly. - inactive, on 07/16/2009, -1/+4That is why the whole cellphone industry in the US sucks ass. Locked phones, carrier exclusives, draconian TOS. And its only going to get worse as we have fewer and fewer options. Something needs to be done.
- markcc01, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Google Translate Fail.
- youareretarded, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2I guess that means there are pro and cons to every country!
Let's all bitch about the cons though! - smacksaw, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Hmm, where is the federal gov't who regulates these things when you need them?
How is it the "free market" when it's opposite of freedom? It's anti-competitive, monopolistic and exploitative. - aychseven, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2having wi-fi everywhere doesn't mean it's free or open. i came to tokyo expecting wi-fi everywhere, and there is, but all the access points have security.
- voiceofid, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2he could have settled for edge only, got a tmobile monthly flex pay plan and still had data/txt/calls
- lostngone, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2I must be missing something here, if the iPhone from New Zealand isn't carrier locked why couldn't you just activate the sim in another phone and then just slide it into the iphone?
- FairDinkumMate, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2It's not just them. I live in Brazil but travel regularly to Australia for work paying ~$40 per MB.
- Blax, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2It must run in the family (They used to be owned by AT&T).
- FairDinkumMate, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2I'm not talking about prepaid, I'm talking about global roaming. But the example of pricing that you just gave shows how much ALL phone companies around the world are ripping off customers that use data when travelling internationally.
- lostngone, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2mattsydoz: I do a lot of international traveling and a carrier locked phone is a pain in the ass because even with AT&T's international plan it is still way over priced for airtime. I even paid full price for my 3GS and its still carrier locked...
- AmazingSteve, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2America. If we can't ***** you in the ass first, then you can't have it. Enjoy you're stay.
- iBleeedOrange, on 07/16/2009, -1/+3The only reason I don't have an iPhone is because of AT&t....and I don't think I'm alone.
- dustinbolton, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2iPhone works great on T-Mobile.
- mrBitch, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2You could just buy an unlocked iPhone outright, and not buy into a contract of any sort.
You can then activate an AT&T sim card from a cheap, $10-$15 gophone (using the imei of the cheap phone) then just pop the sim into the unlocked iPhone. - Atario, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Welcome to the land of corporatocracy.
- Taiyoryu, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Talk about being late to the party.
- iBleeedOrange, on 07/22/2009, -0/+1Dimplier if I could just go through Verizon, wouldn't Apple make a lot more money if they made it so their phone was available through any cellular phone company?
Are there deep ties with AT&T that I'm not aware of? (I haven't looked into this at all) - smacksaw, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Yeah I was telling my buddy Kevin to get iPhone on his Fido as it's the only thing that works on the Point reliably, but he got a RAZR instead.
Honestly, that plan is a good deal, especially if you were able to get Fido to do the price-match stuff. It's hard to get them to do that stuff. - Khast, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1@jsauter
I have 150 minutes + 6GB + iPhone services package through Fido.
6GB was an unlisted item I knew about from a friend. (My bill has "unknown" ) - dsmith5237, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1No, I wish AT&T and all the carriers would provide a more open network experience. Until then, though, I've come to realize sometimes it's a losing battle for something that turns out to be petty.
My CDMA phone also has a SIM slot and GSM radio that should work in most places around the world. However, if I traveled somewhere that didn't work with my phone I wouldn't spend hours upon hours fighting about it. After having spent hundreds or thousands of dollars in travel expenses, I wouldn't shed a tear about going to the nearest convenience store or electronics place and spending $30 on a local prepaid phone. - youareretarded, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Actually the person in the story could have easily bought and activated a pre aid device on att and then pop his sim card into his iphone and be done with it.
Had the rep been a little more resourceful he could have put in a dummy imei during the account setup and again the customer could have popped the new sim into his iphone.
Either way, what we have here is what we call in the states, a cry baby. - youareretarded, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Yes they do offer no contract plans, even on the iphone.
- mattsydoz, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Even if you were allowed to have an unlocked iPhone in the USA who will you use it with? You would only get 3G on AT&T. T-Mobile uses a difference frequency band. Verizon and Sprint use a different mobile standard.
Even so, I do agree with you. If there were no carrier exclusive then perhaps you would have seen an iPhone 3G that worked on both AT&T and T-Mobile. But when you have exclusivity then there's no need to be compatible.
If you want a view of where this is different. In Australia the iPhone 3G S is available from 5 different providers on all 4 mobile networks. The phone is locked but can be unlocked by the provider. You also have the choice of purchasing the phone unlocked from Apple, to use with any provider/network. Oh, and there is prepaid with data. - happyMensch, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1I'm moving to NZ.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Yeah, true.
Still, you'd expect that having spent so much money on a phone you just wouldn't have to deal with these sorts of problems at all. - mrBitch, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1In all other countries (outside the U.S.) you can just buy an unlocked iPhone with no contract.
You can then activate an AT&T sim card from a cheap, $10-$15 gophone (using the imei of the cheap phone) then just pop the sim into the unlocked iPhone. - jsauter, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Khast:
Which is your voice plan? How many minutes do you get? I can't seem to find anything that cheap, but maybe I am looking at the wrong plans. - Khast, on 07/16/2009, -1/+2Eh, I get better 3G coverage where I live than most US cities do. (And I have full 3G coverage & 5 bars of signal when going through the Coquihala pass...which I'd love to see AT&T have full coverage out in the middle of nowhere.)
Oh, and when going through most tunnels and underground portions of shopping malls, there is full signal.
Rogers/Fido is SUPERIOR to anything AT&T will ever offer. Although, I hope one day they prove me wrong... - junkneo, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Sorry for you, man.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Jail-break and use T-Mobile, buy an unlocked phone from overseas, or boycott the phone and At&t until they fold.
Also, if the people really don't like this type of behavior, they can lobby their legislators toward a resolution that fits for their community. If enough states have an issue, they can vote against this type of behavior by At&t; changing the way At&t does business in this nation.
Both methods require effort and will-power, something too many people lack. - diemunkiesdie, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1For a moment I was thinking the guy missed the most obvious and easy solutions to his problem (and I was shocked that a T-Mobile store did not have any SIM cards), but then I realized that as an international traveler, he may not know that he could pick up a SIM from one of those locations.
- youareretarded, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1Here try using this, it might help you in life:
http://tiny.cc/6ZiKV - youareretarded, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1So I assume you buy all your cellphones at full retail price then, like they do overseas?
- Nuhaus, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1Does At&T not offer a no contract month to month plan? I'm in Canada right now with my E72 using Fido on this service. I just cancel the plan at the end of August and go back to my China mobile sim card when I start work again. It's more expensive than a 3 year plan with either Rogers or Fido, but I get to close the account any time I like.
- mattsydoz, on 07/16/2009, -0/+0If you are paying ~$40 per MB on an Australian prepaid SIM then you are not using it correctly, or haven't been to Australia recently. As an example you get 150 MB when you pay A$40 on the Optus Turbocap Prepaid. It even includes calls. Other networks have similar deals.
- mattsydoz, on 07/16/2009, -0/+0Ah, you have the attitude of AT&T. Why should a traveller to the USA want a prepaid SIM with data? I can tell you a reason for having a prepaid SIM. If you want people in the USA to call you back you need a North American number. They won't call your foreign number if you roam. If you are out and about most of the time you need a cell number. If you have a phone like the iPhone that expects a data connection you also need data.
What this story is highlighting is that what is simple in other countries is not simple when going to the USA. In many countries you can buy a prepaid SIM at the airport which includes data. It couldn't be easier. Even if not available at the airport you can just walk into a convenience store and get one. But then a lot of countries don't lock the phones to only use SIMs from the network that provides the phone. - Khast, on 07/16/2009, -2/+2Heh... I live in the US, but if I go to any other US city, I have international roaming.
We have no US cell coverage where I live, so I use a Canadian cell phone....well, where I am I more likely to call?
Anyways roaming in the US, it's about $1.69 per minute to talk, and 5 cents per kilobyte. (1MB = ~$50 )
I have the smallest talktime plan allowed, with the 6GB dataplan for my iPhone in Canada. ~$45CAD per month -
